LA DÉCARBONATION DU TRANSPORT MARITIME : INNOVER POUR
ASSURER UNE CONTINUITÉ DE LA CHAÎNE LOGISTIQUE

Après l’entrée en vigueur des règles de l’OMI le 1er janvier 2020, la décarbonation
du transport maritime s’accélère. Les prochaines étapes de OMI 2030, OMI 2050
amènent les opérateurs de la chaîne logistique à se pencher sur les innovations
pour le transport maritime. Les armateurs investissent dans la R&D, les
commissionnaires et les chargeurs doivent prendre en compte l’empreinte
carbone des transports. Et les ports devront jouer un rôle dans la fourniture des
futurs carburants alternatifs. Des interactions qui nécessitent que tous les acteurs
s’impliquent avec en filigrane le financement de ces infrastructures et de ces
nouveaux paradigmes logistiques.

Les liaisons entre les ports ultramarins français et la Métropole sont aujourd’hui
assurées par quelques lignes régulières. Il y a quelques années, des armateurs
ont tenté une expérience au départ des ports de Métropole vers les îles des
Caraïbes. Une tentative qui s’est soldée par un échec. Elles sont relativement
peu nombreuses. Le marché des ports ultramarins pourrait-il accueillir de
nouvelles lignes maritimes qu’il s’agisse de relations avec la Métropole, l’Europe
voire l’Asie ou l’Amérique ? Quels types de lignes maritimes peuvent aujourd’hui
trouver une place dans le marché (conventionnelles, roulier, …) ?

With the entry into force of new IMO rules on 1 January 2020, the
decarbonisation of international shipping is accelerating. The next steps of IMO
2030 and IMO 2050 are leading supply chain operators to explore innovations
in shipping. Shipowners are investing in R&D, and freight forwarders and
shippers need to take into account the carbon footprint of transport. Ports will
also have to play a role in supplying future alternative fuels. These interactions
need everyone in the industry to get involved, with the underlying aim of
financing this infrastructure and new logistics paradigms.

A handful of regular lines operate between French overseas ports and
Metropolitan France. A few years ago, a number of shipowners tried
experimenting with providing service from the ports in Metropolitan France
to the Caribbean islands. It was a failure and today relatively few offer this
service. Could the French overseas port market make room for new shipping
lines, whether it be with routes to Metropolitan France, Europe or even Asia
or the Americas? What types of shipping lines are there room for in the
market today (conventional, ro-ro, etc.)?
