L’action se déroule dans le décor enchanteur du Kanuhura,
sur l’atoll de Lhaviyani, aux Maldives. Cet hôtel du groupe Sun
Resorts accueille les visiteurs en hydravion avec un brin de
romantisme. Qui pourrait résister à la tentation de monter à bord
de cet oiseau de métal pour découvrir un trésor caché ?
Le touriste lambda, peut-être abandonnera un tel périple, avec
ses tours et ses détours, alors que les âmes en quête d’exclusive
aventure seront comblées.
« Y arriver » est certainement ce que l’artiste de renommée
internationale, Wolfgang Loesche, réussit à faire. Mais il va plus
loin que le simple atterrissage. Amerrissant sur l’île par son rivage,
il en fait du concret, sa création à partir d’elle. Elle sera à la fois le
point de départ et d’arrivée d’une œuvre picturale. La boucle est
bouclée.

Certainly, world-renowned artist Wolfgang Loesche
did more than simply “make it” to the point of
arrival. He made something out of it – quite literally.
A stunning venue for an art show? It may become
thus. We may wonder where the artwork starts
and ends in the whispers that Loesche inscribes
in graphic details, combining plastic effects and
designer skills. They seem to echo through the
architectural space that hosts them, thus forming
a larger piece that marries nature and culture in
astonishing ways, as the title of this exhibition
condenses in one single word, one magical word:
KANAHURA. A hidden place that opens up to those
who wish to explore its secret nature.
Having already shown artwork at Le Touessrok
in Mauritius in 2008, it is the KANAHURA in the
Maldives that Wolfgang Loesche has recently had
the privilege to treat as both his subject matter
and his hosting place.
One of the triptychs he produces feels like a storyboard
inscribing discrete times on three separate
canvasses: the instant of arriving, the time to
register and, finally, the moment of leaving.
Used to showing in the well-known galleries of
London, the US and Germany, Loesche chose twice
to let himself be taken by the dazzling charm of
Sun Resorts hotels, bringing out and unpacking his
suitcases in the Maldives… emptied out but all the
better for painting.
Echo of a fairy tale, stories within stories, plays
within plays, the process Loesche chooses to

Alternant subtilement entre effets plastiques bruts
et précision du dessin, les murmures du peintre
s’inscrivent avec force détails graphiques sur des
toiles colorées. Celles-ci répondent en écho à l’espace
architectural qui les accueille, formant ainsi une œuvre
plus générale qui invite nature et culture à s’épouser
mutuellement. Le titre de l’exposition condense cette
alliance magique en un mot : KANUHURA.
Ayant déjà exposé au Touessrok à Maurice en
2008, ce fut donc l’an dernier au tour de Kanuhura
de recevoir Loesche. Cet accueil îlien constitue sa
source d’inspiration et son sujet de prédilection entre
deux préoccupations urbaines. Qu’est-ce donc que
voyager ? Qu’est-ce qu’une île ? L’un de ses triptyques
ressemble à un story-board qui pose les trois temps
principaux du voyage : l’instant où l’on arrive, le temps
de (se) rendre compte de quelques choses, et enfin, le
moment de repartir.
Habitué des galeries renommées à Londres, aux
Etats-Unis, en Allemagne, c’est la deuxième fois que
Loesche se laisse prendre au jeu de Sun Resorts.
