TV Presenters:
The Arts of
Public Speaking
Oleh Zemirah Lutfi
Have you ever imagined yourself on TV Some of us would just
nod and some would shake their heads. All of you must have
noticed that nowadays, the recent reality programmes in Malaysia
are mostly in search of those who want to be TV presenters. Such
programmes like On Air, Imam Muda and many more are designed
to get new hosts to replace the former ones. How good it is to be
a presenter and how interesting this job is still be a question, but
those who are really interested to be one may have to discover
ways to make their dreams a real.
You must be wondering who they are, don’t you For your
information, A television presenter is a person who introduces or
hosts television programmes. Nowadays it is common for minor
celebrities in other fields to take on this role. In Malaysia, for
instance, the limitation of this job prospect may open up chances
for celebrities to take upon the role. Look at Sarimah Ibrahim, a
singer and actress and now becoming one of the best presenters
in our country. Not to mention Aznil Haji Nawawi who started off
singing and later be the most popular presenter at the age of
40. Many more celebrities are following suits. There are also a
number of people who have made their name solely within the
field of presenting, particularly within children’s television series to
become a television personality. Some politicians, motivators who
have expertise in their own fields are now taking up challenges to
become presenters on TV. However, ordinary people like us also
will get a chance to be like them as long as you manage to develop
your abilities to present something in front of the audience.
Being a presenter is all about personality. Presenters must learn
a few simple technical skills. They need to have certain charisma to
attract the audience to watch their show on TV. The best presenters
can ensure that the audience would be ‘glued’ on TV.
Obviously some presenting roles have specific requirements.
For example, a news reader must be able to read an autocue
without mistakes, a football presenter must have good game
knowledge, a children’s presenter must be able to relate well
to kids, etc. They are not born to be presenters but they polish
themselves through lessons and training.
