Occhialini”, anno 2009 Fisica dei Gamma Ray Bursts Personale Guido Chincarini Paolo D’Avanzo Raffaella Margutti The years 2009 – 2010 have been two years of large activity because of the maturity reached in the observations and relative modeling of the GRBs and the desire to undertake new challenges in addition to the full exploitation of the Swift satellite of which I have been, as in the past years, the Italian principal investigator and member of the International Restricted Executive. I preapared the ASI report of the 2007 – 2010 activity since that contract came to an end and I was going to retire from the University (Nov 2010). 1. In these two years I participated to 24 papers in refereed journal with a total of 675 citations. In many of these I had a primary role both in the science and relative coordination so that I will mention only the work related to these. • I have been primarily interested in understanding the flare activity in GRBs convinced that this research may eventually lead to fundamental insights into the physics and related modeling of the source of Energy. Most of this work has been done in collaboration with Margutti and following the work I published in 2007 (112 citations). See also papers by Margutti et al. • We completed the paper related to GRB090423 for which I asked Dr. Salvaterra and Della Valle to coordinate the final writing of the paper. This paper is of some cosmological interest because of its z=8.1 redshift. It required a large amount of International coordination and local effort in order to get it published in Nature together with the paper of the other group who worked on this subject with better instrumentation at hand (TNG observation versus VLT and GROND). • The rest is more or less routine work or work that has been lead by other scientists. I would like to refer, however, to the paper by D’Elia et al (2009) on GRB080319B who is related to the Nature paper published in 2008 by Racusin et al. and on which I had a prominent role and to the paper by Moretti et al. 2009 that while it reflects work practically done solely by Moretti, id rather fundamental and reflects a good knowledge of the instrumentation on board of Swift. 2. Following the funding (PRIN 2007) of the conceptual study of a large ground based robotic telescope for the study of transients we completed the study of the Telescope and focal plane instrumentation to propose for funding of the phase A study and funding. The approach to ERC funding has not been successful however because of lack of funds and so far we did not attempt to apply to other agencies.
