Walking around the city, the look of awe
on tourists’ faces confirms that Florence,
with its strong historical and
cultural heritage, is an exceptional city, even in a
country as remarkable as Italy. How could anyone
not succumb to the view from the balcony of the
Uffizi gallery, which made such an impression on
Bernard Berenson and Elizabeth Barret Browing:
the river Arno and its many bridges (from Ponte
Vecchio to Ponte Santa Trinita), Colle Belvedere
and its gorgeous villas and churches, Santo Spirito’s
belfry, the embankments along the Arno, the shape
of the city, as finely cut as a precious jewel. Beauty
is everywhere, not only at the Uffizi gallery, but
lingers in the “piazze” and streets, the surrounding
hills, the shadows the bridges cast on the river, the
domes and belfries, the colorful walls. The colors
and shapes of the masterpieces held in museums,
are reflected everywhere around the city.
Florence is special not only for its thrilling beauty,
everywhere so obvious, from the soft curve of its
surroundings hills to the extraordinary beauty of
the city center, holding one of the richest cultural
and historical heritage in the world, but also for its
wordly way of life and its ability, so typical of Florence,
to manage selecting only the best, with perfect
taste. One could say that the concept “made
in Italy” was born here in Florence, where Dante Alighieri
developed Italian, while Giotto created another
form of expression.
Nowadays, to understand the signs and symbols of
our times, one just needs to walk to via de’ wTornabuoni,
known as “Europe’s living room” since the
1800s. Because Florence is so full of creativity and
wonderful things, it can be described as classic, eccentric,
cosmopolitan and unique, all at once. This is
a city to discover and enjoy slowly, careful not to be
overwhelmed by so much beauty.
