Quante Como ci sono nel mondo? Mentre l’associazione “Famiglia Comasca” di
via Bonanomi 5 prosegue nella sua meritevole iniziativa “Comaschi nel mondo”
per stabilire con la logica della rete una connessione tra il Lario e tutti i lariani
sparsi sul pianeta, proviamo a contare quante località hanno riferimenti con la
patria di Volta e dei missoltini in territorio americano: uno dei primi che vengono
in mente quando si parla di immigrazione di massa e delle sue conseguenze
anche sul piano toponomastico, ma anche uno dei primi quando si parla di
turismo. Eh sì, perché non è un segreto che gran parte degli stranieri in visita sul
Lario sono proprio a stelle e strisce. La rinomanza di Como negli Usa si è molto
accresciuta grazie ai tanti film hollywoodiani girati sul lago e alla presenza di nomi
illustri come quello dell’attore George Clooney.
Dal 2005 è attivo addirittura un parco dei divertimenti a St. Paul nel Minnesota
che si chiama Como Town. Ma quante località Usa con odor di lago è possibile
registrare sulla carta geografica? Gli States, insospettabile terra brianzofila,
annoverano ben sei “Monticello” (per la precisione in Arkansas, Iowa, Kentucky,
Utah, Wisconsin e nello Stato di New York). Ma è proprio il capoluogo, Como,
e il suo lago, ad avere ispirato tanti cloni in America: si pensi a “Lake Como”,
un ricco, ma decisamente piccolo paese (conta circa 2.100 abitanti) del New
Jersey, sull’oceano vicino ad Asbury Park (esattamente il luogo dove il rocker
Usa “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen cominciò la sua carriera, dedicandogli poi
un celebre disco), in una regione molto importante e ricca, a una cinquantina
di chilometri da New York, in una delle zone più prospere degli Stati Uniti, non a
caso scelta anche come residenza da attori, cantanti e Vip.
La località, che era nata agli inizi del 1900 con il nome di South Belmar, con
un apposito referendum popolare ha cambiato nome ed è stata ribattezzata
proprio come il nostro lago. Merito del sindaco della penultima giunta in carica,
l’ottantenne Lorenzo Chiaravallo, un italo-americano la cui famiglia è originaria
di Caltanissetta, che ha addirittura istituito un gemellaggio avvalendosi della
collaborazione dell’amministrazione provinciale di Como.
Una partnership che potrà avere ricadute positive in termini sia di scambi turistici
sia di rapporti di tipo economico. La proposta di cambiare nome alla città, che
sorge su un piccolo lago, è partita da Joseph Louro, e fa parte di un progetto
molto più largo di ampliamento e rilancio della cittadina. Ma si tratta in realtà
di un ritorno alle origini: «Alla metà dell’Ottocento - ha spiegato in un’intervista
Chiaravallo - questa zona si chiamava Como. Non sappiamo per quale motivo,
ma ci sono alcuni atti del 1870 che portano la datazione Como».
Nel 1924, anno ufficiale della fondazione del paese, però, è stato scelto il nome di
South Belmar, che è rimasto fino a poco tempo fa. Ci sono altre due Lake Como
per la cronaca negli Usa, precisamente nella contea di Putnam in Florida (circa
mille abitanti) e in quella di Wayne, in Pennsylvania (224 abitanti, tutti bianchi,

all the Como folk dotted around the planet, let’s try and count how many
localities refer to the native land of Volta and shad fish in the USA: surely
the place when it comes to mass immigration and its consequences,
including those regarding place-names; but it’s also the place when it
comes to tourism. Not half! It’s an open secret that most foreigners visiting
Como come attired in stars and stripes. Como’s fame in the States
has grown by leaps and bounds through so many Hollywood movies being
filmed on the lake, and through the presence here of big names like
the actor George Clooney. Since 2005 there’s been a fun park at St Paul’s
in Minnesota called Como Town. But just how many US localities smelling
of lake air can you spot on a map of America? The States (certified Brianza
fans) boast no fewer than 6 ‘Monticellos’ (to be precise in Arkansas, Iowa,
Kentucky, Utah, Wisconsin and New York State). But it’s the provincial
capital itself Como – and its lake – which have inspired so many clones
in America: what about ‘Lake Como’, an affluent but decidedly small town
(counting approx. 2,100 inhabitants) in New Jersey on the ocean near Asbury
Park (the very place where US rocker ‘The Boss’ Bruce Springsteen’s
career began, which he dedicated a famous record to) a very rich and
important district, about 50 km away from New York, in one of the most
prosperous areas in the United States; it’s no coincidence that actors,
singers and VIPs choose to live there as well. The village started life in
the early 1900s as South Belmar, but changed its name to our lake’s as a
result of a local referendum. This was all thanks to the last mayor but one
Lorenzo Chiaravallo, an 80 year-old Italian American whose family came
from Caltanissetta who even twinned the new town with Como via contacts
with the provincial administration. Such a partnership should have
positive spin-offs in terms of both tourism and the economy. The proposal
to change the name of the town standing by a small lake was Joseph
Louro’s brainchild, as part of a wider scheme to extend and regenerate
the town. But it is in fact a return to its origins: “In the mid 1800s”, explained
Chiaravallo in an interview, “this zone was called Como. We’re not
sure why, but some 1870 paperwork is franked Como”. In 1924 however,
the town’s official foundation year, the name South Belmar was chosen
which stuck until quite recently. Just for the record there are two other
Lake Comos in the USA, to be precise in Putnam county in Florida (pop.
ca 1000) and in Wayne in Pennsylvania (224 inhabitants, all white ac-
