abbandonato dai tempi della Guerra Civile che il grande artista spagnolo aveva scoperto nella mai dimenticata città di Figueras, che gli aveva dato i natali nel 1904. Acquistò il rudere per sviluppare subito dopo un radicale progetto di ristrutturazione che doveva in breve trasformarlo, dal tetto alle fondamenta, nella sua opera più imponente e ambiziosa in cui ogni visitatore sarebbe stato parte della rappresentazione. Per questo i lavori partirono proprio dal palcoscenico, sul quale, sospesa a dieci metri d’altezza, fu eretta una maestosa cupola geodetica per filtrare la luce esterna e ridistribuirla all’interno, tra i diversi ambienti, con un effetto allucinatorio. E percorrendo ancora oggi le sale dell’edificio inaugurato nel 1974, quasi ci si smarrisce in un labirinto dove nulla è come appare a un primo sguardo superficiale: entri nella “Room Mae West” e ci trovi solo un comodo divano rosso, morbidi tendaggi, un caminetto e due quadri dal soggetto confuso. Ma basta fare qualche passo indietro e guardando l’insieme riconosci il volto della famosa attrice americana divenuta l’icona sexy degli anni Trenta. Tutto il museo ruota intorno a questo dualismo tra verità (continuamente messa in discussione) e finzione, tra l’essere e l’apparire di ogni cosa. Il ritratto dell’amata moglie Gala che guarda il mar Mediterraneo, a venti metri di distanza si trasforma nell’immagine di Abramo Lincoln grazie all’utilizzo di un’originale tecnica pittorica “digitale”. D'altronde per Dalì l’indagine nell’inconscio procedeva di pari passo con le sperimentazioni più stravaganti, come gli ologrammi presenti al Teatre-Museu attraverso i quali l’artista aveva tentato di creare una visione totale tridimensionale, in 1974, reflects Dali’s skill at manipulating perception and his determination to push viewers to constantly re-evaluate what they see: in the “Mae West Room” there is a red sofa, flowing curtains, a fireplace and two abstract paintings. When viewed from a certain spot, this living room with custom furniture turns into the face of the iconic American actress of the 1930s. The museum as a whole is based on the dualism between truth (which is continuously challenged) and fantasy, between inner reality and surface appearance. Twenty metres away, the painting of Dali’s wife and soul-mate Gala gazing at the Mediterranean Sea suddenly becomes a pixellated portrait of Abraham Lincoln. For Dali the immersion into the subconscious went hand-in-hand with his extravagant experimentation with many art forms, including the holograms on display here, which the artist used to create a total 3 or even 4-dimensional vision of his output. The works exhibited (some 1,500 pieces comprising paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and jewels) reflect Dali’s eccentric personality. This is no ordinary museum – the dominant themes are divertissement, optical illusion and layers of meaning. These techniques are never used merely for their own sake, however. As Dali himself said: “I am not the clown. But in its naivety, this monstrously cynical society does not see who is simply putting on a serious act the better to hide his madness.” Many of the galleries are brimming with works that seem to be the product of a psychological meltdown. His no-holds-barred approach ranges from his trademark statues of women with crutches to the faceless golden mannequins perched on the walls. “This place was designed to provoke the visitor and appeal to their unconscious, making them active participants in this subtle interplay,” explains Director of the Centre for Dalinian Studies Montse Aguer.
