Caro Ospite
a destinazione.
in Italia, Spagna, Tunisia, Malta, Marocco e Grecia.
Vantaggiose offerte,
importanti partnership,
divertenti mini-crociere
a tema, ed un nuovo
collegamento diretto
tra Italia e Spagna…
questo e tanto altro
ancora nel nuovo anno
con Grimaldi Lines!
Il Gruppo Grimaldi chiude il 2011 non
solo confermando tutte le agevolazioni
proposte nel corso dell’anno, ma
anche annunciando nuove vantaggiose
offerte, importanti convenzioni con
grandi partner, quali IKEA FAMILY e
CARTA SI’, e soprattutto una grande
novità: a partire dallo scorso mese di
dicembre, il Gruppo ha infatti esteso
l’attuale collegamento tra i porti di
Salerno e Cagliari con Valencia, Spagna,
finora dedicato alle merci, anche
ai passeggeri.
A servire la nuova linea passeggeri,
che ha frequenza trisettimanale, è
il moderno traghetto “Sorrento”, in
grado di ospitare 800 passeggeri in
93 cabine- tra interne, esterne e suitee
62 comode poltrone; numerosi inoltre
sono i servizi offerti a bordo, quali
ristorante- self service, caffetteria,
saletta club Vesuvio, area videogiochi
e slot machine, negozi, solarium con
lettini e bar.
tariffa SUPERBONUS, imbarcando
così gratis il proprio mezzo; con la
tariffa SUPERFAMILY & FRIENDS
famiglie e amici potranno risparmiare
marenostrum Grimaldi
fino al 50%, mentre grandi vantaggi
sono previsti per coloro che preferiscono
prenotare in anticipo la propria
vacanza attraverso l’ADVANCED
BOOKING, che offre fino al 20% di
sconto in alta stagione.
E per chi desidera relax e divertimento?
Ritornano i famosi “eventi onboard”,
Barcelona” contribuiscono infatti
a rendere tali eventi indimenticabili,
offrendo, sulla tratta Civitavecchia-
Barcellona, massimo comfort e servizi
di altissima qualità.
Grimaldi Lines dedica grande consi-
derazione anche al mondo dell’universo
scolastico, con numerose iniziative
speciali ed attività da sviluppare a
bordo delle navi. Tra queste “Grimaldi
Educa” il nuovo progetto dedicato
alla formazione dei giovani di Grimaldi
Lines, che arricchisce le offerte
rivolte agli Istituti scolastici italiani e
once said that the basic pleasures in
life are the most satisfying. Drinking a good
craft beer is certainly one such pleasure and when
you have the chance of tasting the world’s finest
brews onboard a ship where two seas merge – the
Mediterranean, which rocks you gently, and a sea of
hops, malt, barley and wheat that unites and enlivens
– your level of satisfaction knows no bounds. 500
people enjoyed this unique experience in a striking
location like the beautiful “Cruise Roma”, capable to
join people of different generations, from different
countries, men and women from all walks of life drawn
to a beer-themed mini-cruise offering the delights
and variety of craft brewery. Participants in the 4-day
of navigation in the Mediterranean and in the sunny
Barcelona included beer connoisseurs and enthusiasts,
master brewers, producers and publicans. Beer was
not only drunk onboard but also studied with the
assistance of the many experts, who held workshops
and beer-tasting sessions. One of the stars was Lorenzo
Dabove, aka “Kuaska”, the Italian microbrewery critic
par excellence, who was the official beer taster at “A
Sea of Beer”. And what better travelling companion
than the amber fluid on a crossing like this, from one
side of the Mediterranean to the other, from Rome
to Barcelona, on a route embracing the very essence
of European identity! Throughout the Cruise Roma,
from the deck to Smaila’s lounge, there were over
100 different brews, some exclusive to the event
and making their debuts. In all, 39 breweries and
9 countries were represented. Operations (tapping
of kegs and rotation of barrels) were directed by
Manuele Colonna, the iconic publican at the famous
Roman watering hole “Ma che siete venuti a fa’”,
venienti da nove paesi del mondo. A coordinare ogni
beer fest and published Eurhop, the first Italian guide
devoted entirely to quality European beer, talks about
his decision to turn his passion for craft brewery into
years ago right there at Ma che siete venuti a fa’. I
realised that I was in a special place with a special
atmosphere. And I learnt that microbrewery means
genuine hand crafted small batch beers shared with
fellow enthusiasts who enjoy each other’s company
and get together to exchange opinions around a table
or at a bar where the centre of attention is always
secrets of home brewing. The beer fest continued ashore
with a cultural exchange in Barcelona in one of the
city’s best known pubs in the company of top Spanish
Master Brewers. Meanwhile, throughout the mini-cruise,
Guests were able to make the most of all the ship’s
amenities like the casino, the spa and the Afterhour
Pub, which served patrons until 5 am. There was also
lots of music, singing and dancing, courtesy of the DJ
mix sets from the Circolo degli Artisti, another Roman
venue synonymous with passion and entertainment,
which provided live performances onboard. The 4-day
The greatest Catalan architect since the Middle Ages,
the man who designed the wondrous Christian temple
that was to become the symbol of Barcelona and all of
Catalonia, went unrecognised and died in a pauper hos-
pital – just like the countless thousands of his compatriots
(the poor and needy) to whom the Sagrada Familia was
dedicated. The first stone for the church was laid on 19
March 1882 and Gaudi devoted himself almost entirely to
the project for more than forty years until his death. His
dream and utopia was to erect a great cathedral-sized
building in stone as a sort of work in progress which he cal-
marenostrum
culated it would take two centuries to complete. 127 years
later, on his recent apostolic visit to Spain, Pope Benedict
XVI consecrated the Sagrada Familia. Despite its new status
as a minor basilica, the church is still under construction
and, according to the current chief architect Jordi Bonet,
who has been in charge of the project for the last 25 years,
Antoni Gaudì’s masterpiece should be finished by 2026. In
his address, the Pope explained what the consecration of
the Sagrada Familia means not only for Barcelona and the
Catalan church but also for Gaudì himself. He remains the
only architect of the modern era to devote himself to a feat
Benedetto XVI: «In questo ambiente Gaudì volle unire l’ispirazione che gli veniva dai tre grandi libri: il libro della Natura;
Pope Benedict XVI: “In this place, Gaudí desired to unify that inspiration which came to him from three books: the book of
Nature, the book of Sacred Scripture and the book of Liturgy.”
«In
that had not been seen for centuries: the construction of a
cathedral funded solely by donations from the poor. Today,
it attracts over 2 million visitors a year, mainly tourists.
Pope Benedict said in his dedication of the church, “In the
heart of the world, placed before God and mankind, with
a humble and joyful act of faith, we raise up this massive
material structure, fruit of nature and an immense achievement
of human intelligence which gave birth to this work of
art. It stands as a visible sign of the invisible God, to whose
glory these spires rise like arrows pointing towards absolute
light and to the One who is Light, Height and Beauty itself.”
The Pope also spoke about Gaudì’s imagination and vision:
“In this place, Gaudí desired to unify that inspiration which
came to him from the three books which nourished him as
a man, as a believer and as an architect: the book of nature,
the book of sacred Scripture and the book of the liturgy.”
Antoni Gaudì expressed this not in words, but in stone and
glass. The long and intriguing history of the Sagrada Familia
marenostrum
began in 1882 and has continued ever since; work went on
even during the Spanish Civil War, when most of Gaudì’s
original models were destroyed by fire. After the death of
the man they call God’s architect, who appears to be on
the road to sainthood, work on his project didn’t cease.
The twisting, soaring spires and towers resemble an enormous
sandcastle. Today, the visitors who pay the 8 euro
admission charge to see the cathedral seem to be captivated
to such a degree that some say Gaudì’s work actually
converts people to Christianity. Is this a case of Stendhal
Syndrome, the giddiness and confusion supposedly caused
when one looks at great works of art? Perhaps not, but the
onlooker is amazed by all the activity inside with workmen,
scaffolding, tarpaulins and so on. And this is precisely what
makes the Sagrada Familia so fascinating, the fact that it’s
unfinished; it has become a major symbol of Spanish religiosity,
which is what Gaudì envisaged when he trusted future
generations of architects, engineers and builders to carry on
marenostrum
Each visitor is struck by the combination of modernism, religious architecture and Mediterranean culture – different
elements that blend together in harmony in this most extraordinary personal interpretation of church architecture and art.
dovranno essere, a fine lavori, 18 a rappresentare i 12 Apostoli;
Cristo.
the project. The basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict
on 7 November 2010. The church has a Latin-cross plan
with five naves and three aisles. The former are 90 metres
in length, the latter 60. The three main facades are the
Nativity, the Passion and the Glory. The Glory Facade is the
largest and most striking and is one of the unfinished parts.
But it’s the spires that give the building its distinctive silhouette.
Eight have been completed to date, but Gaudì’s design
calls for a total of 18 spires, representing – in ascending
order of height – the 12 Apostles, the four Evangelists, the
Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Actually, the original design,
by the architect Francesc del Villar, was of a standard form
with a nave, two aisles, seven chapels and a single spire.
With his highly individual style, Antoni Gaudì took over
and radically transformed the project. It became such a
long-term venture that it can be divided into four parts:
infancy, adolescence, young adulthood and adulthood. In
the project’s infancy the apse was built and foundations laid
for the Nativity Facade and the construction of the cloisters.
The Sagrada Familia’s adolescence coincided with the early
part of the 20th century, including the tragic death of Gaudì
in 1926 and the Civil War in 1936. This was the year that
a fire in the crypt destroyed the architect’s workshop and
most of his models. In 1940, during the Franco dictatorship,
the architect Francesc Quintana restored the crypt
and reconstructed new versions of the plans that had been
lost. These formed the basis for the continuation of Gaudì’s
project. In the 1950s the building “came of age”. This was a
time of renaissance and reconstruction, with some stages of
the work completed and others carried forward with the
involvement of new artists. Work on the Passion Facade
began in 1954 with the laying of the foundations and the
erection of the walls. The architects were Quintana, Puig
Boada and Bonet Garf. The Sagrada Familia’s age of maturity
culminated with the construction of this facade and the
addition of scenes and details sculpted by a team led by
Josep M. Subirachs. Religious symbolism is the basis of the
Passion Facade, which is austere and simple.
The Sagrada Familia is like a holy book carved in stone,
which narrates the history of a faith day by day. Each visitor
is struck by the combination of modernism, religious architecture
and Mediterranean culture – different elements that
blend together in harmony in this most extraordinary personal
interpretation of church architecture and art.
Tuscany, relax & wellness
It’s not a swimming pool. Legend has it that this natural basin
is the site where an angry Saturn hurled a lightning bolt into
the ground causing the warm (38°C) sulphurous waters to
flow from the crater of a now extinct volcano

Celebriamo dunque un rito millenario,
questo calidarium naturale a 38 gradi,
consapevoli di bagnarci in un liquido sgorgato
dalla terra quarant’anni fa. Tanto ci vuole per-
ché dalla sorgente sotterranea l’acqua filtri dalle
rocce emergendo nella vasca termale. Siamo a
Saturnia, uno dei centri benessere più famosi
d’Italia e non solo. Immerso nel cuore della
Maremma, in terra etrusca, con uno scenario
naturale impareggiabile.
sulfuree liberamente accessibili. Bagni, fanghi,
inalazioni, idromassaggi curano affezioni alle
vie respiratorie, artropatie, malattie cutanee. E
la beauty-farm prevede trattamenti rigeneranti,
antiage e antistress.
La crescita esponenziale del turismo del benessere
in questi ultimi anni ha moltiplicato i centri
beauty e fitness, ormai presenti quasi in ogni
albergo e resort della penisola. Ma i pilastri del
wellness all’italiana restano i centri termali, specie
In the heart of Maremma, in Etruscan territory, against a backdrop
of superb natural scenery, here is Saturnia and one of Italy’s best
know health farms.
marenostrum
Apparently it takes 40 years for these therapeutic
waters to flow from the depths of the
earth to the hot mud baths. The waters cascade
down from a waterfall into various tiered pools
where you can actually swim. We’re in Saturnia
at one of Italy’s best known health farms. This is
the very scenic Maremma area of Tuscany, full of
reminders of the Etruscan era. In addition to the
resort and the prestigious hotel housed in a stately
home with travertine tiles, there’s ready access to
the benefits of a range of natural therapies with
filtered hot pools, mud baths and specialised treatments
for respiratory problems, arthritis and skin
complaints. This health retreat also offers anti-ageing
facials and a range of other treatments designed to
recharge your batteries, pamper, indulge and relax.
The health and spa market is one of Italy’s fastest
growing leisure sectors. There are lower cost functional
facilities (which also like to call themselves
spas) now in many of the country’s hotels. However,
the basis for Italy’s wellness market remains the hard
core of traditional health farms/retreats, especially
those that have turned themselves into destination
and resort spas. Tuscany is at the forefront when it
comes to state-of-the-art quality spas for the niche,
specialist, luxury market. A little way to the north
is Bagno Vignoni, a picturesque spa village in the
Val d’Orcia, which is listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage site and has retained much of the Renaissance
agricultural landscape celebrated by many 16th 37

sgorga acqua termale a 49 gradi.
Piscine termali, percorsi sensoriali, acque benefiche,
In
Toscana, naturalmente.
Anime
sparse in accappatoio bianco, vapori bollenti, un
antro immenso di stalattiti e stalagmiti stillanti
gocce calde. Chi uscirà a riveder le stelle, sarà
depurato da ogni male e da ogni malattia. Siamo
nella Grotta Giusti, scoperta casualmente centocinquant’anni
fa in Valdinievole. Qui si sperimenta
la sauna naturale, benefica per artrosi,
riniti, dermatiti e obesità, respirando le salutari
acque “solfato-bicarbonato-calcio-magnesiache”.
century painters. In the middle of the village is the
large pool replenished with water at 49° from the
local thermal springs; the health-inducing properties
of the water have been known for 2000 years. The
pool is surrounded by buildings and forms the main
square, making it a unique spectacle. Because of
its proximity to Via Francigena, the historic pilgrim
route leading to Rome, the spa was used as a stopover
from ancient times. Among those who came
here to bathe were Catherine of Siena and Lorenzo
de’ Medici. The director Andrei Tarkowskij chose
the surreal atmosphere of the place as the location
for his award-winning film Nostalghia.
If the setting is what strikes you about Bagno
Vignoni, the springs at San Casciano dei Bagni owe
their popularity to the Fonteverde Natural Spa
Resort, built in what was once a Medici country residence
set in the undulating hillside south of Siena.
The world class spa facilities include therapeutic
pools and a holistic centre, with the accent on sensory
experience. The park was redesigned by international
landscape architect Arabella Lennox-Boyd.
This is the perfect ambience if you want to unwind
and the village is a great place for a stroll.
But the surprises don’t end there. Guess where the
world’s largest thermal grotto is located? In Tuscany,
of course. A bit further north, between Lucca and
Pistoia, the site is actually a cavernous abyss that
appears to descend deep into Dante’s Inferno. But
instead of tortured souls there are people in white
hooded robes that appear like ghosts through the
silky steam coming off a subterranean lake. When
you come out of the rock-walled cave you will take
with you the benefits of wellness and even cures
to illness. We’re in the exclusive full-service natural
spa resort in Grotta Giusti, a place discovered by
chance 150 years ago during building work in Valdinievole.
The water containing “sulphate-bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium”
and the natural sauna are
ideal in the treatment of arthritis, rhinitis, dermatitis
Le storiche ed
illustri terme di
Montecatini
The famous
and obesity. Here, at Monsummano Terme, there’s
also a luxury hotel with cosmopolitan clientele and,
nearby, a golf course within a short iron of Leon-
ardo da Vinci’s birthplace.
Dotted with wellness centres, Tuscany combines
curative springs and top class spa facilities. There’s
hardly any need to mention the famous thermal
baths at Montecatini and Chianciano; today, it’s also
a case of “small is beautiful”. Smaller trendy destina-
tions include the Terme di Petriolo at Monticiano,
the Terme di Rapolano between Valdichiana and
the Valley dell’Ombrone, the Terme di San Giuliano
near Pisa, and the Riva degli Etruschi wellness resort
at San Vincenzo. Also in the Province of Livorno,
at Castagneto Carducci, you can opt for thalasso-
therapy at the Tombolo Talasso Resort.
Equally famous is Fiuggi, with its “waters of Pope
Boniface VIII”, as it says on the Art Nouveau style
portal. A little known fact is that the buildings
come è scritto nel portale d’ingresso in stile
liberty.
te a Washington.
monti Lucretili.
marenostrum
erected at these springs in the 1960s were designed
by Luigi Moretti, the same architect who master-
minded the Watergate complex in Washington. The
Terme dei Papi (The Popes’ Spa) in Viterbo is less
well known but well worth the detour. The settle-
ment dates back to Etruscan times and the springs
were used by the Romans as well as by the popes
Gregory IX, Boniface IX and Nicholas V, mentioned
by Dante and painted by Michelangelo. Here, the
main Bullicame hot springs replenish a 2,000-square
metre pool. Last but not least, in the Province of
Rome, in addition to Acque Albule di Tivoli, which
has spa facilities and a large park, there are two
other gems to add to the list: the Terme di Stigliano,
in 20 hectares of splendid grounds near the Monti
della Tolfa and Lake Bracciano; and the Terme di
Cretone at Palombara Sabina, with sulphurous
waters bubbling in the Parco dei Monti Lucretili.
Inevitabilmente, guardi verso la
sommità del monumento: contro
il cielo azzurro spiccano alcune
candide uova gigantesche, come depositate
lassù da colossali uccelli. Davvero
strano, pensi, mentre ti avvicini
abbastanza per accorgerti che i sobri
bassorilievi intravisti da lontano sulla
rossa facciata del castello, altro non
sono che appetitosi panini (panini?)
sistemati in gran numero lungo il
perimetro dell’edificio. A questo punto
lo spaesamento è totale. Sai di essere
giunto a Figueras, antico borgo catalano
incuneato tra i Pirenei e la Costa
Brava a meno di cento chilometri da
Barcellona; ma il saperlo non ti aiuta
a riacquistare il senso della realtà.
Tutto quadra invece quando rammenti
che stai varcando la soglia del Teatre-
Museu Dalì, la struttura che il più
noto maestro del surrealismo decise di
costruire per mettere in scena – letteralmente
– la sua onirica visione del
mondo.
Questa storia inizia con un’ossessione.
A partire dai primi anni Settanta,
Salvador Dalì cominciò infatti ad
essere tormentato dall’idea della
morte e dell’immortalità. Con applicazione
maniacale, s’interessò perfino
ai progressi scientifici nel campo
dell’ibernazione e della conservazione
del DNA, per riuscire un giorno a
rinascere. Ma i risultati degli studi
furono scoraggianti. Tanto che preferì
ben presto dedicarsi a un’altra forma
di eternità, più spirituale (e realistica),
quella che poteva garantirgli la conservazione
della sua opera. Si prestava
perfettamente allo scopo un teatro
Inevitably, you look up to the top of the
monument, which is adorned with giant
eggs that look like they’ve been left there
by some prehistoric bird. As if that’s not
enough, as you get closer you notice that
the sombre bas-reliefs you’d made out
from afar on the pink facade of the castle
actually form a pattern of traditional
bread arranged all along the outside of
the building. At this stage you just have
to go with the flow. You’ve come to
Figueras, a town in the northeast corner
of Spain between the Pyrenees and
the Costa Brava less than 100 km from
Barcelona; this is the site of the Dali
Theatre-Museum, the municipal theatre
turned by the tormented Spanish genius
into what is now billed as the largest surrealistic
object in the world.
From the early 1970s onwards, Salvador
Dali was obsessed by the idea of death
and immortality. He was also fascinated
by scientific progress in the field of hibernation,
DNA and cryonics. Since the
results of this research were not encouraging,
he soon opted for another form
of eternal existence – more spiritual
(yet also more realistic) – through the
legacy of his works. Hence the project to
rebuild and convert the theatre, largely
destroyed in the Spanish Civil War, in
his hometown of Figueras, where Dali
was born in 1904. The Spanish visionary
transformed the building into a showcase
for his work, the idea being that the visitor
should be a part of the experiment
and interact the same way the audience
does at a performance. This explains
why the conversion began with the main
stage, surmounted ten metres in height
by an amazing geodesic glass dome roof
cupola that creates incredible hallucinogenic
light effects.
abbandonato dai tempi della Guerra
Civile che il grande artista spagnolo
aveva scoperto nella mai dimenticata
città di Figueras, che gli aveva dato
i natali nel 1904. Acquistò il rudere
per sviluppare subito dopo un radicale
progetto di ristrutturazione che doveva
in breve trasformarlo, dal tetto alle
fondamenta, nella sua opera più imponente
e ambiziosa in cui ogni visitatore
sarebbe stato parte della rappresentazione.
Per questo i lavori partirono
proprio dal palcoscenico, sul quale,
sospesa a dieci metri d’altezza, fu eretta
una maestosa cupola geodetica per
filtrare la luce esterna e ridistribuirla
all’interno, tra i diversi ambienti, con
un effetto allucinatorio.
E percorrendo ancora oggi le sale
dell’edificio inaugurato nel 1974,
quasi ci si smarrisce in un labirinto
dove nulla è come appare a un primo
sguardo superficiale: entri nella
“Room Mae West” e ci trovi solo un
comodo divano rosso, morbidi tendaggi,
un caminetto e due quadri dal soggetto
confuso. Ma basta fare qualche
passo indietro e guardando l’insieme
riconosci il volto della famosa attrice
americana divenuta l’icona sexy degli
anni Trenta. Tutto il museo ruota
intorno a questo dualismo tra verità
(continuamente messa in discussione)
ogni cosa. Il ritratto dell’amata moglie
Gala che guarda il mar Mediterraneo,
a venti metri di distanza si trasforma
nell’immagine di Abramo Lincoln grazie
all’utilizzo di un’originale tecnica
pittorica “digitale”. D'altronde per
Dalì l’indagine nell’inconscio procedeva
di pari passo con le sperimentazioni
più stravaganti, come gli ologrammi
presenti al Teatre-Museu attraverso i
quali l’artista aveva tentato di creare
una visione totale tridimensionale,
in 1974, reflects Dali’s skill at manipulating
perception and his determination to push
viewers to constantly re-evaluate what
they see: in the “Mae West Room” there
is a red sofa, flowing curtains, a fireplace
and two abstract paintings. When viewed
from a certain spot, this living room with
custom furniture turns into the face of
the iconic American actress of the 1930s.
The museum as a whole is based on the
dualism between truth (which is continuously
challenged) and fantasy, between
inner reality and surface appearance.
Twenty metres away, the painting of Dali’s
wife and soul-mate Gala gazing at the
Mediterranean Sea suddenly becomes a
pixellated portrait of Abraham Lincoln.
For Dali the immersion into the subconscious
went hand-in-hand with his
extravagant experimentation with many
art forms, including the holograms on display
here, which the artist used to create
a total 3 or even 4-dimensional vision of
his output.
The works exhibited (some 1,500 pieces
comprising paintings, sculptures, installations,
photographs and jewels) reflect
Dali’s eccentric personality. This is no
ordinary museum – the dominant themes
are divertissement, optical illusion and
layers of meaning. These techniques
are never used merely for their own
sake, however. As Dali himself said: “I
am not the clown. But in its naivety, this
monstrously cynical society does not see
who is simply putting on a serious act
the better to hide his madness.” Many
of the galleries are brimming with works
that seem to be the product of a psychological
meltdown. His no-holds-barred
approach ranges from his trademark
statues of women with crutches to the
faceless golden mannequins perched on
the walls. “This place was designed to
provoke the visitor and appeal to their
unconscious, making them active participants
in this subtle interplay,” explains
Director of the Centre for Dalinian
Studies Montse Aguer. She adds: “Dali
suo creatore. L’austerità dei musei
tradizionali è bandita, prevalgono
piuttosto il divertissement, l’illusione,
l’ambivalenza. Mai fini a se stessi,
però: «Non sono io il pagliaccio –
ripeteva spesso Dalì – ma questa
società cinica e incosciente che gioca
a far la seria per meglio nascondere
la propria follia». I piani di lettura
sono quindi molteplici e chiunque può
interpretare a suo modo il significato
delle statue di donne con le stampelle
che introducono ai vari ambienti, o
i manichini dorati e senza volto che
incombono dalle pareti della platea.
«Questo luogo è stato creato con
Montse Aguer, direttore del Centro
specifica: «Al maestro non interessava
invece un certo disordine affinché
storici palazzi della Figueras di origine
che si snodano in un misterioso
intrico di vicoli e piazzette. Passeggiando
The works exhibited (some
1,500 pieces comprising
paintings, sculptures,
installations, photographs
eccentric personality.
wanted a museum without a chronological
order, so the visitor is surprised at
every moment and so he interprets what
is seen based on his own knowledge.”
Despite its unconventional appearance,
this tourist attraction blends in effortlessly
to the local scenery in Figueras
– namely historic palazzi, ancient Roman
influences, gardens, the mazy alleyways
and little squares. When you take a
stroll around the town centre at dusk,
you can almost hear the echo of the
worlds encountered and imagined at
the Theatre-Museum. No doubt Dali
himself was captured by the allure of this
magical mixture of physical and spiritual;
this explains why in 1989 he gave instructions
that he should be buried right here
in Figueras, in a very simple crypt in the
basement of the theatre under the stage.
Thus he was to become part and parcel
of his own enduring work.

Appia Antica,
Regina viarum
di / by Edgarda Ferri
Monumento e paesaggio in continuo e altalenante mutare:
acquedotti, ville, monumenti, tombe, pianure, colline,
vigneti, pini marittimi, foreste. Testimonianza preziosa,
che avrebbe portato il suo nome; all’arresto di San Paolo;
From the Porta di San Sebastiano, the route of the city to the
catacombs and the chapel raised to St Peter and St Paul.
Regina viarum, the so-called “Queen of Roads”. This was
the most important of all the Roman trade routes from
the time it was built in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius
on the site of an already existing road. Later it would be
extended, improved and flanked by monuments during the
periods of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Vespasian and Trajan. The
road’s foundation was of heavy stone blocks cemented together
with line mortar; over these were laid polygonal blocks of lava
that were smoothly and expertly fitted together. The road
averaged 4.15 metres in width with a pavement of 1.5 metres.
It ran from Rome to the port of Brindisi, through which trade
with the colonies in Greece and the East was funnelled. Its
verges are lined with striking monuments and ever-changing
scenery: aqueducts, villas, inscriptions, milestones, catacombs,
cemeteries, plains, hills, vineyards, cluster pines and woodlands.
It’s no longer the main route south but it remains an important
and tangible part of early Christian Rome: this is where
the first Greeks and Africans arrived; a little imagination and
you can almost hear the battle cries of the Horatii and the
Curiatii, and their duel to the death (according to Livy, when
the victorious Horatius returned, his sister cried out in grief
because she realized the Curiatius who she had been engaged
to was dead whereupon Horatius killed her too); or witness
the unstoppable progress of Hannibal as he led 2,000 cavalry
troops, the funeral of Scipio Africanus, or the pagan empress
Helena departing on her pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where she
was to build Christian churches and find the Cross of Christ;
this was also the route taken by Constantine when he moved
the capital of the Roman Empire to the banks of the Bosphorus;
marenostrum
appare: “Domine quo Vadis?”; e Cristo, probabilmente
deluso: “Venio iterum crucifigi”, vengo a farmi crocefiggere
Quelle pagane, secondo l’uso romano, rigorosamente fuori
per i defunti poveri, in mattoni e marmo per quelli ricchi;
all’altra e perfettamente identiche).
it was the place where St Paul was arrested; the site of Cicero’s
victorious return from Macedonia and Cleopatra’s famous entry
into the Seven Hills in pursuit of Julius Caesar; the location of
the proud appearance of the Syrian queen Zenobia, taken to
Rome as a hostage by the emperor Aurelian (her victor and
probably also her lover) and reputedly displayed to the crowd
in golden chains in his military triumph parade as a tribute to
her dignity and beauty. Legend also has this as the place where,
while fleeing from certain death in Rome, St Peter saw Christ
and asked, “Domine quo Vadis?” (“Where goest thou, Lord”),
to which Christ replied “Venio iterum crucifigi”, namely that he
was going to be crucified once more because Peter had abandoned
him. The Appian Way was also the scene of desperate,
vain attempts to flee by Roman tyrants; the sad retreats of
emperors en route to the southern islands; the flight of eloping
lovers or men dashing to meet their concubines. Today, the setting
remains very much a case of the sacred and the profane:
there are taverns and luxury hotels, villas with splendid gardens
and swimming pools, pagan tombs and Christian catacombs.
Laws in ancient Rome forbade burial within the city walls: most
Romans were cremated and here you can find the remains and
reconstructions of the tunnels used as catacombs, with brick
and marble designating the last resting places of the wealthy;
there are burial niches carved into walls surmounted by decorative
architectural elements of various shapes; or burial mounds
surrounded by low stone walls in accordance with Etruscan
customs (the tombs of the Horatii and the Curiatii lie side by
side and are perfectly identical). Further along is the circular
tomb of Cecilia Metella on huge travertine blocks: “a stern
città, costruita nelle mura aureliane 271 anni dopo Cristo e
passarono Carlo V imperatore e Marcantonio Colonna dopo
la vittoriosa battaglia di Lepanto. Dalla Porta (visitabile a
gruppi), è possibile compiere una passeggiata sulle mura;
Diocleziano, fu dallo stesso imperatore condannato a morte
perché si era fatto cristiano. Trafitto di frecce sul gradus
ivy grown”, as Byron describes it; there are
the remains of the tomb of Romulus, son of
Maxentius, who died young before he could
fulfil his father’s dream of becoming king of
Rome (hence that name). His inconsolable
father, who would eventually drown in the
Tiber as his army fled from Constantine, subsequently erected
the Circus of Maxentius in honour of Romulus; it had starting
gates and a track between towers with a barrier running down
the middle for chariot races; the tribute to his son included an
obelisk which was later moved to the centre of the fountain
of Pope Innocent III in Piazza Navona. Other tombs include
those of Seneca and the children of Pompeo; the pyramid with
the family tomb of Pomponius Atticus; the one with four magnificent
busts encased in terracotta: in the centre are a couple
holding hands, while the sides depict Usia Prima, priestess of Isis,
and Rabiria Demaris, portrayed with rather “punk-style” braids
on her forehead. But the most spectacular sight of all is the
Porta San Sebastiano, the gate in the Aurelian Wall built in 271
AD where the Via Appia Antica starts: a barrel vault topped by
two covered galleries and a chemin de ronde (raised protected
walkway) flanked by two round towers, with marble facing,
travertine slabs, brickwork and chambers housing weaponry. It
would have been almost impossible to pass through this gate
unscathed without an invitation. Unsuccessful attempts were
made in 1312 by Henry VII and soon after by the king of Naples
Roberto d’Angiò. On the other hand the emperor Charles V
and Marcantonio Colonna were welcomed in triumph following
the victorious Battle of Lepanto. From the Porta (open for
group tours) you can go for a stroll along a stretch of Rome’s
ancient walls or head for the San Sebastiano catacombs. The
da Santa Irene. Non contento di aver
testimoniato eroicamente la propria
fede, tornò per accusare di assassinio
Diocleziano che, questa volta, volle
essere sicuro di averlo fatto flagellare
a morte.
e gallerie. I cubicoli scavati nel tufo
hanno epigrafi in pietra e pitture
sul muro. Al tredicesimo chilometro
sotto il piano che sovrasta la basilica,
eretta quasi subito dopo la sua morte
in onore del santo trafitto, tre ben conservati
sepolcri decorati con pitture
(un banchetto funebre e il miracolo
dell’indemoniato di Gerasa: il primo,
ha l’iscrizione del proprietario, Clodius
Hermes, di 75 anni), una testa
di Gorgone, vasi di frutta e uccelli,
bellissimi tralci di vite; stucchi ben
conservati; un graffito con la sigla
composta dalle iniziali greche della
parola significante Gesù Cristo figlio
di Dio, Salvatore. Destinato ai pagani
poveri come cimitero a incinerazione
divenuto di proprietà dei cristiani nel
II secolo, fu destinato a inumazione e
nascondiglio dei cristiani in fuga dalle
persecuzioni romane. Dal III secolo,
poiché conservava i corpi di san Pietro
e san Paolo crocefissi, e quello del
trafitto santo raccolto nella Cloaca
Massima da mani pietose, divenne il
luogo più venerato da Roma. Stendhal,
tragedia”.
Christian martyr St Sebastian is said
to have been killed during the Roman
emperor Diocletian’s persecution of
Christians. Shot with arrows and left for
dead on the eastern slope of the Palatine
Hill at Elagabal, on a site that may have
been a Roman temple, he was rescued
and nursed back to health by the saint
Irene of Rome. Not content with his
first attempt at martyrdom, Sebastian
harangued Diocletian, who this time had
him clubbed to death.
“A place that grew out of a site made up
of the ashes of the dead and the ruins
of the underworld”, as Chateaubriand
described it, the San Sebastiano catacombs
consist of four underground levels
connected by stairways and corridors.
The walls of the small rooms carved out
of the soft tufa rock are covered in paintings
and inscriptions. Beneath the floor of
the basilica upstairs, which was erected
in honour of the martyr, there are three
well preserved (painted and stuccoed)
pagan tombs: one depicts a funeral
feast and Jesus exorcising the Gerasenes
demonic, and bears the inscription of
the owner (Clodius Hermes, aged 75);
there is also a Gorgon’s head, bowls
of fruit and birds, vine branches, and
graffiti including the Greek initials for a
word meaning Jesus Christ, Son of God,
Saviour. Originally used for the cremation
of poor pagans, these underground
burial cemeteries were taken over by the
then-burgeoning Christian movement
in the 2nd century, particularly in the
period before Christianity became the
established religion. From the 3rd century
onwards, because this was purportedly
the resting place of St Sebastian and also
the place where the bodies of the apostles
Peter and Paul are said to have been
laid for a time, it became Rome’s most
venerated site. Stendhal, who would
come here by horse-drawn carriage
and often stay till dusk, called it “a place
more sublime than tragedy”.

che sia, va mangiato
A cannolo, one of the
symbols of Sicily;
whatever the size and
topping, it should be eaten
very fresh.
maestri pasticceri italiani (Pasticceria Accardi, via
G. Amoroso 1, tel. 091.485797). In una ciotola, mescolate
500 g di farina 00, 50 g di zucchero, 50 g di strutto (o olio
d’oliva), 15 g di sale, 100 g di acqua. Aggiungete il lievito
di birra (20 g) e poi altra acqua (150 g): continuate a impastare,
finché otterrete un composto liscio e omogeneo, senza
grumi.
marenostrum
This is the main ingredient used in the city’s patisserie. Other
staples in the list of local sweet treats are candied fruit,
almond paste or martorana, pistachios and citrus fruits from
the Conca d’Oro (Palermo’s plain). All you have to do is get
out and about around Via Roma and the other main streets
of the city. Head for the scents of the markets (notably Ballarò
and the Vucciria) or the longest established patisseries. You’ll be
rewarded by an array of cassata, cannoli, ice cream and granita
(crushed ice drink).
Let’s imagine the ideal day out in Palermo for someone with a
sweet tooth. On a summer morning you could start by washing
down a croissant with iced coffee and cream. Or cappuccino
and cartoccio con la ricotta: this is a fried thin pastry roll with
sweet ricotta cheese and sugar on top. You can make a plain
doughnut version of this yourself at home, using the recipe
by Antonino Accardi, from the Palermo branch of the Italian
Academy of Master Pastry Chefs (Pasticceria Accardi, Via G.
Amoroso 1, tel. 091.485797). Mix in a bowl 500 g ‘00’ flour,
50 g sugar, 50 g lard (or olive oil), 15 g salt, 100 g water. Add
brewer’s yeast (20 g) and then more water (150 g); keep mixing
until the dough is smooth and even without any lumps. Cover
the bowl with cling film and leave it for 30 minutes. Divide the
dough into pieces of about 80 g each and shape them into balls;
61
62
marenostrum
per 30 minuti. Dividete l’impasto in
assorbente, passatele nello zucchero
semolato e poi spolveratele con zucchero
a velo.
a metà mattina, lasciatevi tentare
dai biscotti di mandorle, pistacchi o
pinoli (Oscar, via M. Migliaccio 39,
tel. 091.6822381). Oppure dalla frutta
martorana: piccole e colorate opere
d’arte di marzapane, a forma di frutta.
Da provare quelle dei Peccatucci di
Mamma Andrea (via Principe di Scordia
67, tel. 091.334835).
Dopo pranzo, niente di meglio di un
cannolo siciliano. Simbolo dell'isola,
è un croccante cilindro di pasta fritta
farcito con una soffice crema di ricotta
e zucchero e con gocce di cioccolato.
Una spolverata di zucchero a velo e
una scorza di arancia a guarnire (ma
si trovano anche con la granella di
pistacchio o le ciliegie candite) completano
il dolce. Attenzione: i cannoli,
grandi o piccoli che siano, vanno mangiati
appena riempiti. Per assaggiarli,
fate una sosta golosa da Alba (piazza
Don Bosco 7, tel. 091.309016) o alla
Pasticceria del Massimo (via A. Favara
14/16, tel. 091.333223).
All'ora della merenda, optate per una
genovese (mezza sfera di pasta frolla
cotta al forno, spolverata con zucchero
a velo) farcita con la ricotta, da
assaggiare tiepida. D'estate, invece,
è d'obbligo il gelato. Sarebbe stato
proprio un pescatore palermitano,
Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, a
inventarlo nella sua forma moderna e
a esportarlo a Parigi nel 1686. Due
buoni indirizzi sono Stancampiano (via
Notarbartolo 56, tel. 091.6817244) e
leave them for 5 minutes. Use your fingers
to make a hole in each ball of pastry
so as to form doughnuts. Wait 30 minutes
(for the dough to rise), then fry the
doughnuts one at a time in sunflower oil
(at about 175°C). Allow the doughnuts
to coil on greaseproof paper, dip them in
caster sugar then sprinkle with icing sugar.
Back to our tour of Palermo patisserie:
for morning tea, try the local almond, pistachio
or pine nut biscuits (Oscar, Via M.
Migliaccio 39, tel. 091.6822381). Or you
could sample the marzipan fruits at Peccatucci
di Mamma Andrea (Via Principe
di Scordia 67, tel. 091.334835).
After lunch, nothing can top a cannolo
siciliano. This classic fried thin pastry roll
is filled with sweet ricotta cheese and
chocolate chips. A sprinkling of icing sugar
and a sliver of orange peel (or chopped
pistachio or candied cherries) complete
the sweet. Whatever the size and topping,
your cannolo should be eaten very
fresh. A good place to try one is Alba
(Piazza Don Bosco 7, tel. 091.309016) or
else the Pasticceria del Massimo (Via A.
Favara 14/16, tel. 091.333223).
At afternoon teatime you might like to
opt for a genovese (a baked short crust
pastry shell sprinkled with icing sugar)
filled with ricotta and eaten warm. In
summer a gelato is a must, even more
so seeing that the locals claim that one
Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, a fisherman
from Palermo, actually perfected
ice cream and exported it to Paris in
1686. Two recommended gelato parlours
are Stancampiano (Via Notarbartolo
56, tel. 091.6817244) and Scimione (Via
Miceli 18/b, tel. 091.584448).
As an alternative, you could try the gelo
di melone, a typical watermelon-based
summer desert. You can take the taste of
Sicily home with you and try the recipe
Scimione (via Miceli 18/b, tel. 091.584448).
dell'Accademia (Pasticceria Cappello, via Colonna Rotta
68, via N. Garzilli 10, tel. 091.489601). Portate a bollore ¾
rimanente in cui avrete sciolto l'amido. Riportate a bollore,
marenostrum
for yourself. For 12 people: 1 litre watermelon juice, 250 g sugar,
60 g corn starch, gelatin, cinnamon and jasmine flavouring. The
recipe, provided by Salvatore Cappello, another member of
the Italian Academy (Pasticceria Cappello, Via Colonna Rotta
68, Via N. Garzilli 10, tel. 091.489601), is as follows: Boil ¾ of
the juice with the sugar; add the flavouring and the leftover
juice after dissolving the corn starch in it. Bring to the boil once
more, add the softened gelatin and pour into 12 glasses. Leave
to cool, then refrigerate for a couple of hours. Add your own
toppings, like pistachios or chocolate chips.
A sweet treat to end the day is the traditional Sicilian dessert
par excellence – cassata. Said by some to be a legacy of Arab
rule of the island from around the year 1000, the classic cassata
as we know it today dates back to the second half of the 19th century: the ingredients are sponge cake with almond paste
and a filling made with ricotta sweetened with sugar, vanilla
flavouring and chocolate chips; the cassata is decorated with
icing sugar and candied fruit. It’s sold in single slices or by the
kilo and a good place to try it is Costa (Via D’Annunzio 15, tel.
Vi è venuta l'acquolina in bocca? È normale, a Palermo.
seven layers including corn flakes, sponge cake, dark chocolate
mousse and hazelnut cream, with a last layer of mirror shiny
chocolate syrup.
There are other sweets linked to certain days of the year. Exam-
ples include the sfince di San Giuseppe (19 March, the best place
to try them is Magrì, Via Carini 42, tel. 091.584788), fritters
made with ricotta, chocolate chips and candied fruit, and the
crunchy biscuits on the “Festa di San Martino” (11 November).
Then there are the traditional Christmas sweetmeats like petraf-
ennulla, nougat with sugared almonds, cubbaita, made with
honey and sesame, and buccellato, a ring-shaped bun stuffed
with dried fruit, sultanas, chocolate, orange peel and Marsala
wine. Carnival is the time of year when the locals eat pignoccata,
honey-covered fritter balls.
Is your mouth watering? That’s par for the course in Palermo.
The sweet heart of Sicily is a waiting to be discovered – and
tasted.

A partire
Sousse is, with its 130,000-plus inhabitants, Tunisia’s third
largest city offering a combination of historical sites, an
adjoining strip of modern hotels and splendid beaches.
The highlight is the fantastic Medina, with its golden stone
crenellated ramparts overlooking the sea. The old town is a
maze of narrow alleyways concealing a range of stalls, little
mosques and elaborate minarets. This UNESCO World Heritage
Site originally included the harbour and arsenal. Looking at
the horizon, you can still picture how impressive it must have
been to see ships approaching via Bab el-Bahr, the huge port
that extends from Ribat to the Great Mosque.
Except for the courtyard, the latter is off-limits to non-Muslims.
Seen from outside, the mosque looks more like a fortress than
a place of worship, with stone walls and corner towers. It’s
Sousse’s third oldest monument and the part open to the general
public includes the splendid white marble flooring. This was
designed so that it slopes inwards slightly towards the middle,
allowing rainwater run-off to drain to a tank below ground
level. There’s a colonnade on three sides of the courtyard, with
arched vaults supported by low pillars. On the southern side,
there’s an arcade leading to the reading room reserved for
Muslims, with its imposing marble arches and ceiling decorated
with large chandeliers as well as the aghlabide or dome.
You get a good view of the city by following the road above the
Ribat buttresses.
The simple square layout should not be misinterpreted. In actual
fact this was a place of prayer inhabited by warrior-brothers.
This explains the defensive walls, cylindrical towers and lookout
point (Nador). The view from the top is spectacular; you can
see over the whole city and the medieval walls. Below are the
old cells flanking the ochre stone courtyard. The superb prayer
room is the oldest surviving African mosque; it is divided into
two barrel vaults by large cruciform pillars.
inizia in rue d’Angleterre.
Fino a
rue de Paris, in un susseguirsi di ceramiche, tessuti, gioielli
e profumi.
in a variety of languages, and soak up the sensations and scents
of the marketplace, you’ve come to the right place. Here, in
Rue d’Angleterre, is where the covered souk starts. Er-Reba is
the part of the bazaar for fabric, while El-Caid is the souk for
blacksmiths’ workshops. You come out in Rue de Paris, which
is brimming with pottery, more fabric, jewellery and perfume.
There are also crafts and leather goods stalls. Overlooked by
many, but a must-see, the small El-Kobba museum has a collec-
tion of local art and artefacts, including a replica Moorish café.
While, you’re here, you shouldn’t miss the chance to go out
onto the terrace, which affords a view over the elegant minaret
of Zaouia Zakkak, once a magnificent residence and unfortunately
not open to the public.
If you head towards Rue el-Mar and Rue el-Hadira you come to
the Sofra Romanesque water tank, and the Sidi Ali el-Ammar
and Bou Ftata mosques. At the top of the Medina is the old
Kasbah, which has expanded over the centuries. In the middle
of the castle is Khalef, the huge square tower, with its manar,
originally a lookout and later converted into a lighthouse. From
Inu-
marenostrum
here there are fabulous views over the city and environs. One
of the wings of the Kasbah houses another must-see in Sousse,
namely the local Archaeological Museum. The collection
includes some of the most perfectly preserved Roman mosaics
you’ll ever see and stunning works portraying ancient Greek
mythology: the heads of Medusa and Oceanus, the Triumph of
Bacchus and Zeus abducting Ganymede.
As already mentioned, the Pearl of the Sahel has two faces. The
first is art and the ancient, while the second is a fantastic and
unexpected modern beach resort called Port el-Kantaoui.
Just a few kilometres from Sousse this marina and elegant run
of hotels has been likened to Porto Cervo in Sardinia. The
coastline here consists of an endless stretch of stunning sandy
beach which rarely gets crowded. Unlike Sousse, this part of
Tunisia has not retained its distinctly Arab flavour, but if you
want a beach-based break you’ll love it here. There are also
lots of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.
In no other European (or Western)
city will you find another street like
Naples’ Via San Gregorio Armeno.
Not a single sign of modernity or
even a shop window
The timeless atmosphere of this most picturesque of
streets is created by the workshops all the way along it;
they specialise in the making of presepi, or Christmas crib
scenes. This is a Neapolitan tradition that attracts visitors
from all over the world and its roots are just as ancient as
the local architectural setting. The nativity scenes combine
the sacred and the profane, a cross between Jerusalem and
Athens, between emotion and reason. Via San Gregorio is
a world apart, which looks forward rather than back; this
is why the displays go well beyond the traditional manger
scene and often include an entire village inhabited by modern
figures and celebrities. Everyone really must come here at
least once and see the artisans in action. The street winds
its way between the Decumano Superiore and Inferiore. The
workshops are busy all year round but they start turning out
the figures for the Christmas crèche at the end of November.
Figurines were carved for nativity scenes in the 18 th century
by famous artists like Sanmartino (who carved The Veiled
Christ) or “il Mosca”. They are veritable works of art and are
exhibited in museums around the world. Examples include
the work of Enrico Cuciniello at the Museo di San Martino,
the collection of cribs at the Bavarian National Museum
in Munich or the valuable collections owned by the Banco
di Napoli (the presepe at the Cappella Palatina in Palazzo
Reale is a splendid example). At the same time, every year
private Neapolitan citizens set up their own Christmas cribs,
traditionally the main focus of the festive season’s domestic
decorations. It need not be elaborate or expensive but it’s
an important custom and one that is respected to the extent
that, since the 19 th century, it has been perceived as an inner
need by many Italians; as Marco Ferrigno, one of the leading
nativity scene craftsmen puts it, the presepe is synonymous
with family and conviviality.
Neapolitan cribs feature historical figures from the period of

Maradona a Cavani? Una spiegazione c’è. “I “personaggi
sfida ogni legge fisica
sulla impenetrabilità dei
non solo: gli ambientalisti
dovrebbero erigerla a
più pedonalizzata di questa,
nemmeno le biciclette
pare vi sono ammesse.
Vale la pena raccontare
di alcune curiosità che
aleggiano su San Gregorio.
Solo pochi sanno
che, nell’atrio di palazzo,
salendo a sinistra, si
trova una lunga lapide
che afferma essere nato
in quella casa addirittura
San Gennaro. Si fa fatica a
credere che una lapide -di
per sé emblema di serietà
ed autorevolezza- certifichi
una bugia così clamorosa.
E sapete chi verso la
metà del 700 convinse il
grande re Carlo di Borbone
a costruire i pastori in
legno?
King Ferdinand inaugurated the custom whereby the finest nativity scene
would be paid a royal Christmas visit, by doing just this with great pomp at
Principe di Ischitella in 1788.
Herod and Salome. But if it’s such an age-old tradition, why
contaminate it by adding modern elements? Washing on the
line, the carpenter with his plane, the blacksmith with his
forge, the washerwoman by the stream can be found sideby-side
with contemporary figures ranging from Totò to Eduardo
De Filippo, the Pope, Berlusconi, Maradona and Naples
FC footballer Cavani. There’s a reason. Marco Ferrigno
explains: “The ‘personalities
of the year’ are displayed as
a form of satire, as a celebration
of Neapolitan imagination
and irony, and also as a
marketing operation. They’re
what attracts the attention,
but then the customer ends
up buying the centuries-old
evergreen characters.”
Via San Gregorio Armeno
Lungo appears to challenge
the laws of physics, especially
in the lead-up to Christmas
when the throng is wallto-wall.
The workshops
and their wares provide a
spectacle that is pure street
theatre from November to
January. The street is also
a shining example of environmental
excellence. It’s a
totally pedestrian precinct
and they don’t even allow
bicycle access apparently.
Some interesting facts: not
many people are aware
that in the entrance to
one of the buildings on the
left as you go up Via San
Gregorio, there’s a plaque
claiming that none other
than Naples’ patron saint
San Gennaro was born on
the premises. It’s hard to
believe that such a blatant
lie could be given this official
seal of certification. And
who was it around the
middle of the 18 th century
that persuaded the great
king Charles of Bourbon
to commission wooden
statues of shepherds for the manger scene? A friar by the
name of Rocco who also convinced the monarch to build the
large palazzo in Piazza Carlo III, Europe’s biggest homeless
tanto per finire in gossip
oggi tanto di moda: nel
convento di San Gregorio
gli storici hanno appurato
di monache impegnate
a trascorrere notti assai
disinvolte. Nulla di scandaloso
per noi abituati a
vederne di tutto e di più.
Ed ancora, oggi ci si chiede
come mai dal presepe
sia scomparsa la statuina
della donna incinta o perché
gli artigiani non realizzino
quelle raffiguranti
il diavolo.
Ma quanto vale San
Gregorio Armeno sotto
il profilo economico?
Non disponiamo di cifre
aggiornate, ma, in base
a qualche stima, si può
azzardare, che negli ultimi
decenni, da 200 mila
sono saliti a circa mezzo
milione i pastori fabbricati
ogni anno a San Gregorio
marenostrum
shelter. The locals will tell you that the Neapolitan presepe,
with its figurines celebrating the dispossessed, the hungry,
beggars and other shepherd characters, was conceived by
the lower classes to enliven the Christmas celebrations of
the bourgeoisie, patricians and courtiers. King Ferdinand
is said to have inaugurated the custom whereby the finest
nativity scene would be paid a royal Christmas visit, by doing
just this with great pomp
at Principe di Ischitella in
1788. And, to finish on a
more irreverent note: in the
convent of San Gregorio
historians have discovered
that the nuns were more
earthly than spiritual in their
choice of nocturnal pursuits.
Not that we should be
surprised by this, given the
number of scandals that fill
the pages of today’s gossip
sheets. Observers have also
noted the disappearance of
a couple of stock characters
from the Christmas crib
“cast” – namely, the pregnant
woman and the devil.
How much is San Gregorio
Armeno actually
worth economically? No
recent statistics are available
but, according to estimates,
in the last couple
of decades the number of
figurines made each year
has increased from 200,000
to around half a million,
with sales in the millions (of
euros). In the peak month of
December alone, the street
clocks up sales of approximately
2 million euros. Business
is concentrated mainly
in the two months around
Christmas but the activity of designing, carving and painting
continues all year round as it has done for centuries with
amazing continuity. A new addition to the celebrity figurines
this year is the recently elected Mayor Luigi De Magistris.
“This only confirms,” he says, “that anything goes in Naples.”
One thing is for sure: the new Mayor likes the city’s presepe,
unlike Lucariello – the main character in the play by Eduardo
de Filippo, Natale in casa Cupiello – who would have been
an ideal soul mate for Dickens’ Scrooge. But perhaps today,
Lucariello too would change his mind about this showpiece
of Neapolitan inventiveness.
marenostrum
dio ignoto, terribile, distruttivo.
climbed up the sacred mountain amidst the olive groves,
I in search of the prehistoric precinct handed down first to
the ancient Greeks and then to humanity as a whole; I was
looking for a site from mythology hidden from the sea. Here,
in Delphi, I found a mysterious sculpture that prompted
me to imagine ancient peoples with advanced civilisations,
perhaps wiped out by a nuclear confrontation – like in the
film Planet of the Apes – that left the survivors with an old
nuclear warhead, symbolising an unknown, vengeful, destructive
god.
Were these the fantasies of an accidental tourist? Delphi is
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was first settled in the
Neolithic period (4000 BC), when ancient rituals were celebrated
in a cave on Mount Parnassus. So Delphi’s origins
date back to prehistory and ancient Greek mythology. In
the beginning this sacred site was guarded by the serpent
Pytho, eventually slain by Apollo. Legend recounts that the
latter first came to Delphi in the form of a dolphin, carrying
Cretan priests on his back; in any event the sanctuary was
founded by people from Crete who landed in the harbour
town of Kirrha. Today Delphi is one of the world’s most
templi, tesori (piccoli templi lussuosi negli ornamenti) donati
potrai trovarlo nemmeno fuori. Se ignori le meraviglie della
popular archaeological sites and a must for anyone wishing
to understand classical Greece. From 1880 onwards French
archaeologists carried out major excavations to reveal many
superb buildings, temples and treasures (small ornately decorated
shrines) donated by the peoples of the Mediterranean.
The millions of pilgrims of centuries past have been replaced
by hordes of tourists, scholars and adventurers. During the
classical period, the Delphic Oracle Pythia (originally the serpent’s
wife) and the site itself were both dedicated to Apollo.
My imagination was racing again amidst these ancient columns
and I found myself projected back 2000 years together with
Pythia, prophesying. The priestess of the Oracle would sit on
a tripod seat inside the temple over an opening in the earth,
intoxicated by the fumes and vapours rising from this fissure
and falling into a trance. I read the words: Know thyself. I
picture the scene as a suppliant consults the priestess on the
fate of a colony and asks whether he will return victorious or
whether, instead, his destiny is merely to shepherd his father’s
herds. The priestess replies: “Whoever thou art - Know thyself.
If thou canst learn the true nature of thine own self, thou
wilt know the reality of the universe. In thy true Self thou wilt
tua casa, come pretendi di trovare altre meraviglie? In te si
trova occulto il Tesoro degli Dei. Oh Uomo, conosci te stesso
e conoscerai l’Universo e gli Dei. Oracolo di Delfi». I miei
incontrarono a Delfi.
profetizzare.
find the Eternal Truth, the Infinite Source of all phenomena.
By knowing this thou wilt know God and His whole creation.
Oracle of Delphi.” My friends applaud this quotation. I turn
to the guide and ask, “Why did the ancient peoples of the
Mediterranean say that this is the omphalos, the navel of the
world?” Back comes the explanation: “Tradition has it that
Zeus sent out two eagles (or swans) to fly across the world
and meet at its centre, and they met here in Delphi. But we
also have a less “divine” explanation of the Oracle. According
to Diodorus and some other sources, it was a local goat
herder called Coretas who discovered the oracular powers
of Delphi. One day he noticed that one of his goats, who fell
into a crack in the earth, was behaving strangely. On entering
the chasm, he found himself filled with a divine presence and
could see outside of the present into the future. So Pythia
placed her tripod seat here to experience the convulsions
and divine inspirational trances.” I wonder for a moment if

Pizia, per assorbire meglio i vapori emessi, finire in estasi, e
così essere più vicina al Dio». Io sacerdotessa intontita dai
spropositate e molto gustose. Ouzo, liquore all’anice, per finire.
Meraviglioso il pastitsio, carne trita e besciamella al forno;
il mizithra, formaggio di pecora molto saporito. Mussakà,
parakalò? Nè, efharistò (sì, grazie) - dico all'amico taverniere
I’m in a frenzied state myself but then dismiss the idea and
go back to thinking about the scientific validity of all the
archaeological studies.
THE ACROPOLIS
I’d like to wander around this ancient site and be detached
and cynical, but I can’t help succumbing to the appeal of the
myths and legends. So, before going in, I have a ritual sip of
the sacred Castalian spring of Delphi, said to be a fountain
of youth. The excavations are located along the main Sacred
Way and supported by the retaining Polygonal Wall. My
mind starts wandering again: did superior beings hew, lift and
stack these huge boulders on which pilgrims to the sanctuary
carved inscriptions showing their votive offerings to Apollo
and the Delphic Oracle? Before leaving I head for the theatre
originally built in the 4th century BC; it could seat 5,000 spectators
and affords a breathtaking view of the entire sanctuary
and the valley below.
AND AT THE END OF THE VISIT...
The Sanctuary of Apollo lies in the ravine of the Phedriades,
a semicircular spur on multiple plateaux. At the foot of the
main archaeological complex is the Delphi Museum. Following
the visit, with my head still reeling from the heady
mixture of myth, legend, nature and art, I stop at one of a
series of little local taverns with cute names like “Epikouros”
or “Vakchos”. Here, I go into a feeding frenzy amidst the
Mediterranean spices, summery Greek salads and stuffed
vegetables. I devour the local grapes (small, sweet and seedless)
and outrageously big juicy watermelon. Ouzo (aniseed
liqueur) to round things off. Without forgetting the delicious
tzatziki sauce (made with yogurt, cucumber and garlic). If only
I could also try the yemistà, baked tomatoes and peppers
stuffed with rice and cooked with potatoes; the dolmades,
vine leaves stuffed with rice and meat; and the souvlaki, with
pieces of lamb and pork grilled on a skewer. Hey, and what
about the pastitsio, Greece’s answer to lasagne, and mizithra,
very tasty goat’s milk cheese? Mussakà, parakalò? Nè,
efharistò (Yes, please), I say to my friend the tavern owner.
The local white wine goes down a treat and, if anything,
makes my memory of Delphi even happier.
