HARDWOOD FLOORS OF

HARDWOOD FLOORS OF HILLSBORO Continued The true start of the business was when Barnes, at the time a dairy farmer, installed long lengths of White Ash flooring in his own home. Friends loved it. In his spare time he installed long length flooring in their homes. By 2000, a floor sanding, finishing and installation business took off for Barnes, who had no previous lumber-related experience in contrast to Salena Ball, who worked at a lumber yard contractor counter for 13 years. She came to Hardwood Floors of Hillsboro wanting her own Oak floors refurbished. “She knew so much about lumber I hired her,” said Barnes. Ball started in 2003 and bought out Barnes’ previous partner in 2007. The company transitioned into wholesale flooring sales the same year, and gradually built up business to get into company-owned facilities. That was before the housing crash, the company survived, and increased sales every year. For that too, Barnes gives much credit to vendors. Barnes sees the business continuing a controlled growth but not at the cost of quality. With relatively new employees and woodworkers in a new plant built from the ground up, he wants to see everyone get to a comfortable level before starting on plans to meet demand needs with increased production. The company’s growth pattern is steady as Barnes promotes the No. 2 and Better flooring product to get people Rosenberry 2016-2_Layout 1 4/5/16 10:48 AM Page 1 to notice it and its quality. The company’s strength is in being small, said Barnes. “We can do special things, not just 2.25-inch and 3.25-inch flooring. We can change it up and do what we need to do. We’re very particular people. If it’s not right it doesn’t go out. A lot of people talk about quality but don’t follow through.” In addition to quality service to customers, Hardwood Floors of Hillsboro is involved in the community. At the end of each year, the manufacturer makes a large contribution to the local food pantry and supports local high school students by offering summer employment in the wood industries to juniors and seniors. Barnes is joined by a tight knit group of 13 employees operating under a family environment that provides quality and service lacking in the U.S., said Barnes. “We provide more than lip service. We’re big on action and take every order personally.” The NWFA-member company is guided by a motto that has underpinned it from the beginning: If we wouldn’t put it in our house, we won’t sell it to you.n Contact 608-489-2828 for more information. CLARK LUMBER CO. Continued from page 19 Shown here is a logging site being repaired and seed being sown to ensure no erosion takes place. Clark Lumber is very proud and relentless in focusing on timber sustainability in their area. The company works with about 12 to 14 logging crews and the firm goes to many measures to support their loggers. For example, Clark Lumber is a sponsor of the Master Logger Program in their area and has been for years. “About 95 percent of the logs that go through our five sawmills are either harvested by Master Loggers or are bought from Master Loggers. In other words, almost all our loggers went through classes and maintained certification through the Tennessee Forestry Association,” Hugh Wayne Clark, who oversees the log and timber procurement, explained. Also, once a year in December, Clark Lumber Company hosts a logger appreciation breakfast for all area loggers. Another way Clark Lumber maintains its natural, renewable resource of local timberland is by employing a person to go to the landowner after logging takes place to check and see that everything was done correctly. Clark said, “Five years ago we made that commitment that if we are going to harvest somebody’s timber, we are going to personally check back with each landowner when we are done harvesting timber from their land and ask each and every one of them if everything is okay as we agreed upon. If any landowner has a complaint, we’ll fix it right away to their complete satisfaction.” Clark Lumber takes their locally-sourced timber then provides lumber products to customers around the world. For local customers, many of which are furniture manufacturers in areas of North Carolina and other states, the company operates 12 of its own trucks to haul lumber, cants and ties to their more local customers, and to bring logs back to the mills for processing.
