HARdWood fEdERATIon fLY-In Continued from page 22 HF membership made her a more informed and effective member of the Senate. HF noted that one member of the U.S. House that comes to the job with a wealth of experience is Congressman Bruce Westerman (R-AR, 4) who spoke at the Fly-In. Congressman Westerman is a trained Forester and Engineer with a degree from the Yale Graduate School of Forestry. He provided an overview of his time in Congress and how vital it is to get more industry representatives to Washington to help him as he fights for lumber industry issues. The association will be holding its 2017 Annual Meeting March 21 - 22, at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. And if your company is engaged in the manufacture, processing, or distribution of solid Cypress or veneers, mark your calendars and plan to be in Charleston. Meeting details will be finalized soon. n AHEC Continued from page 14 Following on from the Lacey Act Amendment and EUTR, governments in a number of other U.S. Hardwood export markets have adopted similar risk-based legislation. These countries include Australia, Indonesia, and Norway. Japan’s ruling party also recently announced it intends to develop a similar law. The American Hardwood Environmental Profiles (AHEPs), which can now be issued for individual consignments of U.S. Hardwood exported by AHEC members to anywhere in the world, also draw on the Seneca Creek study alongside FIA data to demonstrate legality and sustainability at the original place of harvest. This information is combined with data on other environmental impact categories (carbon footprint, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, etc.) derived from the LCA study in an innovative tool to quantify the environmental impact of U.S. Hardwoods from cradle to point of delivery at the importer’s yard. The update is expected to be delivered in early 2017 and will be subjected to an extensive peer-review process. n Contact: Mike Tarbell, Sales Manager Rus Gustin (814) 697-7185 FAX (814) 697-7190 44 NOVEMBER 2016 n NATIONAL HARDWOOD MAGAZINE 25,000,000 BF of Quality Bandsawn Pennsylvania Hardwoods 1,500,000 BF Kiln Capacity Export Packaging & Container Loading SPECIALIZING IN ASH, RED OAK, HARD MAPLE and CHERRY “We welcome your inquiries and look forward to serving your needs.” Mailing Address 1716 Honeoye Road Shinglehouse PA 16748 E-mail: mtarbell@ramforestproducts.com We sell both green and kiln dried lumber.

NWFA Continued from page 15 It also is important to note that wood is the most environmentally friendly flooring option available. You can learn all about the environmental benefits of wood flooring from the National Wood Flooring Association at http://woodfloors.- org/environmental-benefits.aspx. The NWFA is a not-for-profit trade organization, with more than 3,000 member companies world-wide, dedicated to educating consumers, architects, designers, specifiers and builders in the uses and benefits of wood flooring. The NWFA can be contacted at 800-422-4556 (USA and Canada), 636-519-9663 (local and international), or on-line at www.nwfa.org. n LAKE STATES Continued from page 8 hands on right now,” the contact said. The U.S. customers this source is selling to are mainly end-use manufacturers, and according to him they are optimistic about the fall and winter markets. “For me it doesn’t matter if they think it’s going to be a strong market. What I need to see are the invoices that prove they’re buying, and then I’ll sit back and agree with them. It doesn’t pay to have anyone think that things will be busy.” Style trends in the furniture industry are leading to heightened demand for Walnut, Poplar and Cherry, according to a contact in Michigan. “Quartersawn Hardwood is the hot item right now, and one of the biggest sellers for my cabinet making customers is Quartersawn White Oak. Soft Maple is another species that has prospered lately in the cabinet industry, because it’s relatively low-cost and can be stained to look like more premium-priced woods like Cherry.” Prices on Red Oak are expected to hit a ceiling soon, the source mentioned. “The level I’ve seen Red Oak log prices stall out at is usually around ,250. Right now manufacturers of 4/4 green Red Oak are making a premium off it, but I’m predicting it’ll soon have to come back down because everyone will be offering it and it’ll oversaturate the market.” Ohio saw slow yet steady markets throughout the summer and early fall, according to a source that sells Hardwood throughout the Lake States area. “I think we’re going to see some changes in the overall inventories that suppliers carry,” the contact said. “This time last year we were struggling to fill large orders for White Oak, our main product, because the demand was so high. Now, the second those logs hit the yard you can hold an auction and the sawmills and stave manufacturers are willing to break out the checkbook to compete for that timber. And the bigger the log, the more they’ll pay.” The contact went on to say that besides stave manufacturers the customers he sells Hardwoods to are end-use manufacturers who make furniture, particularly Amish oper- Please turn the page DOWNES & READER HARDWOOD INC HARDWOOD CO., INC.
