WINSTON HARDWOOD INC.

WINSTON HARDWOOD INC. Continued Johnson said the sorter has created opportunities for Winston Hardwood to cut thicker stock. “We cut our Poplar in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses,” he explained. “In Red Oak we also cut 4/4 through 8/4 and in White Oak we cut 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4 as well.” With a total dry kiln capacity of 120,000 board feet, the company utilizes two Nyle dry kilns. Each kiln has a capacity of 60,000 board feet. Johnson explained, “We run Nyle’s electric dehumidification kilns. We learned that with our thicker stock approach in White Oak, dehumidification is a good kiln because we can handle it gently from green to 30 percent moisture content and it produces bright, flat lumber. We’ve been very pleased with our choice in Nyle dry kilns.” Winston Hardwood dips its green Hardwood lumber with chemicals from Buckman Laboratories Dip Chemical. Johnson offered, “We dip our flooring Oak and better lumber in Busan. We use sap stain control and brightener provided by Buckman and we like the product.” Key personnel at Winston Hardwood includes Johnson’s family. “My wife Brenda handles a lot of the clerical and accounts payable,” Johnson said. “My brother-in-law Derek Bray is our log yard manager and Lynn Dempsey, who’s been with us over 20 years, is our sawmill supervisor. In quality control and kiln operator we have Bill Robinson who is a NHLA graduate. Wayne Reason is head of maintenance and we call him ‘MacGyver.’ In today’s modern mills you must have a lot of technology experience and Wayne has that background among others.” Head of logistics is Robby Johnson who is Johnson’s brother. “Robby doubles a lot in human resources and in production coordination and general management,” Johnson said. “My son Matt is one of our inspectors and Shane Pate, who’s been with us 20 years, is our chief inspector. CLEEREMAN CONTROLS Continued from page 27 is Controls in 2001, Dan was there,” he said. “He left in 2005 and went into the paper industry but kept his toes in the sawmill industry with a local sawmill for which he worked part-time as their controls engineer. He and I had kept in touch and would have lunch several times a year. When it came time to bring another person on board to accelerate our plans here at Cleereman, Dan was the first person who Cleereman Controls office in Vancouver, WA is pictured. came to mind. I knew his work ethic and his knowledge. We brought him on board in April and he has been focused on the 3-D scanning portion of our controls, which has allowed us to have two streams of development going on between the two of us, not to mention Cleereman Industries has an engineering department staff that we share ideas with.” Paul Cleereman said the company can be contacted at any time for support on their products and services. “We want to let our customers know that we’re here for the long haul.
