LAKE STATES Continued from page 8 shut down. I don’t know if that will pick up or not. 4/4 No. 1 Common Ash has been dead for quite some time,” he said. “Hard Maple, Select and Better in White has been inactive for quite some time. Red Oak has been OK, but is probably in a little bit of a lull currently. However, the low-grade market has been good.” He, too, sells to such end users as cabinet, moulding, flooring and pallet manufacturers. No particular species, grade or thickness has been a sales standout, the source noted. “Soft Maple and Ash have been OK. Aspen No. 1 is probably a little hotter than the Select has been.” n NORTHEAST Continued from page 8 explained. “However, I know companies who do exports are crying because of the China situation.” This lumber representative acknowledged that the tariff situation also is hurting his business. “A lot of sawmills are starting to do the orders that I typically would do. In the past, they’ve always sent half a truckload. Now, they’re doing half packs and packs, and that’s my business.” Poplar and Soft Maple are his company’s best-selling species, all uppers in 4/4 to 16/4 thickness. His product stock list includes all domestic Hardwoods. His customers are retail lumber yards and local end use manufacturers. n SOUTHEAST Continued from page 9 In regard to transportation, he noted, “It has been pretty good in the last six months.” A lumber representative in Mississippi described good, steady business on the industrial side, “but I hear all kinds of worrisome stories out there. I guess it’s partially a function of what you’ve been doing, and I spend a lot of time on the industrial side.” Otherwise, he mainly sells Red Oak, in No. 2 Common and No. 3 Common; Poplar in No. 2 Common; and mill-run Gum, all in 4/4 thickness, to end users. “Red Oak is king, particularly in the Southeast, but the market on the uppers has mostly disappeared from what I’ve been told, and I don’t see a lot of relief in sight,” he said, adding that prices on industrial-grade lumber have dropped in the last few weeks. “Industrial prices have been very, very high so I expected to see those come down.” n 25,000,000 BF of Quality Bandsawn Pennsylvania Hardwoods 1,500,000 BF Kiln Capacity Export Packaging & Container Loading SPECIALIZING IN ASH, RED OAK, HARD MAPLE and CHERRY “We welcome your inquiries and look forward to serving your needs.” Contact: Mike Tarbell, Sales Manager Rus Gustin (814) 697-7185 FAX (814) 697-7190 Mailing Address 1716 Honeoye Road Shinglehouse PA 16748 E-mail: mtarbell@ramforestproducts.com Ram half Converted Oct 2018.indd 1 SEPTEMBER 2019 n NATIONAL HARDWOOD 9/26/18 MAGAZINE 2:02 PM 65
