HICKORY, NC– GRASCHE USA, located here, has announced a new Carbide Grade KCR18+, tough enough to handle knots, but it lasts up to two times longer, according to the company. 70 SEPTEMBER 2019 n NATIONAL HARDWOOD MAGAZINE

A statement from Grasche noted that choosing the right grade of Carbide Insert Knife for machining Hardwoods used to be a compromise between toughness and runtime. Furthermore, Grasche stated, if you wanted more tool run-time you had to choose a harder carbide grade and risk chipping or breaking the knife; if you wanted less knife breakage you had to choose a softer carbide grade and reduce the tool life significantly. Now thanks to a new carbide grade technology from Ceratizit in Luxembourg and distributed by GRASCHE USA, the compromise between tool life and impact resistance is alleviated. This new carbide grade – called KCR18+ – uses a 10 percent corrosion resistant submicron chrome binder that offers the toughness of a soft carbide and the runtime of a hard carbide without slipping or breaking. Most carbide knife wear when cutting wood is due to chemical corrosion from acids and moisture not mechanical wear, according to Grasche. By using a corrosion resistant chrome binder vs the old cobalt binder and making the carbide powder less than a micron thick (sub-micron) it improves tool life significantly in knotty or tough Hardwood applications.
