INTRODUCTION
The 25 th volume of the LKMA Metraštis (LCAS Chronicle) notes the anniversary
of the acceptance of Saint Casimir as a saint and the 400 th anniversary of the
church in Vilnius in his honor. The articles were presented at a conference organized
by the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science together with the Archdiocese
of Vilnius and the Jesuits of Vilnius on the eve of the St. Casimir anniversary on 8
May 2004 at the Jesuit high school in Vilnius.
The section of newly published materials, prepared by Algimantas Katilius
and dr. Paulius Subačius, contains the sermon of Rev. Šipovski in 1872 on the occasion
of the St. Casimir celebration. This allows one to feel the similarities and
differences in the views of Lithuanian Catholics at the end of the 19 th and the beginning
of the 21 st centuries, to comprehend the continuity of the four hundred
years of respect for the Holy Guardian of Lithuania’s people, the vitality of the enduring
tradition, and the transformation in traditions through time.
In 2003–2004 there were many scholarly conferences. In addition to the previously
mentioned conference, the texts of papers read at other conferences organized
by the LKMA independently or in cooperation with other scholarly institutions or
scholarly articles based on these papers are published. These are the conference
„From the History of the Žemaičių Kalvarija (Samogitian Calgary) and Its Regions“
held in Žemaičių Kalvarija on 25–26 July 2004 on the anniversary devoted
to the 750 th anniversary of the first mention of Žemaičių Kalvarija (Gardai) in
written sources; a conference on the 100 th anniversary of the birth of Bishop Vincentas
Padolskis; and a conference commemorating the 10 th anniversary of the Catholic
Religion Department of the Vilnius Pedagogical University.
We believe that many readers with different interests will find the scholarly
articles on various topics interesting. This section begins with an article by Bishop
Jonas Boruta, SJ about Archbishop Mečislovas Reinys. The article should have been
published in the 24 th volume of the LKMA Metraštis along with the other papers
read at the conference „Archbishop Mečislovas Reinys – Pastor and Martyr“.
We thus invite the reader to review again the articles of the conference devoted to
Reinys published in volume 24 of the LKMA Metraštis. Only in this way will a
complete image of our great Pastor and LKMA Academician be made.
We hope that this volume will encourage Lithuanian Catholic scholars to continue
to analyze the themes and problems raised in it as well as seek new topics.
