numerous realistic and sometimes even openly naturalistic motives, the much more lyrical poetic parallel<br />

of bullet and bee could be discerned, encountered not only in Lithuanian, but also in Latvian military<br />

songs. a special place in the late Lithuanian military-historical folksongs is occupied by the motives of<br />

the soldiers’ graves, the collective burials in the unhallowed ground, and death without funeral. the<strong>ir</strong><br />

analysis highlighted the relevance between the folkloric images depicting funerals of the slain soldiers<br />

and tending to the<strong>ir</strong> graves, created in the folksongs, with the general religious and cultural notions<br />

cherished by the Lithuanian society during the 19 th – the f<strong>ir</strong>st half of the 20 th century and the funeral<br />

customs as a whole.<br />
