Wanneer ‘n mens die werke van Thomas bestudeer, word die oorweldigende invloed wat
Aristoteles op sy denke uitgeoefen het, duidelik weerspieël. Nie alleen in sy teologie en
filosofie nie, maar veral ook in sy communitas-leer is hierdie invloed duidelik
aanwysbaar. 2 In Thomas Aquinas se geskrifte het die Middeleeuse skolastiek nie alleen
sy hoogtepunt en sy skoonste uitdrukking gevind nie, maar sy denke het ‘n beslissende
invloed op die Westerse beskawingsontwikkeling tot vandag toe uitgeoefen. Die opkoms
en snelle verbreding van die Neo-Thomisme is dan ook een van die belangrikste gebeure.
Gedurende die afgelope twee dekades het die skolastiek en by name die Thomisme ‘n
ongelooflike opbloei belewe. Hierdie fenomenale groei kan veral toegeskryf word aan
die invloed wat verskeie briljante Neo-Thomistiese denkers op die filosofiese terrein
uitgeoefen het. Vir die na-oorlogse Europa het veral één man, Jacques Maritain, se
werke die krag en gesag van ‘n profetiese woord gedra. Met onvermoeide geesdrif en
ywer het hy daarin geslaag om die Thomisme in ‘n nuwe denkpatroon te giet en dit
sodoende aanvaarbaar te maak vir die mens van die twintigste eeu.
Bluhm skryf hieroor soos volg:
“In our time, Jacques Maritain,as a Neo-Thomist, has been the apostle of a new
Respublica Christiana, a new Christendom. And like Thomas, he writes as a challenger
of established patterns of thought and a herald of the new. But the situations of the two
thinkers are not alike. First, Thomas wrote for a Christian culture while ours is
dominantly secular, or rather, pluralistic. Secondly, Maritain wrote in the ruins of the
first Christendom, and in the aftermath of hundreds of years of destructive criticism both
of Thomistic faith and of Thomistic reason. And lastly, the experience of the two world
wars, the accelerating pollution of the environment, and the constant threat of a nuclear
cataclysm make it hard for modern man to be very optimistic about human reason. These
differences in historical situation make for a considerable difference in the tone and the
