TUKAQ TEATRET speelt 'Inuit' (Eskimo)<br />
en 'Uajarneq'.<br />
Tukaq Teatret werd door Reinar Nilsson,<br />
een Noorse emigrant, in 1975 in Denemarken<br />
opgericht. De spelers komen uit<br />
Groenland: Eskimo's, die in Denemarken<br />
studeerden, maar in ook daar aanwezige<br />
westerse patronen hun draai niet konden<br />
vinden.<br />
Het theaterstuk, dat Nilsson samen met<br />
de Eskimo's maakte, bracht een schok<br />
teweeg, zowel bij de Eskimo's als bij<br />
de blanken. Het gaat over het zoeken<br />
naar eigen oorsprong en identiteit,<br />
over de bevrijding van de door vreemde<br />
volkeren opgelegde politieke en sociale<br />
patronen. Het is ook een oproep aan<br />
alle onderdrukte sociale groepen en<br />
volkeren zich te bevrijden.<br />
'INUIT'<br />
Over de vreugde van een oervolk.<br />
Over het terugschrikken voor het beangstigend<br />
geweld van de vreemde blanke<br />
geest.<br />
Over de strijd om de eigen identiteit<br />
weer terug te winnen.<br />
'UAJARNEQ'<br />
Drieduizend jaar oude Groenlandse<br />
maskerkunst, gekombineerd met oude<br />
vruchtbaarheidsrituelen.<br />
Inuit = Eskimo<br />
Tukaq = harpoen.<br />
TEATRET<br />
The TUKAQ THEATRE came into existence<br />
in Denmark in 1975, and during the<br />
four years they have existed they<br />
have made a strong impression.<br />
The theatre is based in Denmark, on<br />
the west coast of Jylland. In a<br />
rugged countryside and with the sea<br />
as their nearest neighbour, the<br />
group has managed to establish a cultural<br />
centre supported by the local<br />
population, who do not normally take<br />
an interest in cultural activities.<br />
Even though the Tukaq Theatre perform<br />
their plays in Greenlandic, and<br />
even though the themes of their plays<br />
are derived from Greenland, the theatre<br />
has been able to break through<br />
linguistic, cultural and social barriers,<br />
and they have captured large<br />
audiences in Denmark who rarely or<br />
never go to the theatre.<br />
The work of the Tukaq Theatre shows<br />
that the search for one's own roots,<br />
a search for the primeval and a liberation<br />
from alienating political and<br />
social systems, is a general issue<br />
among all surpressed social groups<br />
and peoples.<br />
