Theoretical investigation of strongly anisotropic nanomagnets
K.U.Leuven
Fabrication of Three-dimensional Ordered Macroporous Organic Semiconductor Single Crystals and Their Optical
Properties
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: Background
Macroscopic features have traditionally been attained by physical or mechanical methods, but as features on nanoscopic length scales have
become more important, chemical approaches have made significant contributions. To achieve further structural complexity, physical, chemical and
engineering approaches toward materials fabrication must converge. Novel multidisciplinary approaches toward the synthesis of hierarchically
structured, functional materials have been developed. One of such class of materials is three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) solids.
These materials have been developed in parallel in different research communities, including chemists, physicists, and engineers. Colloidal crystals
with 3D periodic and porous structures can be used as templates to direct the formation of 3DOM solids. There are a number of
interestingapplications of 3DOM materials owing to their unique physical and structural properties. Among them, 3DOM structures as the photonic
ERC-2012-StG-307523-LIGHT.
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: Nanoscience and nanotechnology have become crucial in the development of novel materials for catalysis research. In general, in depth
characterizations of catalysts consists of determining the catalysts structure and chemical composition. In stark contrast, insight into the organic
chemical transformations is mostly limited to bulk analysis of reaction mixtures. In order to gain detailed insight into the performance of these highly
dispersed materials novel in situ characterization tools and techniques are required. Optical microscopy can take a prominent place in this research
because of its molecular sensitivity and noninvasiveness. The LIGHT project proposes to develop optical microscopy based tools that enable clearcut
assignments of the overall catalytic activity of a powder to specific molecular sites or nano-scale features within that powder. In order to validate
the proposed techniques important questions in catalysis research will be tackled ranging from acid-base to photocata
The coupling of land use change, soil erosion and carbon balance in China
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: Since the mid of 20th century, China has experienced dramatically land use and landscape pattern changes. Soil erosion has been
identified as an important cause of declining land productivity and a potential threat to food security in China where approximate 37% of land areas
were affected by soil erosion. Meanwhile, Land use change and soil erosion are both affecting vegetation and soil carbon dynamics. So it is pretty
important to make the interrelationship among land use change, soil erosion andcarbon balance in China explicit. However, estimates of both
erosion ,land use dynamics and their interaction are difficult and addressing their effects on carbon budgets at the country scale (including possible
future changes) is therefore also difficult. In order to address this important question, several sub-questions need to be addressed: (1) What is the
current rate of soil erosion in China and how may it have changed through time ? (2) How are carbon dynamics and erosion coupled at the
