"In my work I see the differences between
migrants on a daily basis and I adjust my
counselling accordingly. You must be able to
read a case. Your intuition, knowledge and
experience all play a role in a conversation."
Wanneer en waarom ben je gaan werken bij IOM? "Ik ben geschiedenisleraar
geweest op het havo/vmbo. Later heb ik een tijd als reisleider
gewerkt in diverse landen. Via jeugdwelzijnswerk met alleenstaande minderjarige
asielzoekers ben ik uiteindelijk in 2004 bij IOM terechtgekomen.
IOM is actief binnen verschillende migratiethema's, waarvan terugkeer er
een is. Daar is altijd veel maatschappelijke discussie over; van detentieboten
tot Mauro en van Bed-Bad-Brood tot uitzetting van een Armeense
moeder. Ik vind het een interessant onderwerp. Het is nooit zwart-wit."
Wat maakt dat jij dit werk al zo lang doet? "Het contact met de mensen
zelf is voor mij toch het leukst. Daar haal ik de meeste werkvreugde
uit. Van Filipijnse au pairs tot de snelkookpan van vreemdelingenbewaring,
ik kom telkens weer bijzondere verhalen tegen. En je weet dat je als
IOM een belangrijke rol kan spelen. Van de meer dan tweeduizend terugkeerders
die ik door de jaren heen heb begeleid, hebben we bij een groot
deel echt een verschil kunnen maken. Dat baseer ik op de contacten die
ik soms nog heb nadat mensen zijn teruggekeerd."
When and why did you start working at IOM? "I used to be a history
teacher at high school. Later I worked as a tour guide in various countries.
In 2004 I joined IOM through youth welfare work for unaccompanied
minor asylum seekers. IOM is active in various migration areas, including
return migration. There is always a lot of public and political debate
about this topic; from detention boats to the Mauro case and from Bed-
Bath-Bread discussions to the expulsion of an Armenian mother. I think
it's an interesting topic. It is never black and white."
What drives you to do this work for so long? "For me, being in direct
contact with migrants is the most enjoyable part of my work. From
Filipino au pairs to migrants residing in administrative detention, I always
come across special stories. You know that by working for IOM you can
play an important role. From more than two thousand returnees I have
had in my caseload over the years, for the biggest part we have been
able to make a difference. I know this based on the contact I sometimes
still have with migrants after their return."
