CATEDRAL BASÍLICA
Um pouco de história
Depois da expulsão dos
jesuítas, a igreja do antigo
Colégio da Companhia de
Jesus tornou-se a Catedral
Basílica de Salvador 1 , em
substituição à antiga Sé,
ameaçada de desabamento 2 .
Conta a tradição que os
primeiros jesuítas, que vieram
com o governador-geral Tomé de
Souza em 1549,
estabeleceram-se numa pequena
capela, a de Nossa Senhora da
Ajuda, construída por eles
dentro dos muros da cidade
fortificada. Não demoraram
muito tempo no local, pois
conseguiram a doação de um
pedaço de terra, agora fora dos
muros. Nesse terreno, que
cuidaram de terraplanar,
ergueram uma pequena capela,
que chamaram Terreiro de Jesus.
BASILICA CATHEDRAL
A bit of history
After the Jesuits’ expulsion,
the church of the former
College of the Company of
Jesus became Salvador’s
Basilica Cathedral 1 , replacing
the old Sé that had been
threatening to collapse 2 .
Tradition has it that the
first Jesuits, upon arriving with
Governor-General Tomé de
Souza in 1549, established
themselves in a small chapel,
the Nossa Senhora da Ajuda,
built by them inside the walls
of the fortified town. They did
not stay there long, as they
received a plot of land as
donation, this time outside
the walls. In this land, they
raised a small chapel called
Terreiro de Jesus. They started
to lure Indians to this place,
so they could teach them a
1. Jesuits were banned by the Royal Letter
of August 28 th 1759. In 1765, through the
Royal Provision of October 26 th , the temple
was handed to the Archbishopric, under
Friar D. Manuel de Santa Inês.
2. The old Sé was destroyed in 1933 to
make way for the streetcar tracks, making a
U-turn in what is now the Sé Square. A
whole block of buildings was also destroyed
to make room for progress. The open space
was then called Sé Square, which, in the
words of professor and architect Isaías
Carvalho de Santos Neto: “it became, when
it no longer was”.
