GLOSSÁRIO<br />

Alizar – faixa de azulejos ou mármore<br />

que reveste as paredes até certa altura.<br />

Almas – adultos ou pessoas de<br />

confissão.<br />

Anacoreta – religioso ou penitente<br />

que vive na solidão, em vi<strong>da</strong><br />

contemplativa.<br />

Anjo – enti<strong>da</strong>de representa<strong>da</strong> em<br />

esculturas ou pinturas como figura<br />

ala<strong>da</strong>, em varia<strong>da</strong>s i<strong>da</strong>des, de bebê a<br />

adulto.<br />

Arcaz – designação moderna do<br />

móvel que, a partir do século XVIII,<br />

tornou-se obrigatório nas sacristias.<br />

Na época era chamado caixão, como<br />

os protótipos de cômo<strong>da</strong>s.<br />

Arranque – ornamento colocado no<br />

início do corrimão de uma grande<br />

esca<strong>da</strong>, em geral entalhado em pedra<br />

ou madeira.<br />

Artesãos – em arquitetura designa<br />

ca<strong>da</strong> um dos painéis quadrangulares<br />

ou poligonais, formados por molduras,<br />

que se aplicam na decoração de tetos,<br />

abóba<strong>da</strong>s, voltas de arcos etc. Os<br />

trabalhadores hoje designados<br />

artesãos eram denominados oficiais<br />

mecânicos.<br />

Atlantes – representação de homens<br />

fortes, sustentadores de grande peso.<br />

Bens integrados – complementos <strong>da</strong><br />

estrutura construí<strong>da</strong> dos edifícios<br />

religiosos, como colunas, arcos,<br />

púlpitos, balaustra<strong>da</strong>s, forros, painéis<br />

de azulejos e retábulos. Essa<br />

decoração interna outrora era<br />

chama<strong>da</strong> artes menores ou aplica<strong>da</strong>s.<br />

Bens móveis – bens suscetíveis de<br />

remoção de dentro dos imóveis<br />

considerados patrimônio.<br />

Angel – entity portrayed in sculptures<br />

Bier, grave or catafalque – a<br />

grave-shaped stand where a corpse<br />

was deposited while funeral<br />

ceremonies were performed, before it<br />

was moved to the tomb.<br />

Cabra – mestizo of black and indian<br />

ancestry.<br />

Cabos de festa – individuals usually<br />

chosen from mechanical officials or<br />

craftsmen, in charge of organizing<br />

processions or official celebrations.<br />

They were appointed by the Chamber<br />

Senate.<br />

Caixão – taller and longer than the<br />

box, with four small and two large<br />

drawers, or, as they used to say, “two<br />

full and two divided drawers”. A<br />

prototype of the modern chests of<br />

drawers. It was also used in reference<br />

to the piece of furniture now called<br />

arcaz, or chest, in the sacristies.<br />

Camarín – a hollow above the main<br />

altar where the throne was assembled<br />

for the exhibition of the Holy<br />

Sacrament.<br />

Carcoma – woodworm.<br />

Carver – artist or mechanical official<br />

who did the carvings.<br />

Catafalque – see bier.<br />

Cen<strong>da</strong>l – see loincloth.<br />

Chapter – a meeting of Ecclesiastic<br />

authorities to deal with a certain<br />

subject; a general assembly of<br />

religious men. It also means the place<br />

where such assemblies meet.
