Para o local começaram a atrair
os indígenas, aos quais
pretendiam ensinar um ofício, a
ler, escrever e contar. Esse
encargo civilizatório foi dado ao
irmão Vicente Rodrigues, que,
com seus companheiros,
incumbiu-se do ensino, pregação
e catequese dos índios. Criou-se
assim, em 1550, o Colégio dos
Meninos, que chegou a Colégio
Canônico em 1556.
O padre Manuel da
Nóbrega observava a
importância que esse terreiro,
fora dos muros da cidade,
teria na formatação urbana de
Salvador: “e portanto a todos
nos parece melhor um teso
que está logo além da cerca,
para a parte d’onde se há de
estender a cidade, de maneira
que antes de muitos anos
podemos ficar no meio”. A
antevisão do jesuíta
concretizou-se rapidamente.
Por informação de Simão
de Vasconcelos, o Colégio dos
Jesuítas foi fundado em 1564,
tendo recebido a esmola de D.
Sebastião, através da Provisão
Régia de 7 de novembro
daquele ano. A renda assim
obtida poderia sustentar cerca
de 60 religiosos.
craft, as well as to read, to
write and to count. This
civilizing effort was under
the responsibility of Brother
Vicente Rodrigues, who took
it upon himself, along with his
companions, to teach,
catechize and preach to the
Indians. Thus was created
the College of Boys in 1550,
named a Canonic College
in 1556.
Father Manuel da Nóbrega
had already noted the
importance that this terreiro,
outside the town’s walls,
would have in Salvador’s
urban development: “and
therefore it seems best to all of
us to have a slope just outside
the fences, on the side towards
which the town is bound to
grow, so that we shall be in
the middle after not too many
years”. This Jesuit’s foresight
was quickly materialized.
According to Simão de
Vasconcelos, the Jesuit College
was founded in 1564 with the
alms received from D.
Sebastião, through the Royal
Provision of November 7 th that
same year. The income from
these alms was enough to
support 60 religious men.
