Church and Convent of Santa Teresa
governo provisório da Bahia,
falecido em 1771. Ninguém
menos que o professor de
grego e cronista Luís dos
Santos Vilhena, morto em
1814, ocupa o chão da igreja,
juntamente com sua mulher.
Muitos foram os personagens –
de maior ou menor
importância – sepultados
nesse espaço sob a abóbada
da cúpula, mesmo depois da
interdição de enterro nas
igrejas, no século XIX. Em
homenagem ao criador do
Museu de Arte Sacra e
responsável por sua
restauração, ali reservou-se um
lugar de repouso eterno para o
reitor Edgard do Rego dos
Santos, falecido em 1962. Só
em 1969 seus restos mortais
foram trasladados para o
centro do cruzeiro da igreja,
no início da nave.
As portas laterais da igreja
dão acesso à sacristia através
de duas saletas, uma delas em
azulejos coloridos com
molduras da arcada e lavabo
em pedra de lioz, com três
esguichos. Data do século
XVII. Os azulejos que
recobrem o lavabo, bem como
os das paredes laterais, têm
None other than Greek
professor and chronicle writer
Luís dos Santos Vilhena, dead in
1814, occupies the church’s
floor, along with his wife. A
great number of minor or major
characters were buried in this
space underneath the dome’s
vault, even after burials in
churches were forbidden, in the
19 th century. As a tribute to the
creator of the Museum of
Sacred Art and the one
responsible for its restoration,
an eternal resting place has
been secured for Dean Edgard
do Rego dos Santos, who
passed away in 1962. Only in
1969 would his mortal remains
be transported into the center
of the church’s crossing, in the
beginning of the nave.
The church’s lateral doors
give access to the sacristy
through two small rooms, one
of them covered with colorful
tiles with archway frames and
a lavabo in lioz limestone, with
three spouts. It dates from the
the lavabo, as well as those on
the lateral walls, present a
clearly Arab influence, with
