Ozires Silva, ex-presidente da Embraer, da Varig e da Petrobrás, e ex-ministro de Estado, proferiu uma palestra para os associados da SWISSCAM no dia 20 de fevereiro Current situation: Is economic development possible? by Ozires Silva If we look at Brazil, from any perspective, we have lots to complain about. Although, in historical terms, our country is only eight years younger than the United States, from the general point of view we are obviously behind. The social contrasts which upset us every day show this in a dramatic way. We always find some explanations, saying that our colonization was different; then we assume a position of complete racial inferiority which seems to leave us more acquiescent. However, we should insist on the idea that the development of nations does not depend on the age of the country, its geographical location, its natural resources, its climate, the race of its people nor the commercial or entrepreneurial skills of its businessmen. There are many examples to support this stance, such as the United States, Canada, the countries of Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and, more recently, Korea and China. These places have different people, are in different regions, have different races but have all come together in a certain way on the road to progress. What then would really be the factors which boost the development of human societies? I believe that the stem from the attitude of people formed by the educational and cultural systems of societies, based on principles such as: - The fundamental importance of ethics - Permanent integrity - Assuming responsibility for every action - Respect for the law and the cultural habits of society - Respect for citizens` rights - Pride in constructive work - Making efforts to save money and invest - Will to win and dedication to finding solutions - Punctuality - Efficiency and productivity Every citizen should affect be driven by these obligations. Above all, it is important that the government commits itself to them since, for years, it has seemed that the government felt it was exempt from these obligations. Nature, through its stability, understands and practices this every day, allowing human beings on Earth to make long-term plans for their lives. We made many mistakes in the past and the price paid has been brutal for most of our population. The driving idea should be: we will change, and quickly in order to survive decently as a nation and a people. The new is knocking loudly at our doors. Our children and grandchildren will not forgive us if we continue to take the same steps in the years to come which we took in the past. Ozires Silva, the ex-president of Embraer, Varig and Petrobras, and a former government minister, gave this speech to SWISSCAM members on February 20 26 swisscam nº33 05/2003
