ESTRUTURAS ARQUITECTÓNICAS PARA O COMPLEXO PALEONTOLÓGICO DE PENHA GARCIARicardo Farinha > Arquitecto. farinha.ricardo@hotmail.comABSTRACTPenha Garcia, urban space of medieval origins that brings together ethnographic livings that shows thegeological and geographic interests of the place. In spite of the rough relief, Penha Garcia territory showsa whole group of conditions that brought Man to settle here taking part of the relation with the river andthe mountain. Penha Garcia is defined as a territory where a lot of conditions cross and perpetuate itsimportance in the history, that's why its status of medieval village placed in the extreme top south of theSerra do Ramiro, where it can be seen Monsanto and all planes around the right bank of Ponsul river atwest, as well as the top of the other side of the valley through east, and with access to an excellent sourceof potable water as well as to a great watermill energy. These facts justify the past defensive and economicimportance, but today this is not enough for many.Today, the memory is the strength of the place; it has impressed a feeling in the old steeped streets, madeof hard stone and with an irregular design used to climb a little more; it's the water-woks-mills in the bottomof the valley that shows so well that the humanization of a place can be so wealthy, like if they alwaysbeen there. The trace fossils found in the stones, carved a long time ago by lost species and the damwaters that shows us the rich natural landscape. One more time the morphology of the place and his geologicalhistory gives it an incredible interest.The Paleozoic National Museum serves as structural and pedagogical base to the Paleontological Complexof Penha Garcia, where the public will be invited to make a 400 million years trip to the Proterozoic-Paleozioc eras. The museum should be placed out of the Penha Garcia core center, close to the nationalroad. The proposal intents to place it in Coito de Cima, between the actual industrial state and the referredhabitation center, promoting a public space while the character of being. We also propose this museum asa new break point to the actual fossil route, ending probably in the Interpretation Center of theIchnological Park of Penha Garcia.The Museum will be the representation of the Paleozoic chronostratigraphic chart, inside and outside,bringing the public to walk the time path starting in the origin of the Earth (outside), passing through themuseum where it will be retract the Paleozoic, and it will end outside with a representation of the geologicalpredictable future. The internal path begins in the reception hall where it can take place occasionalexhibitions and where should exists a merchandising shop, with regional and allusive souvenirs. In thisspace will be the accesses to the resident exibition and to the auditory.The resident exhibition is made of 7 spaces divided by sheets, witch one representing a Paleozoic Period(excluding the first one, that will be the introduction to the other ones), in each displaying an exhibition ofnational and international fossils that typify the most important ecosystems of each Period, as well as theinformation about major geological and biological processes and episodes in the whole planet and morespecific in Portugal, using panels, model reproductions and a documentary video. The museum will havealso a scientific core that will include a laboratory for the preparation off samples, an archive and probablya small library.Taking on consideration the need to support the understanding of the pedonal path of the IchnologicalPark, was planned the creation of a space where the visitants understand how this prints of the pastoccurred, and how the earth have evolved the way that this prints turn out here, as well as how this specieslived.70The proposal of the place for the Interpretation Centre is based on an idea that the bank of the lagoondam could be used to develop the tourism and not just to the Interpretation Center of the Park, but aswell as a privileged place to the practice of non motorized nautical sports like canoeing, dive or the prac-
