HM King Juan Carlos Trophy 2023
An emblematic event of Clube Naval
de Cascais, the HM King Juan
Carlos Trophy, also known as the “King’s
Trophy”, was established in 1995, when
His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain
offered Clube Naval de Cascais a trophy, in
order to honour the place where he learned
to sail and compete. In 2022, the King’s
Trophy was disputed in the 6M class, due
to the European Championship of the
class being held in Cascais, but in 2023,
in its 28th edition, it returned to its most
traditional format - or, at least, the one in
which it was most often disputed - and had
as its main protagonists the Dragon class
boats, that thus returned to competition
in Cascais waters.
The three days in mid-April were filled
with a very full programme, both in sporting
terms, with seven regattas held, and
in social terms, confirming the reputation
of CNCascais in terms of organisation,
in a championship that had the support
of Turismo de Portugal, Visit Cascais,
Cascais Town Council, the Portuguese
Sailing Federation, Cascais Marina and
Vista Alegre. And received an environmental
certification from Sailors for the
Sea, which awarded the event the “gold”
certificate, the second highest ranking
of this reputable non-governmental organisation.
On the water, the eight crews, representing
five different nationalities (Germany,
Australia, Belgium, Ireland and Portugal)
could enjoy excellent conditions for sailing
throughout the competition, with clear
skies and sun shining. In fact, on the first
two days, there were even the famous
