KULLABERG - A FUTURE WINE DISTRICT
Growing wine on Sweden's cold latitudes is a real challenge, but the Sea and the
surroundings of Kullaberg gives us the best conditions.
T
oday, most of Sweden's wine is at
Kullaberg. Maybe it's because there are
more crazy people here than in the rest
of the country, but that is not the whole truth.
The landscape itself is a very important factor.
Even the ancient Romans knew they needed
slopes to grow wine on cooler latitudes. The
reason is that the frost follow along the mountain
side, with the cultivation, down to the valley.
Frost is one of the worst threats of a winemaker
when the buds broken. By budbreak flower clusters
appear, and if they are damaged by late frost
it will be another three weeks before new, significant
buds appear. We do not have margins here
in the north, which would mean that our grapes
would not have enough time to mature.
The deep sea around us makes spring cold at
Kullaberg and it prevents the buds to break
too early. So when the buds break, the risk of
spring frost is minimal. Nevertheless, if the
temperature were to drop below zero after
budbreak, we are situated on a hill and the frost
would run past the vines without damage. It is
not rare to see frost on the cars in Höganäs but
not on Kullaberg.
Throughout the summer, warmth is stored
in the ocean around us and throughout the
autumn, the sea provides us with warmth.
Sometime to a degree that some of our amazing
harvest workers work in shorts in October!
We also have good access to water so irrigation
is only needed on a very dry summer for new
planted vines. Solaris is the grape that all Kullaberg
winemakers chose and it is exceptional as
it matures well even during a worse year, but of
course it gives less harvest.
Kullaberg is also a well-known tourist destination
and it is of course an advantage for us winemakers
- Kullaberg has the quiet and peaceful
beauty that wine regions usually have!
Many wine regions around the world are beautiful
holiday destinations where winemakers can
sell their products to both tourists passing by
and locals. Therefore, we hope (of course), that
in the near future, we will be allowed to sell our
wine here on the farm.
We are far from the only crazy people at Kullaberg.
In our area there are plenty of ideas, people
living here are happy to benefit from local initiatives
and the municipality is very supportive of
new initiatives.
We "Kullabor" are proud of our region!
