First,the trader community has a regulationregarding a limit on the number ofsimilar goods that can be sold. ‘Commongoods’, such as clothes, are limitedto five traders, while ‘rare goods’, suchas traditional medicine, are limitedto three traders. Second, traders withsimilar goods are strongly suggestednot to form their space in adjacent positions.There is usually a gap of aroundtwo or three traders between traders ofsimilar goods.ATs do not own a specific spatialposition in the courtyard, so they needto search for an ‘empty position’ everytime they want to form their space.There are two types of empty positionin the courtyard. First, one that is notowned by any PT. Second, the positionis empty because the PT who owns itis absent. When the AT finds an emptyposition, they cannot directly occupyit, but need to ask for permission fromthe PTs in the area surrounding theempty position.The first capacity is closely related tothe other two. When traders are able tooccupy a position inside the courtyard,then they are also allowed to bring(and utilize) various objects as resourcesto form a certain set of relations-interactionsthat are required to form thetrader space.5.2. Spatial assemblage: Theimportance of everyday items andthe idea of the spatial roleThis study argues that the ephemeralityof architectural space is affectedby the heterogeneity of its components.The findings show that there iswide range of entities that are involvedas components that form the traderspace, including everyday items suchas clothes, socks, plastic rugs and umbrellas.The availability of these everydayitems plays an important role inthe ephemerality of the trader space.This importance is based on two factors.First, the traders have limited timeto actualize their capacities, specificallythose that allowed them to bringand utilize these everyday items in thecourtyard. Second, the traders can easilymove or mobilize these items to anotherlocation, even though the varietyand number of these can increase thedifficulty of this process.However, the importance of theseeveryday items does not reside in theitems themselves; instead, it should beseen through their spatial role whenthey form a relation-interaction withother entities. Based on the concept ofcapacities from assemblage theory, thisstudy develops the idea of the spatialrole to fully explain the relation-interactionbetween the components ofspatial assemblage. This role can bedivided into three parts: the role itself,the function of the role, and the actualrealization of the role.The idea was developed to demonstratesthe variety of entities that actas components of architectural space.Different entities can act as componentswith the same spatial role, eventhough the realization of the role is different(which also affects the qualitiesprovided by the entities). For example,in trader space, there is a componentwith a spatial role as a ‘boundary’. Thefunction of a ‘boundary’ in traderspace is to mark out the courtyard areathat can be used by traders, especiallyto display their goods. In Case 1 (men’sclothes trader), the entity that acts asa ‘boundary’ is a plastic rug, whichactualizes the role by directly coveringthe surface of the courtyard floor. InCase 2 (sock trader), beside a plasticrug, the entity which also does this isan umbrella, which actualizes the roleby forming a shaded area that indirectlycovers the courtyard floor. The plasticrug and umbrella therefore play thesame spatial role (as a boundary), eventhough the properties of each lead todifferent actualizations of the role. Thespatial role is also specifically relatedto the components involved in the (de)territorialization phase, which is whenthe architectural space appears and disappears(the phase will be explained inthe following section).
