foreign students representing key oil producing regions of
the world.
Hosting the Stanford side was Professor Anthony
Kovscek, head of the Energy Resources Engineering faculty
at Stanford. Kovscek described petroleum engineering education
in the U.S. and lead the delegation through Stanford
laboratories where the PhD researchers demonstrated
their research projects to the group.
While in the Silicon Valley area we visited with Applied
Physics and toured their manufacturing facility for MWD
systems, MWD sensors, magnetometers and other products
that are sold into the Russian and Chinese markets as well
as North America. Applications of Applied Physics unique
systems include air drilling, underbalanced drilling, high
speed drilling, low pressure formations with high lost
circulation material (LCM) situations, drilling in difficult
areas, and in high temperature drilling applications for oil,
gas, and geothermal.
After a few photo ops at Google and Apple headquarters
(it’s what you do in Silicon Valley, isn’t it?) we then
headed by bus to Bakersfield, the oil capital of California
which itself is the fourth largest producing state in the U.S.,
after Alaska, Texas and Louisiana.
Bakersfield is literally surrounded by a moonscape of
oil and gas operations much like those surrounding Baku
in Azerbaijan. Chevron today is the primary producer in the
Bakersfield – Kern River area, which itself is a part of the
San Joaquin Basin, California’s largest oil bearing region.
Though the environment is desert, the San Joaquin
Basin is relevant to any West Siberian oilman. The Bakersfield
area fields that are currently in production were discovered
in the 1970s and so – as mature fields in production for 40
Aera Energy
