LATEST NEWS AND RESEARCH
FLU VACCINE
CUTS HEART
FAILURE
RISK FOR
DIABETICS
New research has discovered
that flu vaccination may reduce
the likelihood of Type 2 diabetics
being hospitalized with stroke or
heart failure. The research showed
that patients who received the flu
vaccine had a 24% lower death rate
compared to patients who had not
received it. “This study suggests
the vaccine may have substantial
benefits for patients with long-term
conditions. Not only might it help
reduce serious illness such as stroke,
and possibly heart attack, in high
risk individuals, it may also reduce
the risk of death in the flu season,”
explains study lead author Eszter
Vamos from Imperial College
London. Type 2 diabetes goes hand
in hand with uncontrolled blood
sugar levels; these cause high blood
pressure, putting patients at high risk
of cardiovascular disease.
The study examined 124,503
British adults with Type 2 diabetes
between 2003 and 2010. Around
65% of these patients received the
flu vaccine. The research team
found that in patients who
were vaccinated there
were 30% fewer hospital
admission and 15%
fewer admissions
for influenza or
pneumonia.
SAFER GREENER
FOOD PACKAGING
Plastic is used in almost all food packaging. And it harms your health. This fact makes a
new invention by Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers of 2016 particularly important.
Professor Fariba Dehghani, of the University of Sydney, and Director of ARC Food
Processing Training Center, has invented a new technology that is a ‘greener’ approach
to food packaging. Advanced Active Food Packaging prolongs food’s shelf life by
allowing less oxygen and water-vapor from penetrating the polymer used to package
food. While some polymers may be biodegradable, they also contain harmful toxins,
like polypropylene carbonate. By removing the impurities from plastic food packaging
Prof. Dehghani obtained a naturally antibacterial surface. Good news for the health
conscious—let’s hope this new greener plastic makes it to our shelves soon!
INCREASED RISK OF
MENTAL ILLNESS FOR
DIABETIC TEENAGERS
Being a teenager and trying to figure out where you fit in and belong is already
hard enough, without the added stress of a medical condition that sets you apart
from the rest. A recent study has shown that young people with diabetes are four
times more likely to be hospitalized for mental health treatment than those without
the disease. “Depression is two to three times more common among young people
with diabetes than those that don’t have the disease”, says Tina Drossos, a clinical
psychologist at the University of Chicago Medicine.
Managing the disease is tough at any age, but teenagers may find it particularly
challenging to constantly test their blood, monitor their carbohydrates and manage
their insulin levels. These tasks get in the way of normal teenage life, and this can
turn into mental issues like anxiety and depression.
“It was definitely not something that we were expecting,” says Amanda Frost, a
senior researcher at HCCI, who worked on the study. “HCCI researchers will
examine the trend more closely in future work.”
HEALTH IN QATAR
A NEW WAY
TO
TEST FOR
DIABETES
Diabetes is a leading cause of death all over the world. It has become an economical
and social challenge, of grave concern to many countries. Last year, more than 25% of
the state’s health budget was spent on diabetes and its complications. More than 50%
of people with diabetes don’t know they have it. Although more and more awareness
campaigns attempt to reduce that number, people are still reluctant to get tested for
fear they might find out that they have this chronic disease.
4
HEALTH AND LIFE
Prof. Abdul Badi Abou Samra and Pro. Karsten Suhre.
The most common way to test for
diabetes is pricking your finger
and testing the blood drops
on a glucometer. Another way
involves complex tear testing.
But what if there was another,
quicker way of checking blood sugar levels?
A local research team is in the early stages of
developing a new method for testing diabetes
that involves checking for biomarker levels in
saliva. To mark World Diabetes Day, we interviewed
Professor Abdul Badi Abou Samra,
Chairman of the Department of Medicine
and Senior Consultant in Endocrinology and
Diabetes, to find out more.
Previous studies conducted at Weill Cornell
Medical College in Qatar show that saliva
contains chemicals that can reflect the body’s
glucose levels. In order to move this finding
one step closer to clinical application, the
research team from Hamad Medical Corporation
collaborated with Weill Cornell Medical
College in Qatar and its professors to further
explore these studies.
One of the chemicals that can indicate blood
sugar levels is called 1,5-anhdroglucitol or
short 15AG, which, according to Prof. Abou
Samra, has the same composition similar to
sugar itself and also to another molecule called
galactose.
What is 15AG?
15AG enters the body through nutrition and
then is eliminated. According to Professor of
Physiology and Biophysics and Director of
Bioinformatics Core at Weill Cornell Medical
College in Qatar, Dr. Karsten Suhre,
“As a diabetic, your kidneys are overloaded
with sugar since there’s too much sugar in
the blood, in this situation, the kidney will
eliminate the 15AG molecule faster as it tries
to keep the sugar in the body. The result of this
faster loss of 15AG is a measure of the average
glucose levels of the patient over a week's time
or so. So, that patient's blood levels for the
week can be monitored that way.”
This process is known to occur in blood.
However, what was new in their research
was that chemicals in saliva actually mirror
those in the bloodstream. “When you look at
the saliva levels and the blood levels of sugar,
for 15AG they mirror each other, showing you
a way to measure it in a non-invavsive way
without the need to draw blood” said Prof.
Abou Samra.
The molecule 15AG remains in the body
for about 1-2 weeks. According to Prof. Abou
Samra, the body is unable to use the molecule
or metabolize it. The higher the glucose in the
blood, the lower the levels of 15AG.
15AG is not only used to test for diabetes or
sugar levels. Researchers and students are also
using this molecule to predict cardiovascular
diseases.
Tests and Research
The initial study started in 2012, together
with a study conducted with the Dermatology
Department under Dr. Mohammed M. El-Din
Selim. A total of 400 voluntary participants
took part, both diabetic and non-diabetic, from
different ethnicities, mainly Arabs, Indians,
and filipinos from all age groups.
According to the research team, some of the
results were unclear due to the presence of an
additional molecule that destroys and overshadows
15AG’s signal. In their first challenge
the team found a negative coloration between
the blood and saliva tests, however, they now
know they needed to eliminate the additional
molecule to be able to measure sugar levels
in saliva. Many devices and research tools
are needed to carry out this test. “We want
to bring this test to the public, but we are not
there yet,” said Prof. Abou Samra. However,
the researchers are using chemical analyzers
to measure other important chemicals. “These
chemical analyzers are fairly inexpensive
and can show the development of the method
of testing if we find a way to get rid of the
overshadowing chemical,” added Dr. Suhre. “A
system developed in Japan and the U.S. called
15AG glycomark can also be useful in testing
saliva after certain chemicals are eliminated.”
5
Approvals and Standards
Qatar uses American-European standards in
the medical field. “To get the saliva test to the
public requires first to get rid of the galactose
and then to measure the 15AG. Once that is
published and approved by the authorities,
then we can implement the test, develop it and
sell it internationally,” said Professor Abou
Samra.
Many diabetes tests have taken a long time
to develop, like the finger prick test, which
was only developed recently. Prior to that,
blood samples were taken to labs for testing, as
well as hemoglobin A1C. “We think we can do
the same with the saliva test,” said Prof. Abou
Samra.
What are the Benefits of Saliva Testing?
The saliva test will be a portable device, easy to
carry to the malls or events. Unlike blood tests,
it will not be messy, and will not require the
patient to be fasting, which will lead to more
“I am very happy that we collaborated Cornell Medical Collage and Qatar Foundation,
with Hamad Medical Corporation and Professor Abou Samra, because if
we did not, we would not have gotten to this stage. I think we’ve created strong
collaborative work. It all depends on the interest in the test, and how much time,
effort, and money goes into this that makes it all worth it.”
– Professor Karsten Suhre.
people testing their sugar levels this way. Just a
swipe of your saliva and you’re ready to go.
The research team aims to get more partners
and researchers interested in helping to develop
this test and collaborate with organizations
that will provide some insight or techniques to
eliminate the chemicals overshadowing 15AG.
The research is being funded in great part by
the State. However, to create a final product,
more partners and collaborators must pitch in.
Dr. Suhre added that there are misconceptions
about the value of patented research and
that if possible they will try their best to patent
some aspect of the research to bring more
attention and collaboration to this important
issue.
The research is still ongoing. Could 2017
bring a new, easy diabetes test?

Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani,
Minister of Public Health HE Dr.
Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari and
Chairman of Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) HE
Sheikh Dr. Khalid bin Jabor al Thani attended
the Breast Cancer Conference, themed
"present standards and new perspectives," in
Doha on 28-29 October.
Sheikh Dr. Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani
stressed the importance dealing with the
pressing issue of breast cancer. He urged
everyone to get the best out of the conference,
pointing out that nowadays the disease is
prevalent in much younger people. Incidences
of breast cancer among young women is
considerably high in Qatar and the region
compared to the West.
"QCS is doing its best to achieve its goals,
which include raising awareness of cancer
and prevention methods as well as extending
financial support to patients who are unable to
afford treatment expenses."
The conference stressed the importance
of empowering the community in Qatar with
information about early detection of breast
cancer from young age.
The importance of encouraging the
country’s healthcare organizations to
collaborate with QCS to promote breast cancer
awareness was highlighted. This in turn will
improve the healthcare and quality of life of
breast cancer patients.
The Breast Cancer Conference also
stressed the role of the country’s corporate
organizations to be socially responsible and
the need for them to partner with QCS to
spread awareness of breast cancer.
Dr Abdul Azim Abdul Wahab, Vice
President of QCS, said, "This conference will
address some of the new rules in the treatment
of breast cancer through exchange of expertise
and experience."
The conference brought together over
3,000 speakers and top experts in the field
of breast cancer from Qatar, GCC countries,
Austria, Canada, USA and Egypt, in addition
to a number of stakeholders from Qatar,
notably the Ministry of Public Health, Hamad
Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health
Care Foundation and the National Center for
Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR).
“This activity is a Category 1 - Accredited
Group Learning Activity as defined by the
Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners
Accreditation Department and is approved for
a maximum of 7.25 hours.”
“Accompanying the Breast Cancer
7
Conference, there will be a specialized
healthcare exhibition which is an important
opportunity for the healthcare industry
companies to keep the attendees abreast of
latest innovations in the field of breast cancer
care, under one roof and at international level.”
“The conference is a unique accredited
continuous professional development
opportunity for healthcare providers in the
field of breast cancer at the local, regional
and international levels. It will serve a great
chance to exchange knowledge with top
international experts and familiarize yourself
with the latest medical technologies in the
field of breast cancer.”
On the second day, there were a number
of lectures and workshops, including one on
male breast cancer, presented by Dr. Hadi
Oborshid, health educator at QCS. According
to National Cancer Strategy statistics male
breast cancer accounts for about 3% of breast
cancer cases in Qatar.
The workshop also highlighted the role
of men in supporting women both for early
detection and during treatment. It was noted
that one of the barriers in early detection in
Qatar is the rejection by men. According to
Rahaf Wasfi, health educator at QCS, raising
awareness among men about early detection
would help women with the process.

THE
Burden of
DIABETES
DIABETES LEADERSHIP FORUM, QATAR
Right this second, there are over 200,000 people in Qatar suffering from a condition that
wrecks quality of life, damages the body, and can even prove fatal: Type 2 diabetes. More
worrying still, this number is set to nearly double within 40 years. The Diabetes Leadership
Forum in Qatar took place on 26 and 27 September 2016 and looked at the burden this
modern disease places on the economy, society, and individuals themselves, both globally and
at a local level. With diabetes on the increase, the financial and personal costs are spiraling out
of control. What can be done to curb the rise of this fatal, yet preventable, disease?
Global Impact of Diabetes
The World Bank’s Practice Manager for the Middle East and
North Africa, Dr. Ernest Massiah, gave a harrowing review
of the global health situation. Worldwide, the burden of
disease has shifted drastically in the last twenty years from
communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases
(NCD’s), such as diabetes and cancer. This is no longer a
problem affecting only rich countries; low-income countries
have joined in on the trend. In fact, the $1.7 trillion global spend
on NCD’s is equally shared; $900 billion are spent in high
income countries, $800 billion in poorer nations.
Diabetes in the Gulf Region
Director of the Diabetes Center in King Saud University in
Saudi Arabia, Dr. Khalid Al Rubeaan, honed in on the dramatic
increase in diabetic patients in the Gulf region. Reminiscing
on his days as a medical student in 1977, he recalled that
diabetes affected only 2% of the population in Saudi Arabia.
Nowadays, the figure is close to 25%. The trend is typical of
other countries in the area. In fact, Saudi Arabia, followed by
Kuwait and Qatar, are in the top ten countries worldwide with
the highest diabetes statistics.
Cost and Social Impact
More than one factor contributes to the cost of diabetes. Hospital stays, outpatient
programs, and pharmaceutical drugs are expensive. What’s more, diabetes is often
not an isolated condition. Most diabetics will also experience at least one other
health condition as a direct consequence, further impacting quality of life and costing
thousands per capita to treat. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of cardiovascular
disease, liver failure and blindness. This cocktail of complications sends the healthcare
bill shooting to the stars, and puts an extraordinary pressure on medical infrastructure in
the Gulf region.
But the cost is also shouldered by diabetics themselves. They are more likely to take time
off work, and to be less productive. Reports indicate that diabetics are also less likely to
be hired. The time and money needed for transport, medicine, visits to care centers all
add to the financial burden of working fewer hours. This puts an incredible amount of
stress on diabetics and their families. Relatives may need to reduce their working hours
to care for them. It’s a cascade of social and economic costs, felt at all levels.
Risk Factors
The most striking factor in diabetes risk
is obesity. And obesity is also rising at an
unacceptable rate. Nearly 30% of children
are obese—most of them will grow up to be
adults with poor quality of life and severe
health problems, further increasing the
pressure on health budgets. While there
may be some genetic factors involved in
obesity, diet, exercise and social habits
play the major part. Smoking is still very
prevalent. Calorie intakes are at an alltime
high and rising steadily, while physical
activity levels are at rock bottom. If nothing
is done, forecasts estimate that by 2050,
one in two people in Qatar will be diabetic.
Prevention Strategies
Dr. Al Rubeaan, who lost a colleague
to diabetes last week, stated that
while there are some initiatives,
more needs to be done to tackle
the growing problem in the area.
The health system is free, but
quality has some way to go to meet
proper standard. The problem is
infrastructure—there simply aren’t
enough medical staff to cope with
the increasing number of people
with diabetes. “73% of diabetic
patients haven’t had an eye check in
10 years.” Things need to improve,
and the focus has to change
from diabetes management and
treatment, to preventative measures.
Dr. Al Rubeaan stated strongly
that the priority should be given
to primary prevention strategies—
education, awareness, and helping
people understand how to protect
themselves from this disease.
“Spending QR1 on prevention saves
Qatar National Diabetes Strategy
Professor Abou Samra spoke of plans for the implementation of the Qatar National
Diabetes Strategy, a program to raise awareness of diabetes and empower
individuals to adopt healthier lifestyle habits to manage their condition. The
plans include a national screening program, set to launch in 2018, to identify all
undiagnosed diabetics and pre-diabetics. People who are not aware they have the
condition will be directed to the right care center and will be given tools for self-care,
thereby preventing further health complications. The successful implementation
of the national diabetes strategy would have a positive impact on two levels. On an
economic level, these prevention strategies could slow the spiraling cost, and reduce
the projected healthcare bill from $8.4 billion annually to $6.6 billion—a step in the
right direction. On an individual level, the program would result in better quality of
life and improved health, as well as a more productive workforce.
HEALTH AND LIFE
Diabetes in Qatar
The situation in Qatar is concerning. One in six people has diabetes,
one in five is pre-diabetic. Most people, 80%, have a poor diet; 60%
have a family history of diabetes. As the population ages, more and
more will develop the condition. According to Professor Abdul Badi
Abou Samra, Chairman of Internal Medicine at Hamad Medical
Corporation, Director of Qatar Metabolic Institute and Co-chair of
Qatar National Diabetes Committee, if no action is taken, the number
of Qatari nationals with diabetes will quadruple in the next 40 years,
and the costs will see a similar rise. In fact, estimates indicate that by
2050, Qatar will spend $130 billion on the treatment of diabetes and
its related complications.
Most of this will be spent on pharmaceutical medicines and treating
on-set diabetes, rather than prevention strategies. And yet prevention
strategies are vital to put a stop to the current trend and to prevent a
future where half the population is sick and in need of medical care.
Prevention is Better than Cure
The world is suffering a diabetes epidemic. Unchecked, unrestrained, this disease could end up affecting over half the population and
costing trillions in healthcare costs and lost productivity. The current treatment model is failing to address the reasons why increasing
amounts of people are succumbing to diabetes. More needs to be done, in terms of education, changing social, dietary and exercise
habits, designing urban spaces that encourage healthier lifestyles and tackling the food industry. Only with a prevention strategy that
encompasses all these factors, will we be able to beat diabetes.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
A REVOLUTIONARY
BEAUTY TREND?
Beauty trends come and go but there are some that are here to
stay—the ones that do, need to be special. Every now and then a
revolutionary new treatment pops up and drives the whole world
crazy. Laser hair removal might have been around a while, but
we’ve discovered a new and exciting side effect speaking to top
Qatar dermatologist Dr. Hassan Al-Abdulla.
12
HEALTH AND LIFE
Many people get
laser hair removal
because they
believe they have
excess hair, or they
simply want to avoid
having to go through
painful waxing and
trimming every
other day. What they
don’t know is that
the treatment has
an extra benefit to
simply saving time
on their self care
routine.
Hair growth therapy is applied to the scalp only. This laser
treatment stimulates the growth of follicles and can be
used for any kind of hair loss. However, before starting
treatments, the doctor or specialist needs to figure out what
has caused the hair to fall out so that they can stimulate the
hair correctly. Some conditions are caused by diseases, so
along with the laser treatment, other treatments need to
be provided—either topical, or oral. The laser used for hair
growth is called the diode laser.
Excess hair can be triggered by a disease or illness, which
causes hormonal disturbance. This happens mostly in
women. Illnesses vary, and can involve many factors including
ovaries (polycystic ovarian syndrome), the adrenal glands,
excessive hormone secretion, medication, or even cancer. Dr.
Al-Abdulla explains, “When we see excessive hair growth,
we try to find out whether or not a disease is causing it. If it is
a disease, then we treat it. If not, we concentrate on the hair
only.” The laser is used to kill the hair follicles. Disease or no
disease, once the hair follicles are dead, hair will never grow
again in that area.
The laser is chosen based on the skin type and hair type: the
color, the texture, and the pigment of the skin. Diode is the
most commonly used among all skin types. Laser treatments
to remove hair have no age limit according to Dr. Al-Abdulla,
“We can use it on an infant or an adult.”
Stimulating
Hair
Growth
Removing
Unwanted
Hair
There are three
types of lasers used
for hair removal:
Alexandrite
wave length
755
nanometers
Ya g
wave length
1064
nanometers
Diode
wave length
810
nanometers
Laser hair removal is permanent because it kills the hair follicles.
However, according to Dr. Al-Abdulla, sometimes follicles are missed;
this happens for two reasons: the laser is absorbed by the hair rather
than the follicle; the patient doesn’t follow advice when it comes to
preparing for the treatment or aftercare. The treatment can be more or
less successful depending on the stage of the hair’s life cycle:
Anagen is
the active
growing
phase.
Catagen is
the transition
phase, when
the hair starts
becoming
weaker at the
roots.
Telogen is the
resting stage,
where the
hair begins to
break from
environmental
and dermatological
factors.
The hair
falls; it is
then back to
the Anagen
phase.
Treatment professionals advise the patient to shave or wax before
coming in for treatment. Five days after shaving or waxing is the perfect
time. “For the best and most permanent results, the laser must focus on
the follicles at the Anagen phase and kill them. Instead of just shaving
the hair and then leaving it to grow again,” said Dr. Al-Abdulla. “The
other issue with laser is proper treatments can be costly.”
BEAUTY
Popular hair
treatments
include
hair growth
therapy,
hair removal,
and skin
rejuvenation.
What about those Side Effects?
In answer to the burning question of side effects, Dr. Al-Abdulla
stated it was important first to understand how lasers functions.
“Everyone thinks of laser as a ray, and
most importantly are afraid because
of the word “x-ray”, which is said to
cause cancer, harm cells, and cause
congenital abnormalities to unborn
babies. You can explain this with simple
physics. Light interacts with matter,
when the wave lengths are short, this
means there are high energy sources,
which are dangerous. It is dangerous
because when it is absorbed, it affects
the electrons in the atoms that make up
the body. When the energy is high, the
electrons move and activate the cell.
However, when the wave length is
long, energy level is very weak. We use
long wave lasers for treatments and
even a pregnant lady can have laser
treatment on her abdomen. However,
the treatment is not completely risk
free. Known side effects include
pigmentation, slight burns, and hair
growing back in some areas. But if it’s
performed properly, these side effects
are minimal and temporary.”
But you might be getting some added
benefits to silky smooth skin and the
carefree feeling of never having to shave
or wax ever again. According to
Dr. Al-Abdulla, the laser actually
rejuvenates the skin while killing the
follicles. It makes the skin look younger
and delays the signs of aging.
“Our skin has cells called fibroblasts.
These cells are responsible for the
secretion of three important things:
01
02
03
Elastin—manufactures
elastin fibers offering
elasticity and support
to the skin
Collagen—the
support layer boosting
the elastin, keeping
the skin in its place
Hyaluronic
acid—keeps skin
moist (also called
glycosaminoglycan)
Fibroblast can be stimulated by heat, and
can handle up to 65 degrees centigrade.
The heat from the laser stimulates the
fibroblast. Heat accumulates inside
the layers of the skin and promotes the
secretion of the elastin, collagen, and
hyaluronic acid, making skin firmer
and younger-looking. This technology
is called non-epilated operation of
rejuvenation, meaning it works without
peeling the skin.”
In a world where we increasingly want to multi-task, one thing’s
for sure—this beauty trend is in it for the long haul.
Disclaimer:
These accounts are the opinion of one dermatologist only. Results vary based
on many factors. We advise that you get more than one expert opinion before deciding
whether laser hair removal is right for you.
VIOLENCE IN MEDIA
and
CHILD BEHAVIOR
By Rawa Alagha
Millennials grew up collecting and exchanging Pokémon stickers. Now they fight
in the battlefield to capture them and win the game. Where once scary movies
were shown late at night and television was a handful of channels, now violent films
are available on all devices, on demand, 24/7. Where once the gore was made of
ketchup, now HD and special effects provide super-realistic horror and bloodshed.
How does the increase in available media violence affect children?
16
HEALTH AND LIFE
Imitating Aggression
We are surrounded by screens –
televisions, smartphones, tablets, laptops,
computers, virtual reality head sets. No
wonder our children have access to
more violent media than ever before.
Psychologists define media violence as
visual portrayals of aggression by one
human, animal or supernatural creature
against another. This sounds not just
like many films, but also many children’s
programmes and video games. In 1963,
social learning researchers studied the
effect of witnessing violence on child
behavior. They found that 88% of children
will imitate an aggressive display they
witness passively (for example, on a tv
screen), either by copying the aggressor
or the victim. Modern research keeps
reaffirming this result. Alarm bells should
be ringing.
A report published in Psychiatric Times
in 2012 finds that violence doesn't only
affect behavior; it extends to cognition
and affection. Cognition is like the
foundation on which the bricks of affection
and behavior are built up to shape one’s
character. Your child’s psyche is a bit like
play-dough, it models itself according to
its environment. We all want the best for
our children. We need to be careful what
they are watching and how long they
spend looking at media. But it isn’t just
about the hours; it's the type of content
they consume. A study published in 2000
at the Journal of American Medical
Association concluded that every G-rated
movie contained at least one violent act.
Scary! So, how can you make sure that
your child’s media diet is healthy?
A Healthier Media Diet
Screen is to the brain what food is to the body. You need to be picky
what you give it. Choose media that improves and supports your wellbeing,
and your children’s. Here are two useful tips that will help you
clean up your media diet—one preventive; the other corrective.
Talk to Your Children
It’s very important that parents and
educators talk to children about the side
effects of violence and explain to them
how harmful it can be if they copy these
acts. Using simple language, tell them
how a character suffers from pain, how
the villain has hurt himself, or how the
act has turned out to be destructive for
everyone. By doing this, you can also
help your child understand that this is a
fictional story that should not be imitated
or applied to real life. Be mindful of the
type of media you watch when your
child is around. They will follow your
example, so choose healthier media
like informational documentaries and
educational programmes. Swap video
game time for family time, go for a walk,
cook a meal together, dig out those old
board games.
Soothe those Media Memories
What if your child gets up at night
crying? They can’t sleep because of a
scary programme they watched earlier.
Here’s a tip to soothe them back to
sleep. First, be understanding and open.
Allow them to tell you everything, be
as descriptive as possible: the colors
they see, the smell and the roars of the
monster that lurks in the dark. Now you
can help them think about it differently.
Gently tell them to imagine they are
watching the scene from a beautiful
airplane, or train, or magic carpet, or
whatever you child enjoys. And as the
airplane takes off and flies away, the
monster gets smaller and smaller, until
it disappears. They are now swimming
with the clouds. This NLP technique can
help them get over unpleasant media
memories and back to a restful sleep.
Children are especially vulnerable to violence in media, so we should take care that they
are not exposed to it, or as little as possible. As parents, we have a special responsibility
towards the next generation of adults—lets show them how to love instead of how to fight.
Did you find this helpful? Share it with your friends, or share your own tips
on keeping your children away from screen violence.
WHAT
TO DO ABOUT
HAIR
LOSS
When you brush your hair, do you find yourself spending more time getting the hairs
out of the brush than actually brushing? Do you take your hijab off after a long day at
work and see hairs dropping onto your ceramic floors? Then you are suffering from
the most common hair problem out there: hair loss! We spoke with Dr. Haya Ali Al
Manai, consultant in dermatology, beauty, and laser treatments at Hamad Medical
Corporation, to find out more about this troubling problem.
18
HEALTH AND LIFE
If anything goes wrong at any of these
stages, the result is hair loss. There are
many potential factors at play:
The first stage is where
the hair grows and
lengthens from the
follicles. This process
takes 2-5 years.
What causes hair loss?
Hair loss is a problem that can occur at any time and to anyone.
Hair goes through three different growth stages:
01 02 03
The second stage is where
the hair starts to get weak
and separate from the
follicles. This process
takes about 2 weeks.
The third stage is
where the hair breaks
from the follicles and
falls. This process
takes 3 weeks.
Nutrient deficiency – especially iron,
zinc, vitamin D and vitamin B
Hormonal imbalances
Thyroid issues
Genetic / inherited hair loss
Mental and emotional pressures
Skin conditions like lupus, psoriasis
or fungus
Certain medications
Post-natal depression
Excessive use of chemicals on the
hair, like harsh shampoos and dyes
What causes
hair loss in teens?
During adolescence, hormonal and
physiological changes and disturbances
occur which can lead to hair loss.
Teenagers these days have bad habits
when it comes to nutrition, like eating fast
food that is almost completely devoid of
vitamins and essential nutrients needed
for hair and body growth. Energy drinks
and other highly caffeinated drinks cause
a defect in the way the body absorbs
essential nutrients like iron and vitamins,
therefore causing hair to fall.
It appears more young
people suffer from hair loss,
is there an age where hair
loss is common?
There is no definite age where hair loss
happens. However, the percentage
of hair fall in early childhood is far less
than that in teens and adults. What
is noted is that children’s nutrition
is much better than that of adults.
Sometimes when hair loss appears at a
young age in children, this means that
the child is not receiving enough care
or nutrients.
Can hair loss be genetic
or inherited?
Some genetic and hereditary conditions
cause hair fall, so it is important that the
patient is asked if any family members
suffer from this problem. This is usually
more common in those who suffer
from pattern baldness or male pattern
baldness. This causes hair loss at the
front of the head, and can actually
affect both men and women. It is
caused by the hormone testosterone
in specific cells in the body changing
to a much stronger hormone called
dehydrotestosterone through an
enzyme (5 alpha reductase). This in turn
damages and weakens the hair follicles,
causing hair to become very fragile, and
eventually leading to baldness.
19
BODY & SENSES
What are the
treatments for hair loss?
Treatments can only be determined
after the hair is examined and the right
diagnosis is given. Each person’s
hair is different.
Is the environment or the weather
a factor in hair loss?
There isn’t much research linking environmental factors to hair loss. However, one of
the most famous studies about this was done in Switzerland and it showed that more
hair loss occurs in the summer months, less in the spring, and even less in winter.
Hair loss can be classified as:
What are the best ways to
prevent hair loss?
I recommend good nutrition,
consuming food that is packed with
iron, as well as vitamins B and D.
Using moisturizing hair care products
also helps. Once a week you can use
natural oils to moisturize your hair.
Avoid chemical products that cause
the hair to become dry and damaged,
like regularly using hair dyes.
Is there really a cure
for hair loss or just a
way to minimize it?
The treatment depends on the cause of
the hair loss. Some treatments are quick
and simple and others that require a lot
of dedication. For example, hair loss due
to nutrient deficiency is easy to treat and
fast, while genetic male pattern baldness
can take longer to cure.
01
02
Cicatricial: in Latin meaning scarring. This means it is serious and is caused
by diseases like fungal infections, bacterial infections, vitamin deficiency,
trauma, and much more. For this type, if not treated quickly, hair is lost
forever.
Non-Cicatricial: in Latin meaning non-scarring. This is treatable with
time and is easy to treat. What causes this are things we see every day like
psychologic upset, post-partum depression, nutritional problems, fever,
surgery, stress. This is easy to diagnose and avoid.
“The teeth and nails are huge indicators of hair loss caused
by genetics or disease. The appearance of the skin can indicate
diseases inside the body,” said Dr. Al-Abdulla.
So there you have it—hair loss is a problem that everyone faces at some
point in their lives, and the best way to deal with it is to take care of yourself
with a healthy diet packed with nutrients to give your body all the support
it needs to grow strong, beautiful hair.
DEMENTIA
CAUSES AND PREVENTION
Worldwide, over 47 million people have dementia, and each year an additional
7.7 million succumb to the condition. It is one of the major causes of disability and
dependency in elderly people with far reaching impacts—not only on the person
themselves, but on their family, caregivers, and society. Because of this, the World
Health Organization calls dementia a “public health priority”. To learn more about
this condition, we spoke with Dr. Maryam Al Obaidli, Consultant at the Elderly
Services Department at Rumaila Hospital in Qatar.
22
HEALTH AND LIFE
What is Dementia?
Dementia is a syndrome in which the deterioration of cognitive function goes beyond what is expected from normal
aging. Memory, orientation, learning capacity, judgment and thinking are all affected, while consciousness is not.
Dementia impairs psychological behaviors, mobility, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. A person with this
condition becomes more likely to forget things—times and dates, loved ones’ names, habitual events, familiar places.
This can lead to them not knowing where they are or how they got there. Actions we consider mundane, like dealing
with money, dressing, basic self-care, going out to the shop, are impeded by the disease. What remains is long term
memory, but it can be selective. The decline in cognitive function can spark a deterioration in emotional control, bursts
of anger, lack of motivation or socially inappropriate behaviors.
This puts a huge strain on family members, who often feel overwhelmed. The additional financial, physical and
emotional pressure can lead to a great deal of stress, as relatives have to overhaul their routines, work fewer hours,
and learn to deal with a loved one who no longer recognizes them.
The Three Stages of Dementia
Dementia is a progressive disease. It
begins with mild symptoms that are barely
noticeable, but if it isn’t diagnosed and
treated quickly, the symptoms worsen.
Dementia has 3 stages:
01
02
04
Early—This stage can be
overlooked, because symptoms
are mild, like becoming forgetful
or losing track of time.
Middle—In the middle stages,
symptoms become more
apparent and include increased
difficulty with communication,
becoming lost at home, and
behavioral changes like repeated
questioning.
Late—This is the stage of near
total dependence. Symptoms
are obvious and include difficulty
recognizing friends and loved
ones, trouble walking, and
escalated behavior changes like
aggression.
The Causes of Dementia
Dementia affects people after the age of 65. But not everyone will suffer from this
condition. Despite numerous studies on the subject, no one cause has been found
for dementia—rather, several factors come into play and increase the risk. These
include diabetes, hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol and depression. Alzheimer’s
disease is the leading cause, contributing to between 60-70% of cases. Unhealthy
lifestyles, a poor diet, smoking and lack of exercise are all linked to chronic diseases
which can in turn lead to dementia.
Dementia in Qatar
A study carried out by Hamad Medical Center and published in the Qatar Medical
Journal examined the prevalence of dementia in elderly home care patients in Qatar
between 1996 and 2003. It found that 14% suffered with dementia. Researchers
identified several risk factors, the main one being high blood pressure—60% of the
patients had hypertension—whereas family history plays only a minor role.
Statistics in Qatar
According to the latest WHO statistics in year 2015, deaths from dementia in Qatar
account for 0.91% of total deaths. This ranks Qatar 41st globally. To put this in context,
the country with the highest death rate from dementia is Finland, with 15.75%. The
lowest is Singapore, with 0.06%.
MENTAL HEALTH
Tips for a Healthy Old Age
We all want a healthy old age, one where we can enjoy watching our
children and grandchildren grow up and evolve into mature adults.
To keep your body and brain in tip top shape as long as possible, all you need
to do is follow some simple lifestyle rules:
01
02
03
Healthy diet: Ditch the processed foods, refined sugars and fizzy drinks—these
are linked to diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Instead focus on
fresh fruits and vegetables, gluten-free grains, lean protein and plenty of brainfriendly
omega 3’s (which you can find in oily fish).
Brain teasers: Keep your mind quick and sharp by doing cross word puzzles,
Sudoku, learning a new language, reading a book on a topic that you find
challenging but interesting, or playing memory games.
Move your body: There’s an old saying: “Use it, or lose it”. This applies to
your mind and your body. As we get older, we lose range of motion and
muscle mass, so exercising regularly, even in the form of gentle daily walks, is
important to maintain a fit, healthy body, well into old age.
We spoke to Dr. Maryam Al Obaidli, Consultant at the
Elderly Services Department at Rumaila Hospital, to find out about
possible treatments for dementia and the hospital’s new Memory Clinic.
What are the treatment
options for dementia?
There are two avenues open to people
who have been diagnosed with
dementia.
If the disease is in its early stages,
the advice is to move away from
unhealthy habits, like smoking, and
improve lifestyle with a healthy
diet and exercise. Practicing mental
exercises, like crosswords or
mathematical equations, can improve
memory. Using strategies like having a
daily agenda, writing lists and setting
reminders on a phone can also help.
The other option involves medication.
Patients are advised to attend the
weekly Memory Clinic at the Out-
Patient Department at Rumaila
Hospital, which specializes in
Alzheimer’s and dementia diagnosis.
The clinic performs memory tests to
ascertain the percentage of memory
loss; blood tests and CAT scans
are used to determine the possible
causes. While there is no cure, some
medications can delay the effect of
dementia on the brain. Small doses are
prescribed to begin with, and regular
follow up appointments help monitor
the progress and adjust the dosage if
needed.
“Chronic diseases
like diabetes, high
blood pressure and
strokes affect brain
cells and memory,
so we always advise
patients to manage
these diseases if
they have them.”
Can you tell us more about the
Memory Clinic?
Rumaila Hospital have developed “Enaya,”
or “Memory Clinic,” which works with
patients with severe dementia. Families can,
understandably, find it extremely challenging
to deal with the condition—the clinic provides
assistance by offering emotional support, and
teaching the best ways to interact with the
patient and how to give medication.
How do you raise awareness of
dementia?
Rumaila Hospital often hold awareness
campaigns to spread information about how
best to look after a person with dementia
and how to avoid the disease. These events
provide support and information for both
patients and families. In collaboration
with Dr. Hanadi, Head of the Elderly
Services Department, the hospital has
created workshops and lectures to share
new research about possible cures and
treatments with other medical professionals.
Can you offer any advice to our
readers?
Rumaila Hospital advise people who notice
signs or symptoms to visit the Memory Clinic. A
referral can be obtained from any health center.
FOOD
& DIET
DIET
and
DIABETES
If you’re diagnosed with diabetes, your first thought may be that you’ll have to
give up the food you love most. This is bound to trigger negative feelings, as you
wonder how your diet will have to change.
But it does not have to be that bad. In fact, you can still enjoy some of your favorite foods. The trick is to do
so in moderation, as part of a nutritious and healthy diet. Managing the type and amount of food, as well as
the timing of your meals will greatly help you to control your blood sugar and manage your diabetes.
Food provides your body with the nutrients and calories that are essential for its normal function. But not all
foods are created equal, in terms of nutrient content. Excess calories can be harmful to your health. If you
live with diabetes, you’ll need to control the amount of calories you take in, focusing more specifically on
the types of carbohydrates you include in your diet.
26
HEALTH AND LIFE
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates turn into glucose (or
sugar) after digestion and cause blood
sugar levels to rise. They are found in
many foods:
Cereal grains/flours (wheat, barley, oats, rice,
rye)
Bread
Pasta
Breakfast cereals
Biscuits
Sugar
Fruits and fruit juice
Milk and yogurt
Starchy vegetables (winter squash, potatoes)
Legumes and pulses (beans, lentils, chickpeas)
When you eat these foods, carbohydrates are
released as sugar in your blood. But not all
carbohydrates have the same effect on blood
sugar levels. Refined carbohydrates from sugar,
white flour and processed foods cause blood
sugar levels to spike quickly, whereas complex
carbohydrates from pulses and beans are more
slowly absorbed and can help keep blood sugar
levels stable. This is because these foods also
contain a good amount of fiber, which slows their
absorption. So, in order to prevent high blood
sugar, you need to control the type and quantity of
carbohydrates in your diet. Avoid foods that are
high in refined carbohydrates and sugars, and opt
instead for complex carbohydrates in the form of
natural foods. Checking your blood sugar before
and after each meal will give you a clearer idea of
the food’s effect and will help you decide on the
right amount for your body. You may find it helpful
to work with a dietitian to figure out which carbs
are right for you, and when to eat them.
Healthy Diabetics Diet
The second most important step in diabetes management is
getting your weight within a healthy range and losing any excess
body fat. Aside from ditching the refined carbohydrates in favor
of natural complex carbohydrates, there are several steps you can
begin taking today to start your weight loss journey and manage
your diabetes:
Replace high calorie foods (such as salty and sweet snacks) with foods
that are low in calories and high in nutrients and fiber (like fresh or cooked
vegetables and whole fruits). Fiber plays a particularly important role in
reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and helps control blood sugar.
Limit the fat you eat and use in food preparation. Because fat provides the
body with more calories than other nutrients, it is important to control your
intake of oils, butter and ghee. Avoid deep frying and limit the oil used in
your recipes.
Avoid trans-fat/hydrogenated fat, and saturated fats. These fats are
particularly dangerous if you have diabetes because they can lead to
blockages in your arteries, further increasing the risk for cardiovascular
disease. Trans fat are found in processed food like margarine, biscuits,
cakes, chips, and saturated fat are found in fatty meat, butter, ghee and full
fat dairy products.
Reduce your portion sizes—put your fork down between bites and savor
your food. You’ll find a smaller serving is often enough to satiate your
hunger.
Reduce your salt—this helps maintain a healthy blood pressure and protects
your body from the complications of diabetes. Be mindful of the amount
of salt you add while cooking, and hidden sources from ready-made and
processed food.
Avoid late night snacking and eat dinner earlier—your body’s metabolism
slows down in the evening in preparation for sleep, meaning there is less
energy for digestion and absorption of nutrients. Swap your late night
snack with a cup of peppermint tea.
Your dietary habits have a significant impact on your overall health and how
easily you can manage your diabetes. Reduce processed foods, trans fats,
sugar and increase natural whole foods and fiber with special focus on which
carbohydrates you choose to add to your plate. Take charge of your diabetes,
and your health, today.
Disclaimer:
It is strongly advisable to speak to a dietician before making
changes to your diet, and monitoring these changes by regularly
checking blood sugar levels.
CHAMOMILE
AN ANCIENT
REMEDY
FOR THE
STRESSES
OF MODERN
LIFE
By Lynne Ann Abrahams
The hectic demands of life often leave us overwhelmed
and too anxious to switch off. We miss out on
deep sleep and relaxation when we need it most.
Chamomile has long been a tried and trusted remedy
for sleeplessness. A warm cup of soothing chamomile
tea is not just naturally calming, but can be
safely used to treat other stress-related ailments.
28
HEALTH AND LIFE
It’s book, "20,000 Secrets
no surprise that
Victoria Zak refers
to chamomile as
'The All-Around
Comforter', in her
of Tea". Chamomile has been popular for
centuries—the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians
used the flowers for their healing properties.
Modern scientific research confirms the
amazing health, nutrition and cosmetic
benefits of chamomile and its popularity as a
modern day remedy continues to grow.
WHAT IS CHAMOMILE?
Chamomile is a member of the daisy family
Asteraceae, native in many countries
throughout Europe, and cultivated in
Germany, Egypt, Morocco and parts of
Eastern Europe. The two commonly used
species are German and Roman chamomile—
their active ingredients and uses are similar.
The plant's healing properties come from
its flowers, which contain essential oils and
flavonoids—particularly a compound called
apigenin, also found in parsley.
USING CHAMOMILE
Chamomile is commonly used to make herb
infusions to serve various medicinal purposes
both for adults and children. You can buy
chamomile in the form of dried flowers, tea
(infusion), liquid, tinctures or as a lotion.
A SURPRISINGLY POPULAR BREW
Rob McCaleb, President of the Herb Research
Foundation based in Colorado USA, estimates
that over one million cups of chamomile
tea are enjoyed worldwide every single day,
making it one of the most widely consumed
herbal teas!
Chamomile tea is naturally caffeine-free and
very mild. Add two to three grams of the herb
to a cup of water, and enjoy this calming brew
three or four times a day. You can add a dash
of honey but you might find the subtle taste,
with just a hint of apple, pleasant enough.
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF
THIS AMAZING HERB?
CALMS AND RELAXES
Both chamomile tea and oil have a calming
effect and promote a general sense of wellbeing
in cases of nervousness or anxiety.
In fact, studies on animals have shown
that chamomile contains substances that act
on the same parts of the brain and nervous
system as anti-anxiety drugs. That said, it is
not adviseable to stop taking prescription
medications without consulting your
Chamomile is commonly
physician.
Chamomile’s mildly sedative and musclerelaxing
effects may help those who suffer
from insomnia to fall asleep more easily. A
study published in the May 2005 edition of
the Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin
showed that chamomile reduces the time it
takes to fall asleep. Try drinking a cup about
an hour before bedtime.
AIDS DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS
Coumarin is a naturally occurring active
ingredient which gives chamomile its antiinflammatory
properties. Sometimes called a
“herbal aspirin”, chamomile helps to soothe
spasms that occur in the muscles lining the
stomach and intestines. It is recommended in
the treatment of gastrointestinal complaints
such as:
Diverticulitis
Inflammatory bowel diseases
(such as Crohn’s disease)
Nausea, heartburn, and stress-related
flatulence
Menstrual cramping
SOOTHES SKIN
Chamomile flower is a common ingredient
in skincare because of its anti-inflammatory
and anti-bacterial properties. The oil has a
delicate, sweet and fruity scent.
It can be applied to the skin, used as a lotion
or even added to a bath. Try it and experience
its healing power for yourself:
Soothes redness, irritation and itchiness
Soothes skin rashes, minor burns and
sunburn
Speeds up the healing of skin ulcers and
wounds
29
FIGHTS INFECTION AND
INFLAMMATION
Cooled chamomile tea is an exceptionally
versatile remedy:
Use as a compress to soothe tired,
irritated eyes
Clean and protect wounds from
infections
Use as a mouthwash to heal mouth sores
or a dental abscess
Use it as a vapour to alleviate cold
symptoms or asthma
ADVERSE REACTIONS?
Essential oils are generally safe, however
we advise you consult your physician before
use if:
You suffer from allergies to plants
such as daisies, ragweed and
chrysanthemums
You are pregnant or nursing; the
US National Institute of Health
recommends avoiding chamomile
You use blood thinners, due to the
presence of coumarin in chamomile
NATURE’S ANTIOXIDANT,
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND ANTI-
BACTERIAL REMEDY
With heaps of health benefits and almost no side
effects, chamomile is a timeless go-to remedy
for almost every ailment in the body, from
indigestion to insomnia and dry skin. Brew a
cup of chamomile tea, add a few drops of oil to
a diffuser, pillow or bath, or mix in with your
favorite massage oil to ease away tension and
promote a sense of calm. Just what you need to
cope with the challenges of modern life!
ADVERTORIAL
STRESS MANAGEMENT
FOR DIABETICS
If you’re diabetic, stress can alter your blood glucose levels. It can do this in two ways:
People under stress may not take good care
01 02
of themselves and their diabetes as this is not
their priority at that time.
Stress hormones such as adrenalin, cortisol
and those produced when the person is unwell,
can directly alter blood glucose levels.
HOW CAN YOU MANAGE STRESS?
Take regular exercise as it uses up
excess adrenalin and other stress
hormones, and encourages the body
to rest and relax.
Try relaxation techniques— guided
CD’s can be very helpful, particularly
if you have not practiced relaxation
before and find it hard to relax.
Find something that helps you
relax—it might be walking, singing,
swimming, talking to a friend,
listening to music.
Use community resources, e.g. to
stop smoking and / or reduce alcohol
intake.
Connect with other diabetics and
people in your personal network, a
family member or friend.
If necessary, consult with your health
service social worker/counsellor,
clinical psychologist or general
practitioner.
THE ART OF
FENCING
32
HEALTH AND LIFE
Enjoyed and practiced since the middle ages, fencing is one of
the oldest combative disciplines. A thrilling sport, it ranks high in
both elegance and technical challenge. We spoke with fencing
champions and the Qatar Fencing Federation head coach
Hichem Karchoud, and he told us about the details of the
sport" with "to find out more about the sport.
The concept of fencing has been around
for thousands of years, borne of the
simple human instinct to protect himself
and his family against wild animals or
invaders. Thankfully most of us no longer
need to use swords and knives for selfdefense.
In the Middle Ages fencing, or
jousting, was entertainment, a show of
how strong one’s weapon could be, and
was a bloody affair. Today, fencing is a
sport of showmanship, speed and skill,
and requires neither player be injured.
Fencing was introduced as an Olympic
sport in 1896, when it made its first
big appearance onto the world stage.
Olympic fencing started with only two
of the three types of replica swords –the
Foil and Saber. In 1900, at the Olympic
games in Paris, the Épée sword replica
was introduced and many more joined
the sport.
A LOOK BACK
The International Fencing Federation
was created in 1913 and developed the
techniques and point systems we know
today. In 1924, fencing opened its world
to women, allowing them to fence using
the Foil sword. Then, in 1933, electronic
scoring systems were introduced in
Épée, and have since been used in all
world championships.
Qatar’s Fencing Federation was
created in 2000. The following year
it joined the International Fencing
Federation and started participating in
championships world-wide. In January
2004, Qatar’s team took part in the
World Cup for Épée men’s single. Then
in May 2004, the team attended the
Gulf Championship and Youth Arab
Championship for Épée and Foil. Qatar
was named champion in Single Épée in
2005.
SWORDSMANSHIP
Fencing is a full body combat sport. Those who take up the
sport need to be quick on their feet and have plenty of energy to
spare. We spoke with some of the champions at Qatar Fencing
Federation, and here's what they had to say about the sport.
ALI TURKI
AL WAJHAN OWAIDA
16 – FOIL STYLE
I started fencing in early 2010. The sport was new and I had
never come across it before. It was a challenge at the start,
but in time it became like an addiction. It was something that
I couldn’t let go of. It took me a long time to comprehend and
understand fencing, and a lot more time to master it. I have not mastered
everything, I still feel like there are many more techniques to learn. You
need to develop your fencing techniques every day, and being a part of
the Qatar Fencing Federation has helped me understand the sport much
better. Practicing with other players allows me to learn new techniques and
styles. Sometimes this actually works to my advantage, I benefit more from
watching different movements and techniques. The style of fencing is very
important, because when I come across someone who is fencing in the
same style, I know how they will perform. But when I play with someone
whose techniques I have never came across, the most important thing for
me is to understand the way they are performing and then begin to combat.
I practice the Foil style. It is very challenging, there are a lot of rules and
complicated scoring systems.
ALI MAHANNA
AL SULAITI
15 – ÉPÉE STYLE
When I started fencing with coach Mohammed I didn’t even
know what the sport was about. I just noticed the coach
and how good he was with the sword. This made me want
to start practicing. Holding the sword, I feel powerful, and
I am rarely scared. If I get scared then I might miss a couple of points, in
a championship or match, it would feel like a waste. If you’re scared or
nervous in a championship, you can’t get the points back. Recently I went
to a championship in Bahrain and was part of a six swordsman group. I was
nervous at the start. This made me lose 2 out of 6 matches. I then got over
it and won the rest and thought to myself, “This is just a game, I don’t need
to win, the important thing is to learn and improve.” My total score in the
championship was 102. In another championship in Jordan, I took first place
in singles and in teams. Then I won silver in the team youth match. When
I practice fencing I feel good about myself, I feel confident and not afraid
because the people I train with are my friends and I learn from them as they
learn from me. However, in championship matches, you meet people you
don’t know and their styles are different so it is a bit nerve-wracking at the
start.
THE SWORDS
There are three swords used in fencing:
KHALIFA KHALID
AL YAZEEDI
SABER STYLE
I feel really good when I hold a sword. It
feels empowering and victorious. You
can’t feel nervous or scared, you must
think positively to get the points that
you need and reach your goal. I got into
fencing with coach Hichem, who took me
under his wing when I was in school. To
this day I am his student. I have been part
of the Qatar fencing team since 2008. I
was part of the Arab Youth championship
in Jordan, and I got the gold in Saber style
youth match, and silver in Saber young
adults’ match. Fencing is not a sport for
everyone. It requires a lot of hard work
and dedication and love for the sport. The
person who would excel in it would be a
person who loves it. I can’t go on for two
days without practicing, I love it so much.
Foil: Weighing 500
grams and measuring
up to 110 cm, the Foil is
rectangular and has a
hand shield measuring a
circumference of 12 cm.
Each style of fencing has its own rules. To get a point, players must make contact with
their opponent. Depending on the style of fencing, different areas are allowed:
01
01
Foil: stomach, lower part of
stomach, underarms and
back, the sides of the head
mask.
02
Épée: It is the heaviest
fencing sword weighing
750 grams, and measuring
up to 110 cm. Épée has a
triangular shape and a shield
of 13.5 cm circumference.
POINTS OF CONTACT
02
Épée: All parts of the body
are fair points if the tip of the
sword touches them, this
also includes the mask.
03
Saber: It is known as the
Arabic sword, and is very
light weighing no-more than
500 grams and measuring
up to 105 cm. It extends in
a triangular shape and the
hand shield is spherical and
connected to the end bolt.
03
Saber: The upper body
from the belt line only,
including the mask.
How to hold the sword is a technique all in itself. The correct and most
common way is like holding a pen, with the index and thumb for a controlled
grip. The hand should be as close as possible to the shield.
THE MATCH
All different techniques start off with some simple rules. The starting position “Engarde”
and the attack motion “La Fente” are the only two rules you need to know as a beginner.
Then comes the fun part, the different ways to score! Singles matches last 3 minutes with an
additional minute if there is a tie. Team matches are done in three parts, each lasting 3 minutes,
with a minute of rest in between.
The number of total
points to be scored
in team plays is 5. A
total of 15 points must
be scored to end the
match completely. The
players perform on a
“fencing arena”, this
is a rectangular metal
flooring measuring 14
meters by 2 meters. Each
player has 4 brackets in
their side of the arena.
The starting position line
The middle line (where
the monitoring device and
referee are)
The danger zone
The extended area (if the
player moves too far out of
their zone)
The referee must stand
opposite the monitoring
device and two or four
on-looking judges make
sure that all contact
points are recorded
fairly. Each player has
the right to ask for more
judges in the match.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS
But it isn’t all about show—fencing also promotes serious
health benefits. Some of the most important ones are:
01 02 03 04 05
Strength, Endurance,
Heart Health: Fencing is
all about fast movement.
It’s a high intensity,
interval workout. Nimble
footwork, lightning
movements and splitsecond
reactions all
combine into a sport
that makes the heart
pump faster, and works
every muscle in the
body. This aerobic and
strengthening workout
can protect you
from heart disease,
and reduce your risk
of chronic illnesses like
diabetes.
Improved
Mental Alertness:
Often referred to as
“Physical Chess”, fencing
needs a perfect blend
of strategic thinking
and improvisation, all
while remaining cool
and calm. Matches
aren’t only judged on
contacts. Observers also
take into account the
players’ fighting style and
aggressive or passive
personality.
Balance and
Coordination:
All of the offensive
and defensive moves
in fencing require
good balance and
coordination skills.
Because of the
diversity and range of
movements, fencing
strengthens your core
and sharpens your
cognitive abilities.
Stress Reduction:
Being both a physical
and mental sport,
fencing is a highly
effective stress reliever.
Your mind is focused
on the match, and
your body is getting
the relaxing benefits
of all those feel-good
endorphins.
Better Flexibility:
Fencing requires a
wide range of motions
to attack and counterattack.
You’re also
encouraged to stretch
your muscles before and
after matches.
Try a class today and find out how you can incorporate
Psychiatric Times
01
02
03
–Elastin
–Collagen
–Hyaluronic acid
التقنية non-epilated operation of
Anagen
ARC Food
Processing Training Center
Advanced
،Active Food Packaging
Tina
Drossos
