Using these spikes, along with the layering technique that I will explain later, allows you <strong>to</strong> add<br />

additional amounts of powerful all-natural dry nutrients without frying your plants, which is what<br />

would happen if you mixed these nutrients globally in<strong>to</strong> a soil mix. Dry nutrients like steamed bone<br />

meal and blood meal can be used in spikes very effectively. My spikes are placed close <strong>to</strong> the<br />

container rim, so the roots have <strong>to</strong> grow a bit <strong>to</strong> reach them. In a typical 2-gallon container, planning<br />

for a 9-week flowering plant with a final height of about 2.5 feet tall, I would have my spike hole<br />

about ½ an inch wide and about 90% of the height of the container. So, if my container was 1 foot tall,<br />

let’s say, my spike holes would be about 10–11 inches deep. A surprising amount of spike blend can<br />

be poured in<strong>to</strong> these holes. After filling the holes, simply add a shredded bark mulch layer on <strong>to</strong>p and<br />

water everything well.
