The virtues of Jade Flowers
Spring winds attract willow warblers and colorful
swallows; spring showers weave dainty flower
bouquets.
In this issue of Taste of Life, the fashion, cosmetics,
jewelry and watches, which we recommend for you,
all feature floral themes. Among the birds’ twitters
and flowers’ fragrance, colorful attires and cosmetics
are elegant and dreamlike; rubies, sapphires and
tourmalines are crystal clear and gorgeous. The
flowers of jade, gemstones, diamonds, cosmetics
and ocean waves… all are filled with gratitude
towards the spring for its gifts, and singing an ode
to the flowers’ magnificence.
The beauty perceived by people should possess
both the appearances of flowers and the character
of jade. An ancient Chinese poem reads: “Beautiful
as flowers, and beautiful as jade”.
The ancient Chinese analogized jade with a
gentleman’s noble characters. Jade is warm, moist
and bright, just like a gentleman’s benevolence. The
jade’s fine veining and solid texture are just like a
gentleman’s wisdom. Although a broken piece of jade
has edges, they are not sharp or harmful to people,
just like a gentleman’s righteousness – upright and
resolute, but with kindheartedness. The fashion, in
which jade object drapes, symbolizes a gentleman’s
humility, modesty and politeness. Flaws cannot
cover a piece of jade’s brilliance, and yet the jade
does not hide its blemishes, just like a gentleman’s
loyalty, impartiality and undisguisedness. A jade
object’s color can be observed from all angles, just
like a gentleman’s trustworthiness, consistency and
honesty under all circumstances. Jade possesses
a gentleman’s moral character, as it encompasses
everything and benefits where it belongs.
In this spring day of blossoming flowers, we wish
our readers to enjoy the mesmerizing fragrance and
dazzling colors of flowers and to be in a cheerful
mood like flowers blooming!

Beauté des fleurs, éclat du jade
Un vent de printemps apporte des passereaux dans
les saules et des hirondelles dans les fleurs, une pluie
printanière tisse des brocarts luxueux et des fioritures
multicolores.
Dans ce numéro, la mode, les cosmétiques, les bijoux
et les montres que nous vous proposons ont tous pour
thème les fleurs. Au milieu de floraisons parfumés et
gazouillis d'oiseaux, les tenues colorées virevoltent
aux côtés de toilettes poudrées, le jade éternel libère
sa lueur translucide. Des fleurs de jade, des fleurs de
rimmel, des fleurs de diamant, des fleurs d'écumes, il
n'en est pas une qui ne rende grâce aux offrandes du
printemps, ni ne loue la beauté des fleurs.
Les Anciens disaient: « Avoir la beauté d'une fleur et
la beauté du jade. » La beauté d'une personne résulte
de l'alliance de l'apparence d'une fleur et de la vertu
du jade.
Un homme vertueux se compare au jade. Le jade est
doux, lisse, aux lueurs pleines de nuances colorées,
tout comme la morale d'un homme vertueux. Sa
trame est fine, sa texture solide, à l'image de la
sagesse d'un homme vertueux. Quand une pierre
de jade se brise, les arrêtes sont saillantes mais non
pointues et ne blessent pas, tout comme la droiture
d'un homme vertueux, juste et inébranlable, mais
empreinte d'amour et de bienveillance. L'aspect
pendant d'une parure de jade symbolise l'humilité des
hommes vertueux qui honorent leurs inférieurs, avec
déférence et modération. Les impuretés ne gâchent
pas le jade, le jade ne cache pas ses impuretés, tout
comme la loyauté d'un homme vertueux, impartiale
et sans artifices. Les éclats du jade sont perceptibles
de n'importe quel angle de vue, à l'image de l'honneur
d'un homme vertueux, qui ne trahit jamais sa parole,
même en l'absence de témoin. Le jade porte la vertu
et l'attitude des hommes d'honneur, il englobe tout et
répand le bien autour de lui.
En ces jours de printemps aux milles floraisons, nous
souhaitons à nos lecteurs de respirer le parfum des
fleurs, de s'imprégner de la diversité florale, et de
s'épanouir comme des fleurs au printemps !

As the first British brand invited by Chambre syndicale de la haute
couture to participate in the Paris haute couture fashion show in
the recent 100 years, Ralph & Russo lives up to the expectations
by bringing us back to the elegant Europe in the 1940s and 50s, in
terms of the traditional haute couture techniques and the perfect
silhouettes resembling the poses on old-fashioned photos. Inspired
by the French gardens, the gowns’ embroidery is intertwined with
a rich flavor of romance. The brand’s advantageous tailoring brings
forth overall lively lines and styling.

Stéphane Rolland is always able to present a romantic queenly style in the most
dramatic fashion. In this season, its collection’s visual effects are created by the
stiff silhouettes propping up the yarn – while introducing complicated variations
and layered elegance, at the same time, the exhibition of feminine slender
figures is not being affected. This season’s couture has been inspired by his walk
through the gardens. Therefore, the elements used are all very natural. From the
lines, we can observe the falling leaves and the wings of butterflies.

After successfully completing an event together at the Museum of
Decorative Arts in 2009, Oscar Carvallo and the kinetic and op artist
Carlos Cruz-Diez join forces once again, rendering the former’s theme
in this season even more gorgeous. His 35 gowns are full of prints in
complex patterns, multi-colored stripes and the matching of various
materials, having completely sculptured the female body into an exquisite
piece of art.

Tony Yaacoub’s entire collection boldly employs only one single color – the graceful
and stylish Tiffany blue. With the models’ every step, the complicated craftsmanship,
flowing yarn and the gowns decorated with embroidered jewels make the gowns
sparkle like the weaves in a pristine lake, as refreshing and moving as the Chinese
porcelain. Tony Yaacoub said that the Tiffany blue is the royal color in Greece, equivalent
to bright yellow being the imperial color in China. And what he would like to
strive for is to restore the beauty of that era’s courtly attires.

Horse model. The leaf motif, stemming from classic Chinese iconography, is
directly engraved in the gold dial. With the horse engraving, on which the details
of the mane and coat measure a mere fraction of a millimetre, the artisan

Jaquet Droz is the first watchmaker to walk through the gates of the Forbidden City – and the Middle Kingdom. This year Jaquet
Droz launches three new Ateliers d’Art models that pay tribute to the sign of the Horse. Three exclusive models have been created
using the exclusive know-how of Jaquet Droz’s master craftsmen, specialized in highly complex techniques: engraving, painting
and Grand Feu enamel. Two Arab thoroughbreds have been delicately painted on the ivory enamel dial of 39 mm. A horse from
the American Northwest seems to jump out from the black enamel 43mm dial. The dial of 41 mm has been chosen to depict a in
18-carat red gold horse rearing up on its hind legs against a backdrop of the Great Wall of China, engraved and patinated by hand
on a mother-of-pearl dial. Each of these new models in a limited edition of 88 pieces.

克 呂 茲 泉 (Fontaine de Vaucluse) 是 索 爾 格 河
(La sorgue) 的 源 頭 , 位 於 法 國 東 南 部 普 羅
旺 斯 , 是 法 國 最 大 的 一 眼 泉 水 。 在 雪 山 積 雪 融 化 的
時 候 , 索 爾 格 河 流 量 每 秒 超 過 110 立 方 米 。
傳 說 中 索 爾 格 河 裡 曾 經 住 著 一 隻 叫 Coulobre 的

的 密 封 罐 裡 , 當 然 也 可 以 泡 在 清 水 中 , 這 種 方 式 的
好 處 是 酒 或 水 里 浸 透 了 松 露 香 味 , 做 菜 的 時 候 可 以
用 來 調 味 。 也 可 以 把 松 露 包 在 錫 箔 紙 中 , 放 在 塑 料
盒 中 速 凍 , 使 用 前 拿 出 來 , 不 過 拿 出 來 就 要 一 次 食

Located in Provence in the southeast of France, “Spring of
Vaucluse” (Fontaine de Vaucluse) is the source of the River
Sorgue (La Sorgue), as well as the largest spring in France. After
the mountain snow melts, its average flow can reach 110
m3 per second.
According to legend, there once lived a monster called Coulobre
in the River Sorgue. This extremely hideous female
dragon was subdued by the bishop Saint Véran in the Middle
Ages. There is a sculpture in the town of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse
(Commune de Fontaine de Vaucluse) serving as evidence. Today’s
River Sorgue is quite docile, with clear greenish water,
whose temperature is about 13 degrees year-round and warm
in winter and cool in summer.
In France and some other European countries, there exists
a hotel-restaurant network called Logis. At a Logis hotel, in
addition to its distinctive accommodations, there would also
be dedicated chefs preparing culinary specialties for the hotel
guests. Situated by the River Sorgue in the town of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse,
Park Hotel (Logis Hôtel Restaurant du
Parc) is one of the ten Logis hotels in the department of Vaucluse
specializing in truffle cuisine. Here, besides interacting
with the chefs in the kitchen and learning how to prepare the
local culinary specialties, you can also enjoy an extraordinary
dining environment. In the hotel’s courtyard, you can admire
the mist-shrouded mountainous landscape in front of you and
listen to the gurgling river flowing by your dining table. Even
if you dine inside the hotel, the river would also be in sight. If
you are fortunate enough, you may also see through the windows
one or two canoes struggling against the current to go
upstream. Perhaps for the sake of being named “Park Hotel”,
during the day, several cocks from the neighboring households
would come over to take a stroll; and in the evenings, there
would be ducks emerging from the water.
Provence is the world’s most important black truffle producing
area, accounting for 80% of France’s production. The truffle
harvest season spans from November to March of the next
year. Speaking with the heart-warming local accent, head chef
Daniel demonstrated to us in the kitchen how to preserve truffles:
the most ancient method is the disinfection preservation
technique. It requires one to place truffles, which have been
scrubbed clean in advance, in sealed jars filled with Bordeaux
red wine or cognac. Of course, the truffles can also be soaked
in water. One advantage of this approach is that the wine or
water would absorb the truffles’ flavor, so it can be used as
seasoning in preparing dishes. You can also wrap truffles in
a sheet of aluminum foil and place them in a plastic box for

quick refrigeration. Prior to consumption, you simply take the
truffles out from the fridge. However, you must consume all
truffles preserved in this method at once. Another way is to
place the truffles at the bottom of a bottle, put a few raw eggs
on top and then seal the bottle. After four or five days, the
eggs would have become saturated with the smell of truffles,
and they would perfect for making soft scrambled eggs with
truffles. If not being preserved in sealed bottles, the truffles
must be consumed within two or three days after being unearthed.
Chef Daniel opened a box of fresh truffles and asked us to
inhale their aroma first. We all took several deep breathes. The
aroma filled the entire kitchen. He then put some butter in
a small pan. After the butter melted, he beat and put several
whole eggs in the pan. He kept the pan’s temperature at a relatively
low level and constantly scrambled the eggs. He then
removed the pan from the oven, put it back, and then remove
it again, until the eggs became cooked. He then shaped the
eggs with a few drops of fresh cream. To finish, he removed
the pan from the oven and stirred ground or sliced truffles
into the eggs. This is the simplest way to savor the freshness of
truffles. In southern France, this is called “eggs with truffles”
(Brouillade aux truffes).
When the dishes were served onto the table in succession,
including cream of Jerusalem artichoke soup with truffle,
(velouté de topinambour à la truffe), roasted veal tenderloin
with mashed potatoes in truffles and seamed white carrots
(filet de veau rôti accompagné de puré de pomme de terre à la
truffe et aux carottes blanche à l’étuver) and champagne and
truffle ice cream (sorbet à la truffe et au champagne), Chef
Daniel quipped, “These are the achievements of today’s culinary
lesson, and they are prepared by our combined efforts. If
they are not tasty, I will take the responsibility.”
Three days after enjoying an all truffle-dish banquet, we all
felt that we could still smell the flavor of truffles.
In the summer, tourists would come here from the ancient
city of Avignon to escape the heat, and they would enjoy meals
near the cool and refreshing River Sorgue. In the nearby town
of l’Isle-sur-la-sorgue, there is a well-known antique furniture
market, which is the second largest in France, after the market
of Saint-Ouen in Paris. It is a must-visit for tourists.
Of course, there is another thing you must do here: savoring
the famous wines produced by the “Pope’s New Castle” winery
(Châteauneuf du Pape), and seeing with your own eyes the
winery’s soil and the 13 grape varieties that are used in producing
the famous wines.

In 12 Balzac Street, Paris’s 8th distrct, the kitchen of Pierre
Gagnaire, everything is quietly carrying on, there is neither
collision nor loud noise. In Pierre Gagnaire’s opinion,
cooking should be in a mood tender and kind-hearted.
Taste Of Life (TOL): What is the spirit of French cuisine
for you?
PG: The spirit of French cuisine is first a culinary heritage.
Cuisine is a part of our culture and heritage, the cuisine of
ceremony is something really important for the French, and
it is like a show, a little bit like an artistic work or traditional
work. Taste is the most important; it must take precedence
over all. Something that has been well preserved is the
decorative aspect of it, which is a mark of respect to others.
It is this little extra which shows special attention.
TOL: How can we identify French Cuisine?
PG: The sauces. French cuisine is about sauces. Today, there
is a mix of different styles, there are chefs with their own
personality who express their cuisine differently, but the

TOL: What is more important for you as a chef?
PG: It is the honesty and the sincerity of what we do. It is
working with your heart, to create something that resembles
you. Through someone’s cuisine, one must recognize his or
her expression.
I hope people can be touched when they eat what I cook, that
something a bit different happens that makes them live an
exceptional moment, that is really the reflect of the efforts
that we put in to create some sweetness, some emotions,
something beautiful which tastes good.
TOL: What are the characteristics of your dishes?
PG: It is cooked with passion. It uses very good products and
is made with a particular concern for consistency, something
for which I give all that I have inside. It is a cuisine, which has
its own personality. I cannot describe it.
TOL: How do you teach your students?
PG: By being with them, by talking to them, by listening to
them, by getting to know them and by being close to them,
but without authority, with determination and benevolence.
TOL: It is as in your cuisine, do you wish to express benevolence
as well?
PG: Absolutely!
TOL: What do your clients expect when they come?
PG: They simply want to spend a good time, in a place that

authentic, because that is what luxury means today, I mean
authenticity.
It is the desire to surprise, to please. Pleasure is a key word.
Giving people something that enables them to elevate their
soul, not only the stomach.
TOL: How do you see your career in the coming years?
PG: I remain faithful to my youth projects, which have not
completely deviated and remain very close to our daily
cooking, I am still obsessed with taste and creativity.
30 years ago, this profession was more brutal, tougher, we
worked in bad conditions, people were poorly paid, and often
the kitchen was not clean. In the beginning, I did not enjoy
this profession, so I realized that I should do the work a little
differently.
Money is important of course, but it is not our driving force,
our driving force is the quality of what we do, the desire to do
well. My motivation is the search for quality and for honesty;
it creates a sort of bubble of peace and softness.
I am still a cook. The rest is the consequence of my cooking.
Therefore, I have to remain a cook to have a meaningful life
and make it work.

做 法 : 綠 茶 葉 放 進 擂 缽 磨 成 粉 末 後 , 再 加 入 炒 熟 的 花
生 、 玄 米 及 芝 麻 持 續 研 磨 , 擂 好 後 加 開 水 , 湯 底 就 算 完 成 。
湯 底 可 以 單 獨 享 用 。
鹹 味 擂 茶 泡 飯
配 料 : 九 層 塔 100 克 、 香 菜 30 克 , 鹽 ; 薯 仔 菜 、 芥 蘭 、
大 蒜 、 四 季 豆 、 長 豆 、 芹 菜 、 蝦 米 、 炒 肉 、 豆 乾 、 花 生 、 蘿
蔔 乾 ( 菜 脯 ), 以 上 蔬 菜 可 隨 季 節 性 食 材 變 化 搭 配 , 選 五 ~
七 種 菜 色 搭 配 食 用 。
做 法 : 擂 茶 湯 底 主 料 快 磨 好 時 加 入 九 層 塔 、 香 菜 和 適 量
鹽 , 磨 好 直 接 沖 熱 水 作 成 鹹 味 擂 茶 湯 底 。
食 材 洗 淨 , 將 蔬 菜 、 豆 乾 全 部 切 小 段 或 小 塊 狀 , 熱 油
鍋 , 依 序 爆 香 豆 乾 、 蝦 米 、 蒜 , 蔬 菜 備 用 , 不 要 炒 太 油 。
碗 中 盛 白 飯 或 米 仔 , 鋪 上 炒 好 的 蔬 菜 、 豆 乾 粒 、 蘿 蔔
乾 。 淋 上 剛 沖 泡 的 鹹 味 擂 茶 湯 底 , 擂 茶 泡 飯 就 完 成 了 。
Years ago, on a snowy night shortly before the Chinese
New Year, I waited for a bus more than an hour in a
small town. I was almost frozen when an old Hakka
couple passed by. They took me to their home, let me dry
by their fire and fed me homemade soup. As Chinese New
Year approaches again, make your own “Lei cha” or “pounded
tea,” the soup that amiable pair gifted me on that memorable
night.
The Hakkas’ ancestors originated from the Central Plain in
China (now Shanxi and Henan Provinces), so although they
live many different places in the world, they are Han people.
Trace the origins of “Hakka” (“guest families”) and you
will find the name witnesses the sorrow of generations of
Hakka, as well as their relentless perseverance in pursuit of
better lives.
Hakkas have survived several large-scale migrations, mostly
caused by wars, since the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC). Despite
many centuries of farming and trailblazing in their new homelands,
the Hakka refer to themselves as “guests.”
The old couple’s Lei cha was aromatic, thick and delicious.
Like all Lei cha, its base was made of green tea leaves which
have antioxidants and offer cardiovascular protection. The
nutrients of green tea and all of Lei cha’s ingredients are
more easily absorbed when ground. In winter, after consuming
a large quantity of meat and fish, it is very easy to end up
with an acidic constitution and an elevated cholesterol level.
Drink a bowl of fragrant hot Lei cha to tonify and clean your
body. There are many Hakka centenarians!
Lei Cha Soup Base
Ingredients: 300g green tea leaves (raw), 200g roasted peanuts,
200g black and 200g white sesame seeds (raw), and
100g roasted (browned) rice.*
Directions: Grind green tea leaves into powder in a mortar
and pestle. Add roasted peanuts, brown rice and sesame
seeds and continue grinding. Add water into ground mixture.
The soup base is now ready and can be served alone as a beverage
by adding hot water.
Savoury Lei Cha Rice Soup
Ingredients: 100g basil, 30g cilantro, some salt; sweet potato
leaves, broccoli, garlic, green beans, Chinese long beans
(long-podded cowpeas), celery stalks, dried peeled shrimp,
sautéd meat, dried tofu, peanuts and dried radish. The mix
of the vegetables can be changed according to the season.
Choose five to seven ingredients.

食 用 , 是 一 種 可 長 期 保 存 大 米 的 方 法 。 簡 單 作 法 也 可 以 直 接 把
生 米 炒 熟 , 但 此 法 只 能 加 入 擂 缽 一 起 研 磨 , 不 適 合 直 接 食 用 。

Directions: When Lei cha soup base ingredients are almost
ground, add basil, cilantro and salt and continue pounding. Add
hot water to turn ground mix into savoury base.
Wash and dice vegetables and dried tofu. Put frying pan on high
heat. Sauté dried tofu, dried peeled shrimp, garlic and vegetables
in sequence. Make sure they are not too oily.
Fill a bowl with rice or brown rice. Cover the rice with sautéd vegetables,
dried tofu and dried radish cubes. Pour freshly brewed
savoury soup base onto rice.
Sweet Lei Cha
Suggested Ingredients may include snow lotus, ginkgo, lotus,
or Gordon Euryale seeds; green peas, Job’s Tears, Chinese yam;
adzuki, rice, jack, mung or scarlet runner beans; soybeans; black
soybeans; millet; wheat or red wheat; barley, buckwheat, oats or
brown rice.
Directions: Sweet ingredients can be used selectively, according
to preferences. Total quantity of sweet ingredients should not
exceed one-third of soup base ingredients’ quantity. First, roast
ingredients. Prepare soup base, add choices and mix with soup
base. Grind mixture into paste. Add some sugar into mixture.
Add hot boiling water into mixture before serving.
*Roasted rice is made from soaking, cooking, sun-drying and roasting rice grains as a preservation method. It can be found in a Chinese grocery store.

prosperous period of China’s great Tang Dynasty.

“Those who know do not talk. Those who talk do not
know,” says the Tao Te Ching. “Those who place themselves
last often end up in front.” Fang Xuanling (579 - 648) was a
quietly effective and humble administrator famous for following
those tenets in the early years of the Tang Dynasty
(618 - 907).
Fang is often eclipsed by the brilliance and banter of
Wei Zheng (580 - 643), or the sternness of Wang Gui (571
- 639)—contemporaries in the court of the great Emperor
Taizong (598 - 649). But for sheer constancy and dedication,
there was no greater work horse than Fang.
This founding father was most crucial before and during
what are known as the Golden Years (627 - 649), when it
seemed that Chinese civilization had reached its grandest
and most prosperous point. One of the original ministers
of the dynasty, he swore his loyalty to its first emperor even
before the emperor had conquered “all under Heaven.” He
presented himself to “the King of Qin, Li Shimin” before Li’s
100,000-strong army stationed on the Guanzhong Plain in
617. Li was only 19, and after leading the revolt that toppled
the Sui Dynasty, became Emperor Taizong. Fang, then
39, face, dress, voice, and words making clear to all that he
was a scholar, bonded with Li immediately. One was bookish,
the other bristling with military prowess; one gentle
and refined, the other a war hero; one like water, the other
like a mountain. They understood how they complemented
one another, and were inseparable from that point on.

貞 觀 之 治 伊 始 , 唐 太 宗 將 朝 廷 官 員 精 減 到 460 人 。 房 玄
齡 讓 一 個 高 度 精 簡 的 行 政 機 構 一 直 高 效 運 轉 , 平 穩 地 支 撐 起

封 房 玄 齡 為 宋 州 刺 史 和 梁 國 公 , 為 此 房 玄 齡 惴 惴 不 安 。 事 後
他 上 奏 太 宗 :「 臣 已 經 擔 任 宰 相 , 現 在 又 被 封 為 宋 州 刺 史 ,
這 樣 恐 怕 會 使 大 臣 們 爭 相 追 逐 名 利 , 使 朝 政 大 亂 。 臣 認 為 不
妥 , 請 陛 下 先 罷 免 臣 的 刺 史 職 位 。」 唐 太 宗 便 依 了 房 玄 齡 的
奏 折 , 只 封 他 為 梁 國 公 。
房 玄 齡 辭 掉 了 宋 州 刺 史 之 後 , 朝 中 大 臣 紛 紛 倣 傚 , 辭 去
能 世 襲 的 官 職 。 唐 太 宗 感 慨 地 說 :「 上 行 下 效 , 朝 中 大 臣 今
天 能 有 這 樣 行 動 , 都 是 玄 齡 的 功 勞 。」
後 來 , 房 玄 齡 又 被 加 封 為 太 子 少 師 。 當 他 初 到 東 宮 , 皇
太 子 要 行 拜 師 禮 , 並 已 備 好 儀 仗 時 , 房 玄 齡 慌 忙 避 在 一 旁 ,
堅 決 不 受 , 最 後 還 躲 回 家 去 了 。 人 們 看 到 當 朝 宰 相 如 此 謙 虛 恭
謹 , 不 禁 心 生 感 動 。
貞 觀 16 年 , 房 玄 齡 覺 得 自 己 不 宜 長 期 身 居 宰 相 高 位 , 多
次 提 出 辭 呈 。 唐 太 宗 對 他 說 :「 辭 讓 , 固 然 是 一 種 美 德 。 然 而
國 家 長 久 以 來 都 依 靠 您 , 如 果 失 去 了 像 您 這 樣 的 賢 相 , 朕 就 好
像 失 去 了 左 臂 右 膀 。」
晚 年 的 房 玄 齡 經 常 疾 病 纏 身 , 但 唐 太 宗 依 然 委 以 重 任 , 下
詔 說 :「 玄 齡 多 病 , 就 讓 他 在 家 裏 躺 在 床 上 處 理 公 務 。」 朝 中
遇 到 大 事 , 便 叫 人 抬 他 上 殿 。 每 一 次 遇 到 這 種 場 面 , 唐 太 宗 便
流 淚 不 止 。
仁 厚 待 他 人
房 玄 齡 以 一 顆 「 怕 心 」 對 皇 帝 、 同 僚 , 甚 至 對 老 婆 , 而 骨
子 裏 卻 是 一 種 達 到 極 致 的 仁 厚 和 雅 量 。
房 玄 齡 是 有 名 的 「 怕 皇 帝 」 的 大 臣 。 也 許 因 為 過 於 親 密 的
原 因 , 唐 太 宗 經 常 拿 房 玄 齡 當 「 出 氣 筒 」。 房 玄 齡 不 爭 辯 、 不

他 對 同 僚 也 謙 和 忍 讓 。 皇 親 李 神 通 攻 擊 過 他 , 重 臣 蕭 瑀 鄙
視 過 他 , 大 將 尉 遲 敬 德 訓 斥 過 他 , 每 當 被 當 成 朝 中 發 洩 情 緒 的
對 像 時 , 他 總 是 顯 得 若 無 其 事 。
有 一 次 房 玄 齡 得 了 重 病 , 一 個 口 齒 輕 佻 的 小 官 吏 開 玩 笑
道 :「 趁 宰 相 小 病 去 探 訪 還 有 點 好 處 , 如 果 病 得 快 要 死 了 , 去
探 訪 也 就 沒 甚 麼 用 了 。」 有 人 將 這 話 傳 給 房 玄 齡 , 而 他 在 見 到

在 浩 浩 蕩 蕩 的 貞 觀 時 代 , 唐 朝 的 開 國 大 臣 房 玄 齡 一 直 沉 默
著 , 埋 頭 忙 碌 著 。 他 如 同 一 杯 溫 開 水 , 既 無 色 無 味 、 樸 實 無
華 , 又 潤 物 無 聲 、 涵 容 一 切 。 似 乎 哪 裏 都 見 不 到 他 的 高 大 身
影 , 但 他 的 影 響 又 無 處 不 及 。「 貞 觀 之 治 」 的 豐 碑 , 彷 彿 處 處

房 玄 齡 的 陵 墓 位 於 陝 西 唐 太 宗 昭 陵 的 陪 葬 園 區 中 , 與 唐 太 宗 世 代 相 伴 。 昭 陵 陵 園 從 唐 貞 觀 十 年 ( 公 元 636 年 ) 始 建 , 地 上 地 下 遺 存 有 大 量 盛 唐 時 期 的

Fang Xuanling’s tomb is situated near Emperor Taizong’s mausoleum, so as to permanently accompany it. The construction of the mausoleum started in
636 AD and now there are a great many historical relics from the mighty Tang Dynasty there, both above and below ground. This statue of Emperor
Taizong is on the mausoleum’s grounds.
Fang was quickly entrusted with the emperor’s pen: he
drafted official Calls-to-Arms, the polemic letters that were requested
on occasion to call out a social ill or rally the people. He
showed the world an intellectual countenance, to recruit others
of his ilk into the emperor’s service.
Fang’s most important work, however, was behind the
scenes: running and oiling the machinery of the vast Chinese
bureaucracy to which the emperor delegated mundane tasks,
and quietly guiding day-to-day decisions. Emperor Taizong
sometimes thought Fang too meddling. At one point, he told
him to stop the micromanaging and only take care of major
issues. Except… the task of Caiwuguan (Treasurer-in-Chief).
The job was tedious and despised by all other scholar-officials.
If not endured by Fang, it would not have been done properly.
Fang, as Caiwauguan and Chancellor, personally ensured that
Tang budgets and accounts were well-managed for 22 years.
But Fang, always unassuming, rejected all titles. When
Taizong elevated him to “Prefect of Song Prefecture,” Fang
answered: “I fear that this might encourage the ministers to
eagerly chase after fame and fortune, making the imperial administration
chaotic. I believe that this is not appropriate.” He
implored his emperor to reverse the honor. Others followed
Fang’s example, setting aside the stately titles that had been
bestowed them for their service.
Also renowned for never arguing, Fang quietly accepted
Imperial reprimands. He admitted to his fault in disagreements,
and never contradicted Taizong. A downside of
their close relationship was that Fang sometimes became
the emperor’s punching bag—even when he had done no
wrong. In such cases he simply concluded the matter with
an apology. Some mocked him for being spineless, but
Fang’s thinking was: “Better the emperor take it out on me
than make wrong decisions.”
This perceived feebleness made him a target for other
members of the royal family, but it also masked a deep inner
strength: Whenever he was treated poorly, he simply took it
on the chin and remained unperturbed, a trait that may be a
prerequisite to true contentedness, some believe.
As the invaluable Fang aged, he ailed. But Taizong still
trusted him with pivotal tasks. An Imperial edict emphasized
“Since Fang Xuanling is sickly, let him work from
home and handle administrative tasks while lying in bed.”
When crucial court matters needed Fang’s input, he was
carried in on a litter, propped up on pillows to speak. According
to contemporaneous accounts, on nearly every occasion
of this kind the emperor of the mighty Tang Dynasty,
the great Taizong, would look at his old friend and weep.

nineteen century antique furniture,

The eight processes of Ateliers Allot
Frères know-hows include: seats
and furniture joinery, cabinetmaker
techniques, marquetry techniques,
wood carving, lacquer techniques,
gilding techniques, vanish techniques
and upholstery. Joinery and wood

All-wood furniture is manufactured
with oak, chestnut, walnut, yew, red
and other valuable hardwood timber.
In particular, the marquetry process
uses 43 kinds of precious materials
made of wood; rabbit, tendon and
bearskin are used as natural rubber

Louis XIV, Louis XV, the transition
period, Louis XVI, Directoire period,
the Restoration of Louis XVIII
and period style; these influences
can be seen through its furniture:
desk, table, chest of drawers, desk,
wardrobe, sideboard , narrow table,
bed, and so on.
Allot founded his family business in
1812 and is the eighth generation
descendant. René Allot with his
brother Michel Allot represent the
seventh-generation descendant
of the company by inheriting the
family business from 1979, at the
location of Brittany Loudéac, where
is located a showroom of 1300
square meters and workshops.
Unfortunately, in 1999, the family's
collection and wood materials were
burned in a fire. After a full decade
of re-construction, a collection of
over 600 works has been achieved.
Oustide of its French market, Allot
furniture is also exported to South
Korea, the United States, Russia
and other places, and sometimes
overseas dedicated site, such as
custom furniture for the Kuwait
Emir and the Crown Prince of
Thailand. In 2006, Ateliers Allot
Frères got the national certification
of "living cultural heritage
enterprise."
Since January 2014, Allot work is
exposed at 61 rue de Vaugirard,
in the sixth district of Paris, an
exhibition hall of 180m² open to the
public, letting the world know about
French craftsmanship.

Place Vendôme is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful architectural

A Pertinent Investment
The membership fee to join 9 Stars ® Club Terre Blanche is
set at 350,000 €, and its annual management fee is between
15,000 € and 20,000 €. The members are co-owners of the
shares and have access to permanent enjoyment of the
facilities for two people (plus their guests). Once the 203
members are selected, other applicants have to pay an annual
fee of 3,500 € to be registered on a waiting list. Membership
shares can be re-sold to the registrants of the waiting list with
a starting price of 375,000 €, through a blind auction.
Terre Blanche Domain is in the center of the Cote d'Azur,
between Saint-Tropez and Monaco, and 20 minutes drive
away from Cannes. It covers 300 hectares. And it was
purchased from Sean Connery by the German billionaire
Dietmar Hopp, who then invested 500 million euros to
transform the property into one of Europe’s most luxurious
resorts. The shares of the 9 Stars ® Club Rivera are valued
at 36.1 million euros, which makes it the largest landowner
of the Terre Blanche Domain and grants it the access to the
entire domain.

3 月 27 日 至 30 日 , 一 年 一 度 的 Art Paris Art Fair 巴 黎 藝 術 博 覽 會 再 度 在 大 皇 宮 舉 行 。 今 年 的 APAF 較 往 年 更 加
符 合 展 覽 會 三 年 前 所 確 立 的 新 定 位 —— 發 掘 東 方 藝 術 的 歐 洲 展 會 。
這 次 有 來 自 20 個 國 家 超 過 140 個 畫 廊 的 作 品 組 成 的 多 個 主 題 展 覽 區 , 例 如 「 承 諾 」、「 藝 術 設 計 」、「 巴 黎
春 光 」 等 。 參 展 畫 廊 50% 來 自 國 外 , 標 誌 著 APAF 真 正 的 國 際 化 。 正 值 中 法 建 交 50 週 年 的 2014, 這 次 的 Art
Paris Art Fair 透 露 著 一 股 不 尋 常 的 訊 息 。 在 數 個 主 題 展 覽 區 中 有 一 個 最 特 別 的 名 為 「 中 國 之 尊 客 」。
Held each year at the Grand Palais, the annual edition of Art Paris Art Fair, “APAF” (27-30 March) is more in line
with its new identity and the direction established three years ago : a European exhibition that discovers the Oriental
arts.
This time, the works of more than 140 galleries from 20 countries form many thematic sections, such as “Promises”,
“Art Design”, “Springtime in Paris”, and so on. 50% of the participating galleries are from abroad, meaning
that APAF is becoming truly international. As 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between China and France, this Art Paris Art Fair sends an unusual message. Among the thematic sections,
one platform is called “China as Guest of Honor”.
The organizers have invited 90 contemporary Chinese artists to exhibit their works of art. This year’s exhibition
turns again the spotlight on Chinese artists who are long-term Parisian residents, including Zao Wou Ki, Chu Teh
Chun, the founder of the “Star” group Wang Keping as well as the Literature Nobel Laureate and artist Gao Xingjian,
whose works are exhibited by Galerie Claude Bernard at the art fair. Other invited artists include the well-known
Rong Rong, Yue Minjun, Liu Bolin and Ma Liuming.
Over the years, the contemporary Chinese art has been in a relatively awkward position from the perspective of
the Western art. We often see very similar artists and the “stars of market”. As some Chinese artists have abused
commercial formulas and monopolized media attention, the Western media has no shortage of stereotypes about
China.
However, this time Art Paris Art Fair explores in-depth the diversity of contemporary Chinese art. The emphasis is
put on a generation born in the 1970s and 80s, who grew up in large cities, are proficient in using the Internet and
the new media, and traveled and studied abroad. These artists are highly politicized and interested in social issues,
including the effects of urbanization. Through this project, APAF seeks to present a panorama of contemporary
Chinese artists from several generations, to let the world look toward the East, and see a group that has risen to the
forefront of the international art scene in less than 30 years.

但 這 次 的 巴 黎 藝 術 博 覽 會 , 深 度 挖 掘 中 國 現 當 代 藝 術 的 多 樣 性 。 重 點 展 示 七 八 十 年 代 出 生 的 長 於 大 城 市 ,
熟 知 互 聯 網 、 新 媒 體 , 在 外 國 旅 行 遊 學 過 的 一 代 人 。 他 們 對 政 治 問 題 、 社 會 問 題 、 城 市 問 題 有 高 度 興 趣 。
APAF 力 圖 通 過 這 個 項 目 呈 現 出 幾 代 中 國 現 當 代 藝 術 家 的 全 景 , 讓 世 界 凝 視 東 方 , 看 到 這 個 團 體 在 不 到 三 十
年 的 歷 程 中 已 經 走 到 了 國 際 藝 術 舞 台 的 最 前 沿 。
