Covid cases are on the rise again in Australia.

More than a month ago there were just over 20000

cases a day with some 20 fatalities; now it comes

to over 50000 cases daily with some 100 fatalities.

Infectious Disease Specialists are warning for more

to come, up to 100,000 cases where our medical

system would crash as more people rush in and

die. Thus the government is being urged to enforce

mask mandate so as to slow down the infection and

supress the death rate.

In working out Covid strategy the government

may not just follow medical advice, but to gain more

public support the government needs to explain

why the advice is not taken. Our Covid death rate

is still very low in below 400 out of a million; hence

the various State governments are not motivated

to enforce stricter measures in the society. But the

latest poll indicated that over 60% Australians would

go along with some forms of mask wearing in public

area, whilst only 20% objected. Both the medical

experts and public are convinced that such measure

could ease pressure on our public health system.

Unfortunately, the politicians have been inert in their

leadership role.

Is the pandemic really done? The Australian

society has been grilled for almost three years.

Health workers are falling under enormous

pressure, teachers are quitting due to the

workload, paramedics are stressing under red

code, small businesses are closing with no staff

or no customers, overseas students are lacking,

people are staying home for work… they all live

under anxiety of the infection and the long-Covid.

Obviously, it is a joke to say that we are all over

from it. But the government has no proactive idea to

cheer up our gloomy society in overall.

Yes there are many means such as quarantine,

vaccine, medication for us to cope with Covid

compared to over two years ago. We should have

better confidence to rebuild our society upon all the

challenges. As we give thanks, we hope people in

power could have the vision and the accountability

to work together with and lead the public out of the

murkiness of the pandemic, especially for the long

neglected ethnic minority communities.

The Sameway Issue 663 was scheduled

to be published on 15 July. However with the

chief editor diagnosed with Covid-19 positive

on 12 July and put into isolation for 7 days,

the issue was cancelled and publication

delayed to 29 July. We apologize to our

readers for the inconvenience caused.

Lexus LC500 coupe

By William Leong

The gorgeous and luxurious Lexus LC

coupe is available in two delicious flavours

– 3.5-litre V6 Hybrid LC500h and 5.0-litre

V8 LC500. In Lexus terms, the LC stands for

Luxury Coupe.

The 2022 LC500 coupe powertrain

changes combined with extensive

chassis tuning, delivering increased

body reinforcement, lighter suspension

components, and new electronic cornering

assistance, have been "revised" for

improved stability and control-ability. The

available glass roof has been updated

from clear to privacy glass, and a 21-inch

two-tone alloy-wheel design that targets a

more aggressive look while also enhancing

aerodynamic performance are now

standard.

We tested the LC500 5.0-litre V8 Coupe,

pricing from $194,747 plus on-road cost,

with the $15,000 Enhancement Pack option.

(Enhancement Pack provides light-weight

carbon fibre additions and more focused

handling changes). The LC provides

outstanding value before even turning a

wheel because its spectacular exterior looks

like a million dollars.

Lexus LC is available in 10 different

colours: White Nova, Slate Grey, Titanium,

Graphite Black, Infrared, Carnelian, Zinnia

Yellow, Khaki Metal, Deep Blue, and Sonic

Silver.

When I first saw the LC I thought of a

samurai sword – sharp, shiny and refined.

With a low-slung bonnet and sweeping roofline,

the coupe looks capable of slicing

through the air like a sword.

Eye-catching exterior details include

grille, "arrowhead" LED headlights, and

L-shaped tail-lamp clusters. Door handles

aerodynamically recessed within the doors

(which have aluminium skin mounted on

carbon fibre structure) pop out in a V-shape

to grab when the car is unlocked.

There is an optional Sport+ Package

that adds an active rear spoiler which

automatically deploys when speed exceeds

80kmh and specifies carbon fibre reinforced

plastic for the roof.

Not that the LC500h needs more help

with street credibility. When at the South

SAMEWAY ISSUE 663 | P. 20 29.07.2022

Melbourne Market on Saturday, my press

car got plenty of attention from pedestrians

and motorists, like some exotic prototype

had escaped from a European Motor Show,

and when parked at Port Melbourne beach

some passer-by took pictures. Also, how

many drivers I pass turn their heads and

gawk? Seriously, nearly everyone stares at

this dream masquerading as a car.

It has expansive wheel arches filled

with 21'' 10 spoke wheels, curves inwards

in its centre, and has an impressive big

rear end and wide shoulders around the

inner passenger cabin. It looks interesting

and sophisticated from every angle, with a

subtle merging of glass and metal along the

fastback look rear roof and window lines.

This very interesting treatment is continued

in the interior with the glass look across the

whole dashboard.

The Lexus LC is

exotic-ness and unique.

The car is very well

balanced, with an

extremely low centre of

gravity, engine mounted

behind the front axle,

low weight, then allaround

independent

double joint multilink

suspension -

all contribute to its

handling beautifully.

The Lexus 5.0-litre V8 is quick, powering

from standstill to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds

flat, although its surprising ability to overspin

the rear wheels in anger might waste a

split-second when accelerating aggressively,

and is agile. I find the gear ratios numbers 2,

3, and 4 are stacked close to one another. It

dives into corners confidently and changes

speed/direction without any delay. It steers

with the exact amount of assistance needed.

The steering wheel is terrific, too – handily

sized, positioned just right, and a pleasure

to hold. That is not an exaggeration, it is an

understatement.

On the road and highways, the test car

behaves like a prestige grand tourer –

comfortable in any road/traffic situation.

The boot cannot accommodate much

baggage, even without a space-eating tyre

(the car rides on run-flat tyres), with only 197

litres.

The LC500 cabin is beautifully designed,

stylish decorated, and generously equipped.

The interior is also very well-made, right

down to the finishing of the carefully handsewn

leather gear-shift knob. The cabin's

lovely leather upholstery is accompanied by

classy Alcantara, which appears to drape

from the door panels.

All the controls are user-friendly and

almost all switches, menus/sub-menus,

graphics, and alphanumeric would be

familiar to current Lexus owners.

“Dash-ears” dashboard controls include two chunky knobs,

sticking out from each side of the instrument panel cowling – one to

select drive mode and the other for traction/snow mode.

The front seats are fantastic – attractive, plush, and supportive.

The rear seats might look good but are pretty cramped.

Service and warranty

The LC500 is covered by Lexus’ four-year/unlimited-kilometre

warranty. Servicing is recommended every 12 months or 15,000km.

It can be collected from an owner’s home or place of work, with a

complimentary loan vehicle delivered door-to-door.

You also get access to the three-year Lexus Encore ownership program, which gives

Ampol/Caltex fuel discounts (5-cent/litre), invitations to luxury dinners and events, as well as

luxury hotel partnership benefits.

There is no capped price servicing, but the first service is complimentary.
