Patricia Zapata - LaGuardia Community College - CUNY

Patricia Zapata came to the United States from Colombia knowing very little 

English and without a clear notion of what she wanted to do with her life in this 

new country. She took various jobs, including working at a bakery and cleaning 

apartments, until she realized the way to a better living was to learn English. 

Enrolling at the English Language Center was her first step, and with hard work 

on her part, things started to fall into place. 

Patricia went on to enroll in the college, 

majoring in Accounting and graduating 

with honors. She accepted a position as 

fiscal assistant at Bank Street College 

of Education and two years later was 

promoted to Grants Accountant in 

the Business Office.

In conjunction with the National Association of Power Engineers (NAPE), Chapter 44, 

we offer the Licensed Refrigeration Machine Operator program for members of NAPE. 

Passing this course prepares you for the written and practical exam for the license issued 

by the New York City Fire Department. All participants must be members of NAPE. If you 

are not, you may join when you register. In addition to tuition, annual dues for members 

taking the Licensed Refrigeration Machine Operator course are $144, with an initiation 

fee of $56. Certificates are awarded upon successful completion of the course. 

This 200 hour course is approved by the NYC Fire Department as a requirement for 

licensing for refrigeration machine operators, meeting the requirements of both class 

training and shop work. The course will cover maintenance and repair of compression 

and absorption refrigeration systems, and the safety precautions that should be 

observed in operating, maintaining and repairing refrigeration machinery. You will visit 

modern refrigeration facilities that manufacture and maintain equipment. This class 

includes training for EPA certification as a “Universal Technician”. Instuctor: Stephen

If you are seeking to obtain licensure as a Home Inspector, this course meets the 

educational requirements established by New York State of 100 hours of instruction 

and 40 hours of field training under the supervision of a licensed inspector established

agreement, reporting formats, code enforcements, reading and understanding house

Prototype Lab Builds Reputation in New York City 

Where do designers go when they 

need to craft a product in 3-D? 

In the New York City area, they can come to Length Width 

Height (LXWXH), the fabrication lab at LaGuardia's NYDesigns. 

The lab provides access to equipment; guided instruction by a 

professional fabricator; opportunity for collaboration with 

NYDesigns resident designers, and other resources so designers 

can bring their creations to life. 

Companies of all sorts have used the lab to make objects, scenes 

and exhibits. Designers may use the equipment themselves, or 

they can have the LXWXH team do the production work for 

them. Notable projects include making some of the wings that 

models wore in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2010 that 

aired on CBS in November and an exhibit that has been built for 

Madame Tussauds New York's wax museum. 

LXWXH fabrication lab intern works on a project for a novelty furniture company. 

Recently, LXWXH collaborated with fashion brand JF and Son and industrial designer Kevin McElroy to produce a line of laser-cut 

clothing pieces, which were exhibited on March 28 at JF and Son's flagship store in downtown Manhattan. The line, which will go into 

general production in summer 2011, attracted interest from magazines such as Women Wear Daily (WWD), Elle, Harper's Bazaar and 

Paper Magazine. Other clients of the lab include Ally Bank, Discovery Channel, Hyundai and Yahoo. 

“In our lab designers can experiment, build products, and network with professionals in the industry,” says Natalia Arguello, Director of 

NYDesigns. “Our members share knowledge, expertise and resources. This combination makes LXWXH the perfect spot for young firms 

looking to grow and stay connected to the fabrication community in New York.”

CHALLENGING EXPECTATIONS 

Paula Michelin 

2011 New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year 

The New York Times has honored Paula Da Silva Michelin, instructor in LaGuardia’s Center 

for Immigrant Education and Training, as the 2011 ESOL (English for Speakers of Other 

Languages) Teacher of the Year. The citywide competition recognizes educators who have 

consistently excelled in helping adult students learn English and develop the skills they 

need to create successful new lives in the United States. 

Ms. Michelin is, perhaps, an unlikely winner, considering that English is not her first 

language. It must have been meant to be. Having studied at Pontificia Catholic University 

of Campinas, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she majored in American Literature and came to New 

York City with the idea of furthering her education. In 1995 she applied for the Teaching 

English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate program at the New School, 

and by 2003 she came to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) at LaGuardia. 

“After teaching in a few private language schools in New York City … I thought it would 

be interesting to work with and teach immigrants, like myself,” says Ms. Michelin. “I thought I could use my experiences to help them better 

understand the challenges and navigate life in this new country that they had come to adopt as their own.” Teaching ESL with a civics 

thematic approach in the College’s Center for Immigrant Education and Training, she explains that the program is designed to help 

immigrants improve their English skills and be more effective participants in New York City community life. Classes cover a variety of topics 

from government and history to community resources and workers' rights. Some notable projects she’s worked on with her students include 

having them write letters to President Obama and later turning those letters into digital stories. Additionally, in 2009 she received a grant to 

write lesson sets for We Are New York, an Emmy-Award winning series of ESL videos created by the Mayor’s Office of Adult Education and 

CUNY’s Office of Academic Affairs. Her lesson sets are currently being distributed and shared by teachers throughout the city. “Although I 

am on my way to obtaining a Master’s Degree [in TESOL], I feel that my real school has always been my class, my co-workers, and students. 

They are the ones that help me to become a better professional,” says Ms. Michelin. 

Ms. Michelin is the third LaGuardia instructor to receive honors in this competition, which is now in its fifth year. Ellen Quish of the Adult 

Learning Center was the first New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year in 2007, and Hilary Gardner of the Center for Immigrant Education 

and Training was an honoree in 2008.

Prepare to take the GED/high school equivalency exam and start building 

your future! You will focus on reading, writing and mathematics, and 

participate in career planning workshops, presented by academic

Mercy Ofori 

Hard Work Pays Off 

Mercy Ofori was stuck in a dead end job and didn’t see a way out. Until she decided to 

head back to school to get her GED diploma. It was hard work. She had to study for two 

semesters just to qualify for the GED course and then another year in the GED 

preparation class. Upon passing the GED exam, Mercy applied to CUNY Start, a college 

transition program that provides remedial instruction in reading, writing and math for 

college-bound GED and high school graduates. Having passed the CUNY placement tests 

and nabbing a nomination for this year’s Peter Jennings Scholarship Laurel Award, 

Mercy enrolled at LaGuardia as a Physical Therapy Assistant major. She hopes to work in 

her new field and continue her studies to become a Physical Therapist. “I can now say 

with pride that my future holds a promising and better life,” she says. “I also feel that I 

am now a good example for my children.”

Signs of Success 

When she began the American Sign 

Language (ASL)-English Interpretation 

Program at LaGuardia, Jennifer Ward 

was planning to work as an interpreter 

with the certificate she hoped to earn. 

But as she became immersed in the 

program, she decided to set a higher 

goal: a bachelor's degree in the field. 

"I am currently in my second semester 

with Empire State College. I was able to use my certificate of completion 

from LaGuardia's program and transfer it as credit classes," explains 

Jennifer, who is taking advantage of the joint offering between the 

ASL-English Interpretation Program and the SUNY four-year school. 

Currently a staff ASL interpreter for LaGuardia's Program for Deaf Adults, 

Jennifer is thinking about teaching ASL in a post-secondary educational 

setting or working with the Deaf population in a Human Services capacity 

when she graduates. She also sees graduate school in her future. "[Staff] 

along with the program's instructors have made it possible for me to not 

only finish the program ... but to realize that I am in fact able to reach for 

higher ground," asserts Jennifer.

Brian Sandres 

Growing Up the LaGuardia Way 

WHAT IF? 

Brian Sandres has been coming to LaGuardia Community 

College since he was nine. That is, he’s been taking classes 

at College for Children and Teen Academy. Nine years later, 

Brian is on the brink of graduating from high school and 

will be starting at the college in the fall. “I was fascinated 

by the help that was being provided, and it encouraged me 

to want to apply the same work I was doing here to my own 

school work,” he says. Noting that he has received many 

honors in high school, Brian explains how the programs 

have helped shape his educational foundation. “Ever since 

I first came to LaGuardia, I was amazed by how the school 

looked. I was nervous at first, but all that changed as soon 

as I saw how supportive the teachers were,” he says. This 

positive experience has helped Brian focus on his future.

Alexis Frazier 

Director, 

College for Children, Teen Academy 

Lessons from Childhood 

Alexis Frazier believes in giving children every opportunity to succeed in school. Perhaps 

because this was instilled in her by her mother. “My mother was a semi-literate black 

woman, one of sixteen children, who grew up in the segregated south during the 1920s,” 

says Dr. Frazier. “As my mother raised three children, she struggled mightily to help us with 

our schoolwork, always trying not to let her limited literacy skills get in the way. Helping the 

kids with school work was one of my mom’s many responsibilities, one she took very 

seriously.” Taking this cue, Dr. Frazier started out as a teacher of adults at LaGuardia in the 

1970s, teaching in and directing basic skills, ESL and other programs. She became Director 

of College for Children in 1995 and later of Teen Academy. “These programs are important 

because they help ensure the academic success of the students who attend our classes,” 

says Dr. Frazier, who holds a doctorate in education in the areas of Applied Linguistics and 

Educational Psychology with a specialty in Remedial Reading. Noting the far reaching 

effects of the programs, she explains, "I’ve had Teen Academy students become 

matriculating students at the college. I’ve had children who have participated in College for 

Children return, having graduated from college to teach in our Teen Academy program. I’ve 

had parents whose children were participants return to bring their grandchildren to attend 

our classes." Her reward, she says, is hearing about and seeing firsthand how her students 

and former students have gone on to be successful in their education.

Discounts 

The Division of Adult & Continuing Education (ACE) offers discounts to the following groups: 

30% tuition discount is offered to alumni association members, LaGuardia under-graduates, 

senior citizens (65+ years), faculty/staff and the families of faculty/staff. 30% tuition 

discount is offered to the children of undergraduates and to the children of faculty/staff 

enrolling in College for Children and Teen Academy courses only. College for Children and 

Teen Academy also offer family discounts (20% off the third course for same student 

registering or 10% off each course for third and fourth child). 50% tuition discount is 

offered to public assistance recipients (except for College for Children and Teen Academy 

courses). 

Only one discount can be applied per course. Discounts and waivers apply to all courses 

except those designated ND. 

To receive a tuition discount you need to register in person no more than three working 

days prior to the start of the selected course and show appropriate ID. All discounted

Delinquent Payments 

The College reserves the right to withhold the privileges of class attendance, use of facilities 

and services, and access to certificates of completion from students delinquent with 

payments.

Refund Policy 

For courses under $299 

100% (-$15 per course) if written request received 3 business days prior to 1st day of class 

50% (-$15 per course) if written request received prior to second week of classes 

For courses $299 and above or more than 50 hours of instruction 

100% (-$15 per course) if written request received 3 business days prior to 1st day of class 

75% (-$15 per course) if written request received prior to completion of 10% of class hours 

50% (-$15 per course) if written request received prior to completion of 20% of class hours 

NO REFUND GRANTED AFTER THE REFUND PERIOD IS OVER 

$15 will be deducted from refunds as shown above up to a limit of $30 

Allow 4-6 weeks to receive refunds for payment made by check or cash 

Allow 2 billing cycles for credit charges to reflect refund on monthly statements 

Members of the military needing to withdraw from class at short notice will be considered 

on a case-by-case basis.
