Historic racing at Laguna Seca in the 250LM - now worth US$18M
“In 1997 it was a great privilege to race Kerry Minolas’s
Jaguar C type (ex Moss) on the famous circuit at Monaco for
the Historic Racing Series with 26 other cars. It was the
best historic race meeting I have been to with Prince Albert,
Princess Stephanie and Sir Stirling Moss giving out the
awards, where we won our class in this event.” said Spencer.
“Going through the famous tunnel where so many other
great grand Prix drivers have gone, moved me to recall
all this racing history, especially with the Jaguar engine
screaming off the walls to remind me!” he said.
Another great historic racing event was the Colorado
Grand, which Kerry had entered his Ferrari 250 SWB
(short wheel base). The car was a factory racer, which came
third overall at Le Mans and first in the GT class.
It was called a Factory hot rod, having the very special 250
TR engine (320 hp), thinner chassis tubes, all aluminium
body, perspex windows combining to make a very fast and
enjoyable car to drive.
The Colorado Grand was run by the Colorado State Patrol
where we were told that they would turn a blind eye to
speed, but if we did something silly we were on our own. The
event was 1,000km with sixty cars across Colorado and the
Rockies, with the proceeds going to Patrol Officers families,
killed in the line of duty. It was a terrific event combining
high speed driving and a lot of social activity.
“In 1994, I met Alan Webber and his son Mark at Amaroo
where my son Mathew raced Mark in Formula Fords
together. We formed a strong friendship which still lasts
today and Mark came to live at our house, when he came to
