Welcome to J’AIME
As a proudly local, independent magazine,
here at J’AIME we love to seek out
interesting stories from people who are
also doing their own thing. This issue we’re
taking a look at some of the people and
businesses who are contributing to Lichfield’s
revival as an independent foodie haven.
Nathan Carter is the city’s very own fabulous
baking boy; in just two short months his
Bore St Bakery has won over the masses with
amazing bakes. And just down the street,
Aussie barista maestro Deborah Pease has
started a coffee revolution in the city with
her hidden gem, Melbourne in Lichfield.
With some fantastic restaurants and dining
experiences, the cathedral city is certainly
a destination that should be on every
discerning foodie’s list.
Elsewhere, we’ve got some fantastic
competitions to whet your appetite this
month. The BBC Good Food Show is
heading to Birmingham’s NEC and you can
win tickets, while we’ve also got a glamorous
prosecco afternoon tea for four up for
grabs at Mere Green’s newly-opened FSK
Steakhouse and Prosecco Bar.
Art lovers can also take a peek behind the
scenes at unique Sutton Coldfield gallery
Artifex as it prepares to celebrate 25 years
in business - plus there’s the chance to win a
£150 voucher to spend at the gallery.
We’d also like to congratulate the winner
of our September competition; Laura
Woodcock, from Fradley, scored a cocktail
masterclass for herself and seven lucky
friends at Lichfield’s exclusive Le Rêve bar.
Congratulations, we hope you enjoyed the
experience!
The fabulous baking boy
A LICHFIELD BAKERY WITH A DIFFERENCE IS CAUSING A STIR ON THE CITY’S FOODIE SCENE,
AND WITH ONE SIMPLE AIM - TO MAKE BRILLIANT BREAD. AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS MORE
NATHAN’S SIGNATURE
‘WILD BORE’ SOURDOUGH
It’s 1am and the streets of Lichfield’s picturesque
centre are quieting down as the last of the late
night revellers seek out their taxis and head home
to bed. With the bustling bars and restaurants now
closed, a hush descends and it’s only the glow of the
moonlight and street lamps which illuminate the city.
For Nathan Carter, however, the working day is only
just beginning. Come morning, the 28-year-old baker
will be ready for business as punters line up outside
his Bore St Bakery, ready to collect their daily loaves
and morning pastry treats. But first, there’s a whole
night of work ahead.
“The bread is long fermentation, as artisan bread is,
so it’s all made the night before,” explains Nathan.
“I start at 1am and work right through until the shop
opens at 9am, when I then go out front and start
selling.
“On a Friday night getting ready for Saturday it’s
pretty miserable because I have to walk down Bird
Street past all the bars where people are having a
good time, and I’m off to start a long shift all by
myself!
“It’s just me; I bake, I sell, sometimes with help in the
shop from my girlfriend Rosie, but it’s all good fun.
And people want to know how everything’s made,
what’s in the bread, and they like that it’s been made
on site and any questions I can answer because I’ve
done it.”
And when he closes each day - often some 14 hours
later - it doesn’t stop there; the next step is a further
three hours of prep to get ready for the next night’s
shift.
Bore St Bakery opened at the start of September and
in two short months has become a word-of-mouth hit
on Lichfield’s growing independent food scene.
“Things were happening where it made sense for me
to set up on my own, and Lichfield felt like it had a
bit of a gap for a bakery so I thought I’d give it a go,”
6

explains Nathan, who had been working in a bakery
in Birmingham for the past three-and-a-half years.
“I’m really passionate about bread; it’s what I love to
do, and people within Lichfield really wanted to help,
which was nice.”
Originally from Bridgnorth, in Shropshire, Nathan
studied geography and town planning at university
in Birmingham - a far cry from his role in the bakery
kitchen today.
“I was in Birmingham doing a soulless graduate job,”
explains Nathan. “I’ve always been into food and fine
dining, that side of things, and I just decided it was
time for a change.”
So he got a job in a wholesale bakery which supplied
bread to several Michelin-starred restaurants and
cafes around the Birmingham area, and started
learning a whole new trade from scratch, throwing
himself in at the deep end.
“I loved it; it was something different and there’s
something great about being creative and having
an end product to sell,” says Nathan. “And I think
there’s a certain freedom to learning as you go along
which is really nice. I learned from a guy who was
self-taught, and I’m kind of self-taught too; there’s
not a rigid structure that way. I can understand
different processes and do things in a different way,
and as long as the product turns out the way I want
it’s fine.
“ I’m putting my heart and soul into making this
bread, but when people come in and say it’s the best
bread they’ve ever tasted or that it’s a lovely loaf or it
looks nice, it’s so rewarding.”
After the hectic Saturday stint, Nathan closes the
bakery on Sundays and Mondays to allow himself
time to regroup.
“It does mean I can have some kind of social life,
even if I’m pretty much like a
zombie for most of it,” he laughs.
“Unless you’re really passionate
about what you’re doing, this kind of
lifestyle just doesn’t work. You’ve got
to want to put the hours in.”
When you step inside Bore St
Bakery, it’s not what you might
expect from a traditional bakery. A
huge wooden desk where Nathan
wraps up his wares ready for
customers dominates the shop, while
the rest of the decor is quirky and
eclectic. Only the window shelves,
piled high with delicious-looking
baked goods, and the unmistakeable
scent of bread in the air gives the
game away.
“The whole point of this place is that I didn’t want
it to look like a bakery, I didn’t want it to look
traditional,” says Nathan. “I wanted to do something
a bit different. I picked up the Persian rug from a
house clearance for about £25, and the desk is my
statement piece from Peppermill Antiques.”
A velvet curtain separates the shop from Nathan’s
work space, while quirky lamps and fresh flowers
adorn the surfaces.
THE UNUSUAL DECOR IS
A REAL TALKING POINT
Nathan’s signature bake is his white sourdough loaf,
which he jokingly calls the ‘Wild Bore’ loaf, in a nod
to the bakery’s Bore Street location.
“Around 75 per cent of my products are sourdoughbased,
which is long fermentation. Tomorrow’s bread
is in the retarder tonight so it gets a good 18 hours of
bulk fermentation.
“I’ve got granary ones and walnut ones, and the
other day I had a damson one because I had a glut
of damsons,” he says. “I’m trying to use seasonal
stuff; I know it’s bang on trend but it just
makes sense. If I’ve got a glut of stuff I’ll use
it, if people give me stuff I’ll use it. It also
helps me to be creative so I’m not getting
stagnated.”
Every Saturday also brings a speciality
loaf using creative flavours and seasonal
inspiration; when we chat, Nathan is
preparing a delicious-sounding carrot and
anise concoction.
“Obviously Saturday is the busiest day,
so changing things up helps to keep
me interested and keeps the customers
interested,” says Nathan. “They see the same
things every day, and a lot of people will come
in and just want a white tin loaf, but it’s nice
to be able to give them something different.
“And being my own boss means that if I fancy
something I can put it on. I’ve been doing
lardy cake, which is crazy old-school and
no-one really does it any more, but I was brought
up with it and I like it so I do it. I’d say about 90 per
cent of people who buy it are over 65 but there’s
always space for old-school stuff.
“Being such a new business it means testing the
waters, seeing what people really like and what
makes the most sense given the time I’ve got. It’s
all about mixing it up a bit; I’ve got my staples but
everything else is a flexible feast. I want to keep
things interesting because being on my own, for
nine hours a day in a little cabin in the middle of
Lichfield, can get a bit crazy.”
As well as his signature loaves, Nathan loves to
experiment with treats for his sweet-toothed
customers.
“The patisserie is a smaller side, but the sweet stuff
flies out in the mornings,” says Nathan. “I’m doing
Swedish bullar-style chocolate and cinnamon knots,
Chelsea buns and seasonal sorts of things.
“It was mainly going to be just bread to start with,
but the appetite for sweet stuff is immense. I doubled
what I did last Saturday and everything sweet was
still gone by 9.30am. A lot of time people pop in for
a loaf and pick up something sweet too. I’m looking
at croissants and Danish pastries too, but it’s so timeconsuming
and being a one-man band stretching
myself to capacity already there’s only so much I can
take on.”
A particular favourite among Nathan’s customers
has been his glorious egg custard tarts, with no fewer
than 500 of the picture-perfect pastries flying of the
shelves in the bakery’s first five weeks. But you need
8

to be quick; the sweet treats, like the loaves, don’t
hang around for long. More often than not, by early
afternoon customers will be greeted with a sign,
scribbled on a brown paper bag and stuck to the
door, proclaiming that the day’s bakes are all gone.
“I’m yet to have a day where I haven’t sold out,
which is lovely, and I’m yet to work past 2pm, which
is lovely,” says Nathan. “I couldn’t have expected it
when I started.
“Having anything wasted would really bug me
though. People come to me and ask me to bake
more; they’re used to the culture of Tesco where it’s
always there and when they close they just bin the
leftovers and couldn’t care less. But I’ve put all my
effort, and heart and soul into that bread, so having
to throw it away would kill me. The scraps and odds
and ends from trials which haven’t turned out right
get taken to a local farmer for the pigs, but that’s it.
“People are really getting on board with the concept;
I can only make what I can make and when it’s gone,
it’s gone. If you want to treat yourself on a Saturday
then come early doors because last Saturday we
have a queue of about 15 people stretching all along
the window at 9am and we didn’t stop until about
10.30am.
“I don’t want to change my business model so that
we always have everything available; you go to any
good restaurant on a Saturday at 8pm and you can’t
expect to get a table, you have to book. And it’s the
same here.”
Nathan is continually experimenting with new
flavours and new ideas, as well as perfecting and
adding twists to old favourites
“It’s just me, I like how things are done and I’m my
own biggest critic,” says
Nathan. “I taste and
test everything myself;
if I’m not happy with
the structure of breads
then hydrations will be
changed, different flours
will be used, everything
is flexible. It’s the joy and
the massive frustration
of being a baker, because
one day to the next things
can over-prove or underprove.
Sometimes the
sourdoughs will jump
up in two hours because
it’s warm and they prove
in the right time, and
sometimes they can take
four and they’re just coming out as customers arrive
because they’re on a go-slow; you have to just judge
it and juggle everything.
“I wouldn’t ever want to give out products that I’m
not happy with to customers.”
Bore St Bakery has already been taken to the heart
of the city’s independent food scene, with local
businesses lining up to give a helping hand.
“There’s a really nice foodie scene in Lichfield
now, with the food festival and lots of independents
popping up,” says Nathan. “From local businesses,
I’ve had nothing but support.
“James at Pom’s Kitchen came to me before I
even opened and he’s embraced the products.

It’s a partnership which works really well because
our brands work well together; he’s got a fantastic
independent restaurant and he supports other
independents too. He couldn’t get much more local
either, his chefs walk over each morning to collect
their bread!”
Nathan also supplies luxury Lichfield bed and
breakfast St John’s House with bread, and has just
started working with Swinfen Hall to supply a range
of breads and sweet treats.
As the festive season rolls around, Nathan is planning
some European-inspired treats to whet the appetites
of his loyal customers.
“I’ve got a Polish sister-in-law so I’m currently
working my way through her Christmas recipes,
spiced breads and gingerbreads, that sort of thing.
There’s also the Christmas food festival so I’m doing
something special for that too. There will be festive
bakes, but nothing traditional so don’t expect a
mince pie - unless I’ve gone mad and it’s a mince pie
sourdough!”
And while Nathan’s promising start in business looks
certain to secure a successful future, there are no
grand plans for baking domination.
“I’d never planned further ahead than paying that
first bill and staying afloat,” he admits
“Bore St Bakery is me, it’s this building, it’s people
knowing that I’ve made everything I sell. It’s being
able to make smaller loaves next week because so
many people have asked me to do smaller loaves that
SOURDOUGH FOCACCIA
READY FOR THE OVEN
I’ve gone out to buy smaller loaf tins. It’s being able
to listen to my customers and give them what they
want.
“I’m aspirational to an extent but I’m not here for
the money, I’m not here for Bore St mark two. I just
want to make good bread.”
The colour of royalty, plum screams opulence and
grandeur and makes a particular impact when used
in large swathes; think wall coverings and large
furniture pieces for a real design statement. Dark walls
are perfect for created a cosseted vibe, while a velvet
centrepiece.
If you’re looking for a minor makeover, plum is ideal
GIVE your home a more natural, organic look as we
head into the cooler months; think nature-inspired
hues and textures to help bring a touch of the
outdoors in. Warm and relaxing in essence, the look is
easily achieved with chunky knits, woven textures and
a carefully considered colour palette.
Draw inspiration from nature’s design and the
composition of the untouched world. Earthy tones mix
with off whites, soft creams and a spectrum of greys
that leads up from the palest tone to dark slate.
Shadowy grey hues and muted neutral tones look
incredible layered with materials such as wood, cork
and terracotta, with leather and knits coming into play
to add textural contrast and a cosy element.
And when it comes to accessories, the key word is
rustic. Think beautiful organic ceramics, jute rugs,
woven lampshades and linen tablecloths - this trend is
all about natural elements being used together.
INTERIORS
Creating cosy
DON’T get down when the nights draw in; get
snug instead. Last year’s obsession with the Danish
concept of ‘hygge’ - a feeling of cosiness and warmth
- shows no signs of slowing down as we head into
the colder months. It’s about creating a sanctuary, a
place to escape to, where you can relax and unwind
in ultimate cosiness.
The softest of soft furnishing are key here; it’s time
to embrace those most snuggly of textures. From
faux fur to sheepskin and super soft wools, blankets,
cushions, throws and rugs need to be a snug as can
be. And there’s a ‘more is more’ approach; think
oversized, chunky, and lots of it.
Ambient lighting is another integral part of the
concept, particularly the warming glow from
candlelight and roaring fires; leave the ‘big light’
alone and add cosiness to your space with displays of
candles on every surface. Now all you need to do is
grab a good book and a mug of hot chocolate, and
your cosy retreat is complete.
BARISTA EXTRAORDINAIRE DEBORAH PEASE IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF A COFFEE REVOLUTION
IN LICHFIELD WITH HER QUALITY, SPECIALITY BREWS. AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS MORE
AUSSIE BARISTA
DEBORAH PEASE
Turmeric, beetroot and lavender may not sound
like ingredients you’d normally find in your average
coffee shop. And you’d be right.
But, tucked away down an alley just off the Market
Square in Lichfield’s heart, Deborah Pease isn’t
running your average coffee shop. The tiny kiosk,
with its artistically grafittied walls and intriguing
menu, couldn’t be further away from the national
coffee chains which dominate our high streets.
Over the past six months, though, Debs has started
something of a coffee revolution in the city. From
7.30am every day the alley is packed with those in
the know, seeking out their daily caffeine fix and
bonding over a love of turmeric lattes and perfectly
extracted espressos.
On Fridays and Saturdays, punters are quick of the
mark to pick up one of Debs’ home-baked delights -
the now-famous Lichfield ‘cruffin’. Forget the ‘cronut’
and the rainbow bagel; the cruffin is the baked
goodie du jour. A hybrid of muffin and croissant,
filled with whatever delicious concoction Debs
decides on that day, it’s the perfect accompaniment
to a beautifully brewed specialty coffee.
Originally from Melbourne, Australia - probably
best known in the UK as the home of TV favourite
Neighbours - for Debs, coffee has been a lifelong
passion. And it’s no wonder.
Melbourne is a city obsessed with coffee. Cold drips,
aero-press and cupping are common words in the
local vernacular thanks to a widespread passion
for the bean, and it’s virtually impossible to turn
a corner in Melbourne without being met by the
26

aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting down a
laneway.
And it’s Melbourne for which Debs’ cafe -
Melbourne in Lichfield - is named.
“Melbourne has been voted coffee capital of the
world for the past three years; we took the title from
Seattle, who took the title from Italy,” says 37-yearold
Debs.
“I’ve been in coffee for 20-odd years; all my family
are in coffee and I upset them when I went to work
for a major chain. I had my own store, I was a
qualified coffee trainer - and then this global chain
went under. And I wondered where I was going to
go.
“I’ve worked for some of the finest roasteries in
the world, what we’d call the large independents in
Australia, and I’ve worked for world barista
judges and world barista champions. I was a
site manager and had a few huge sites; some
of my baristas were amazing and have gone
on to represent Australia. However I was still
missing something.”
So on her very own coffee discovery journey,
Debs went off to work on coffee plantations
around the world, starting in Guatemala
before moving onto Mexico.
“I started to learn that what I was teaching
from the books didn’t actually translate into
real life,” she says.
“A lot about fair trade really upset me; fair
trade is a business and that doesn’t mean the
farmers necessarily get the money that they
should. I learnt very early on that I wanted
to do direct trade; fair trade can have 32
people in the chain but direct trade can have
three, which means more money for the
farmer.
“We were living with farmers underneath
their roofs, and they’re living with huge
families and have donkeys in their kitchens
and dirt floors; experiencing that really
makes you want to make sure the farmers
are getting more. So that’s when my whole
ethos changed.
“I wanted to be happy with coffee, and to
make people happy with coffee.”
When Debs’ husband Andrew, an electrical
engineer by trade who also works alongside
Debs in the cafe, got a job in the Midlands
the couple decided to make Lichfield their
home. Andrew, who’s originally from York,
had been living in the States and the couple
met while travelling in Africa.
“I’ve worked for a lot of companies in the UK and
none of them take coffee seriously, which has been a
bit upsetting,” admits Debs.
“In Australia you can’t work in a cafe unless you have
a certification in coffee-making. So when I moved to
England I thought I’d be able to pick up a contract
in training, and I got here and found out that there’s
no training. I walk into stores and see people with
‘barista’ written on their shirts and then find out
they’ve had no training. There’s a huge difference
between a real barista and someone who makes
coffee.
“And for me, the biggest thing is being passionate
about coffee - it doesn’t matter if you’ve had training,

if you’re passionate then that’s the first step. But I
was noticing that there wasn’t that level of passion.
“I trained all my baristas when I worked in
Birmingham for a few independents, and the ones
who showed passion got taken under my wing and
got all of the knowledge I had. There’s a coffee
diploma that’s now recognised worldwide and I’m
working on getting some of the baristas I’ve trained
to take that on.”
Debs had just left a role with a large company when
Andrew, by pure chance, saw the hidden-away unit
was up for lease. He felt it would be a perfect step for
Debs, but she wasn’t so sure until Andrew persuaded
her to take a look.
For Debs it was love at first sight.
“It felt like home; it just fit in the with the Melbourne
culture,” she says. “In Melbourne there are lots
of hidden cafes in alleys, so that’s the kind of
environment I’ve come one. With a business it’s
usually about location, but I’ve bucked that trend
and opened up somewhere that’s ‘me’.”
Coming up with a name was as simple as bringing a
slice of home to Lichfield.
“Being in hospitality, every second person will ask
me about my accent and how I ended up here, so I
thought if I named the cafe Melbourne, it eradicated
one question,” laugh Debs.
As a coffee connoisseur, Debs only deals with the best
in the business. Her beans come from Union, which
has been named the best coffee roaster in Europe,
and Debs even had to be interviewed to be allowed
to sell the coffee.
“A lot of people think Union are a big company
because of their accolades, and because they’ve
seen Union coffee in a lot of places but they’re not.
They’re a team of just 60 people, which
THE VITAL INGREDIENT FOR
DEBS’ TURMERIC LATTES is tiny in the grand scheme of things,”
she explains.
“Union are direct trade, they care
about their farmers and they share
their farmers’ stories with you, which is
amazing. And I know the price they pay
is sometimes four or five times as much
as another roaster might pay. They’re
great company, and so consistent; their
coffee is really good.
“There are very few specialty coffee
dealers; most sell commodity coffee,
which is a real shame, especially when
you’ve seen the farmers hand-pick the
beans.”
All of Debs’ coffee is graded by the
Specialty Coffee Association of Europe;
she only sells coffee which has been graded and
which is direct trade.
“My highest coffee is graded at 87 on the SCAE
scale, which is the highest to go through a coffee
machine in Lichfield,” Debs explains.
“I’ve been approached by numerous roasters to sell
their coffee, but it’s not graded or it’s not direct trade,
and that just doesn’t work for me.”
Debs’ social conscience extends beyond the
coffee she serves; all of the cups are completely
compostable, and there’s not a plastic straw in sight.
THE DELICIOUS
LICHFIELD CRUFFIN
“There are 688,000 non-recyclable cups used by one
British coffee chain every day, which all go straight to
landfill,” explains Debs. “We were determined not to
add to that.”
Another of the major by-products of the coffee
business is used coffee grounds, and Debs has found
a company which puts these to good use. Optiat
create innovative face and body scrubs from the used
coffee grounds, and Debs sells these alongside her
espressos and lattes.
“It’s not something you’d typically find stocked in a
cafe but it’s a great product,” she says. “We found
them at the London Coffee Festival and we use it
at home. We’re fortunate that we can sell whatever
products we like, and it’s something which fits in with
our ethos.”
Debs’ innovative menu is a nod to both the
forefathers of coffee and to her Aussie roots.
“I used to be a very strict trainer in
the Italian style of coffee-making;
knowing the Italians invented the
espresso back in 1901 I wanted to
pay homage to them, and I alway
will. Everything on the menu is
Italian.
“But six months ago I went back to
Melbourne on a coffee journey to
discover what was happening out
there. They say that England is a
good ten to 15 years behind the rest
of the world when it comes to coffee
innovation so I thought I could
get a bit of a jump on that and get
ahead.”
Debs was greeted by menus dominated
by turmeric, beetroot and rainbow
lattes. And while rainbow - created
using elaborate dye work - was a step
too far, beetroot and turmeric became
the cornerstones of the Melbourne in
Lichfield menu.
“Nothing says Australia like a beetroot
latte, and the turmeric latte was huge, so
I thought I’d bring those to Lichfield,”
says Debs.
“Before I opened everyone questioned
whether Lichfield was ready for me, but
the quirkiness is evolving because people
are responding to it. I sell dozens of
beetroot lattes every day, and turmeric is
our third biggest seller.
“And Lichfield is a huge city of espresso
drinkers; I’ve never known as many
people ordering espresso. And they know what they
want; people want to know what bean I’m using and
they want a 30ml extraction for a certain amount of
time. They’re educated, and I’m blown away.”
Debs’ cafe is bringing together a new band of
Lichfield coffee lovers; people who may not otherwise
ever cross paths but who now come together day
after day, drawn down the alley by their mutual
appreciation for a proper cup of coffee.
“For me, coffee is about connecting,” says Debs.
“When I was growing up it was about me being with
my friends and now it’s all about me being able to sit
and chat with customers. I’m a caffeine dealer and a
milk pusher!”
The best of local
IT’S A CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS LOCAL AT LICHFIELD’S AWARD-
WINNING POM’S KITCHEN, AS AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS
In recent years, Lichfield seems to be undergoing
something of a renaissance as a destination for foodies.
The city’s annual food festival is a huge celebration of
all things tasty, while the area is a haven for fantastic
suppliers and makers. At the heart of the independent
food scene is Bird Street favourite Pom’s Kitchen, which
opened in 2015.
The restaurant has recently undergone a stylish
makeover, and were were delighted to be invited along
to experience the new look and sample the new menu.
Pom’s is a champion of fresh, seasonal produce and
local suppliers; as soon as you walk in you can’t miss the
wall which rightly shouts about their local credentials
and support for independent businesses. They even go
as far as to offer restaurant vouchers for anyone who
wants to bring in their own homegrown fruit and veg.
We were greeted by a friendly waitress and shown to a
table with a great view of the open kitchen, where we
could watch the chefs work their magic.
First order of the evening was something to sip on while
we debated dinner options. My husband plumped for
a Longhorn IPA from Warwickshire-based brewers
Purity, while I perused the cocktail menu.
That was, until I happened upon the gin selection.
Lichfield-based Fifth Spire is the house
speciality gin and is offered as its own
‘perfect serve’ with Fever Tree tonic
and a wedge of grapefruit as well as is a
variety of specially-created cocktails. It’s a
personal favourite, and my gin of choice at
home, so I delved a bit deeper through the
fantastic array of gins on offer.
For any gin fan, Pom’s gin plank - which
offers three spirits and one Fever Tree
mixer, plus garnishes tailored to each
selection, for a very reasonable £12 - is a
must. I opted for the Nelsons Rhubarb and
Custard, as well as the rather potent and
juniper-rich Sheep’s Eye and the berryheavy
Sharish Blue Magic, as well as a
second bottle of tonic to see me through
the evening. It’s a great way to try some of
the new and more unusual gins which features on Pom’s
menu.
Our eyes were immediately drawn to the sharing
platters, and we opted for the Pig Board to start our
evening’s feast. This selection of Forest Pig cured
meats includes coppa, chorizo and salami, garnished
with pickles, parmesan, rocket and Bore St Bakery
sourdough with oil and aged balsamic for dipping.
The platter was perfectly proportioned, offering a
tasty selection of meaty goodies and some lovely
accompaniments, including bread that was so good we
fought over the last piece.
34

Moving onto the main event and my husband was
keen to try the much-lauded Russell’s of Shenstone
steak, which comes from some of the best free-range
farms in Staffordshire and is aged for 28 days to ensure
a quality cut. He opted for the 8oz fillet, priced £24,
which is served with slow roasted tomatoes, portobello
mushroom, onion rings, chunky chips and classic
béarnaise sauce. Not being a huge fan of béarnaise, he
asked if they were able to whip up a blue cheese sauce
instead. It’s not on the menu but the chefs were happy
to oblige.
The steak was, he assured me, a thing of beauty.
Cooked a perfect blue with just a sear on the outside, it
was succulent, tender and full of flavour - a real quality
piece of meat. The chips were fluffy and golden, with
a crisp coating, and perfect for dipping into the rich
sauce. One very happy diner indeed.
I’d been looking at the fish dishes - the huge classic fish
and chips looked amazing, while the fillet of sea bream
served with crushed new potatoes, tenderstem broccoli
and a cream sauce was also tempting. But it was the
Pom’s signature hanging kebabs which won the day.
These impressive kebabs of either marinated chicken
breast, king prawn or grilled halloumi are a hugely
popular option it seems - almost every single table that
evening had at least one as part of their order.
And when it arrived it was easy to see why. My king
prawns, priced £15, were enormous, and perfectly
cooked to retain their sweet, juicy flavour. With the
shells still on they can be a little messy, but it’s well
worth the effort for the delicious reward. The kebabs
also include roasted veg, as well as pitta bread, skin-on
fries, tzatziki and chilli jam to create a seriously hearty
meal.
Since I’d been torn between the king
prawn and halloumi kebabs, we also
ordered a portion of halloumi bites,
priced £4, to satisfy the craving for
cheese. These were incredibly moreish
and we had no trouble polishing off the
lot. The accompanying sweet chilli jam
was deliciously spicy, and the deep-fried
halloumi was wonderfully firm without
any hint of the notorious squeakiness.
After such a satisfying feast, I sadly had
to decline the offer of dessert. Instead
I settled for a Pom’s espresso martini
made with Fifth Spire cold brew coffee
liqueur, which was the perfect way to
end a delightful dinner.
My husband, however, had no such
trouble finding room for a little sweet
something. His tuck shop cheesecake,
priced £6.50, was a fun twist on a classic vanilla
cheesecake, with an Oreo biscuit base and thick,
creamy vanilla layer topped with an array of old-school
sweets, served with ice cream, chocolate sauce and a
whole Oreo for good measure.
The cheesecake tasted just as good as it looked, and
he delighted in every single sweet treat, from the jelly
strawberry to the cola bottles and strawberry laces, as
well as the obligatory lollipop. It put a huge smile on his
face, just as good food should.
And that’s what Pom’s Kitchen is about; great food,
using great produce and supporting local suppliers, all
coupled with exceptional service. As we headed back
into the brisk autumnal night we reflected on what
was not only a fantastic meal, but a fantastic dining
experience. When it comes to quality and value, Pom’s
Kitchen certainly delivers.
T R AV E L
Oh, Vienna!
KIRSTY TAYLOR FROM RB COLLECTION TRANSPORTS US TO AUSTRIA’S CULTURALLY RICH CAPITAL CITY
WHERE SHE EXPERIENCED CLASSIC MUSIC IN ITS HEARTLAND, TOURED ARCHITECTURE THROUGH THE
AGES AND SAMPLED THE LOCAL SUGARY DELIGHTS
BELVEDERE PALACE
When I think of Vienna, my mind automatically
springs to images of elegant waltzes and grand
balls, scenic Christmas markets and an abundance
of art and culture. Over the past weekend, I have
discovered that the magnificent city of Vienna has all
of these things, and so much more.
In just two hours, I was transported from a rainy
morning in England, to the most beautiful blue
skies and warm sunshine of Vienna. I caught a
brief glimpse of what I was to expect from the city
at the airport, which was modern and efficient, and
within 20 minutes I had arrived into the city centre.
The Ringstrasse (or ring road) is a grand boulevard
which circles around the entire old town, and it is
here where you will find the most elegant hotels and
buildings. The city walls, which were originally built
in the 13th century, once stood here, and after they
were dismantled in the mid-19th century, the now-
UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ringstrasse
was born.
Upon arrival in Vienna, and throughout my entire
stay, my eyes didn’t know where to look first as they
were constantly spoilt for choice with visions of the
most beautiful and historical architecture I have
ever seen. The city is beautifully infused with both
modern and classical buildings, including Baroque,
Renaissance and Gothic structures, and with every
footstep within every district, the sights never failed
to impress. I was constantly astounded by the sheer
beauty and grand splendour of my surroundings.
Perhaps the most prominent sight which can be
seen from the majority of the city, is the impressive
and famous St Stephen’s Cathedral – the symbol of
Vienna. Construction of the cathedral commenced
in the 12th century, and it is today considered to be
the most important Gothic structure in Austria. For
those energetic enough, the most magnificent view of
the whole of Vienna can be seen after climbing 343
steps to the tower room – although I have been told
on good authority from my extremely knowledgeable
THE STUNNING NATURAL
HISTORY MUSEUM
and humorous guide for the weekend Inge, that the
north tower actually houses a lift if you don’t fancy
having aching legs!
As there is an overwhelming amount of history and
culture in Vienna, I would definitely recommend a
guide for at least part of your stay. RB Collection can
arrange private guided tours and walks for you, and
after experiencing this for myself, I can honestly say
that I have learnt so much and seen so many places
that I would have never been able to discover by
myself. It was also a great way to beat the crowds at
museums, and having a local Viennese guide’s insider
knowledge was invaluable.
There is an abundance of museums and galleries
to visit during a stay in Vienna, and choosing
the most suitable ones in a short space of time
can be a daunting task. The most popular two
which our clients enjoy are the Leopold Museum
and the Kunsthistorische Museum (art history
museum). A Masterticket, which we can purchase
for you, covers both venues and is a great way to
experience both the old and the new in Viennese
and Austrian art.
The Leopold Museum is located in one of the
world’s largest complexes for modern art and
culture, and houses more than 5,000 exhibits
including works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele
and Richard Gerstl. The building itself is
extremely modern and functional in design, with
natural light pouring into the exhibition rooms,
so that visitors can experience the works of art in
the same way that the artist originally did whilst
creating them. In contrast, the Kunsthistorische
Museum is housed in the most elegant and
classical style of buildings on the Ringstrasse, and
is a mirror image of the Natural History Museum
which is located
directly opposite. The
building opened in
1891 and took 20 years
to complete. I was
blown away by both the
exterior and interior
of the museum, and
that was before I had
even seen any works
of art! Originally built
under Emperor Franz
Josef to house the
Imperial collections,
the Kunsthistorisches
museum is now home
to famous works by
Rubens, Rembrandt,
Raphael and Vermeer,
and also has the largest
collection of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. As
there is so much to see and discover here, it is again
well worth having the valuable knowledge of a guide,
either as part of a group or privately.
If you’re looking for somewhere to take a break from
sightseeing for an hour or two, then why not do as
the Viennese do and head to one of the city’s famous
coffee houses? I discovered that the Viennese are as
passionate about coffee as the Italians, and it is quite
normal to frequent the same coffee house on a daily
basis for hours at a time – and only buy one cup of
coffee!
45

In years gone by, locals would have the same
seat every day, maybe have a coffee at 2pm,
meet friends to chat or play bridge, and leave at
10pm. Some people even used to have their mail
delivered to them at the coffee house as they
were there more often than their own home!
This is a tradition that has carried on until the
present day, and I was told that even now, you
will never be asked to leave a café or restaurant
in Vienna – you are welcome to stay there as
long as you would like to.
I had the most wonderful lunch at the
famous Café Demel, and even got to see the
confectioners at work and their final wonderful
creations. At more than 230 years old, Café
Demel is very popular with tourists from all over
the world, so this is one coffee house where you
may expect to wait for a table – however, in my
opinion, it is more than worth it! With so many
coffees to choose from, there is something for
everyone’s taste – a true coffee lovers’ paradise.
My personal favourite was the kaffe melange –
quite similar to a cappuccino and truly delicious.
For a culinary experience with a difference, how
about breakfast, lunch or dinner aboard your
own private carriage on a giant Ferris wheel
from the 1890s? With 360 degree views of the
whole of the city, I did just this on a wonderful,
sunny Saturday afternoon. Although maybe not
for the faint-hearted, it is a memory that will
stay with me forever, and an experience I would
highly recommend to anyone visiting Vienna.
Vienna is renowned for being the music
capital of the world, and no visit here is complete
without sampling a concert, opera or ballet. Over
the years, Vienna has been home to the likes of
Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Haydn (to name
but a few), and you will find that there is always a
concert of some kind taking place in the city. I was
fortunate enough to experience a Mozart concert
by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and was
A STATUE OF MOZART
immediately transported back in time. Upon their
entrance to the stage, all musicians were dressed in
traditional attire which only added to the ambience
at the impressive venue of Musikverein. Even if you
are not a music lover, a concert such as this is not to
be missed during your stay in Vienna – it truly was
magnificent.
Being one of the leading opera houses in the world,
the most outstanding venue to enjoy an opera or
ballet is most definitely the Wiener
Straatsoper (Vienna State Opera
House). Originally opening its
doors in 1869, it truly is a most
impressive piece of architecture,
both externally and internally.
Events taking place here sell out
very quickly indeed, so it is highly
recommended to pre-book any
tickets with us before you travel.
During my stay, a performance
of La Boheme was taking place
at the Opera House. What truly
captured my heart, was that a
AN IMPRESSIVE VIEW
FROM THE PRATER PARK
FERRIS WHEEL

giant screen had been erected on the side of the
building, allowing everyone to enjoy the spectacular
performance in the mild autumnal evening. What a
fantastic way to spend an evening, with friends and
loved ones in the open air, experiencing the heart of
Vienna at its very best.
If you would prefer to sample the opera in a more
private and exquisite manner, then the most perfect
way to do this would be to book into the stunning
Hotel Bristol which is located directly opposite the
Wiener Straatsoper. The opera suites have the most
unique location surrounded by classical opulence
– just imagine opening the French doors, allowing
the evening air to flood in, dining at a beautifully
set private dinner table in the privacy of your own
suite, and relaxing throughout an opera performance
being projected upon the side of one of the most
beautiful buildings in the city. Most definitely a
truly unique experience and one which would be
remembered for years to come.
I merely scratched the surface of Vienna during my
two-night stay, but I can honestly say I have learnt
so much, witnessed the most amazing architecture,
enjoyed wonderful music, eaten delicious food and
admired works of art in all of their magnificent
glory. Vienna truly is a city for all five senses, and I
look forward to arranging your trip to Austria’s great
capital city.
The home of original art
A SUTTON COLDFIELD ART GALLERY IS BRINGING THE VERY BEST OF BRITISH
CONTEMPORARY ART TO THE MIDLANDS, AS AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS - AND YOU
COULD WIN £150 TO SPEND ON A PIECE OF YOUR CHOICE
ARTIFEX IS A TREASURE
TROVE OF CONTEMPORARY
BRITISH ARTS
Nestled away at the Mitchells exclusive shopping
centre on the outskirts of Sutton Coldfield lies an
Aladdin’s cave for art lovers.
But Artifex is so much more than an art gallery; it’s a
treasure trove of the very best contemporary arts and
crafts from a wide selection of independent British
designers and makers. From sparkling jewellery to
dainty ceramics, statement furniture pieces to eyecatching
paintings, it really is a fascinating place to
explore.
“I’m told that we’re the biggest independent gallery
in Britain,” says Nigel Bates, who co-owns the gallery
with business partner Ross Fenn.
At some 3,000 square foot, the space is indeed
impressive. When you walk in you are greeted by
cases of beautiful jewellery, which has been crafted
by some of the country’s most talented designers.
Venture a little further and there’s an area devoted to
glass and ceramics, while at the rear of the gallery is
a furniture showroom housing striking tables, chairs,
sideboards and other decorative pieces. The walls are
adorned with elaborate mirrors, stunning sculptures
and contemporary paintings.
And that’s just downstairs.
The spacious first floor gallery area is devoted to
original paintings, and showcases small groups of
artwork from around 18 different artists at any one
time.
“What we do is fairly unique,” says Nigel. “All of our
artist are British, and many of them are local too. We
sell British-made work which is individual, not massproduced,
and all of our artwork is original, we don’t
sell prints.
‘People imagine that original pieces of art will cost
thousands of pounds, but that’s not always the case
at all. An original can cost less than a print in many
cases but at least you know some love and care has
gone into it.
There is also a dedicated exhibition space, where
the gallery holds regular exhibitions of works from
a variety of artists. The latest artist to be featured
is ceramicist Mark Smith, who creates scenic wall
plaques and quirky sculptures inspired by the sea and
coastline.
One of the more unusual recent exhibitions
showcased the work of sculptor Shaun Gagg,
48

who creates incredible pieces by painstakingly
bending and welding together hundreds - or
sometimes thousands - of nails, coins or keys. The
centrepiece of the exhibition, titled The Sorrows
of Steel, was a breathtaking, lifesize sculpture of
Jesus Christ composed of more than 15,000 nails
welded together, while pieces including a stunning,
contemporary rocking chair made from copper two
pence coins are still on display in the ground floor
furniture gallery.
“It’s very simple; if one of us likes it and it’s original,
we’ll give it a go,” says Nigel. “We do have different
tastes and we don’t always agree but that helps to
keep things fresh. Art is very subjective; sometimes
things we’re unsure about sell really well, and
sometimes we love things but no-one else does!
“We’ve got artists from every age group, from people
who are just starting out at college to people like
Roy Abell, who’s 85 and was at college with David
Hockney.”
Birmingham-born Roy Abell was head of the
painting school at Birmingham College of Art and
is a notable landscape painter, while his oils lean
towards the more abstract. Other local artists with
work currently on display include Rachel Tighe,
who has a studio in Tamworth where she creates
interesting and evolving art based on street scenes
and cityscapes inspired by her travels, and Louise
Rawlings, whose walks through Sutton Park inspire
her whimsical paintings.
Nigel himself is an artist, whose mixed-media work
also adorns the gallery walls.
“I’ve always dabbled, and I’ve just progressed over
the years,” says Nigel. “My latest works were inspired
ARTIFEX OWNERS NIGEL
BATES AND ROSS FENN
A SHAUN GAGG
COIN SCULPTURE
by my wife who wanted a piece for the bathroom
but didn’t want any colour. They’re done on two
sheets of glass using a resin which moves from a
liquid to a solid state.
“Other pieces are done using a different type of resin
and dropping other paints and inks into it to create a
sense of depth. Most of my work is happy accidents;
I just play around and work with the different
mediums to see what happens.”
Artifex was established in 1993 as a showcase for art
and design in the West Midlands, and celebrates 25
years in business next year.
Nigel and Ross were both working as greengrocers
and shared a passion for the arts when a conversation
in the pub sparked an idea which inspired a complete
change of direction for the duo.
“Ross and I were both interested in the arts, and we
bought things, but there wasn’t a gallery in the area,”
explains Nigel.
“The centre had just opened and a tiny unit was
available so we did some research. I got more
interested in the idea so I packed my job in and
decided to make a proper go if it. We said that if we
made a penny we’d carry on and if we lost a penny
we’d give up.”
Happily, that first year was promising enough that
Nigel and Ross continued to follow their dream. And
it was after just three years that Artifex moved into
the spacious unit it now occupies.
“We were lucky enough to find a building we could
grow into,” says Nigel.
49

NIGEL BATES’ OWN WORK IS
ON DISPLAY IN THE GALLERY
Originally, the gallery focused on ceramics, glass and
smaller crafts, expanding to house original paintings
and, later, furniture as they developed more space.
One of Artifex’s unique services enables customers to
trial a piece of art in their homes before committing
to the purchase, to ensure it’s exactly what they
want. Nigel explains that they understand art needs
to work in the space it’s going to occupy, so like to
give customers the chance to make sure what they’re
buying is the right fit.
“People can try a piece in their home, live with it for
a few days and if it doesn’t work they can bring it
back,” he says.
Furniture is another growing aspect of the business;
customers can browse and buy from the sizeable
selection of one-off, contemporary pieces on show
from artists such as Shaun Gagg, Glimpze - a locallybased
designer of stunning chairs - and Kevin
Stamper, whose colourful mosaic-style furniture is
among Nigel’s personal favourites. They can also opt
for something a little different.
Competition
“We do furniture commissions which are totally
unique to each client,” says Nigel. “We have samples
of many different types of wood and will work with
the customer to create the perfect design.”
Artifex will then match the client to to the furniture
maker who best suits their requirements from their
extensive database of craftspeople.
“There’s no compromise with us; you get exactly
what you want. it ‘s a tradition which has gone on
for hundreds of years; in the 17th to 20th centuries
if you wanted the best of the day, you commissioned
it. And that’s what we’re trying to do, keep that
tradition going by selling the best of contemporary
makers.”
After nearly 25 years at the forefront of the
Midlands’ art scene. Artifex’s aim is simple; to make
original art accessible, and to support a wide variety
of artists and craftspeople.
“It’s opening people’s eyes up to what’s out there,”
says Nigel. “People come in here and see what we
have and find pieces they connect with, which are
unique, original and not mass-produced.
“Everything is made with love and passion by people
who really care about what they do.”
THE COAT IS THE CENTREPIECE OF YOUR WINTER WARDROBE, AND AN INVESTMENT PIECE
WHICH NEEDS TO SEE YOU RIGHT THROUGH UNTIL SPRING’S WARM DAYS ARRIVE, SO IT
PAYS TO CHOOSE WISELY SAYS AMY NORBURY
Coats play a starring role in the fashion landscape for
autumn and winter; it’s the item we end up wearing
the most throughout the season, and probably your
most-anticipated buy.
And with coats for every temperature and style this
season, it’s hard to pick just one to build your winter
wardrobe around. Whether you’re after a multitasking
marvel or a statement piece which will add
the wow factor to any outfit, there’s a cover-up out
there for you.
Your winter coat works seriously hard - both
practically and stylishly - and, as it will probably be
the piece that takes the most out of your budget, it
needs to earn its place. Comfortable enough to cosy
into, equally appropriate for the office as a night
on the tiles, big enough to accommodate autumnal
layers, as well as being able to bring any ensemble
together - the winter coat is a style superhero.
The chicest colour for coats for AW17 is white; forget
practical and sensible, the iciest of hues dominated
the catwalks at Burberry, Roksanda, Tory Burch
and Dries Van Noten, where classic shapes got
whitewashed to create stunningly simple, stylish
cover-ups. A perfect match for any outfit, white ticks
the fashion box - as long as you don’t mind the extra
dry-cleaning bills.
If white is a step too far, then pink is another hot
spot on the fashion landscape. From the palest hue,
dubbed ‘millennial pink’ to the boldest fuschia, pink
will definitely make an impact.
When it comes to shape, the trench coat is having
another moment in the fashion spotlight, with major
fashion houses like Céline, Maison Margiela, and
of course, Burberry, championed the classic shape
in their autumn winter collections. Heritage checks
also come into play, as well as neutral tones - invest in
quality and this is a style which should serve you well
for years to come.
If you’re after something a little more, well, snuggly,
then the trend for teddy bear-esque coats should fit
the bill nicely. Faux fur and shearling in voluminous
proportions will keep the chills at bay; the bigger, the
better.
Or keep it simple in a longline wool number - the
sleek, elegant lines are fuss-free, so add a twist with
colour pop and interesting patterns.
Here comes the bride
JILL HARTLEY, CO-OWNER AND DIRECTOR OF NERO E BIANCO EXCLUSIVE FASHION AND BRIDAL BOUTIQUE
AT BARTON MARINA, OFFERS HER TIPS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF SHOPPING FOR YOUR WEDDING DRESS
Shopping for your wedding dress is a momentous
occasion. Emotions can be heightened and there can
be many tears, but it’s one of the most important
stages in any bride-to-be’s wedding planning journey.
Our bridal boutique at Barton Marina is a hidden
gem; tucked away quietly just off the A38 at Barton
Turn, you’ll find a tranquil setting of wildlife, dog
walkers and coffee shops, as well as an independent
cinema and bistro pub – so you can really make a
day of it when you come to visit us.
On the ground floor of Nero e Bianco, you’ll find
casual shoes and accessories. Upstairs greets you with
ladieswear, and in a separated area of the store is our
bridal boutique, complete with other occasionwear fit
for mother-of-the-bride, among other guests.
We take great pride in being part of your special
journey and we have a dedicated bridal coordinator
to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Here are a few Frequently Asked Questions that can
give you a little bit of an insight into Nero e Bianco
Bridal before you pay us a visit…
“Should I make an appointment, or can I
just drop in if I’m passing by?”
We recommend you book an appointment with us,
so that our bridal coordinator can ensure she sets
aside enough time to cater to your needs on a oneto-one
basis. However, if you are passing by, do
feel free to stop by. If we don’t have a bride in store
at the time we will be more than happy to let you
browse our dresses with the view to booking a try-on
appointment in the future.
“What shall I wear to the appointment?”
If you already have your bridal underwear, we
suggest you bring that along to the appointment.
Nude or white briefs are recommended, however
don’t worry too much about a bra, as you will
most likely be taking it on and off throughout the
appointment. If you are anxious about getting
undressed in front of a member of staff, just let us
know and we will happily step outside of the
dressing room, and pop back in to fasten the dress.
closer to your goal before visiting us as dresses can
Please bear in mind that if we have to order in your
Peggy Prendergast, who hails from Tamworth, opened
and over the past 12 months has built up an exciting
business at the craft centre, situated on Weeford Road.
Peggy trained at North Warwickshire and Hinckley
With her own unique style, Peggy’s floral designs
flowers and add elements which are a bit different, like
feathers.
“I want to be quite bespoke and for people to be
able to spot my designs straight away, whether it be
wedding, funeral, seasonal or other occasional pieces.”
Peggy prides herself on offering a truly bespoke,
Life in the fast lane
M OTO R S
THIS MONTH J’AIME’S MOTORING CORRESPONDENT AND RESIDENT RACING DRIVER MARTIN PLOWMAN
HAS BEEN WORKING WITH THE GUYS AT RADICAL SPORTSCARS, REVIEWING THE NEW RADICAL SR-1
I’m often asked at the racetrack, how do I get into
racing? If, like many of us who have come to the
realisation that we are not going to become the next
Lewis Hamilton but still want to pretend to be like
him on the weekend at your local track, then I might
have the answer that you are looking for.
It has been 18 years since Radical Sportscars, based
in Peterborough, revolutionised the track car market.
Their formula is simple but effective; create trackinspired
cars delivering supercar performance for less
than half the budget. Well 18 years down the line I
have finally had a chance to test drive their entrylevel
SR-1 car. And it didn’t disappoint…
I’m not about to bore you with a traditional car
review with benchmark practicality, boot space, fuel
economy, all of those fun school-run car reviews will
come later on over the next year! I am also not one
for regurgitating the brochure and claiming it as a
review. To be honest and true to myself, I put the
Radical through its paces as if I were advising one
of my clients on which is the best track car to buy for
their money.
THE TECHNICAL STUFF
The SR-1 uses a 1340cc Suzuki
motorbike engine married to a Quaife
six-speed sequential gearbox with paddleshifters
on the steering wheel. Despite its
small engine size, it sounds amazing - as
you would expect from most Japanese
motorbike engines - and the beauty of
paddle-shift gearbox is that you only
need to use the clutch to select first gear
and when starting or stopping. To change
gear, you simply pull on the paddles
behind the steering wheel; right paddle to
shift up, and left paddle to downshift, just
like on a playstation; it’s that simple!
As far as entry level racing cars go
a 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds is not too
shabby and definitely on par with its
rivals like the Ariel Atom and Caterham
Supersport. What really sets this car apart from
its competition is just how much grip this car has
to offer. The amount of downforce that the SR1
generates is incredible. In some high-speed corners
you can easily pull over 2.5g! The thing about
downforce cars is that the faster you go the more
downforce the car will produce, meaning the more
grip you will have; its cyclical. Naturally you will
eventually find the absolute limit of the grip from the
tyre, but nine times out of ten, the limiting factor will
be the squishy bit between the seat and the steering
excellent introduction into
racing. Plus, the beauty of
Radical is that when you are
ready to progress to the next
level, they operate a buyback
scheme to assist in trading up, as
an added bonus these cars hold
their value and you can expect to
re-sell your SR-1 for around the
£30,000 mark after a season or
two of hard racing! This policy
also means that they have an
available supply of used cars if
you wanted to get into a radical
but don’t have the full budget.
wheel and not the car! Iconic tracks like Silverstone
and Spa are the perfect places where this car will
really thrive and will lap faster than virtually any
supercar.
Straight out of the box, I was amazed at how easy
the car felt to drive. It is confidence inspiring and
within two or three laps I felt comfortable enough to
start pushing the car to its very limit knowing that
it wasn’t going to hurt me. The car gave me great
feedback and would let me know when I was pushing
over the limit. The grip lets go progressively, making
it easy enough to correct any slide and get back to
business. Some cars simply snap when pushed too
hard, but the SR-1 is very forgiving.
Being rear wheel drive, it is tremendous fun to drive;
the punchy engine will allow the back end to step out
too in low speed corners, which is where the pleasure
of the Radical comes in. It is a car that can be driven
hard.
ALTERNATIVES
At this price, there is really
only one car that comes close
to the thrill of driving an SR-
1; the Ariel Atom, a great car in its own right but is
much more of a derivative of a road car than the
Radical SR-1. If you want something that is even
more forgiving then the Atom is an excellent choice;
however that is where the beauty of the Radical
comes in as the more you master the car, the more
you get out of it, it really grows with your driving
ability.
CONCLUSION
The Radical SR-1 is a perfect place to launch your
budding racing career …and for only £40,000 it’s
the closest you will ever get to feeling what it’s like to
be Lewis Hamilton.
A GATEWAY TO RACING
The great thing about the Radical SR-1 is that it
will work perfectly as a stand-alone track day car for
those interested in a track toy. However, at £40,000
plus VAT, these cars are aimed at a smaller market
who can justify this on a track car for occasional use.
What makes much more sense is for an extra £4,500
you get the car and an entry into a seven-race
Radical SR-1 Championship; they even give you a
free race suit, offer technical support, driver coaching
and literally everything you need to get into racing.
I can think of few other championships that deliver
so much bang for your buck and give such an
