Welcome to J’AIME
On Monday, September 19, 2022, the UK came
together to honour our late Queen, Elizabeth II, on her
final journey home to Windsor Castle, to be reunited
with her beloved husband Philip. It was an emotional
day for many, filled with all of the incredible pomp and
ceremony one would expect from a State funeral for a
monarch who has served her country for the past 70
years. Over those years, the Queen made many visits
here to the Midlands, and photographer Tony Swift has
been lucky enough to capture many of these occasions
on camera; he shares some of his favourite Royal visit
memories with us.
We’ve got a feast in store for you this month, as we check
out a few new Midlands foodie ventures. We paid a visit
to Sutton Coldfield’s newest dining spot, Bakehouse by
Baked In Brick, to sample their street food menu, while
at the other end of the foodie spectrum, we experienced
fine dining at home thanks to Stoke chef Cris Cohen’s
Feasted. Cris opens up his Chef ’s Table at Spode Works
this month, where just eight lucky diners each night will
be able to sample a seasonal, local 11-course tasting
menu. And if his Feast at Home offering is anything to
go by, this is sure to be one of the hottest tickets around.
Elsewhere, we go behind the scenes at Birmingham
Comedy Festival with festival director Dave Freak to
discover more about one of the UK’s longest-running
comedy festivals, and catch up with self-styled German
comedy ambassador Henning Wehn ahead of his festival
shows.
If you enjoy what you read in this issue, then why not
help us to spread the word? As well as being delivered
directly to homes in selected postcodes across the
Royal visits remembered
DURING HER INCREDIBLE 70-YEAR REIGN, QUEEN ELIZABETH II WAS NO STRANGER TO THE
MIDLANDS, DRAWING CROWDS OF WELL-WISHERS ON HER MANY ROYAL VISITS. MIDLANDS
PHOTOGRAPHER TONY SWIFT TAKES A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF HIS FAVOURITE MOMENTS
CAPTURING OUR BELOVED LATE MONARCH ON CAMERA
It was with
poignant pomp and
incredible ceremony
that, on September
19, Queen
Elizabeth II made
her final journey
from Westminster
Hall to Westminster
Abbey, then past
the royal residence
of Buckingham
Palace and onwards
to Windsor Castle,
in a televised State
funeral watched by
millions across the
globe.
It was a fitting end
to a glorious 70-year
reign, the likes of
which none of us
here now will ever see again.
THE QUEEN VISITING THE
NATIONAL MEMORIAL
ARBORETUM AT
ALREWAS IN 2016
In her televised 21st birthday speech on April 21,
1947, the then-Princess Elizabeth dedicated herself
to a life serving the people of the United Kingdom
and the Commonwealth, famously saying: “I declare
before you all that my whole life whether it be long
or short shall be devoted to your service and the
service of our great imperial family to which we all
belong.”
And she held true to her word, ruling for longer than
any other monarch in British history and remaining
active in her royal duties until the very end.
While official business took her all over the world,
she was also a regular visitor to all corners of the
UK. Over the years, photographer Tony Swift was
tasked with capturing the Queen’s visits around the
Midlands; from Lichfield Cathedral to Shugborough,
the National Memorial Arboretum to walkabouts
around Birmingham, Midlanders turned out in force
to welcome the monarch wherever she went.
She was, Tony remembers, a pleasure to photograph,
always full of smiles and waves for the public.
And Tony has a particularly fond memory of his last
royal visit, where he was invited to take photos of the
Queen’s visit to the National Memorial Arboretum
in Alrewas in 2016. Tony says: “I was waiting with
other togs for her to come and sign the visitors book
at the National Arboretum in Alrewas. I had two
cameras, one with a long lens on my left shoulder. All
of a sudden, my camera was hit by something nearly
pulling it off my shoulder.
“It was the Queen who hit me, I suspect, with her
famous handbag… she looked around at me with a
smile and a twinkle in her eye and said ‘Oops’. It’s
something I will never forget. Good job I didn’t shout
at ‘that somebody’ for being clumsy... I would have
been carted off to the Tower!”
Playing for laughs
ONE OF THE UK’S LONGEST-RUNNING COMEDY FESTIVALS, BIRMINGHAM COMEDY
FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR A LAUGHTER-PACKED STINT THIS MONTH. AMY NORBURY
CAUGHT UP WITH FESTIVAL DIRECTOR DAVE FREAK AND SELF-STYLED GERMAN
COMEDY AMBASSADOR HENNING WEHN TO FIND OUT MORE
ENJOY IMPROV WITH A LITERARY
FLAVOUR FROM AUSTENTATIOUS
The multi award-winning Birmingham Comedy
Festival returns this month with more than 80
performances over 10 mirth-filled days from Friday,
October 7 to Sunday, October 16. With stand-up
comedy, improv, theatre, podcasts, magic, and more
on offer, they’re plenty to get excited about.
Now in its 21st year, the annual extravaganza shines
a light on Birmingham’s vibrant - and often unsung
- comedy scene, with a line-up that combines bigname
acts with the best the Midlands has to offer.
Festival founder and director Dave Freak says this
year’s festival has been a year in the making.
“We confirm the dates over a year in advance but
most of the graft is in the spring, six months or so
before the festival starts,” he explains. “There’s big
shows - including appearances from BGT’s Axel
Blake and Henning Wehn, plus West End musical
Sister Act - but also loads of great acts you may not
know, like Helen Bauer, Troy Hawke, and some of
the very best acts from the West Midlands.”
After two years of being hampered by Covid
restrictions, 2022’s festival is back to full strength.
“The live, in-the-room festival didn’t happen in 2020,
which was a shame,” says Dave. “But we kept the
flag flying with some online activities which included
streamed performances, a sketch show, and podcasts.
It was a lovely thing, and featured contributions from
Barbara Nice, Toyah, The Nightingales, Josh Pugh,
Foka Wolf and Tat Vision, Clinton Baptiste, James
Cook, Jumprov, and more. Black Country musician
Dan Whitehouse also composed a new soundtrack to
a Charlie Chaplin film.
“We had planned a mini-festival in the spring of
2021 to mark our official 20th anniversary - as our
very first festival took place in the spring of 2001.
But we had to cancel it due to Covid lockdowns.
However, we were very much back live in October
2021 with an amazing festival: Russell Brand,
8
www.jaimemagazine.com

Tailenders, Chris Ramsey, Jenny
Eclair, Max Fosh, Mark Steel... and
the response from audiences was
amazing.”
The festival launches with the
Birmingham Comedy Festival
Breaking Talent Award 2022 at The
Glee Club on October 7, which sees
five of the best new and emerging
comics from the West Midlands take
to the stage. This year’s nominees
are Richard Dadd, Tal Davies, Jules
O’Brian, Lovell Smith and Hannah
Weetman.
“It’s a great night,” says Dave.
“Previous winners and participants
include Celya AB, Josh Pugh, Gary
Powndland, Lindsey Santoro, and
Danny Clives. Some of them have
gone on to gig with people like Joe
Lycett, Guz Khan and The Guilty
Feminist, pick up national comedy
award nods, and make their way onto TV.
“We have a panel of comedy professionals who keep
an eye on what’s happening over the last 12 months,
and they make recommendations. We then invite
some of those acts to participate in the Breaking
Talent Award, so it’s not something anyone can
enter. The Award is also only open to acts from
Birmingham and the West Midlands, and was set up
with the sole intention of helping comedians from
the region gain exposure, to help give them a stepup.
The West Midlands comedy scene is very strong.
Come and see our Breaking Talent Award and find
out for yourself. You’ll be impressed.”
With a mixed bag of acts, the festival caters to a huge
variety of audience tastes.
“There’s so many different types of comedy,” says
Dave. “If you like musical comedies, then Sister Act
is for you; if you prefer slapstick, then you shouldn’t
miss our Laurel and Hardy screenings; if you prefer
your comedy with a social/political leaning, try Tom
Mayhew; or if you like improvisation, then there’s
Austentatious, the improvised Jane Austen novel
featuring some of the UK’s best improvisers, plus
Brum’s own Jumprov, Mary Flanigan and more.
“Check out the line up and take a punt - there’s lots
of free stuff too, including our two Free Half-Dayers,
featuring 18 acts across successive Sundays on
October 9 and 16 at The Victoria and Cherry Reds,
in the city centre. You can see as many shows as you
like.”
BRUM IMPROV GROUP JUMPROV!
COME TO THE HIPPODROME ON
OCTOBER 8
The festival has been running for 21 years, starting
life as a way to bring Birmingham’s comedy scene
together.
“There were loads of small unconnected comedy
nights and clubs around the city that had some
pretty big names on, but unless you lived nearby, you
probably didn’t know about them,” says Dave. “A
festival seemed like a good way to show the city what
was going on. It was a show of strength, if you will.
And that first festival, admits Dave, was far bigger
than anyone really anticipated, with big names
including Sean Lock, Frankie Boyle, Peter Kay, Reg
D Hunter, Sandi Toksvig, Kathy Burke and more on
the bill.
“Getting it off the ground was a feat, as was winning
several What’s On Readers’ Awards for Best Arts
Festival, as there’s so much competition now,” says
Dave.
“Launching the Breaking Talent Award in 2014
was so nice. Bringing radio’s The Goon Show and a
previously lost Tony Hancock script to the stage were
both great - especially selling out The British Library
in London with The Lost Hancocks.
“But the fact that the festival is totally unfunded and
volunteer-led, and is still going, and still attracting
attention - around 17,000 attended the 2021 festival -
is pretty remarkable too.”
Birmingham Comedy Festival runs from
Friday, October 7 to Sunday, October 16.
Five minutes with
Henning Wehn…
Self-styled German Comedy Ambassador
Henning Wehn brings his latest show, It’ll
All Come Out in the Wash, to Birmingham
Town Hall on October 7 and 8. After
moving to the UK 19 years ago to take
up a job in the marketing department
at Wycombe Wanderers Football Club,
Henning ditched sport for stand-up and
has since become a firm favourite on the
comedy circuit, and a regular on TV shows
including 8 Out of 10 Cats, Have I Got
News For You, and QI.
Tell us about your Birmingham Comedy
Festival show - for the uninitiated, what
can the audience expect?
An unbiased look at the Covid crisis. One
of the basic ideas is quite a novel one:
eating and exercise has a correlation to
one’s health.
You cover both Brexit and Covid quite
a bit in the show - looking back, these
were both crazy times so how does it
feel to be able to joke about them now?
Brexit and Covid are both fertile grounds
for humour. Admittedely they’re both old
hat at the moment. Now it’s all about the
death of a distant relative of mine and
the period of mourning and madness this
induced.
Are there any festival acts you’re
planning on seeing yourself or any you’d
recommend people check out?
The mixed bill show at the Town Hall on
Tuesday sounds good. Anything with Ninia
Benjamin in gets my support.
You arrived in the UK to work in
football - how did you end up in standup
comedy?
Wrong place, wrong time. In 2003.....what,
19 years ago?! Blimey, how time flies...
Why did you decide to stay in the UK?
Surely not for the weather...
Very simple. I misplaced my return ferry
ticket.
HENNING WEHN
As a German living and working in
the UK, what do you think of us Brits’
continuing obsession with German
stereotypes? Do Germans have any
similar ideas about Brits?
I don’t mind the odd bit of Germans this,
that and the other. But that obsession
is one way. In Germany there’s no
stereotypes about Brits as they’re not
important enough to the locals.
What have been the highlights of your
career so far?
The stand-out moment was travelling
across Europe for a fortnight with the
greatest footballer of all time: Lothar
Matthaus. We were filming short promos
for Courtyard Marriott in various European
capitals. And Matthaus’s opening gambit
during the contract negotiations allegedly
was: “I’m happy to do this but I’m not
staying in a Courtyard Marriott.” And
he never did. They say never meet your
heroes. Well, I’ve met mine and I loved
every second.
Henning Wehn: It’ll All Come Out in
Hall on October 7 and 8. Visit www.
A new community in Lichfield
PEGASUS, PART OF LIFESTORY GROUP, IS HOSTING AN INFORMATION DAY FOR
PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR LATEST COMMUNITY,
PEGASUS LICHFIELD BONDS
Guests are invited to join the
Pegasus team at one of two
sessions at either 10am or 2pm
on Friday, October 7 at The
Hub at St Mary’s in Lichfield.
Tea, coffee and cake will be on
hand as the team guide guests
through the development and
share a first look at the new
community.
Designed by Birmingham-based
architects Gould Singleton, the
£13.5m scheme will consist of
64 independent apartments for
people over 60 and will provide
a mixture of one and two-bedroom contemporary
apartments. Spread across three buildings, Lichfield
Bonds will also include a communal lounge, social
kitchen, patio seating areas and a communal garden.
The development broke ground in February this year
and is due to complete late 2023.
The stylish interiors include high-quality fittings,
large windows to flood the spaces with light, and
a private balcony or terrace with a number of the
apartments. Many will also enjoy stunning views
across Stowe Pool and the treasured landmark,
Lichfield Cathedral. This will be the second Pegasus
community in Lichfield, following the success of
award-winning Pegasus Chapter House, located on
Monks Close, which completed in 2016.
Mike Gill, regional managing director for Lifestory’s
Midlands and North division says: “Lichfield Bonds
forms part of our wider ambition to create more
much-needed high-quality homes for independent
later living across the UK. Our passion is to create
communities that enable and empower customers to
live their fullest lives, regardless of age, surrounded
by like-minded people. This translates to an
incredibly rich social life, a place to make new
friends, pursue new hobbies, and use all communal
facilities at your pleasure.
“Our later living apartments allow you to live on
your own terms, whether renting or buying, with
bespoke packages and offers to help accommodate
whatever moving stage customers find themselves
in, from part-exchange to complimentary moving
services.”
He continues: “With more than 350 enquiries for
the new homes so far, we’re confident that this is the
perfect space for those seeking their next chapter.
We are excited to host the local community and
prospective customers to discover more about what’s
on offer, whether they’re thinking of downsizing or
just want to see what we have planned.”
To complement the luxury homes, customers have
access to a shared lounge where they can enjoy a
glass of wine or a board game while chatting with
friends and neighbours, as well as a social kitchen to
prepare a snack or drink to enjoy out on the terrace.
Pegasus Lichfield Bonds also features a dedicated
Lifehost, who is embedded in the community and
takes care of the day-to-day running of the building
and grounds.
Apartments start from £300,000 to buy or
£1,700pcm to rent. To join us at the information
I N T E R I O R S
Think pink!
PINK is having something of a moment. The first sneak
peeks of the upcoming live-action Barbie movie, starring
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as every girl’s favourite
doll couple saw a plethora of pinks hit the catwalks over
summer. And October is traditionally the month where
we’re encouraged to ‘Wear it Pink’ for Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, so once again the hue is at the forefront
of our minds.
Pink has been a rising star in the interiors world in recent
years. No longer the preserve of baby girls’ nurseries,
pink in all its guises has been seen in every room of the
trendiest of homes. Blush pink has become a legitimate
neutral option, while shades of fuschia, cerise and
raspberry offer a statement accent to any contemporary
decor scheme.
Kitchens and bathrooms, especially, have seen an influx of
pink-inspired design, with tiles, paint and even baths, sinks
and cabinetry in various sweet hues blending perfectly
with accessories in luxe muted brass and gold, or modern
matte black.
Splashes of pink here and there will add a playful element
to your decor, while if you want to embrace all things
Barbie, incorporate a range of shades to maximise the
effect.
Time to
snuggle
ROARING fires, cuddly throws, flickering candlelight
- it’s what autumnal dreams are made of. The clocks
going back at the end of October signals the plunge into
the cooler months proper; the time when we all want to
retreat to the sanctuary of home, get cosy and stay put
until spring arrives.
And to make sure our spaces are as snug as possible, we’re
embracing an abundance of textures, from supersoft
throws, to fluffy cushions and deep pile rugs. A good stock
of blankets is a must as the temperatures start to drop;
store them neatly in a blanket box or put them on show to
add an extra layer of homely style to your space.
Even larger furniture pieces are getting in on the textural
trend; overstuffed sofas and chairs covered in thick
chenille, woolly boucle and even faux fur are perfect for
snuggling up on during those chilly autumnal evenings in
front of the fire.
The word on the street
says Bakehouse is a hit
BAKERY BY DAY, STREET FOOD MECCA BY NIGHT; SUTTON COLDFIELD’S NEWEST DINING DESTINATION
IS A VERY WELCOME ADDITION TO THE LOCAL FOODIE SCENE INDEED, SAYS AMY NORBURY
Sutton Coldfield’s latest restaurant offering is a tale
of two halves. By day, you’re greeted by the scent of
freshly-baked bread and the sight of patisserie piled
high as Bakehouse makes good on its name, while by
night it’s burgers, loaded fries and street food bites.
When it opened in August, Bakehouse marked
a homecoming for classically-trained chef Lee
DeSanges, who grew up in Wylde Green. Founder
of award-winning street food favourite Baked In
Brick, as well as its namesake restaurant in Digbeth’s
Custard Factory, Lee started his culinary journey
when he converted a classic Mini into a street food
powerhouse by putting a hand-built pizza oven in the
back and a barbecue under the bonnet.
And he hasn’t looked back.
After being named ‘Best Street Food Trader’ at
the British Street Food Awards in 2016, Lee went
one better to be crowned ‘Best of the Best’ at the
European Street Food Awards in Berlin a year later.
The Baked In Brick restaurant soon followed, as
well as a wholesale bakery in Erdington where Lee
and his team craft baguettes, loaves, sweet treats
and more. This latest chapter in the Baked In
Brick story saw Lee realise his dream of opening
a neighbourhood bakery and coffee shop in his
hometown.
Set in a former ironmongers’ shop and laid out
over three floors, Bakehouse has already garnered
rave reviews from locals who have turned up in
their droves to enjoy the baked goods, brunches and
lunchtime sandwiches.
But it is street food where Lee made his name, so,
when J’AIME was invited over to sample some of
Bakehouse’s offerings, it was obviously the street food
menu which drew our attention.
While Bakehouse is open from Wednesday to
Sunday, the restaurant is open for evening service
on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays only. When
26 www.jaimemagazine.com

we arrived for an early evening Friday booking,
there was already a steady stream of customers
eager to sample Lee’s street food offerings. Word of
Bakehouse’s foodie credentials is already well and
truly out, it seems.
We were shown to a table on the ground floor - with
a good view of the delicious bakery counter just to
whet our appetites - and ordered drinks while we
perused the menu. Bakehouse offers a lovely selection
of craft beers and ciders, wine and cocktails, and I
couldn’t resist the Aperol Spritz, £8.50, which was
deliciously zingy and refreshing.
The street food menu is small but perfectly formed,
and we could have happily ordered everything on
it. But not wanting to appear too gluttonous, we
opted for a couple of the small plates to start, before
digging into our burgers and loaded fries.
The lemon curry halloumi, £6.50, served with a
glorious sticky chilli jam was divine, the fragrant
curry spice adding a lovely depth of flavour to the
creamy halloumi. Our chorizo bites, £6.50, were
another winner; sticky with maple syrup glaze
and accompanied by a slice of delicately charred
sourdough, they packed a delightful punch.
Moving onto the main event, there was a choice of
four burger options; plain, cheese, bacon-cheese,
or the vegetarian halloumi option. Now, as much
as I love halloumi, when it comes to burgers there’s
no beating meat, so it had to be the Bangin’ Bacon
Cheese, £10, for both of us.
It was a behemoth of a burger; a sizeable 35-day
aged Aubrey Allen beef patty cooked over fire and
topped with a generous slab of home cure oaksmoked
Tamworth bacon, blow torched Monterey
Jack cheese, the obligatory burger veggies and a
duo of sauces (sticky BBQ and Baked In Brick’s
own burger sauce) all crammed into a homemade
(naturally!) brioche bun.
The meat was succulent and well seasoned, the
bacon a deliciously smoky treat, the bun a triumph;
in short, it was an exceedingly good burger indeed.
Somewhat ambitiously, we’d each ordered a portion
of dirty loaded fries; the buffalo fries, £5.95,
slathered in homemade hot sauce and adorned with
crumbled blue cheese, for him, and the sexy fries,
also £5.95, topped with homemade slaw, crispy
onions, sexy gochujang sauce and chives for me.
Hot, crisp and generously loaded with tasty toppings,
the fries were a worthy accompaniment to the
delicious burgers; a word of warning on the buffalo
fries, though - that hot sauce was seriously hot,
bringing a tear to the eye of even these couple of
hardened spice fans.
In hindsight, we could have easily shared a portion
of fries; the portions are deceptively generous, and
we were left defeated by the final few mouthfuls.
In lieu of a dessert menu to speak of, we finished off
with a caffeine hit; a flat white for him and a rather
delectable espresso martini, £9, for me. The coffee is
good; the cocktails even better.
Lee DeSanges’ dream with Bakehouse was to
create a friendly, neighbourhood bakery and eatery,
serving great food and great drinks, which would be
embraced wholeheartedly by the local community.
And if the initial reaction is anything to go by,
dreams really do come true.
A wizarding feast
A FINE DINING FEAST WITH A WIZARD TWIST MAKES FOR AN ENJOYABLE
ALTERNATIVE TO RESTAURANT DINING, AS AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS
When Covid-19 hit two years ago, grinding the
whole world to a halt, it was a time of unmitigated
disaster for the hospitality industry. Restaurants were
forced to close as we all retreated indoors, tables
left empty and food left unserved. Luckily, it didn’t
take long for a few ingenious souls to realise that
if punters couldn’t come into restaurants for their
foodie fix, then taking food directly to punters instead
was the way to go.
This was no ordinary takeaway movement, rather
the rise of fine dining in the comfort of your own
home. Freshly prepared in restaurant kitchens and
delivered chilled, ready to heat up and finish off,
this was cooking without compromise. And it was
a lifeline for many; a way to enjoy dining out while
staying in, and a link back to the way things were.
For Stoke-on-Trent chef Cris Cohen, his Feast at
Home concept was born out of necessity - but has
become so much more. The at-home idea was no
stranger to Cris; through his Feasted business, which
is based at Stoke’s Spode Works, he offered fine
dining dinner parties, cooking for clients in their
homes. With a passion, too, for education, Cris and
his team were also approached, pre-Covid, by Stokeon-Trent
College to offer a course in gastronomy
- thus enabling him to share his love of food and
knowledge of produce and technique with clients
and students alike.
While restaurants have reverted back to normal
operations, Cris has continued to develop his Feast at
Home concept, taking inspiration from the seasons
and locality, and working with local producers and
growers to bring these flavours to life and give a
sense of place. Offering a carefully curated box each
month, and with each box playing to a theme, Feast
at Home enables diners to find their inner chef and
connect with the food they eat in new ways.
For October, Cris has created a playful nod to
the month’s spooky reputation with a five-course
extravaganza dedicated to everyone’s favourite
wizard - Harry Potter. A Potter By Another Name
makes use of beautiful seasonal ingredients, with
MISO BAKED PUMPKIN
WAS THE SURPRISE HIT
OF THE EVENING
dishes offering quirky links back to JK Rowling’s
beloved novels and the films which were spawned
from them.
Our box arrived neatly packaged, with each element
clearly labelled, and instructions to store everything
in the fridge until ready to cook. So far, so simple.
The preparation instructions, which Cris
recommends you read through before starting, are
clear and concise, with ingredients for each dish
listed as per their labelling. With our ingredients
lined up in order and our pans on the hob, we were
ready to get stuck in.
The first job was to pop the miso-glazed pumpkin
wedges for the starter into the oven, before cracking
on with the intro dish; a pressed beef sourdough
sandwich with fermented carrot.
Preparing the sandwich was mostly an assembly job,
with the only cooking required being to toast the
strips of sourdough in a pan of melted butter until
golden and charred. With the sourdough ready, it
was time to delicately layer up the beef brisket and
fermented carrot and pop onto the plates before
decorating with foraged stonecrop herb.
The beef was meltingly tender, the fermented carrot
adding a slightly sweet bite and the sourdough was
cooked to perfection - if I do say so myself. It was
a delectable morsel, which perfectly whetted our
appetites for more to come.
Now, pumpkin is one of those vegetables I don’t tend
to cook with; the pumpkins which make it into our
house are usually sporting a gory smile lit up by a
candle. But the starter turned our idea of pumpkin
on its head, being the standout surprise of the
dinner.
The rich umami flavour of the miso glaze paired
beautifully with the robust, slightly sweet pumpkin.
Slivers of pickled apple brought a refreshing tang
while the wilted radicchio, just requiring a few
seconds in the pan, added a peppery note.
But the hero of the plate was the oat granola - a
nod to Feasted Stokie roots and the city’s signature
foodstuff, oatcakes. The exact composition of the
granola remains a mystery, but it was delicious, and
something I’d happily snack on forever more. A kiss
of herb oil, artfully drizzled by yours truly, tied the
dish together nicely.
Now, while on the surface it looked like the main
course required rather more attention - as you might
THE BEAUTIFUL BUTTERSCOTCH
POTTER’S BUTTERBEER
A TASTY PRESSED BEEF
expect - it was again simple finishing. The lamb
rump just needed a quick pan sear before popping
into the oven for a few minutes, the potato purée -
already in its piping bag ready to present - a quick
warm through in a pan of hot water and the sauce a
simple reheat. The presentation played on the Harry
Potter theme with instructions to pipe the potato into
wizard hats between each piece of lamb. It was easy
to do, and tasted just delightful, the lamb so tender,
the sauce a real flavour punch, the mash super
smooth.
The main course was the last bit of cooking for the
evening, as the sweet treats were all ready to serve.
The dessert was a fantastic play on Harry Potter’s
butterbeer, with a wonderful butterscotch tart and
delicious beer-poached pear. The tart, in particular,
was a triumph, with fine, buttery pastry and a rich
butterscotch filling.
Chocolate frogs are a Harry Potter staple, and Cris’
version combined rich, dark chocolate with sharp
fermented berries to glorious effect.
It was a truly magical feast; utilising seasonal produce
to tremendous effect, and conjured up in our own
kitchen with minimal effort - since Cris does the hard
work for you.
A worthy alternative to restaurant dining when you
fancy something a little different; I, for one, can’t
wait to see what the next box has in store.
Feast at Home’s October box is available to
order at www.feasted.co.uk/potter and is
priced at £100 for four people, available for
collection from Spode Works, or £115 for UK
A street food feast
STREET FOOD FANS IN LICHFIELD ARE IN FOR A TREAT THIS MONTH AS FIRM FAVOURITE
THE ENGLISH INDIAN REOPEN THEIR UNIT FOR AN EXCITING SERIES OF MONTHLY POP-UPS
Street food favourites The English Indian will be
reopening their Lichfield unit for monthly pop-up
events - starting this month.
Their space, at Shires Industrial Estate on
Essington Close, will be transformed into a street
food destination for the second weekend of every
month, giving foodie fans a chance to sample their
Indian twist on that Friday night staple - fish and
chips. The English Indian’s pakora-battered fish,
halloumi wedges and a vegan artichoke ‘vish’, all
served with chat masala chips, mint and chilli garden
mushy peas, and Indian chip shop curry sauce, are
firm favourites on the street food scene around the
country, so they are delighted to be serving at home
in Lichfield once again.
The launch weekend, on Friday October 14 and
Saturday October 15, will see the introduction of a
new, extended street food menu to complement their
signature dishes, as well as a licensed bar serving a
range of beers. There will be plenty of seating for
diners, as well as music during the weekend.
For diners with food allergies or intolerances, or
additional dietary requirements The English Indian
offers plenty of options to suit. The entire menu is
now certified gluten-free, nut-free and dairy-free
(apart from that delicious halloumi which is cooked
separately), and there are also vegetarian and vegan
options.
The pop-up events will run from October until
March, taking place on the second weekend of each
month. For more details, visit
www.theenglishindian.co.uk or find The
English Indian on Instagram @theenglishindian1
THERE’S MAGIC, MYSTERY AND MORE AFOOT AS WE ROUND UP SOME OF THE
BEST ENTERTAINMENT THE MIDLANDS HAS TO OFFER THROUGHOUT OCTOBER
WHAT: THE MAGIC OF MIDDLE-EARTH
WHERE: THE HUB AT ST MARY’S, LICHFIELD
WHEN: SEPTEMBER 24 TO DECEMBER 11
A magical treasure trove of objects and artworks
are coming to Lichfield in a free exhibition that is a
must-see for fans of fantasy and Middle-earth…
“In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit...”
With those famous words J.R.R. Tolkien welcomed
visitors into Middle-earth, a seemingly living,
breathing world both mythical and yet familiar.
Regarded as the ‘father’ of modern fantasy
literature, Tolkien’s cultural influence has extended
far beyond just other authors. Middle-earth has
inspired creative minds of all types and acted as a
Minecraft-like toolbox for generations of artists,
musicians, film makers, environmentalists, and game
designers.
The Magic of Middle-earth takes visitors on a
journey beyond the books to explore that expansive
artistic legacy. Discover jaw-dropping dioramas,
stunning paintings, incredible sculptures, even
Middle-earth themed Lego sets. With family fun and
kids’ activities this is an exciting exhibition for all
ages. Whether you’re a little halfling or a wizened
wizard you won’t want to miss this one.
Check out www.thehubstmarys.co.uk for up-todate
news and information on the exhibition and the
additional programme of events and activities to be
announced throughout the autumn. The exhibition
is free and runs until December 11 2022.
WHAT: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
WHERE: BIRMINGHAM REP
WHEN: OCTOBER 4 TO 8
“I do love nothing in the world so well as you. Is not
that strange?”
Besotted young couple Claudio and Hero have fallen
fast and are quickly engaged. Not everyone finds
romance so straightforward – Benedick balks at the
very thought of it and Beatrice agrees with him, on
that if nothing else. But somewhere in this world,
there’s someone for everyone, even if they’re right
under your nose.
Presented by Sheffield Theatres in association
with Ramps on the Moon, this new production of
Shakespeare’s raucous comedy is directed by Robert
Hastie (Coriolanus, A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
Every performance features the use of integrated
creative sign language, audio description and
captioning.
The Stage says: “This is Shakespeare as it should
be: inclusive, accessible and diverse. Ramps on the
Moon’s twist is a winning one – this really is as merry
as the day is long.”
The Rep is proud to be one of six Ramps venues
in a collaborative network led by New Wolsey
Theatre and including Theatre Royal Stratford
East, Nottingham Playhouse, Leeds Playhouse, and
Sheffield Theatres. For more details and to book
Wealth Matters
A MONTHLY REVIEW OF THE WORLD OF FINANCE FROM
LICHFIELD FINANCIAL ADVISER JEAN LAMB DipPFS
INFLATION AND OUR FINANCES
I came across a quote recently: “What’s my favourite
childhood memory? Not paying bills!”
I’m guessing we can all relate to that one, and it’s
particularly topical at the moment. Every time we turn
on our TVs or open a newspaper, we are confronted with
a barrage of statistics telling us just how badly off we are
and, if we are unlucky enough to survive the next few
months, we’ll be even worse off!
I don’t intend to add too much to the barrage, but I will
highlight one statistic which offers us some light at the
end of the tunnel. According to the Office for National
Statistics (ONS) on 14/09/2022, the Consumer Price
Index (CPI) which is now our main measure of inflation,
fell in August 2022, for the first time in almost a year, back
to single digits of 9.9%. It’s still high of course, but the
recently announced two year Energy Price Guarantee
could potentially knock several percent off this figure in
the months to come. I hope so. We shall see.
Central banks around the world, including the Bank of
England, have been trying to get inflation under control
by hiking interest rates. Bank of England Base Rate
rose to 1.75% in August 2022 (Source: Bank of England
15/09/2022). It is difficult to envisage it remaining this
low when you compare it to a CPI rate of 9.9% and I
consider it likely that it will increase further.

SO HOW DO WE GET THROUGH THIS?
The best way we can. I don’t profess to have all the
answers, but anyone who remembers the 1970s will
remember the highest ever recorded level of UK inflation
of 26.9% measured then by the Retail Price Index
(Source: ONS inflation and price indices 15/09/2022) and
the highest Bank of England base rate of 17% (Source:
Bank of England 15/09/2022).
History tells us that what held good then, holds good now.
From a financial health perspective it is even more vital to
do the best you can with what you’ve got.

ACTIONS TO CONSIDER
Review the following areas with your financial adviser:
Protection
Do you have a mortgage or other debts? Do you have
a family? Do you have earned income and would suffer
hardship if you became unable to work? Do you have
existing protection policies?
If you answer yes to any of the above, you should review
this area to ensure you have the right cover in place and
you are not paying any more than you have to for it.
Pensions
For those in employment, your employer will almost
certainly have a pension offering. It is generally wise
to take advantage of this and at least contribute as a
minimum the maximum amount that your employer will
match.
For anyone with an invested pension arrangement
(whether still contributing, drawing on it or paid up),
review it. Make sure you understand how and where it is
invested and if that investment and its associated level of
risk is right for you.
Investments
Once you have taken care of your short term, emergency
monies in savings accounts, look at your options to make
any surplus “nest egg” monies work as hard as they
possibly can to help offset the impact of inflation on their
“real” value eg., consider taking advantage of ISAs which
can potentially offer you tax efficient growth and/or
income. Don’t carry any dead wood. As with pensions, put
existing investments under the microscope to ensure each
is suitable for the world economy we find ourselves in.
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be
directly linked to the performance of the funds you select
and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You
may get back less than you invested.
The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may be subject to
changes in legislation in the future.
Hell for leather
FROM BUTTERY SOFT JACKETS TO COOL-GIRL TROUSERS, LEATHER IS THE GO-TO
FABRIC FOR ALL OF YOUR AUTUMN WARDROBE NEEDS, SAYS AMY NORBURY
A leather jacket is one of those truly perennial style
staples which always rises to the occasion. Come rain or
shine, it’s the go-to throw-on for myriad occasions and
myriad outfits. Hell, I even wore my own trusty leather
jacket over my wedding dress to shield my sequins from
the downpours on my big day.
Leather and autumn is a combination which has
continued to thrive from the catwalks to the high street for
years. But for AW22, the leather look - real and faux - has
been seriously amped up.
Designers galore packed their seasonal shows with new
and unexpected iterations, taking leather from stylish
outerwear choice to layering hero. Bottega Veneta’s luxe
leather skirts certainly wowed the crowds, while Loewe’s
minidresses, Isabel Marant’s leather layering, and headto-toe
looks at Alexander McQueen and Celine certainly
made a statement. Dresses and skirts, skirts and tank tops,
jumpsuits and trousers - the message was clear; leather is
the way to go.
When it comes to skirts, minis are having a fashion
moment, made ultra-wearable by teaming with chunky
knit jumpers and thick tights. If ladylike elegance is more
your vibe, below-the-knee pencil skirts or swishy pleated
midis in subtle hues are given an edge in leather form.
If you’re looking to embrace the look wholeheartedly,
keep an eye out for a leather update on the classic shirt or
wrap dress, or even a rock chick-inspired leather boilersuit
for the epitome of just-threw-it-on casual cool. Don’t be
afraid to team leather with more leather too; a leather
shirt with matching wide-legged trousers is the new co-ord
we all need this season.
If black feels too much of a tough biker-chick vibe, then
take a look at the rainbow of stunning shades perfect for
autumnal dressing. Creams, caramels and tans are perfect
for creating a lighter, brighter look while if you want to go
dark, swap black for delectable chocolate, khaki or cherry
hues for a more subtle take.
Accessories are where colour really comes into play;
update your run-of-the-mill black leather boots with a
more playful hue to inject a touch of sass into any outfit.
Five-step skincare
THE TREND FOR MINIMAL BEAUTY IS ALL WELL AND GOOD IF YOU HAVE GREAT SKIN. BUT ANYONE WHO
SUFFERS ACNE, SENSITIVITY, DRYNESS OR AGEING ISSUES WILL KNOW ONLY TOO WELL THAT A ROUTINE
IS VITAL TO KEEP THEIR COMPLEXION HAPPY AND HEALTHY. WE ASKED DEBORAH MITCHELL, FOUNDER
OF HEAVEN SKINCARE, TO TALK US THROUGH THE PERFECT DAILY REGIME
CLEANSE… the essential first step to remove
make-up, dead cells, oil and daily pollutants to
unclog pores and prevent breakouts. Soak your face
with warm water (make sure it’s not too hot as this
can dehydrate your skin and damage sensitive areas)
before applying a small amount of cleanser. Gently
massage in a circular motion, avoiding the eye area,
for between 30-60 seconds. Rinse thoroughly and
pat, not rub, your face dry with a clean, soft towel.
TRY… New Edition Cleanser is suitable for all
skin types; it contains my patented ABEETOXIN®
formula to firm as it cleanses.
EXFOLIATE… your skin is constantly shedding
dead skin cells to make way for new ones. As we
get older this process begins to slow down so it’s
important to give Mother Nature a helping hand. An
exfoliator helps scuff away the dead cells and clears
pores to leave your complexion looking more radiant
and feeling healthier.
TRY… I created Bee Peel to tighten and firm skin
as it works its way through dead skin cells, improving
pigmentation, breakouts and blemishes.
TONE… Toners are designed to restore your
natural pH balance as well as remove leftover
makeup and impurities, flush out pores and reduce
breakouts. Choose one that is suitable for your skin
type for maximum hydration, and use after your
cleanser and exfoliator and before moisturising.
TRY… Heaven’s Peppermint Hydrogel
minimises oil secretion, balances the PH levels,
refines pores and diminish blemishes, leaving your
skin feeling fully hydrated.
SERUM… These penetrate deeper than a
moisturiser, due to them having smaller molecules, so
they deliver a potent shot of ingredients directly into
your skin. They’re a great investment too; because
they are concentrated you only need a small amount
and you’ll find a few drops go a long way.
TRY… Clarifying Oil Serum is perfect for people
with eczema or sensitive skin, conditioning skin to
bring it back to equilibrium
MOISTURISE… Because the skin on your face
is thinner than anywhere else on your body it can
become dehydrated; by not keeping skin moisturised
it can quickly show early signs of ageing. Don’t make
the mistake of only applying moisturiser when your
skin feels dry – you should be applying it every day,
morning and night.
TRY… My bestselling Divine Cream is bursting
with organic mandarin and orange, both renowned
natural sources of vitamin C.
BENEFITS OF A
FIVE-STEP ROUTINE:
• By taking ten minutes each morning and evening you’re not only treating your
skin but treating yourself to some precious “me” time.
• Learning how to look after your complexion means you can face each day with
confidence.
• Creating a routine gives you focus, lowers stress levels and helps you relax.
• By continuing consistency, your products have time to work properly and you
will get the results you want.
• It’s never too late to start – the sooner you do, the more benefits you’ll see.
TOP TIP… Give products time to do their job properly – if you keep switching
what you put on your face from day to day it can become over-sensitive. And
when you discover a routine that really works you’ll notice that each product
works in synergy to give your skin the best start each day.
RYMANS PUMPKINS, WALL, LICHFIELD
Choose your pumpkin and make lots of mess carving
your pumpkins at the farm. There will be help
everywhere and so much fun to have. Rymans are a
family run, small arable farm in the village of Wall,
Lichfield. They diversified into Christmas trees five
years ago and, last year, started growing pumpkins.
The field full of beautiful pumpkins has been grown
and looked after with care. Some are humongous,
and pumpkins are priced by size.
The pumpkin patch in Wall will be open from 10am
until 5pm between October 17 and 31. As well as
pumpkin-picking, there are trailer rides, potato
picking, games, refreshments, flower arranging
workshops, evening pumpkin picking by torchlight,
evening adult carving sessions and a warm(ish!)
carving area with lots of help on hand. Warm drinks
and delicious nibbles are also available at the farm’s
food shack. Tickets are priced at £3, with under twos
going free. Visit www.rymanspumpkins.co.uk
DAVISONS LAW LICHFIELD’S
PRIVATE CLIENT SOLICITOR
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WILLS AND ESTATE PLANNING?
A will is one of the most important documents you can do during your lifetime as it is the only way to ensure that your
assets (such as your property, money and possessions) fall in accordance with your wishes when you die, for example
to specific family members, friends and/or charities. Estate planning is a necessary step when preparing your will, as it
considers any potential inheritance tax implications and how best to protect your beneficiaries (those who will benefit
from your estate). If you die without a will, there are certain rules that dictate who your estate will go to and this may
not be what you wished for.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHOOSE TO BE REPRESENTED BY DAVISONS?
Our clients at Davisons Law are at the heart of everything we do. We pride ourselves on being able to provide clear
legal advice by listening to our client’s wishes, simplifying our advice and providing the best outcome. In Private Client,
we understand that our clients may be going through a difficult time, for example if they have just lost a loved one and
therefore, as solicitors, we understand the importance of remaining approachable, compassionate and reliable.
WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
After qualifying, I worked as a Dispute Resolution Solicitor, before deciding to transfer into
Wills and Probate as a Private Client Solicitor. Moving into a different area of law
is not easy and requires dedication, but I believe the work I do in the Private
Client team is important to every person. I am happy that I made the big
leap and I am proud to be able to assist clients in this area of law.
WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING ON TV AT THE MOMENT?
I have just finished watching The Capture on BBC One which is
a British mystery thriller. You also can’t beat The Great British
Bake Off.
WHERE WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL HOLIDAY
DESTINATION?
I really want to go on Safari in Africa one day.
