Welcome to J’AIME 

As we go to press with this issue on International 

Women’s Day, it seems fitting that our first feature 

of the month covers a brand new film, launched 

on this very day, to commemorate the remarkable 

achievements of Mercedes Gleitze, the first British 

woman to swim the English Channel in 1927. 

Vindication Swim is the culmination of a threeyear 

passion project for director Elliott Hasler, and 

covers Mercedes’ incredible swim, and the build-up 

to her Channel attempt, which saw her take part in 

training swims around the Midlands. We caught up 

with Elliott ahead of the film’s launch in cinemas 

nationwide to find out more. 

Elsewhere, there’s plenty going on around the 

Midlands to keep the whole family entertained 

this spring. We take a look at the impressive lineup 

for Lichfield Literature Festival, plus we chat 

to Liverpool band The Coral, who are bringing 

their eponymous debut album to the stage at the 

Lichfield Garrick more than two decades after 

its release for an intimate evening of music and

A FILM CELEBRATING THE FIRST BRITISH WOMAN TO SWIM THE ENGLISH CHANNEL 

HAS BEEN RELEASED TO MARK INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY THIS MONTH - WITH 

KEY SCENES FILMED AROUND THE MIDLANDS. AMY NORBURY CAUGHT UP WITH

VINDICATION SWIM TELLS THE 

STORY OF CHANNEL SWIMMER 

MERCEDES GLEITZE 

In celebration of International Women’s Day on 

March 8, the much-anticipated biopic Vindication 

Swim hit cinemas across the UK, taking a deep 

dive into the extraordinary life of Mercedes Gleitze, 

who became the first British woman to swim the 

English Channel in 1927. The film depicts Mercedes’ 

upstream struggle in overcoming both the cold 

waters of the English Channel and the oppressive 

society of 1920s England. However, after a rival 

comes forward claiming to have accomplished the 

same feat, Mercedes is forced into battle to retain her 

record and her legacy. 

Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker 

Elliott Hasler, Vindication Swim stars British-Irish 

actress Kirsten Callaghan in her debut role as 

Mercedes Gleitze, as well as Darkest Hour and The 

Favourite star John Locke as Gleitze’s trainer Harold 

Best, alongside Gosford Park’s James Wilby and 

Douglas Hodge, star of Joker, The Great and Black 

Mirror. 

Notably, key portions of the film were shot at the 

Aston University Swimming Pool, the Grade II listed 

gothic renaissance Moseley Road Baths, and the 

Black Country Living Museum, adding a local touch 

to this global tale of determination and triumph. 

This connection not only adds a layer of authenticity 

to the film, but also reinforces the West Midlands’ 

place in the broader narrative of Gleitze’s incredible 

life. 

“”I stumbled across the story around five or six years 

ago, and I was just taken by it,” explains writer and 

director Elliott Hasler. “Mercedes was an incredible 

woman, and so inspiring, so that just drew me into 

her story. 

“We’re also both from Brighton, which gave me a 

strong connection to Mercedes, as well as the fact 

that we were born exactly a century apart, so there’s 

a nice synergy. I felt a connection with her from the 

start.” 

Vindication Swim is the result of a several-years-long 

passion project for 23-year-old Elliott. But the shoot 

didn’t get off to the best start.

“The challenge of filming out at sea was integral 

to the project; filming at sea is incredibly difficult, 

and the challenge of going out there and doing 

everything in the most realistic way possible was a 

very interesting aspect of the film for me too,” Elliott 

says. 

“But on the first day of filming out at sea, everyone 

was really badly seasick. Conditions weren’t 

quite good enough to go out but we didn’t have 

the experience at that point so we went out, and 

the waves were pretty big, and two or three days 

afterwards people still felt ill from the motion 

sickness! 

“That day was very challenging, and none of it 

ended up in the film, so it was just a learning curve. 

But we realised how it was when you’re filming out at 

sea and could put in measures to help. 

“We had a great crew and a great cast, and everyone 

was willing to give their all to make this story come 

alive. It’s dangerous filming out at sea, and everyone 

needs to be in sync and work towards the same goal. 

“You have the weather to contend with, the swell, the 

tides, so it has to be a well-oiled machine - which it 

was by the end!” 

Taking the lead role in the biopic is Kirsten 

Callaghan in her feature debut, who has garnered 

critical acclaim for her portrayal as Mercedes. 

“We held an open casting call for Mercedes, and had 

a few different actresses audition for the role, but 

Kirsten Callaghan came in and it was just uncanny,” 

says Elliott. “She looks exactly like Mercedes, 

they’re nearly identical, and she just embodied the 

character traits we were looking for, that sense of 

determination, resilience and perseverance. All of 

those things that Mercedes had, Kirsten shares and 

could bring to the film. It was a no-brainer - Kirsten 

was the only real choice for the role.” 

Impressively, Kirsten performed all of her own stunts 

in the water, undertaking a gruelling three-month

training schedule before filming began. 

“Everything within those swimming sequences is 

real, not tanks, or blue screens, or body doubles,” 

says Elliott. “It was our aim to really submerge the 

audience into the waters of the Channel, so they feel 

as if they are swimming alongside Mercedes on her 

incredible journey and get to share in her love affair 

with the water. 

“Kirsten was adamant that this was the best way to 

represent Mercedes, her spirit and who she was, and 

I think that comes across in the film - you can tell 

that everything is real. It’s as close to a recreation of 

Mercedes’ actual swim you can get.” 

With the majority of the action taking place 

outdoors, and more so at sea, the great - or not-sogreat 

- British weather had a vital role to play. 

“Sometimes we’d go out there and get two 

shots before the weather would change 

and we’d have to come back in; other days 

we’d be on the dock and the weather would 

change before we’d even finished loading the 

boats so we wouldn’t make it out that day,” 

says Elliott. “It was very difficult, but when 

everything came together and we had these 

magical days when we could get all the shots 

we needed, it was incredibly rewarding.” 

“And because of the nature of filming out 

at sea, we could only do it in the summer

months, so it took three 

consecutive years to get 

everything we needed. 

The weather wasn’t great 

in a couple of those years 

so we missed a whole 

month here and there. 

It was tough, but people 

were great about keeping 

their schedule’s free so we 

could pick up - COVID 

actually helped with that 

because no-one was going 

on holiday!” 

But Vindication Swim’s filming schedule started just 

before COVID forced the country into a shutdown 

- meaning production was a stop-start process, 

shutting down three times with various lockdowns 

and setting production back by around a year. 

“It was a challenging film for many reasons,” says 

Elliott. “It’s an independent film so everything was 

done on a budget, we didn’t spend much money 

but needed to still do everything in the best way to 

honour Mercedes and her incredible achievements.” 

One of Mercedes’ standout achievements in the 

Midlands took place between July 18 and 19, 1930, 

when she completed a mammoth 39-hour endurance 

swim at Wolverhampton’s Municipal Baths, 

witnessed by more than 5,000 people. 

“Spectators came in and lined the poolside just to 

watch Mercedes swim for hours and hours,” says 

Elliott. 

“It was great to bring Mercedes back to the areas

she swam in nearly a century ago. We had a lot of 

support from all of the locations we filmed in; we 

did some scenes in Aston at the university swimming 

pool, which is a lovely pool so it looks amazing in the 

film. 

“We also filmed at the Black Country Living 

Museum and they were so great there; it’s a fantastic 

location - they use it in Peaky Blinders, so it was a 

great place to film. You’re immediately immersed 

in the 1920s and that world, so once you fill it with 

all the extras it’s so cool, it looks like you’ve stepped 

back in time. As a director watching it through the 

viewfinder it was a really cool experience. 

“We filmed all of our scenes there in one day, and 

there were about ten scenes to film, so it was a long 

day but it was definitely a highlight of the shoot.” 

Following her Channel feat, Mercedes also became 

the first person to complete many other incredible 

swims around the world, including the Straits of 

Gibraltar, the Dardanelles and the distance between 

Robben Island and Cape Town. 

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, 

Vindication Swim serves as a poignant reminder of 

the indomitable spirit of a woman who dared to 

dream beyond the confines of her era. 

The film’s release will be accompanied by a Q and 

A tour by Elliott and key cast members, which 

invites Midlands audiences to pay homage to a 

local connection that shaped Gleitze’s remarkable 

legacy. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a 

sports fan, or simply someone seeking inspiration, 

Vindication Swim promises a cinematic experience 

that celebrates not only the achievements of 

Mercedes Gleitze, but also the collective strength and 

determination of women who have left an indelible 

mark on our world.

A literary celebration 

LICHFIELD FESTIVAL’S FOUR-DAY LITERATURE FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE CITY FROM MARCH 

21 TO 24, WITH A FABULOUSLY FULL LONG WEEKEND TO CELEBRATE THE WRITTEN WORD 

There are best-selling authors from the worlds 

of history, politics, economics, the natural world 

and current affairs, plus new fiction, memoir and 

biography for Lichfield audiences to immerse 

themselves in as Lichfield Literature Festival returns 

to the city this month. 

Guest authors who will be taking to the stage in a 

superb series of events in the centre of Lichfield, 

at The George Hotel, The Hub at St Mary’s and 

the Garrick Theatre include former BBC journalist 

Rory Cellan-Jones, whose memoir Ruskin Park is a 

heartfelt account of a family mystery with a shoe box 

of letters as clues. 

Festival favourite - and the Festival Writer/Historian 

in Residence 2024 - Alison Weir brings the middle 

book of her Sunday Times best-selling Tudor 

Rose trilogy to Lichfield, while Ian Dunt digs 

deep into our political system and its never-ending 

machinations in How Westminster Works...and Why 

It Doesn’t. 

Two books look at the English and US Civil Wars 

respectively, as popular historian Jessie Childs (The 

Siege of Loyalty House) makes a first visit to the 

Festival, joined by the returning Peter Moore (Life, 

Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness). 

Former BBC Radio 4 Today editor, Sarah Sands, 

also returns to Lichfield with her natural world 

and memoir crossover The Hedgehog Diaries, and 

there is more from the animal world as Rosamund 

Young, author of a Times’ book of year, The Secret 

Life of Cows, turns her attention to The Wisdom 

of Sheep and Other Animals. In fiction, there is 

much anticipation over the new release Small Hours 

by Bobby Palmer, whose Isaac and the Egg was a 

smash-hit in 2022/23. 

The Festival also welcomes Bob Cryer, son of 

comedy legend Barry Cryer, who reveals the story 

of the man behind the jokes in his memoir Same 

Time Tomorrow? and, in a joint event with the 

Lichfield Garrick Theatre to close the Festival, Nick 

Wallis, one of the journalists at the forefront of the 

Horizon investigation, takes the stage to discuss the 

jaw-dropping miscarriage of justice that is The Post

INTIMATE EVENING OF MUSIC AND CONVERSATION 

Sonically unique, wilfully leftfield and 

thrillingly eclectic, The Coral combined 

psychedelia with dub, disco groove with 

pop and ragtime with Egyptian reggae on 

a remarkable debut that has proved to be 

timeless. 

And now, some 22 years on, that record 

sounds as fresh as it did when it was released 

in July 2002. Produced by the Lightning Seeds’ 

frontman Ian Broudie, the band’s sojourn into 

psychedelia and folk rock was refreshing and 

inventive, compelling and precocious. It helped 

to change the musical landscape, while also 

adding The Coral’s name to the remarkable 

inventory of classic British beat bands from 

Liverpool – a catalogue that began with The Beatles, 

in whose famed Cavern Club The Coral cut their 

teeth. 

And now, singer-songwriter James Skelly and 

keyboardist Nick Power will be reflecting on 

their debut in an intimate evening of music and 

conversation at the Lichfield Garrick on March 29. 

James Skelly reflects on the band’s roots on The 

Wirral: “We’d stand on the beach and if we looked 

one way it would be Wales then you’d look in the 

other direction and see Liverpool. That sense of 

identity was important. We thought that if we could 

bring those two things together, nobody had really 

done that. 

“There was the rebellion between the two of them – 

Wales and Liverpool. There was this quirkiness and 

uncool thing. It was almost the opposite of London, 

almost the opposite of bands like Radiohead. Not 

that there was anything wrong with Radiohead, they 

were a genius band, but I remember at the time that 

they seemed like this big prog band and we wanted 

to be the opposite of that. We wanted to bring the 

Welsh psyche thing and the Liverpool thing together, 

the skiffle thing. We wanted that wackiness and 

psychedelia with that hillbilly thing of the Welsh.” 

THE CORAL’S EPONYMOUS DEBUT 

ALBUM WILL BE BROUGHT TO LIFE 

AT THE GARRICK THIS MONTH 

Universal acclaim followed, while BRIT Award 

and Mercury Music Prize nominations were duly 

conferred. The Coral raced to number five in 

the chart, while also charting in France, Ireland, 

Japan, Scotland, and the US. The band toured the 

UK twice while also supporting Pulp and Oasis. 

V Festival was next on their list as the band’s 

second single, Dreaming Of You, helped provide a 

breakthrough. 

Two decades provide perspective, of course, and The 

Coral holds up remarkably well – a testament to the 

band’s invention. 

James says: “We found an identity together. We just 

clicked. By the time it came to making an album it 

was almost telepathic. We almost lived like a mini 

cult. We just did the album ourselves. In some ways, 

the album was almost an afterthought. Making a 

record wasn’t even really discussed, really. It was just 

telepathic. 

“We were very different. That was our thing. When 

we’re at our best that is our thing. Maybe it’s not the 

thing that sells most records but that’s our thing.”

The demand for property to rent is at a historic high 

at present. With mortgage borrowing costs still at 

high levels and landlords having held off from buying 

in case of further drops in house prices, the supply 

of available property to let has reduced dramatically. 

The consequence of this imbalance is that rents 

have increased very quickly across the whole market. 

Many properties are now achieving rents 15 to 20 

per cent higher than in 2022. 

For landlords, this is good news as the return on 

investment is increasing and for those who are in a 

position to now purchase another buy-to-let, they can 

do with knowing that the average property now takes 

three to seven days to go under offer from a would-be 

tenant – and often for above the asking rent. 

For tenants, this means competition when you are 

looking for a property is fierce. My advice would be 

to ensure you have all your supporting documents 

(proof of earnings, previous landlord references) 

lined up and that you monitor Rightmove closely for 

new properties coming on the market. 

When you see a property you like, bear in mind that 

you are competing with many others and you should 

be as flexible as possible to attend a viewing at the 

earliest chance. If the property is the one for you, I 

would advise you to apply immediately with all your 

supporting documents and follow up with a call to 

the agent to ensure your application is complete and 

no information is missing. 

Also keep an eye on the date the property becomes 

available to move in. A landlord will want it occupied 

as close to this date as possible, meaning if you can’t 

leave your existing property until a few weeks after 

this date, you are likely to miss out. Many applicants 

now, in order to secure the property, find themselves 

signing papers and starting to pay rent on their new 

property while still having a week or two to also pay 

on their existing one.

Family fun at Staffordshire 

County Show 

THE STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY SHOW RETURNS TO THE STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY 

SHOWGROUND ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 29 AND THURSDAY, MAY 30 - AND YOU COULD 

WIN ONE OF FIVE FAMILY TICKETS TO THE EVENT 

From narrow-gauge steam railway rides and 

traditional Punch and Judy Shows to the worldfamous 

JCB Dancing Diggers, which will be 

pirouetting around the Main Ring, this year’s 

Staffordshire County Show has a jam-packed 

programme for the whole family. 

The show, which is held at the Staffordshire County 

Showground, is one of the area’s major events of the 

summer and is expected to attract more than 55,000 

visitors. 

As well as that headlining show from JCB Dancing 

Diggers, the packed Main Ring programme includes 

the Young Farmer’s Floats, which this year has a 

theme of ‘Children’s Books’, show jumping, and the 

Grand Parade of Livestock as well as the Parade of 

Hounds. 

The Country Pursuits Arena returns with an 

incredible demonstration of dog agility and obedience 

from the West Lancs Dog Display Team. Visitors 

can also watch the birds of prey display, the ferret 

roadshow, demonstrations of fly fishing and take the 

opportunity to walk an alpaca. 

Around the showground there will be demonstrations 

of traditional rural crafts such as thatching, coracle 

making and drystone walling as well as a display of 

vintage cars and agricultural machinery. 

However, at the heart of this traditional county show 

- which has been held for more than 200 years - is

livestock, with more than 1,000 cattle, sheep, pigs and 

goats and 1,500 horses and ponies. 

There are a number of competitions including 

Sheep Shearing and Wool Handling, the Farriery 

Competition and the Dog Show, which attracts 

around 2,000 dogs representing every breed of dog in 

the UK. 

Children of all ages are especially well catered for 

with a children’s farm, fairground rides and the 

opportunity to have their picture taken with giant 

tortoises that are up to 80 years old, while some 

400 trade stands and a packed food hall give ample 

shopping opportunities.

the gate price, are on sale now until midnight on May

NOW. THIS MONTH, IT’S THE SEASON OF ABUNDANCE FOR WILD GARLIC 

As winter finally gives way to warmer climes, 

Lichfield chef Jack Dubberley is preparing for 

the first - and arguably Jack’s favourite - foraging 

milestones of the year. That’s right; spring’s arrival 

heralds the start of wild garlic season - and if 

you haven’t yet incorporated wild garlic into your 

culinary repertoire, the time, say Jack, is now. 

“The best time to get it is now, because it’s the 

younger leaves, but it’s already out in abundance all 

over Lichfield - it’s even flowering in places,” says 

Jack. “At St Michael’s there’s a board advising people 

what’s in season and growing on the land, and there’s 

a huge wild garlic patch there - people can just grab 

some while they’re out and about. And the great 

thing about wild garlic is that the more you pick it, 

the more it grows back. Just make sure you wash the 

leaves well before you use them!” 

So, once you’ve hunted down a local wild garlic 

patch, what do you do with your foraged bounty? 

“There’s so much you can do with wild garlic; it goes 

well with meat, fish and veg - basically anywhere you 

can use garlic, you can replace it with wild garlic,” 

says Jack. 

“The first thing to do is just use the leaves as a veg

replacement. Add a few leaves to your plate as a 

garnish or in salad, just treat it like spinach. It’s really 

good mixed with spinach and cooked down quickly 

in a buttery emulsion for an accompaniment to steak. 

“Then if you want to get a bit more technical you 

can make a puree or a sauce; just cook it down in 

some boiling salted water for a couple of minutes 

then drain the excess water, add to a blender 

with a splash of water and blend until you get the 

consistency you want, season it and add some cream 

or milk if you want a richer sauce. 

“One of the dishes which is coming onto our menu is 

based around wild garlic - it’s quail breast and confit 

leg with wild garlic sauce, wild garlic leaves, puffed 

barley and feta - but it’s the sauce that really makes 

the dish and pulls everything together. 

It’s great added to any vegetable soups - instead of 

doing a spinach and potato soup, do wild garlic and

potato for something a little different. And the best 

thing is, the garlic is local, seasonal and free!” 

As well as being a foraging foodie’s best friend, 

wild garlic has a whole host of health benefits. It’s 

packed with vitamin C, A, iron and more, plus it has 

antibiotic and antibacterial properties, and it can 

help to reduce cholesterol and lower blood pressure - 

making it one of nature’s true superfoods. 

One of Jack’s signature dishes is a delectable wild 

garlic popcorn, which features as a snack on many of 

his fine dining menus, while wild garlic pesto, oil and 

mayonnaise are all firm favourites too. 

“You could make a really rustic mayo by running 

finely chopped wild garlic through a plain 

mayonnaise, or you could use wild garlic oil instead 

of regular oil when making mayo,” says Jack. “Or for 

a really easy version, you can mix shop-bought mayo 

with some wild garlic oil - it’ll just be a little bit looser 

because you’re adding extra liquid. 

“It’s delicious with prawns, and amazing on 

buttermilk chicken for a delicious burger, which is

something we did a couple of years ago when we did 

our barbeque season.” 

Apart from the leaves, you can use wild garlic 

flowers, buds and capers as the season progresses, 

says Jack. The buds and capers are particularly good 

for pickling and using later in the year, while the 

flowers are lovely as a delicate garnish and for a burst 

of garlic flavour in salads. 

Wild garlic pesto 

Ingredients: 

200g wild garlic leaves 

150g pine nuts or cashews, toasted and cooled 

150ml neutral oil such as vegetable or rapeseed - you 

may require more oil depending on your desired 

consistency 

100g grated parmesan 

WILD GARLIC PESTO 

Pesto is a really simple sauce which can be made in 

minutes, but a fresh, homemade version is far superior 

to a shop-bought jarred sauce so it’s really worth making 

the effort. In this recipe, the wild garlic leaves replace the 

basil and garlic used in a traditional recipe. For a vegan 

version, you can substitute vegan cheese, or leave it out 

altogether - just adjust the seasoning accordingly - and 

you can also omit the pine nuts or cashews for a nut-free 

pesto - the nuts are really just about adding texture to 

the sauce. 

Add all of your ingredients to a blender and pulse to 

combine until you reach your desired consistency - start 

with 150ml oil and use more if you like a looser sauce. 

Make sure your nuts, if using, are cooled before adding. 

Use your pesto as a simple sauce for pasta, as a pizza 

topping, to dress seasonal veg such as Jersey Royals and 

asparagus, and more.

THIS DELECTABLE, SEASONAL DISH PERFECT FOR A DECADENT WEEKEND BRUNCH 

Asparagus 

with poached 

eggs and 

hollandaise 

Ingredients - serves one: 

3-4 asparagus spears 

2 whole eggs 

2 egg yolks 

125g butter, melted 

5 tbsp white wine vinegar 

1 shallot, finely diced 

4-5 black peppercorns 

1 bay leaf 

2 slices sourdough 

2 slices prosciutto 

Salt to taste 

Method: 

Trim the lower leaves off the asparagus 

and bend until the bottom snaps off. Add 

the asparagus to salted boiling water for 

three to four minutes until al dente, then 

transfer to ice water to stop the cooking. 

In a small pan, add the shallot, 

peppercorns and bayleaf, then add 

the vinegar and simmer for one to two 

minutes until reduced, then strain. 

For the hollandaise, whisk the egg yolks 

slightly in a mixing bowl, then add the 

strained vinegar and whisk. Slowly stream 

in the melted butter while constantly 

whisking until all the butter is combined. 

Season to taste with salt and lemon juice. 

Lay the prosciutto on a tray lined with 

baking paper and cook in the oven at 

180C for eight to 10 minutes until crisp. 

Fill a tall saucepan with water, add a 

splash of white wine vinegar and bring to 

a simmer, then crack in the whole eggs, 

leaving them to poach for two to twoand-a-half 

minutes. 

Toast the sourdough and warm the 

asparagus in the oven before serving. 

To plate, lay the sourdough on the 

bottom, top with the asparagus, then the 

prosciutto and finally the poached eggs 

before spooning over the hollandaise 

and finishing with cracked black pepper.

Wealth Matters 

A BI-MONTHLY LOOK AT THE WORLD OF FINANCE FROM LICHFIELD

TAX YEAR END PLANNING 

Firstly, as we close in on the end of the tax year, planning 

is worth considering. The tax year ends on the April 5th 

each year and many tax allowances are lost if not used by 

this date. 

Among these allowances is contributions to an Individual 

Savings Accounts (ISA). This allows each individual to 

invest £20,000 in either a Cash ISA or a Stocks and Shares 

ISA. Returns are free of income tax and capital gains tax, 

where applicable. 

It is also important to look at whether a pension 

contribution is suitable. Dependent on an individual’s 

income it could be possible to make a contribution of up 

to £60,000. It is also potentially possible to use unused 

allowances from previous tax years, going back three tax 

years, though the current year allowance must be used first. 

In terms of inheritance tax, the annual gift exemption 

of £3,000 is a useful way to reduce the potential of 

inheritance tax on an individual’s estate. It is also possible 

to use the previous tax years allowance, where this hasn’t 

been used. Inheritance tax is charged at 40% above the nil 

rate band and residence nil rate band (if applicable), which 

will vary from person to person. 

There are other tax allowances that can be used to benefit 

individuals depending on circumstances and seeking 

professional advice can add substantial value. 

PROTECTING YOUR ESTATE FROM 

INHERITANCE TAX 

If affected by Inheritance Tax then there are a myriad of 

options to help protect the wealth you have built up to pass 

on as much of it as is possible. 

Naturally, you can do nothing and allow your heirs to pay 

any tax liability due and that will be the default position 

for those who don’t make plans to navigate this tax, often 

called a tax of choice. 

Someone famously said, tongue in cheek, that those who 

don’t plan must trust the tax man more than their family/ 

heirs. 

Having advised clients for more than two decades I am 

always quizzed about a little extra return or slightly lower 

charges, whilst the spectre of 40% inheritance tax looms 

where no planning is undertaken. In other words, making 

a little more each year can be scuppered by this large tax 

threat. 

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS? 

For most, gifting means loss of assets they need in 

retirement. Ignoring the exemptions then generally 

surviving seven years will make gifting inheritance tax 

effective. 

Using the annual exemption of £3,000 and the most 

underused, ‘gift out of ordinary expenditure’ is the first 

place to start. The latter allows a regular gift each year and 

the seven year rule should not apply provided the gift is 

affordable and from excess income, which doesn’t affect the 

ability to cover ordinary expenditure. 

Among many other options are insurance to cover a 

liability, various trust solutions and reviewing the treatment 

of existing pension and death in service/life insurance 

death benefits. 

Many assume the latter are Inheritance tax exempt, 

though generally in the absence of planning, death benefits 

fall to a spouse/civil partner and form part of their estate 

for inheritance tax purposes. There is NO inheritance tax 

on assets passed between spouses/civil partners. 

IN CONCLUSION 

It makes sense to discuss with the family your aims and 

objectives and seek professional advice to determine what 

your options are to protect your assets from various risks 

including taxation. 

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be

and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You 

may get back less than you invested. 

An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide 

the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. 

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, 

can change at any time and are generally dependent on 

individual circumstances.

A centenary of excellence 

2024 MARKS 100 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION 

AT WALSALL’S MAYFIELD PREPARATORY SCHOOL 

This year will be a momentous 

occasion in the history of 

Mayfield Preparatory School, 

in Walsall, as staff, governors, 

pupils and parents mark the 

school’s centenary. 

Mayfield Preparatory School 

was founded in 1924 as a 

preparatory school for Queen 

Mary’s High School on the 

site of Mayfield House on 

Sutton Road. Initially, the 

school consisted of a mixed 

kindergarten and a girls’ 

preparatory department which 

fed into the high school on 

Upper Forster Street. In the 

last 100 years, Mayfield has expanded and evolved 

into a flourishing school for over 200 two-to–11-yearold 

boys and girls. For many years, it has now been a 

leading independent preparatory school, both in the 

West Midlands and nationally. Mayfield is currently 

ranked 15 in the Sunday Times League Tables. 

Mayfield’s thriving school community is planning 

to mark this occasion with a range of celebrations 

throughout 2024 to commemorate the anniversary 

with the children, beginning with a whole school trip 

to the Black Country Living Museum to experience 

a school classroom in 1924; there will be displays of 

children’s work around the school reflecting upon 

children’s books and authors from the last 100 years; 

the theme of British Science Week this year is Time, 

providing the perfect opportunity for the children 

to investigate and research inventors, inventions, 

major events and historical figures from the last 100 

years; and the School Council are also planning and 

designing a time capsule, incorporating everyday 

items, children’s work, diaries of a typical week at 

school in 2024, and which can then be opened in the 

future for later generations of children to compare

As the school is dynamic, constantly evolving and

always seeking to excite and stimulate the pupils, as 

well as massively investing in computing, seeking to 

provide each pupil with a device, Governors are also 

excited to announce the construction of a brand-new 

Centenary Library, planned to open in the summer. 

This will provide an additional quiet space for pupils 

to enjoy reading books and researching topics vital 

for their academic education, while nurturing their 

mental health and wellbeing. Staff and parents are 

also working together to organise special events 

for the whole school community to join in the 

celebrations, such as the centenary Summer Garden 

Party, due to take place on the spacious school fields 

on Saturday, June 29. 

The school is oversubscribed, with waiting lists 

in operation for the older year groups. However, 

there are currently still spaces in the Early Years 

department for children aged two to five. The school 

operates the universal free 15 hours of childcare per 

week for children of this age, so contact the school
