that has been spring so far, accompanied by April 

showers aplenty, we’re all feeling just about ready 

for some sun in our lives! And hopefully the arrival 

of your favourite local lifestyle magazine can 

provide that little ray of sunshine you need! 

And in this issue we’ve got a veritable feast for 

foodies as Lichfield chef Jack Dubberley talks us 

through the season’s best produce, Thyme Kitchen 

offer a fiesta of flavour with a Mexican-inspired 

recipe, and we take a look at one of Lichfield’s 

newest foodie hotspots. 

We take a look ahead at to one of the highlights of 

the Midlands entertainment calendar as Lichfield 

Festival’s stellar lineup gets set to bring the very best 

in world-class performers from across the arts to the 

cathedral city, and check out the variety of events 

taking place around the area to keep the whole 

family entertained. 

With Father’s Day on the horizon it’s time to

A feast of entertainment 

LICHFIELD’S FLAGSHIP 11-DAY MULTI-ARTS FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE CITY THIS SUMMER 

WITH A STELLAR LINEUP OF WORLD-CLASS PERFORMERS FROM ACROSS THE ARTS 

Stars of classical, folk, world, jazz, cabaret 

and popular music, theatre, dance, and the 

written word, are set to converge on Lichfield 

as this summer’s Lichfield Festival takes ove3r 

the city from July 4 to 14.. 

Headline acts in Lichfield Cathedral include 

multi-talented folk singer and Mercury Music 

Prize nominee Seth Lakeman and swashbuckling 

sea-shanty singers The Longest 

Johns along with the all-singing, all-plucking 

spectacle that is George Hinchcliffe’s Ukulele 

Orchestra of Great Britain. Elgar’s Cello 

Concerto is among the majestic concert 

classics from the BBC National Orchestra of 

Wales, and renowned Baroque violinist and 

Associate Artist Rachel Podger plays Vivaldi’s 

much-loved The Four Seasons to open the Festival. 

The Cathedral is also the backdrop for Ballet 

Cymru’s exquisite Romeo and Juliet, and is the 

atmospheric setting for a late-night concert by 2024 

RPS award-winning sitar player Jasdeep Singh 

Degun, and a magical candlelit concert by pianist 

and Associate Artist Danny Driver to close the 

Festival. 

There are more contributions from the Festival’s 

Associate Artists including five concerts by the 

Brodsky Quartet in which they play the complete 

Shostakovich Quartets, a brand-new comedy from 

Lichfield’s own award-winning story-teller Katie 

Arnstein, and cabaret shows with Jessica Walker and 

BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF

Joseph Atkins. A glamorous evening celebrates The 

Magic of the Movies with violinist and vocalist Lizzie 

Ball and world-renowned pianist and Ronnie Scott’s 

Artistic Director James Pearson. 

Also returning to the Festival is comedienne, 

songstress and one third of the iconic Fascinating 

Aida, Liza Pulman who teams up with Joe Stilgoe for 

A Couple of Swells. Charles Court Opera bring their 

latest Gilbert and Sullivan production, The Sorcerer, 

and wine-writer and broadcaster Oz Clarke reunites 

with Armonico Consort for a light-hearted look at 

music and wine. 

In Holst150 Lichfield Festival marks the 150th 

anniversary of the Cheltenham-born composer 

Gustav Holst with choral music by The Carice 

Singers, his tone poem Egdon Heath 

played by the BBC National Orchestra of 

Wales, and Holst arrangements from BBC 

Folk Musician of the Year Will Pound and 

percussionist Delia Stevens. 

Jazz nights include Jeremy Sassoon’s Ray 

Charles Project and Wendy Kirkland’s tribute 

to the music of Blossom Dearie. Joyful soul 

music comes from the 100-strong Lichfield 

Gospel Choir, while globally renowned 

qanun player Maya Youssef introduces 

Lichfield to the 78-stringed zither, and there’s 

folk from Jim Causley and Miranda Sykes

(Ghosts, Werewolves and Countryfolk) and Wayward 

Jane. 

History is a rich seam at this year’s Festival. Lesley 

Smith raids her wardrobe to present the story of 

Mary Queen of Scots in full Elizabethan costume, 

recorder quartet Palisander’s historical concert 

experience follows the wives of Henry VIII, and The 

Lord Chamberlain’s Men perform Shakespeare’s 

Hamlet in the open air, in period costume, with an 

all-male cast, just as it would have been in Elizabeth 

I’s day. 

Among literary events are historical writer and new 

Lichfield Festival patron Tracy Borman, forensic 

investigator Jo Ward, Einstein expert Samuel 

Graydon, and Philip Modiano who explores the 

Lichfield paintings of pre-Impressionist artist J L 

Petit. 

2024 also sees the return of the popular Midlands 

Choir of the Year, the final taking place in the 

Cathedral. 

For younger audiences, Waterperry Opera returns 

with Peter and The Wolf, and music, art and drama 

projects on the theme of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons 

take place with local schools for this year’s Aspire! 

community and participation programme. 

Making a show-stopping climax, the Festival 

Fireworks is free to all at Beacon Park on Friday, July 

12, in collaboration with Fuse and Lichfield Arts. 

The Festival is supported by Arts Council England, 

Lichfield District Council, its Major Festival Partners 

McArthurGlen West Midlands, Pegasus Homes and 

Roxane UK (Aqua Pura), and from its corporate 

and individual supporters, all of which enables the 

Festival to bring stellar artists and events to the city 

year on year.

The Echoes of history 

AN IMMERSIVE THEATRE EXPERIENCE BROUGHT TOGETHER BY THE 

LICHFIELD COMMUNITY COMES TO LICHFIELD CATHEDRAL THIS MONTH 

Echoes is a community theatre performance 

that will see the audience taken on a journey 

through the ages with theatre, dance and 

music, which will be hosted by Lichfield 

Cathedral on May 11 and 12. 

The project, supported by the National 

Lottery Heritage Fund and Westhill 

Endowment, has brought together individuals 

and arts groups from across the local area. A 

core cast from the local community between 

the ages of 13 and 70-plus, have been devising 

a script and rehearsing since the start of the 

year. 

On a weekly basis the project has been 

supported by a small team of committed 

creatives including young producer Emily 

Lowe, BOA student Millie-May Terrington 

and director Emily Summers of Bostin’ 

Creative. 

Emily Summers says: “Our talented cast 

applied to take part last year and since 

January have spent weeks researching and exploring 

the history of Lichfield Cathedral. Developing 

scenes, concepts, and characters in rehearsals at the 

Old Stables - close enough to hear the bells ring!” 

Using the magnificent Lichfield Cathedral as its 

backdrop, Echoes is a time machine performance, 

lasting roughly 60 minutes, that will see the audience 

walk through different spaces in the Cathedral and 

encounter tales from the past.

Emily continues: “The audience will be taken on 

an intimate journey through time, and around 

the Cathedral. Coming face to face with Saints, 

Stonemasons, Victorians, Roundheads, Royalists, 

and more, with pop up performances from a number 

of community groups - but we don’t want to give too 

much away! 

“Echoes promises to be an immersive experience full 

of secrets, history, heart, and hope. We’re very proud 

of it. Don’t miss out!” 

Tickets for Echoes are free with a ‘pay what you can’ 

message, but they are limited to 70 per performance 

on a first-come-first-served basis. Performances will 

take place on Saturday, May 11 at 7.30pm, and 

Sunday, May 12 at 5pm and 7.30pm. 

All performances will be BSL interpreted. Of the 

hour-long performance, approximately 40 minutes 

takes place on the move. All performance areas are 

wheelchair accessible and there will be clusters of 

accessible seating available in each performance 

area.

ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY 

Once a working farm, and the home of the Stubbs 

family for more than 40 years, Heart of the Country 

Shopping Village is an iconic shopping experience 

just two miles from Lichfield. 

If you haven’t visited yet, Heart Of The Country 

Village is a shopping village with a difference. It is 

a perfect day out, with clothing and gift and home 

decor shops, restaurants, a children’s soft play and 

luxury services including hairdressing, beauty and 

dog grooming. 

But what makes Heart of the Country special is that, 

although situated just outside the city, it is nestled in 

peaceful countryside, away from the hustle and bustle 

of big retail parks. Sheltered from the road by a 

thick hedge, and boasting a natural woodland where 

children can roam, the courtyards are full of trees, 

flowers and greenery. 

Back in 1984, Lesley Stubbs swept out the pig barn 

and opened her first shop selling eggs, honey and

conversion of the red brick barns into workshops,

Throughout, the Stubbs’ have been careful to protect 

the traditional features of the buildings, preserving 

the integrity of the traditional farm buildings such 

as the threshing barn and the red-brick stables. 

Today, Heart of the Country Village is a symbol 

of lasting success and home to a variety of long 

standing businesses. Run by the sons of Lesley and 

Simon Stubbs and their wives, it offers unique items, 

skilled craftsmanship, and friendly service. 

A recent addition is the development of the Village 

woodland, a natural sanctuary complete with fairy 

doors and two friendly pigs. This green space 

welcomes visitors of all ages, including well-behaved 

dogs, to enjoy time in nature. 

Throughout the year, the Village hosts a variety 

of special events, such as the Step into Spring 

celebration in March and the Scarecrow Festival in 

October. These events embody the Village’s spirit of 

joy, creativity, and togetherness, drawing visitors from 

near and far to join in the festivities. 

To mark its 40th anniversary, Heart of the 

Country Village will be hosting a Big Birthday 

Party on Saturday, June 8, from 10am to 5pm 

- and everyone is invited to join the celebration 

with its family of retailers and restaurateurs. The 

celebration will feature fun games, artisan stalls, face 

painting, delicious street food from the eateries, live

Landlord Q&A 

At Jayman, we have a very busy lettings department dealing with landlords with one 

property, to those with excess of 30 buy to lets across the country. We frequently 

receive questions regarding what a landlord can and can’t do and have listed below 

some of the most frequently asked questions regarding buy to let properties. 

Can I increase the rent the tenant is paying? 

If the tenancy is within a fixed term period, you can only increase the rent if both parties agree. This is 

unlikely as the tenant is contracted to pay the rent as stated in the tenancy agreement until the end of the 

tenancy. It may be that you could negotiate a renewal agreement at the increased rent for a longer period 

of time that is remaining on the initial term to give the tenant assurance that the rent would not increase 

again within the next fixed period. 

If the tenancy is on a periodic tenancy after the expiry of the fixed term, you can serve notice to increase 

the rent. The minimum period for a rent increase is 1 month. 

How much notice do I need to give my tenant if I want to sell my property? 

If the tenant is in a fixed term tenancy, unless they agree to leave early, you cannot make them leave 

earlier than the end date of the tenancy. You must serve two months notice to end on the last day of the 

fixed tenancy to get the property back. 

If the tenancy is on a periodic tenancy, you can serve two months notice at any time. The end date must be 

in line with the rent payment date. Ie if the tenancy started on the 12th, you should serve notice from the 

12th to end on the 11th of the following month. 

Can I sell the property with the tenant still in? 

Yes. Although be advised that this limits the pool of buyers to buy to let landlords only as purchasers 

seeking to buy a property to live it in themselves will want assurances that the property will be empty at 

the planned point of completion. Another factor to bear in mind is that investor purchasers are looking for 

the most competitive price on an investment property whereas a owner occupier purchaser is looking for 

a “home” and often will pay more for the property. 

If there is any issue with the tenant moving out, this may mean the sale falls 

through. It is advisable to at least have served notice on the tenant before you 

start marketing the property for sale.

CREATING A BEE-FRIENDLY GARDEN 

What do David Beckham, Morgan Freeman, Ed 

Sheeran, Jeremy Clarkson and James Middleton 

have in common? They are all bee enthusiasts. 

But why are bees the bee’s knees? 

Bees are essential for the health of people and the 

planet. Honey and other products have medicinal 

properties, and the role of bees as pollinators makes 

them vital for food supplies. They pollinate 75 

percent of our food crops - estimates suggest it would 

cost UK farmers an incredible £1.8 billion a year to 

manually replicate their work. 

We all know the toll being taken on bees across the 

board – habitat loss, pesticide use, air pollution, 

changes in farming practices, a huge reduction in 

wildflower meadows, disease, climate change and 

invasive species are all contributing to the decline of 

both wild and honeybees. 

Did you know there are 1.6 billion bees in the UK, 

with up to 30 million in Birmingham alone. But 

how can you play your part? It’s so easy to feel 

overwhelmed in the face of multiple threats to both 

wild and honeybees, but there are many things we 

can do to help. 

Mowing the lawn less often to allow ‘weed’ flowers, 

avoiding pesticide use, providing water as well as 

nest sites in messy corners and bee boxes, planting 

trees and shrubs that bloom throughout the growing 

season and sowing bee-friendly seeds with the open, 

nectar rich flowers so crucial to supporting our 

pollinators – all these actions add up. Research has 

shown that home gardens in cities and towns are 

the biggest source of food for pollinating insects, 

providing around 85 per cent of the nectar produced 

in urban areas. 

Birmingham-based Brumblebee Seeds specialise in 

bee-friendly seeds. Founder Julia Watkins says: “Each 

border, each pot and hanging basket, each window 

box, each allotment bed – we want to make it easy 

to encourage and feed our bees, to enhance and 

beautify our gardens and to help in simple ways. 

“As we enter May there is no denying the innate will 

to growth – and we can safely begin to sow in the 

warming, drying soil. Now is the time to put into 

action all your gardening good intentions – including 

the introduction of pollinator-friendly plants to add 

beauty and interest throughout the growing season.

ways to do this is through seed sowing, and we have 

cultivated the perfect blend to ensure your garden 

will buzz and be beautiful.” 

The ideal time to sow bee-friendly Brumblebee Seeds 

is from mid-April (if the soil is warm enough) and 

throughout May. Chosen for their prettiness, ease 

of use and nectar-rich blooms, these hardy annuals 

can be sown directly into prepared soil amongst 

herbaceous perennials, into allotment beds and 

pots, or to fill gaps in borders – and will be in flower 

within a few months.

A MULTI-MILLION POUND REFURBISHMENT HAS BROUGHT A CITY 

CENTRE PUB BACK TO LIFE TO CREATE A WELCOME ADDITION TO THE 

LICHFIELD DINING SCENE, AS AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS 

In a city renowned for its foodie offerings, 

new openings in Lichfield are always 

bound to cause a bit of a stir. It’s a 

competitive market, so any new pretender 

has a lot to live up to if it wants to stand 

out from the crowd and make a name for 

itself. 

And that’s exactly what The Quill and 

Scholar is trying to do. 

The multi-million pound refurbishment 

of what once was The Crown in the heart 

of the city has been big news among the 

foodie faithful. The sizable venue has been 

taken over by award-winning pub company 

Heartwood Inns, which specialises in 

creating stylishly cosy venues which take pride of 

place at the centre of their communities. 

And The Quill and Scholar certainly delivers style in 

spades. The warm and welcoming bar offers plenty 

of space in which to enjoy drinks and bar snacks, 

while the stunning dining room is large enough to 

accommodate a whopping 122 guests. A gorgeous 

heated terrace to the rear of the pub is sure to be a 

popular spot when summer hits. 

The pub has been infused with Heartwood’s 

signature quirky style with design touches including 

a wood-burning fire, cosy snugs and House of 

Hackney fabric-covered banquettes. A large skylight 

to the rear of the pub has transformed this area into 

a light-filled garden room. 

The transformation is, indeed, impressive, and makes 

a real statement of intent. The name, too, a nod to 

the city’s history of academia, paying homage to 

famous sons including Samuel Johnson and Erasmus 

Darwin. 

With top marks for the setting, the question was 

whether the food could live up the surroundings. 

And ahead of the official opening, team J’AIME was 

invited along to discover for ourselves. 

We opted to enjoy a drink in the spacious bar before 

dinner and enjoy the warmth from the roaring fire - 

a most welcome reprieve from the unseasonal chills. 

The Quill and Scholar offers an impressive variety of 

aperitifs, spritzes, cocktails and signature gin serves, 

as well as bar snacks including popcorn, chorizo bites 

and rustica olives. 

We opted for a couple of spritzes - a rose petal spritz 

and a citrus version - both of which were perfectly 


efreshing, the citrus one in particular a perfect 

summer tipple. 

General manager Stuart Kennedy popped over 

to introduce us to the Heartwood Inns concept. 

Formerly manager at Swinfen Hall, Stuart is no 

stranger to the Lichfield dining scene, and was 

on hand all evening to ensure service standards 

remained impeccable throughout. 

Drinks done and table ready, we were shown through 

to the dining room, which was a hive of activity, 

packed with handpicked guests invited to put the 

kitchen and front-of-house teams through their 

paces. 

Ours was one of the cosy banquettes, perfect for an 

intimate evening of fine wine and good food. 

The menu offers elevated pub dining, where 

traditional classics such as pies, burgers and fish 

and chips sit alongside more premium fayre such as 

slow cooked duck and dressed crab, meaning there’s 

something to suit most palates. 

To start, I opted for that retro classic, the prawn 

cocktail - although The Quill and Scholar’s version 

mixes prawns and crayfish, with the option to add 

king prawn too. And who am I to say no to king 

prawn? Bound in a zesty lime mayonnaise and with 

the addition of avocado, it was a satisfying start 

to the meal - the enormous king prawn topper a 

particular delight. 

My husband chose the Morteau sausage salad with 

Burford Brown egg and a zingy Dijon mustard 

dressing, and was equally impressed. 

Onto the main event and we were spoilt for choice. 

The menu presents a hearty array of delicioussounding 

options including several mouth-watering 

fish and seafood options which I was sorely tempted 

by. But the lure of what is proving to be a Quill 

and Scholar signature was too strong. The slowcooked 

duck leg with dauphinoise potatoes poached, 

blackberries and blackberry sauce was a delectable 

plateful. The duck was beautifully pink and meltingly 

tender, with the sweet-sharp sauce cutting through 

the richness of the potatoes. 

My husband’s rump steak was also cooked to a 

perfect rare, with a seared crust adding a deep 

chargrilled flavour. A mound of crisp chips and a 

luscious roquefort sauce completed a satisfying meal. 

The portions, while not overwhelming, were certainly 

ample. But there’s always room for a sweet treat - 

and again, The Quill and Scholar delivered. My 

black cherry and chocolate mousse was decadent, 

a classic combination which never fails to please. 

But the standout was my husband’s 

pistachio souffle - a behemoth of a 

pud yet so light and airy, it was the 

perfect note to end on. 

It was back to the cocktail menu 

for a couple of after-dinner drinks 

- a salted caramel espresso martini 

for me and a Woodford Reserve 

old fashioned for him. Both were 

excellent serves and finished off a 

lovely meal in style. 

The Quill and Scholar is a welcome 

addition to the Lichfield dining 

scene, and is sure to appeal to a 

discerning clientele who prioritise 

quality, seasonality and style.

DELICIOUS, TAKES A LOOK AT SOME OF THE BEST SEASONAL PRODUCE TO USE RIGHT 

NOW. THIS MONTH, TWO EVERYDAY STAPLES COME INTO THEIR OWN 

As we head into the warmer months, great 

British staples are entering peak season. 

Meals are getting lighter, and salads 

are coming into their own - and where 

would a salad be without the humble 

tomato? Originating in Central and South 

America, tomatoes only arrived in Europe 

in the 16th Century, and it wasn’t until the 

1700s that they started being widely eaten 

in the UK. But today we eat tomatoes on 

a weekly, or even daily, basis and any of us 

even grow our own. 

The maritime air and sunny microclimate 

which enjoys more hours of sunshine than 

anywhere else in the UK means the Isle 

of Wight is the ideal spot for growing the tastiest 

tomatoes - and Isle of Wight tomatoes are the top 

choice for many chefs.

“Isle of Wight tomatoes are some of the best 

around,” says Jack. “They’re heritage varieties so 

they’re more flavourful, more savoury and almost 

meaty in texture. And because they’re from the UK, 

rather than being imported, they reach us in the best 

possible condition. We’ve actually already had our 

first batch in and they were incredibly ripe and full 

of flavour. Just serve them sliced and sprinkled with 

salt - delicious!” 

One of Jack’s signature dishes is sweet and sour 

tomatoes, which will star on the menu from now until 

the end of season in September. Taking tomatoes at 

their peak and preserving them in a vinegar-based 

liquor makes the most of this humble fruit, and 

Jack’s pairing with smoked ricotta, parsley emulsion 

and puffed pearl barley has proved a hit with diners. 

And here in the Midlands we have some incredible 

places where you can get the best strawberries 

around - and even pick your own. 

“New Farm in Lichfield is fantastic, as is Manor 

Farm,” says Jack. “From mid-May onwards, British 

strawberries will be at their peak - but make sure 

your strawberries are fully red, if there’s any white 

around the tops avoid as they’re not quite ready.” 

When it comes to making the most of your 

strawberries, Jack suggests keeping it simple. 

“The best way to serve strawberries is just with

nothing better, especially when you get the best 

British strawberries at the height of the season. 

“I also love vac-packing strawberries in Minus 8 

vinegar, which takes them to another level and adds 

a different dimension to your favourite fruit.” 

As champions of the best of British produce, 

Dubberley Delicious have announced a new 

partnership with a local English winemaker. Astley 

Vineyard is a family run, single estate vineyard in 

Worcestershire and home to some of the oldest vines 

in the country. 

“They make small batches of wines, and they make 

whatever’s good that particular year, so the varieties 

change,” says Jack. “Their most populous grape is 

the kerner, which was planted in 1971, and makes 

some beautiful wines including their Brigid, which 

is a sweeter wine, almost like a dessert wine, but not 

quite, which was a personal favourite. 

“They also make a piquette, which is sort of a cross 

between a cask ale, craft cider and a wine spritzer

and is made using the grape skins. It’s what grape 

pickers would traditionally drink while harvesting, 

because it’s refreshing and lower in alcohol. 

“Astley produces three types, and we’ve got their 

blackberry version, which is a really delicious, 

really different drink. It’s great to be able to offer 

something a bit out of the ordinary, and hopefully 

people will be interested to try it.” 

Sweet and sour 

tomatoes 

Ingredients: 

For the liquor: 

100g sherry vinegar 

250g honey - ideally local 

2 cloves of garlic, peeled and cracked to release the 

flavour 

Sprigs of thyme 

Selection of baby tomatoes of your choice 

JACK’S SIGNATURE 

SWEET AND SOUR 

TOMATOES 

Pierce the top and bottom of each tomato and put in a pan 

of boiling salted water for around 15 to 30 seconds until 

you see the skin start to peel back. Refresh in ice water 

and leave until completely cold. 

Bring your liquor ingredients to the boil then pour over 

your cold tomatoes and leave to steep for at least 24 hours 

before eating. Your tomatoes will keep in the fridge for 

several weeks so make a batch and use throughout the 

season. For a vegan version, replace the honey with maple 

syrup or agave syrup. 

Use in salads, or pair with a cheese like ricotta, burrata or 

mozzarella and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, and serve with 

a light, crisp rosé for an elegant lunch or light supper.

A fiesta of flavour 

LICHFIELD’S THYME KITCHEN EMBARK ON A CULINARY JOURNEY TO 

DESTINATIONS LIKE SPAIN, GREECE, ITALY, AND MEXICO WITH THEIR 

MONTHLY THEME EVENINGS. HERE THEY SHARE A FLAVOURSOME 

FIESTA FROM MEXICO 

Thyme Kitchen are bringing the zest and vibrancy 

of Mexico to your table with irresistible Prawn 

Tostadas. Bursting with fresh ingredients, this 

dish was a standout hit from one of their spirited 

Mexican-themed evenings. Whether you’re hosting 

an intimate gathering or entertaining a lively crowd, 

these tostadas are a fun, interactive dining experience 

where each guest can craft their own tostada. Get 

ready to savour the flavours of Mexico right in your 

own home! 

Prawn Tostadas 

- Serves four 

Ingredients: 

300g prawns, cooked 

1 cucumber 

1 red onion 

1 each red and green chili 

1 avocado 

2 large tomatoes 

Juice of 1 lime 

Salt to season 

1 tsp paprika 

1 tsp cumin 

1 small bunch coriander 

4 small tortilla wraps 

Optional sour cream 

Oil for cooking 

For the salsa: 

4-6 medium tomatoes peeled and finely 

chopped or use small can of drained 

chopped tomatoes 

1/2 red onion, very finely chopped 

1 small garlic clove, finely chopped 

small splash of white wine vinegar 

1/2 lime, juiced 

1/2 bunch of coriander, roughly chopped 

Method: 

In a frying pan, add 100ml of cooking oil, 

ensuring the base of your pan is covered. 

Bring up to a high heat and fry off the tortilla 

until golden brown, making sure to flip for 

even colour (approx 30-45 seconds per side). 

Remove from the pan and leave to cool on 

kitchen roll to soak up any excess oil. 

Dice the onion, chilli and tomato and add to 

the bowl with the cooked prawns. Add the 

paprika, cumin and lime juice and mix well 

before roughly chopping the coriander and 

adding to the mix. Season the mix with salt to 

taste. 

In a separate bowl, add the avocado and a 

pinch of salt, mash until chunky. 

Now for your really simple salsa. Combine 

the tomatoes, red onion, garlic, white wine 

vinegar, lime juice and coriander in a bowl, 

giving it a really good stir to mix. You can 

make this ahead of serving your tostadas and 

keep refrigerated until you are ready to serve. 

Build your prawn tostada by spooning the 

prawn mixture onto your tortilla and add the 

avocado. Serve with salsa and optional sour 

cream.

Armed Forces Day is the Nation’s chance to show support for the people who make up the Armed 

Forces community: from currently serving service personnel to their families, veterans and cadets. 

At the National Memorial Arboretum, they will be marking this event across two days, with a range 

of fun interactive family activities. There will be a whole host of free activities for the whole family 

to enjoy, including climbing walls, Segways, archery, zipline, a free-drop airbag and much more. 

Live music will soundtrack the celebrations; and visitors will be able to listen to lots of fantastic 

performances over the weekend. 

Entry to the event is free, although parking charges will apply. Due to expected high visitor numbers,

GETTING YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER 

This month we focus on financial protection. The risk of 

losing family members who provide financially for family 

members/dependents in the sense of death or illness 

can be highly catastrophic. This isn’t just an emotional 

consideration but a financial one too. 

The same can be said for businesses who lose key people, 

directors or shareholders in the same way. This, too, can 

be financially damaging and hugely problematic legally 

causing huge stress and cost at the most difficult of times. 

I explore some key aspects to consider on these topics and 

how to attempt to establish a plan/plans to ensure that 

you are protected from these risks. 

WHAT ARE THE MAIN RISKS OF LOSING A KEY 

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTOR? 

I think it is safe to say that we all insure our car, our home 

and our holidays against various risks. What we probably 

don’t fully consider is protecting the breadwinners who 

provide a source of income to cover living costs and 

ensure any debts can be repaid. 

If you have dependents and liabilities such as mortgages 

or other debts, the question is how would these costs be 

covered in the absence of a key financial contributor to 

the household either through illness or death? 

Start by working out what cover you have in savings or 

insurance policies and how long these would last. Is it 

enough? One other thing to consider is the suitability for 

your needs. Do they cover what is required for as long as is 

required? 

You may wish to explore ‘Income Protection’. This 

provides income for a time and to a certain extent where 

someone is unable to work due to illness or injury. 

‘Life and Serious Illness insurance’ can provide a costeffective 

way of protecting the family and cover any 

liabilities, medical expenses and other living costs. It is 

important to ensure that the level of cover and term are 

suitable and also to consider using trusts to protect your 

estate from inheritance tax (more on this later). 

‘Private Medical Insurance’ and ‘Health Care plans’, 

can provide cover for medical, dental, optician and other 

expenses for all of the family. All of which can allow the 

consistent financial functioning of the family unit to be 

maintained when needed. 

It makes sense to review this regularly and ensure that you 

have the financial protection that meets your needs and 

seeking advice to review the market for the best solutions 

is key. 

BUSINESSES – WHAT ARE THE RISKS 

Losing key people who contribute to the business 

financially should NOT be underestimated. Replacing 

profitability is essential to protect the business and its 

obligations – debts, employees etc….. 

Furthermore shareholders should establish an appropriate 

agreement on what happens to their shares in the event 

of death or suffering a serious illness. That would involve 

a suitable agreement, though care should be taken on the 

tax consequences of any agreement as there are a number 

of options. 

Both may involve establishing appropriate insurance 

to facilitate the best outcome and advice here is 

ESSENTIAL. 

TO SUMMARISE 

Assessing what your needs are both individually and 

as a business are key. Taking professional advice is very 

important too. The net effect of having assets, including 

life/health insurance, can substantially add to the value 

of your estate and the way that is treated for inheritance 

tax varies accordingly. Having understanding of this and 

appropriate arrangements will affect what passes to your 

next of kin. Inheritance tax is chargeable at 40% above 

the band thresholds that you qualify for at the time of 

assessment. 

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be

and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You 

may get back less than you invested.
