AND THE BEAST
It’s one of the festive season’s most enduring
traditions; a slice of good old British entertainment
and, often, a first foray into theatre for the younger
members of the family. That’s right; Christmas just
wouldn’t be Christmas for many of us without a trip
to the panto.
At theatres across the land, the festive season is
marked with cries of ‘He’s behind you!’ and ‘Oh no
it isn’t’, as audiences cheer the goodies and boo the
villains while panto dames ensure chaos ensues with
the requisite bucket (or vat!) of slosh.
And Lichfield is no exception. The Lichfield
Garrick’s showpiece panto is a highlight of the
theatre calendar for audiences and staff alike, with
tickets for each year’s show snapped up by eager
punters looking for that little bit of festive magic to
share with their family.
This year, it’s the turn of Beauty and the Beast to
get the panto treatment, complete with magic and
mayhem from a star-studded cast accompanied by
lavish sets, fantastic music and beautiful costumes.
But as the cost of living continues to spiral, even the
theatre’s most accessible show has become a financial
stretch too far for some.
Cultural experiences hold a special place in our
hearts, and they have an undeniable impact on our
mental wellbeing. So this Christmas, the Garrick is
once again on a mission to bring smiles to the faces
of families in the region who have weathered a tough
year with its heartwarming Christmas Ticket Appeal,
calling on the support of local businesses to join
together and make a meaningful difference to people

in the community.
“The Garrick charity is here to provide
theatre for everyone who lives in
Lichfield and the surrounding area,
so it really matters to us when people
face barriers to coming to see a show
or getting involved,” says Garrick CEO
and artistic director Daniel Buckroyd.
“One of those barriers is the
affordability of tickets, especially with
the cost-of-living crisis many families
are facing at the moment, and so our
Christmas Ticket Appeal, generously
supported by local businesses and
Garrick ticket buyers, is one of the
ways we try to ensure that anyone can
experience the magic of live theatre at this time of
year.”
The Garrick has teamed up with local charities
including Lichfield Foodbank, Spark Burntwood,
Lichfield City of Sanctuary, Pathway Project,
BLAST and One Lichfield, to ensure tickets get to
families most in need.
“These charities support those within our community
who have experienced financial hardship, abuse, face
discrimination or exclusion and support diversity and
equality,” says Daniel.
“Ticket donations have a huge impact on families in
our community. It allows families to have a few hours
of escapism and laugh and smile together, creating
magical memories with us. It’s very humbling to
the team at Lichfield Garrick Arts Charity that
we can work with organisations, charities and the
community to bring this scheme to fruition each year
and together make a difference.”
Since the inception of this heartwarming initiative

in 2017, more than 500 families have been able
to attend Lichfield Garrick’s enchanting panto, all
thanks to the generosity of local businesses. These
tickets provide much-needed escapism and magic
during the festive season, creating lasting memories
for families who otherwise might not have had the
opportunity.
And Beauty and the Beast is certainly set to be a
festive showstopper.
“We’re really pulled out all the stops this year - a
hilarious new script, a brilliantly talented cast,
including the return of Sam Rabone as our Dame
teaming up with his old comedy sparring partner
Ben Thornton, a great playlist of songs and dance
routines AND the return of slosh - you can’t beat a
bit of panto mess!” says Daniel.
“Everyone who works on panto instinctively knows
just what a special time of year it is for a theatre and
the community it serves - families coming together
for their big annual theatre trip, children getting
their first time in an auditorium - so there’s a brilliant
spirit in the building as the team pulls together to
give everyone an amazing experience.”
Garrick panto dame Sam Rabone, who will be
starring as Madame Fillop in Beauty and the Beast,
is no stranger to Christmas in Lichfield. The show
marks his impressive eighth festive outing at the
theatre.
“It’s special! There is something very special about
doing a panto local to home, and even more special
being asked back year on year,” Sam says.
“This is the eighth time they’ve agreed to let me back
in the building and I can’t wait to see some friendly
faces in the audience. The Lichfield crowd is great
which makes being on the Garrick stage even more
fun. It’s a complete mix of people, families and
groups coming so every day something different gets

a laugh. And it’s great that people get to know me,
and wives and girlfriends are picking seats purely so I
can pick on their partners!
“Beauty and the Beast is very different to any of our
other pantomimes, which I think will make this show
extra special. It’s the first time Lichfield has had this
title, and it’s such a classic fairy tale I can’t believe
we’ve never done it before.
“Beauty is much more musical than any of our other
shows, which means when I get to do some comedy
it’s going to be even more fun. We’ve got some
amazing singers from across the UK and West End
too, so they will really bring the musical to life.”
With panto, the audience always knows to expect the
unexpected. So, are there any surprises in store?
“Well if I told you that it wouldn’t be a surprise now
would it!” laughs Sam. “I will tell you one thing....
we’ve bought back the slosh this year! Oui Oui!”
Slosh aside, Madame Fillop is set to be a memorable
character for the Lichfield audience.
“Madame Fillop is mother to Belle and Phillipe, she’s
the typical panto dame, poor and widowed, so gents
look out, sitting on the second row won’t keep you
safe,” says Sam. “My favourite thing about being a
dame is the laughs, the ridiculousness and of course
all the amazing costumes.”
Sam will be reunited with comedy sparring partner
Ben Thornton, who will be taking on the role of
Madame Fillop’s son, Phillipe.
“I put in a restraining order - but the people of
Lichfield spoke and so we agreed to have him back.
He’s already demanded my dressing room!” laughs
Sam.
“No, I joke; when Daniel started at the theatre I
begged him to get Ben back in the panto, and that’s
what he’s done. Myself and Ben can NOT wait to
bring you all the laughs this
year.”
With many pantos under
his belt, what are Sam’s
favourite aspects of the
festive season at the
theatre?
“I don’t think there’s
anything I don’t like,
I even like getting up
early for rehearsals,” he
says. “There’s something
special about pantomime,
the friends you make,
the laughs you have and
generally just getting to be

silly for two months. But in all, my favourite thing is
the Garrick audiences, they love the show and are
behind us (oh no they aren’t) every step of the way!”
This summer, the Garrick celebrated its milestone
20th anniversary by focusing on bringing more of
the arts into the Lichfield community. And with the
Christmas Ticket Appeal, the theatre is ending the
year on the same note.
“Hundreds of people joined us when we threw our
doors open for a birthday celebration back in July,
but for us the focus was always going to be on a year
of community engagement rather than just a party,
so our team have been out in schools, colleges and
community settings over the last few months helping
all kinds of groups to realise a creative ambition,”
says Daniel.
“In 2024 we’ll be building on that by welcoming
more community groups into the Garrick itself.
We’re also planning to take a Garrick production on
tour into community venues across the region, begin
the process of upgrading our facilities for audiences
and launching a new five-year plan to make sure
the Garrick is thriving and at the heart of the
community in another 20 years.”

Giving the gift of
play this Christmas

PLAYTIME THIS CHRISTMAS AND BEYOND, THANKS TO ITS GIVE THE GIFT OF PLAY APPEAL
For many people the idea of
children excitedly unwrapping
gifts to play with and having fun is
what Christmas is all about. They
will lovingly browse and pick out
just the perfect toy for the little
ones in their lives. But sadly, for
many children with disabilities or
terminal illness, playing is much
more complex.
Often toys from the High Street
just don’t meet their needs. They
may have physical or learning
delays or a disability, they may be
losing their sight, their hearing, or
don’t have the muscle control they
need to play.
But sensory toys can make all the difference – which
is why one Staffordshire-based charity sends specialist
toys out on loan to families to help their child enjoy
the gift of play.
Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children, based in
Cannock, provides sensory toys on loan for 12 weeks
through its Play Therapy Pod service. With a variety
of pods available, there are toys to suit different ages
and developmental needs.
But there is often a long waiting list for the pods, with
nearly 300 children currently waiting for the service.
And specialist toys are often costly, putting them out
of reach for many families, especially with the costof-living
at a high. Each pod costs Newlife around
£500 to carefully create with just the right toys.
Now Newlife has launched a Christmas campaign
to raise funds, and is hoping that people’s generosity
through the festive season means more children who
have difficulty playing will be able to use specialist
toys throughout the year ahead.
Newlife has been helping to change the lives of

disabled children and their families for more than
30 years. As the UK’s largest charity provider
of specialist disability equipment, such as beds,
wheelchairs and portable hoists, Newlife provides
equipment both as permanent grants and as loans
when there is a medical need and a family is in crisis.
It also provides a free Nurse Helpline where families
find support, a listening ear and condition specific
information.
“Many disabilities and illnesses mean that children
can struggle to play, but the right toys can improve
development and motor function, help families bond
and even distract from pain,” says Heather Hill,
Newlife’s Play Therapy Pod manager.
“But sensory toys can be expensive, so the loan
service also helps families try before they decide to
buy similar toys themselves.
“The loans of sensory toys are incredibly popular
and families can apply for a new loan when their
current one is coming to an end, so their child always
has something new to help stimulate them and help
with their development. We hear how excited the

whole family gets when the pods arrive – it can be
quite magical.”
The sensory toy loans from Newlife are something
two-year-old Amelia Pepper and her family very
much look forward to receiving. Amelia has, so far,
received four of Newlife’s pods containing different
sensory toys to encourage her development through
play.
Described by her mum Sian Lawrence as ‘a true
miracle’, Amelia is the only recorded person with
her unique genetic sequence. As a result of her
condition, she needs to be tube fed, is partially
sighted, and has decreased muscle tone, so she can’t
sit up on her own, walk or crawl. But her head
control is developing and, despite doctors believing
she would never speak, Amelia now says a few words,
including mum, dad and hello.
“Amelia’s favourite time is when she’s in her sensory
room, which was fundraised through family and
friends, and she loves being in there,” says Sian.
“The sensory toys on loan from Newlife are
great additions to the room and really help her
development - it’s lovely to see her interact, play and
learn. The toys always arrive quickly and it’s a lovely
surprise to see what’s in the box – there are so many
kinds of pods and toys to explore!”
Amelia’s favourite toy so far is an elephant with
switch buttons attached which she can tap with her
fingers and toes to make it sing songs and wiggle its
ears. She also especially enjoys the colourful toys
with music and lights which help incorporate play
in her day-to-day development. This has helped her
be able to track things with her fingers as well as her
sight and develop her hand and eye coordination and
head control.
“Newlife’s sensory toys are also a great distraction
when she’s in pain or we are waiting for

hands,” Sian adds.
“There are so many toys we just
wouldn’t have known about without
the loans from Newlife. They help
us discover what really appeals
to Amelia, which can sometimes
be a real surprise, and there have
been several which have made it
on to her Christmas and birthday
lists as we know she gets a lot out
of them, which with the current
cost of living is better than buying
things we don’t know for sure she
will enjoy.”

If you’re opting for a real Christmas tree
this year, Byron Lewis, from Lichfield
Garden Centre, has some top tips for
choosing a festive centrepiece to suit your
needs.
Christmas trees form the focal point
of most living rooms during the festive
season, so here are a few tips if you are
thinking of having a real Christmas tree this
year.
Choose your variety carefully; traditional
Norway Spruce have a good shape and
smell great, but they are really best suited
to unheated rooms or outside porches,
because central heating and warmth will
cause their needles to drop.
Nordmann Firs are by far the most popular
tree today. These are soft to touch, easy
to decorate and, best of all, have superb
needle retention. They will still look good
into the new year if looked after correctly.
You may also see Fraser Firs offered at
the garden centre. These also have good
needle retention but are generally more
compact, making them great for smaller
rooms.
Your tree will need a stand of some
description. Attractive coloured metal
stands with a reservoir are popular – the
trunk of your tree will drop into the stand
and can be bolted in position. Plastic
buckets will do the same job, but you’ll
need to add some weight either with
stones or gravel and sand.
Your tree will need water – larger trees can
take up to three pints a day, so remember
to check your stand regularly and keep it
topped up.
If you buy a potted or pot-grown tree,
these can be used year after year. Just
remember if they are taken into a warm
room for Christmas, they will need to get
used to the outside temperatures again
after Christmas. Put them in a garage
or cold greenhouse for a few weeks to
acclimatise your tree before moving it
outside.

TOP TIPS FOR ENSURING YOUR CHRISTMAS DINNER IS A FEAST TO REMEMBER
It’s the season for feasting, and the one meal of the
year which many of us spend hours upon hours
slaving over to ensure our loved ones are greeted with
a dinner to remember.
However, here’s a tendency to overcomplicate things
and do too much, says Jack Dubberley. But by
keeping it simple and looking at ways to pack each
element with plenty of flavour, you’ll ensure the
season’s showpiece dinner hits all the right notes.
Jack sticks to traditional turkey, but opts for a turkey
breast joint rather than a whole bird, which he
butterflies and stuffs with homemade stuffing made
from sausagemeat, cranberries soaked in marsala,
herbs and some spices.
“It’s worth the extra effort to preorder your turkey
from a butcher, rather than going to the supermarket
if you can,” says Jack. “it doesn’t actually cost too
much more, and you know it’ll be fresh and ready
exactly when you want to collect it.
“We tend to get ours from Walter Smith in Lichfield
and a good sized breast joint to feed the family costs
around £40-£50. You know it’s going to be great
quality, which you just can’t guarantee with the
supermarkets.
“On Christmas Day, take your turkey out of the
fridge an hour or so before you start cooking to
take the chill off. Otherwise, you’re going to put a
lot of heat on the outside but the inside will still be
cold so it’s going to take longer to cook and it won’t
rest properly. Don’t worry about it being out of the
fridge, because any bacteria will get killed in the
oven.”
When it comes to cooking your turkey, Jack says
butter is the essential element, while he tends to leave
off the streaky bacon many people add to allow the
bird’s skin to properly crisp.
“Fill the bottom of your tray with plenty of veg to
raise the turkey off the bottom, and to give you a
good base for the gravy,” says Jack. “Carrots, celery,
onion, garlic, herbs and a bit of lemon are all good
additions, then start your turkey off in a preheated
oven at 200 degrees for the first half an hour to get a

nice colour, give it a baste then turn the oven down
to 180 degrees and pop it back in for another 45
minutes before starting to check it.”
One of the biggest mistakes people make with turkey,
says Jack, is overcooking the bird in the oven and not
letting it rest properly.
“When you check the turkey - the best way to do it is
with a meat probe - you’re looking for around 55 to
58 degrees. That’s not fully cooked, but that’s what
you want because when you take the turkey out the
residual heat will keep cooking the meat through
while it’s resting. And a large bird like a turkey will
need a good hour of resting.”
Make your gravy by heating the turkey pan on the
hob, deglazing with a light red wine like a pinot noir
or a madeira to get those juices going.

“The key to gravy is to reduce it for
as long as possible,” says Jack. “The
more you reduce it, the thicker your
gravy will be and the more intense
the flavour, meaning you’ll have to
add less of your thickening agent. If
you’ve got plenty of time, spend it on
your gravy! Add some turkey stock
too, if you have it - Waitrose actually
has great quality stock - then use just
enough thickening agent to get the
right consistency. You want a really
thick gravy for turkey - we’re not
looking for a jus here!”
When it comes to roasties, Jack says
the best readily available potato is the
Maris Piper. Peel and cut to your desired size then
gently boil in well-salted water while you heat your
chosen fat in the oven.
“You’re aiming to flavour the potato at every step so
don’t skimp on the salt, then boil until the edges just
start to give,”says Jack. “Drain and give them a shake
to rough up the edges so they get nice and crispy.
“For the best Christmas roasties, goose or duck fat
give the best flavour. You need to make sure your
oven is hot, because if it’s not hot enough you’ll just
create steam rather than roasting them. Ideally, you
want roasties in the oven by themselves. Pop them
in for 20 minutes to start then give them a toss and
continue to roast until they’re nicely golden.”
While the temptation is to opt for a vast array of
vegetable accompaniments, Jack suggests three side
dishes is enough to give a good balance of flavours
and textures without leaving your guests in a food
coma. Foil-baked carrots with butter and orange
juice, honey-roasted parsnips and a rich cauliflower
cheese are the top picks for the Dubberleys’ festive

If sprouts are a seasonal must, don’t be tempted to
just boil or steam them, says Jack. Instead halve them
and gently saute in a pan on the hob in some butter
to take the bite out and give a bit of colour, then add
some flavouring.
“The classic combination is chestnuts and bacon,”
says Jack. “But we’d go for miso paste, which gives
a great Asian-inspired flavour. You want to enhance
your veg and pack it with flavour, which you won’t do
by boiling and steaming.
“When choosing veg you want to create lots of
different flavour profiles, so you’ll get a savouriness
from the sprouts, sweetness from carrots or parsnips,
and a richness from the cauli cheese. It’s about
creating balance.”
With the main course sorted, Jack suggests eschewing
a large, formal starter in favour of some smaller bites
which can be made in advance and served as guests
arrive.
Which brings us to dessert and, somewhat
controversially, traditional Christmas pudding doesn’t
make an appearance here. Instead, Jack suggests
opting for something lighter to satisfy
your sweet tooth after a heavy festive
feast.
“Our family favourite is a lime
cheesecake, which is so nice and
fresh,” says Jack. “It’s refreshing and
a bit different, and not heavy like
your Christmas pudding.
“For the biscuit base we use
chocolate chip cookies, then make
the filling with cream cheese,
evaporated milk, lime jelly and
lime juice to flavour, then top with
chocolate flakes and lime zest - it’s
delicious!”

RED IS THE COLOUR TO BE SEEN IN TO ADD A TOUCH OF SPICE TO YOUR
WARDROBE AS WE HEAD INTO THE FESTIVE SEASON, SAYS AMY NORBURY
IT’S a colour imbued with drama yet, at the same time, it’s
as classic a hue as camel or navy. And it’s been making waves
across the AW23 catwalks as the standout colour of choice.
That’s right, we’re getting ready to see red this season as the
fieriest shade around leaps to the fashion fore.
Vibrant, take-no-prisoners red has been a designer favourite
since long before lauded shoe designer Christian Louboutin’s
signature red lacquered soles became the hottest ticket in
footwear. And now Ferragamo’s creative director Maximilian
Davis has embraced the shade wholeheartedly - but he’s not
the only one, with the likes of Prada, Bottega Veneta and
Fendi all incorporating reds aplenty into their autumn/winter
lineups.
And with a plethora of party-ready reds hitting the high
streets, it’s the perfect hue to go for if you want to stand out
from the crowd at your hot festive tickets.
From bold cherry and lipstick-bright scarlet to deep red wine,
there’s a red out there for everyone; the question is: which is
yours?
The key is choosing the right red to complement your skin
tone. If you’re cooler skinned, look for reds with a blue base,
such as raspberry, cherry or crimson, while warmer tones
should gravitate towards scarlets, poppy or ruby reds to
enhance their warmer colouring. And while there may be an
old adage that says redheads shouldn’t wear red, that couldn’t
be farther from the truth. A jewel-toned red will bring out
your natural luscious locks to their best - and is a surefire way
to stand out from the crowd!
Red in 2023 may demand to be front and centre, worn headto-toe
for maximum impact; however, if you’re not ready to
make that kind of commitment, red pairs beautifully with a
whole range of colours to create a variety of different looks.
Opt for navy for a classic pairing, go with black for pared
down elegance or team with summer’s favourite pinks for ontrend
chic.
For autumn, invest in a red knit to pair with maxi skirts and
boots, or swap your trusty leather jacket for a red velour biker
number or oversized blazer. And as the festive season takes
over, red will be the hue to wear for all of your Christmas
events.
Don’t forget the accessories, too; a red bag or shoes can add a
touch of spice to any outfit without breaking the bank.

WINTER HAS OFFICIALLY ARRIVED, AND WITH IT COMES CRUNCHY SNOW WALKS, CHRISTMAS
MARKETS AND COSY NIGHTS IN. BUT WHILE WE MAY CHERISH THESE SEASONAL DELIGHTS, THE
COLDER MONTHS POSE CHALLENGES FOR OUR SKIN. WE ASKED ROYAL FACIALIST AND FOUNDER
OF HEAVEN SKINCARE DEBORAH MITCHELL TO SHARE HER SECRETS TO MAINTAINING A
HEALTHY, RADIANT COMPLEXION
Winter can be both enchanting and
unforgiving, and it’s no secret that it can
wreak havoc on your complexion. The
drop in humidity leads to reduced moisture
in the air, causing our skin to lose its natural
hydration. As a result, dryness, redness
and flakiness become all too familiar. The
harsh winds can exacerbate these problems,
leaving your skin feeling sensitive, tight and
irritated.
Gentle Cleansing: Use a gentle,
hydrating cleanser that won’t strip your
natural oils. The allure of hot showers
during the winter can be undeniable, but
stick to lukewarm water for washing your
face to prevent unnecessary dryness. And
remember, exfoliation should be gentle and
less frequent during colder weather to avoid
further drying out your skin. My Hydro
Cleansing Milk uses organic jojoba, the closest match to
our own natural oil, to cleanse, balance and condition.
Hydration Is Key: Keeping your skin hydrated is
crucial. As the largest organ of the body, it is exposed to
many external factors that cause damage and premature
ageing. When your skin is dehydrated, you’ll notice it
appears rough and uneven; keep it properly hydrated and
you can achieve a smooth, glowing complexion. If you
need a bit of a boost, reach for one of my Hydrogels to
restore balance and help to maintain the moisture levels.
Because they remain tacky, they also make the perfect base
for your foundation.
Use A Serum: Serums are highly concentrated, allowing
them to deliver potent ingredients deeper into the skin.
This makes them effective for addressing specific concerns
that might worsen in winter, such as dullness, uneven
tone or signs of ageing. Apply after cleansing and before
your moisturiser to boost the effectiveness of your other
skincare products. Use my Dream Oil Serum in tandem
with a daily moisturiser – you only need a small amount
and you’ll find a few drops go a long way.
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise: It’s time to
switch out your lightweight moisturiser for a richer cream.
It will provide a protective barrier that keeps the skin
supple and prevents that uncomfortable tight feeling.
Well-hydrated skin tends to show fewer signs of ageing,
so choose a moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid, as
this work wonders to locking in moisture and provide
nourishment. Try my Love Your Skin, that also contains
silk protein to soften your complexion and plump fine
lines.
Healing Hands: Our hands are often the first victims of
winter’s wrath so combat dryness and cracking by keeping
a nourishing hand cream close by. Regular application
is your secret weapon against the elements. Treat your
