St. Petersburg
Extracts from Essays on the St. Petersburg exchange
written by students from 2s.
Mathilde Myrup:
It is trendy for school classes to go on exchange trips to
different places. At my gymnasium many classes before
me have gone to St. Petersburg on an exchange trip. Other
classes have been in Italy, Austria, France, Germany or
Great Britain. But in St. Petersburg, there is an exciting
history and many things to see, so that is why our gymnasium
has decided to send some of their classes to St. Petersburg
– mostly the social studies-classes. Our seniors
went to Saint Petersburg last year and they told us horrorstories
about it, so we were very excited and a bit nervous
to visit Saint Petersburg, because we had so many prejudices…
The mornings started very early, but I always slept an hour
longer because the family was going to their jobs/school.
It started with a bath and the breakfast normally consisted
of a sandwich or yoghurt with tea or coffee. Afterwards we
took the bus or the underground train. My Russian friend
paid for everything, especially the transport. The Russian
people are very polite and positive, and they will do everything
for their guests.
Every day was timetabled. We visited a gymnasium, the
brewery “Baltica”, the educational program “The conquest
of outer space”, The Hermitage, the Cathedral of Resurrection
(Our Savior on the Blood), the Russian Museum,
Kazan Cathedral and the ballet – which was the best of
all.
was nearly my age, and perhaps the most interesting thing
in meeting Boris was that when I entered his fl at I soon
discovered that we had a lot in common. In his room I saw
that he had a laptop, I believe that it was a new one. And
on his shelf I saw the same video games that I played at
home in my little room. Besides the videogames I saw the
DVDs and there were also some of them I could recognize.
For an example there was STAR WARS, The Return of The
Sith and it went on and on. I even discovered that we had
the same taste in music. This was astonishing to me,
because I have never thought in my wildest dreams that
one day I would be standing in the middle of a room, many
