Olafur Eliasson invites the reader into his library to show us 25 of his many autonomous
artist’s books. He talks about motivation, ideas, about form and design, about collaborations
with producers and browses through his books in long series of images. Despite
the manifold forms of appearance, his authorship is always clearly recognisable. The
layout of this book and the various glimpses of his other books give us an idea of what
his preferences are. He devotes great attention to small, inconspicuous books and often
changes the perspective in the process. It is captivating to see how important and existential
these seemingly marginal pieces are to the artist’s large œuvre.
The conclusion of the book is made up of a scientifi c catalogue raisonné of all published
books by, with or about him. It begins with No. 1, 1997 and ends with this publication
itself, No. 57.
Olafur Eliasson lädt den Leser in seine Bibliothek ein, um 25 seiner zahlreichen
autonomen Künstlerbücher zu zeigen. Er spricht über den Anlass, die Idee, über Form
und Gestaltung, über die Zusammenarbeit mit Produzenten und blättert in langen
Abbildungsfolgen in seinen Büchern. Trotz vielfältiger Erscheinungsformen ist die
Autorenschaft immer deutlich zu erkennen. Sein Layout und der unterschiedliche
Blick in die Bücher lassen seine Vorlieben erkennen. So widmet er kleinen, unscheinbaren
Büchern große Aufmerksamkeit und wechselt dabei häufi g die Perspektive. Es
ist hinreißend zu erleben, wie wichtig und existenziell dem Künstler diese scheinbar
marginale Arbeit seines großen Œuvre ist.
Den Schluss des Buches bildet ein wissenschaftliches Werkverzeichnis aller von ihm,
mit oder über ihn erschienen Bücher. Es beginnt bei No. 1, 1997 und endet mit der
