In one point there was little or no change . As in Mexico in 1986, once
again only approximately 20 percent of the goals resulted from free
kicks and corners, standard and dead ball situations . 24 of these goals
were scored from a direct free kick, eleven from an indirect free kick.
Eight goals were scored from corners . This was by no means an impressive
tally since a good 500 corners were taken in the 52 games . Admittedly,
the organization of the defences has improved in such situations
too, yet such a poor quota also reveals a lack of variation in this respect .
Five out of a total of 18 penalties were not converted . Bilek, Vialli, Sosa,
Hadzibegic and Scifo were the culprits in the first round games, whereas
all seven attempts after that were crowned with success, a fact which
confirmed that good nerves of the players concerned .
In the knock-out games from the second round on, the teams approached
their matches with more caution than they did in the first round
group games . At the group-game stage 35 .5 percent of the goals were
scored in the first half, while in the direct knock-out games this tally sank
to 15 .1 percent . In the round of the last sixteen, for example, the Czech
Skuhravy was the only man to score a first-half goal out of a total of 18
goals in all ; eight of these goals were on the other hand netted only in
the last quarter of an hour of the game .
This last phase of the game produced most goals overall . 28 .7 percent of
all the shots that successfully landed in the back of net were taken between
the 76th and 90th minute . There were two reasons for this . On the
one hand, the strength of the players began to diminish and on the other
they were either endeavouring hard or simply compelled by this stage to
correct the result in the final section of the game . No particular team -
provided an exception here, none was particularly weak in this connection
and none particularly efficient . This only serves to emphasize the
generalized nature of this development .
