Futurism, Irred<strong>en</strong>tism and Tr<strong>en</strong>t<strong>in</strong>o<br />

Filippo Tommaso Mar<strong>in</strong>etti launched the Futurism movem<strong>en</strong>t on February 20 th 1909<br />

wh<strong>en</strong> the Fo<strong>und</strong><strong>in</strong>g Manifesto was published on the front page of Le Figaro <strong>in</strong> Paris.<br />

Though Futurism was a literary and artistic movem<strong>en</strong>t, Mar<strong>in</strong>etti and his followers also<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved themselves <strong>in</strong> the political affairs of the day. The first manifesto <strong>in</strong>cluded the<br />

declaration that war was the “sole hygi<strong>en</strong>e of the world”. The object of much of this<br />

viol<strong>en</strong>t <strong>en</strong>ergy was the Austro-Hungarian Empire, whose possession of the ethnically<br />

Italian regions aro<strong>und</strong> the cities of Trieste and Tr<strong>en</strong>to angered the Futurists. Int<strong>en</strong>se<br />

anti-Austrian feel<strong>in</strong>g characterised the early years of the movem<strong>en</strong>t and Irred<strong>en</strong>tism<br />

and Panitalianism were important features of the Futurist Political Programme, launched<br />

<strong>in</strong> October 1913. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the period betwe<strong>en</strong> 1909 and 1919, the city of Trieste was the<br />

poster-child for the Irred<strong>en</strong>tist campaign and received far more att<strong>en</strong>tion from the<br />

Futurists than Tr<strong>en</strong>to. In this paper, I will seek to beg<strong>in</strong> to redress this <strong>in</strong>equality by<br />

exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>volvem<strong>en</strong>t of Italian Futurists, particularly Mar<strong>in</strong>etti, <strong>in</strong> the battle to<br />

wrest control of the Tr<strong>en</strong>t<strong>in</strong>o prov<strong>in</strong>ce from Austria. Mar<strong>in</strong>etti and several other<br />

prom<strong>in</strong><strong>en</strong>t Futurists (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Umberto Boccioni and Antonio Sant’Elia) <strong>en</strong>rolled <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Lombard Battalion of Volunteer Cyclists <strong>in</strong> May 1915 and sp<strong>en</strong>t six months fight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

the area aro<strong>und</strong> the north of Lake Garda, directly beh<strong>in</strong>d the Tr<strong>en</strong>t<strong>in</strong>o front-l<strong>in</strong>e. In<br />

addition to an exam<strong>in</strong>ation of this period, Mar<strong>in</strong>etti’s numerous manifestos, speeches<br />

and letters will be analysed as will newspaper reports relat<strong>in</strong>g to Futurist activity <strong>in</strong> the<br />

region <strong>in</strong> order to chart the Futurist participation <strong>in</strong> the Tr<strong>en</strong>t<strong>in</strong>o/Südtirol conflict.<br />
