Secrets of the Dvigrad 

Walls Dvigrad, Kanfanar 

The town of Dvigrad, today a serene 

and fairy-like place hidden 

in its natural greenery from the 

rest of the world, used to be an 

important Istrian medieval urban 

settlement. According to an ancient 

legend, Dvigrad is hidding 

a buried treasure inside its twin 

defensive walls, with secrets yet 

to be discovered. Once upon a 

time, three local villagers, in their 

search for gold, gathered in front 

of Dvigrad and started digging 

the old Dvigrad soil. While doing 

so, they had found a hole with 

a pot of gold coins and a small, 

black devil-like creature sitting 

on top of it. He demanded an exchange 

of souls for the treasure. 

However, the greedy company 

did not have time for bargaining 

with the small devil or considering 

this offer. They wanted to 

chase him off the pot and grab 

the gold as soon as possible. In 

the very moment the villagers 

started pushing the little devil 

and pulling his ears, a black cloud 

flew from the distance, the wind 

started blowing and while making 

a large noise with its wings, 

the devil hit and pushed the 

three villagers so fiercerly that 

each of them landed in their own 

corner, in the three outermost 

Istrian locations, the first one in 

the west, the second in the south 

and the third one in the east. 

Die Geheimnisvollen 

Mauern von Dvigrad 

Das Städtchen Dvigrad in Istrien, 

heute ein ruhiger und zauberhafter 

Ort, der sich in seiner 

natürlichen Vegetation vom Rest 

der Welt versteckt hält, war einst 

eine bedeutende mittelalterliche 

Siedlung. Der Legende von 

Dvigrad nach, soll innerhalb seiner 

Doppelmauern ein verborgener 

Schatz vergraben liegen, der 

noch einige Geheimnisse aufgibt. 

Einst kamen in der Nähe von 

Dvigrad, drei Dorfbewohner zusammen, 

die sich auf die Suche 

nach Gold machten und im alten 

Boden von Dvigrad zu graben anfingen. 

Beim Graben stießen sie 

auf ein Loch in dem ein Kessel 

voller Goldmünzen war. Jedoch 

saß darauf eine kleine, schwarze 

Kreatur, dem Teufel ähnlich. 

Dieser forderte für den Schatz 

einen Seelentausch. Die gierige 

Gruppe aber hatte keine Zeit, um 

mit dem Teufelchen zu feilschen 

oder über sein Angebot nachzudenken 

und wollte ihn vom 

Kessel verjagen und entfernen, 

um sich, so schnell wie möglich, 

das Gold zu schnappen. In dem 

Augenblick, als die Dorfleute anfingen, 

den kleinen Teufel zu vertreiben 

und ihn an seinen Ohren 

zu ziehen, kam aus der Ferne eine schwarze Wolke 

geflogen, der Wind fing an heftig zu wehen und mit 

riesigem Lärm seiner Flügel schlug und schubste 

der Teufel die drei Dorfbewohner so stark, dass jeder 

von ihnen auf seine Seite flog. Sie wurden auf 

die drei Endpunkte von Istrien hinausgeworfen, der 

erste nach Westen, der zweite nach Süden und der 

dritte nach Osten. 

100 miles of Istria 

Umag - Koromačno, 12. - 13.04. 

100 Miles of Istria is an endurance race along the 

Istrian hiking trail, starting from the town of Umag 

and finishing in the village of Koromačno. The trail 

passes through all the Istrian hilltops as well as 

some urban areas. The race consists of two categories. 

The longer one, from Umag to Koromačno, is a 

162 km long, with a total elevation gain of 5700 m, 

which is four times higher than climbing the peak of 

the Učka mountain, counting from the sea level! The 

other, „shorter” race, from Buzet to Koromačno, is 

a 100 km long, with the total elevation gain of 4300 

m - three times higher than climbing the peak of 

Učka. The competitors have 48 hours to finish the 

longer race, while time limit for finishing the shorter 

race is 38 hours. 

100 Meilen in Istrien 

Umag - Koromačno, 12. - 13.04. 

Das Rennen 100 Miles von Istrien ist ein Langstreckenrennen 

entlang der istrischen Wanderwege, 

ausgehend von der Stadt Umag und endet im Dorf 

Koromačno. Die Strecke setzt sich aus zwei Teilen 

zusammen und passiert alle istrischen Anhöhen 

sowie einige Städt. Die längere Strecke die in Umag 

beginnt und in Koromačno endet beträgt 164 Kilometer 

(100 Meilen) und umfasst insgesamt einen 

Höheunterschied von 5700 m, was zu Vergleich 

einem vierfachen Aufstieg vom Meer bis auf die 

Spitze des Berges Učka entspricht! Das zweite, kürzere 

Rennen mit einer Länge von 100 km von Buzet 

nach Koromačno beinhaltet einen Gesamthöhenunterschied 

von insgesamt 4.300 m was einem 

Dreifachaufstieg auf den Berg Učka entspricht. Das 

Zeitlimit um die Strecke zu bewältigen liegt bei max. 

48 Stunden für die längere Strecke und 38 Stunden 

für die kürzere Strecke.

Trail of the Fairies Feenroute 

Grožnjan - Marušići - Šterna - Sv. Juraj - Grožnjan 

If you would like to enjoy in the fairy landscape and 

to discover the magic fount of art, welcome to the 

track of the fairies! We start from Grožnjan, typical 

Istrian medieval town sprout high on top of the hill 

along the right coast of the Mirna River, vaunting 

its centenary walls, its renaissance loggia dating 

from 1585 and the beautiful St. Vid and Modesto’s 

baroque church. If you continue further along the 

track, you will reach Triban with its typical ashy 

stone houses adorning the green surroundings of 

the upper Buje area, and then the road will lead 

you to Marušići, the most musical village of Istria. 

Marušići consists of some thirty houses and, like 

Grožnjan, emanate musical sensibility. Over Dugo 

Brdo the path leads further to Šterna, village named 

after a big local cistern (šterna in a local dialect) 

situated on the large plateau intersected by water 

flows. Šterna was actually named after the unfailing 

water source which charges six ditches in the valley 

northern from the St. Michael church. There is also 

a legend related to this place saying that the top 

of its hill hides the buried ‘golden veal’. If you ride 

further across Šaini and the Sv. Juraj castle along 

the Mirna river, the track leads back to Grožnjan. Do 

not miss to admire unforgettable sunsets from its 

magnificent view point.

Willkommen auf der Feenroute! Wir starten 

in Grožnjan - einem typischen mittelalterlichen istrischen 

Städtchen, errichtet auf einem hohen Hügel 

am rechten Ufer des Flusses Mirna, mit seinen 

hundertjährigen Stadtmauern, Renaissanceloggia 

aus dem Jahr 1585 und mit der Barockkirche des 

Hl. Vitus und Modest. Wenn Sie auf dieser Strecke 

weiterfahren, erreichen Sie den Ort Triban, der mit 

seinen typischen Häusern aus grauen Steinen die 

grüne Landschaft der oberen Bujština schmückt 

und danach führt der Weg zum musikalischsten Ort 

Istriens - Marušići. Über Dugo Brdo führt der Weg 

weiter nach Šterna - einem Dorf, das seinen Namen 

nach einer grossen Zisterne (im Dialekt - Šterna) bekommen 

hat, die auf einem grossen Plateau gelegen 

ist, der von Wasserläufen durchkreuzt ist. Mit 

dem Namen Šterna, der eigentlich von der unerschöpflichen 

Quelle stammt, die sechs Wassergraben 

im Tal nördlich von der Kirche des Hl. Michael 

bewässert, verbindet man die Legende, die besagt, 

dass tief im Hügelgipfel vergraben noch immer ‚das 

goldene Kalb‘ versteckt sei. Wenn Sie weiter über 

Šaini und Kastell des Hl. Georg fahren, gelangen Sie 

über Kalcini zurück nach Grožnjan. Lassen Sie sich 

nicht entgehen und geniessen Sie vom Aussichtspunkt 

in Grožnjan den unvergesslichen Sonneuntergang.

whose 

work is 

based on 

ecological 

and natural 

approach in breeding animals, was enlisted in the 

project as an original excursion which can be done 

in an organized group or individually with previous 

announcement. The youngest ones and their 

parents can adopt an animal at the farm, they can 

learn how to make goat cheese and curd and see 

the Boškarin cow Sentona who recently gave birth 

to its first offspring. Das Projekt Sentona steht für 

Natürlichkeit, Ursprünglichkeit und Tradition der 

Region Labin. Genau deshalb wurde auch die Biofarm 

Drijade im Dorf Šumber, deren Viehzucht auf 

ökologische und natürliche Weise betrieben wird, 

mit in das Projekt aufgenommen. Der Ausflug und 

die Besichtigung der interessanten Biofarm Drijade 

findet in organisierten Gruppen oder individuell 

und nach Voranmeldung statt. Auf der Farm können 

Kinder und Eltern eines der Tiere adoptieren, 

lernen wie man Ziegen- und Frischkäse herstellt 

oder sich die Boškarinka (istrisches Rind) Sentona 

ansehen, die erst vor Kurzem ihr erstes Junges zur 

Welt gebracht hat.

Hiking trail Wanderweg 

Buzet - Kotli - Hum - Buzet 

Sights along the trail: Buzet, old medieval town, 

magnificent view of the surroundings; part of the 

trail runs along the Mirna river, the branching road 

towards Selci leads to the hidden natural wonders 

(canyon popularly known as Blizanci-Twins), when 

the water level is low you can pass through the 

canyon along the river; pond Garijak ideal for refreshing, 

Kotli, protected rural complex with preserved 

yard and porches and the water mill; the 

trail continues through the magnificent landscape 

of the Mirna river all the way to Hum, the smallest 

town in the world where you can visit the church of 

S. Jerome painted with frescoes. The length of the 

Buzet - Kotli - Hum trail is 12 km, duration 4 hours 

at a leisurely pace. The total length of the trails is 

about 30 km, which can be covered in around 10 

hours. Sehenswertes: Buzet, alte mittelalterliche 

Stadt, herrlicher Ausblick auf die schöne Landschaft, 

ein Teil der Strecke führt entlang des Flußes, 

der Zweig nach Selci führt bis zu verborgenen 

Naturecken (zum Canyon von den Einheimischen 

‘Blizanci’ (Zwillinge) genannt). Wenn der Wasserstand 

niedrig ist, ist der Canyon dicht entlang des 

Flußes begehbar; der Weiher Garijak ist zur Erfrischung 

und zum Baden geeignet; Kotli, geschütztes 

ländliches Gebiet; der Weg führt weiter durch 

das herrliche Mirnatal bis nach Hum, der kleinsten 

Stadt der Welt; Der Mirnaweg hat einen Streckenverlauf, 

der in Buzet startet, über Kotli weiter führt 

bis Hum, entlang des Flußes Mirna. Die Länge der 

Strecke Buzet - Kotli - Hum beträgt 12 km und dauert 

4 Stunden, leichte Wanderung. Tourlänge: 30 

km; Dauer: 10 Stunden.

Istrian Archaeological Parks: 

Brijuni The biggest archaeological park 

in Istria was created on the Brijuni Islands, 

an archipelago of fourteen islands and islets, 

which was, due to specifi c historical conditions, 

proclaimed a national park in 1983. 

These picturesque islands were already 

inhabited in prehistory. A luxury villa 

was built on the biggest island - Veli 

Brijun in classical antiquity. Since 

the archipelago was depopulated 

for centuries because of malaria, 

building remains from the past 

have been preserved. At the beginning 

of the 20th century, the 

German Industrialist Paul Kupelwieser 

bought the abandoned 

and malarial archipelago with an 

intention of turning them into an exclusive 

summer resort. He invited the well-known 

Nobel Prize winner, bacteriologist Robert Koch, 

to exterminate malaria from the islands. Brijuni 

thus became a world-known tourist resort, 

attracting a rich European clientele to visit 

many archaeological sites. During Austrian 

rule, under the management of the Austrian 

conservationist in charge of Istria, Anton Gnirs, 

many historic architectural remains were preserved. 

Several similar preservation projects 

create today’s archaeological park, where many 

architectural remains can be seen, perfectly 

incorporated into the landscape. There are 

numerous archaeological sites with Antique 

and Roman remains. The most impressive 

of these is the palace at Verige Bay, on the 

eastern coast of Veli Brijun. In its architectural 

composition, it stands as the most valuable 

example of Antique rural architecture in Istria. 

The palace stretched more than one kilometre 

along the shore. The complex consisted of a 

quay and a breakwater, a residential area, 

temples, thermal baths and an administrative 

area. The buildings were connected into an 

integral whole by a peristyle with rows of 

columns, two atriums surrounded 

by rooms and a portico with loggias. 

Several columns that today 

beautify the bay have been well 

preserved. Particularly notable 

is the multicolour fl oor mosaic 

decorated with diff erent fl oral 

and animal motifs. 

Archäologische Parks 

in Istrien: Brijuni 

Die Brijuni- Inseln sind eine Gruppe 

von 14 Inseln und wurden 

im Jahr 1983 zum Nationalpark 

erklärt. Spezifische historische 

Bedingungen ermöglichten es, 

auf den Brijuni-Inseln den größten 

archäologischen Park in Istrien zu 

realisieren. Schon in prähistorischer 

Zeit waren die malerischen 

Inseln besiedelt und in der Antike 

wurde auf der größten Insel Veli 

Brijuni eine luxuriöse Villa erbaut. 

Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts 

entdeckte der deutsche Industrielle 

Paul Kupelwieser die Inseln und 

machte sie zu einem mondänen 

Urlaubsort. Auf seine Einladung 

hin, verhalf der Nobelpreisträger 

Robert Koch, die Malaria auf den 

Brijuni-Inseln auszurotten. Teil des 

Angebots, welche die wohlhabenden 

europäischen Besucher 

anlockte, waren die archäologischen 

Fundstätten. Unter der 

Leitung des damaligen österreichischen 

Konservators für Istrien, 

Anton Gnirs, wurden zahlreiche 

historische Überreste ausgegraben 

und bewahrt. Zur Zeit der 

österreichischen Vorherrschaft 

wurden die Brijuni Inseln wegen 

ihrer strategischen Lage in das 

Abwehrsystems des Hafens von 

Pula und dem Kanal von Fažana 

miteinbezogen und so auf der 

Insel sieben Wehrtürme errichtet. 

Die Überreste antiker römischer 

Architektur sind an mehreren 

Stellen erhalten geblieben. Beeindruckend 

sind die Reste einer 

römischen Landvilla in der Bucht 

von Veriga, an der Ostküste der 

Insel Veli Brijuni. Aufgrund seiner 

architektonischen Komposition 

ist dies das wertvollste Beispiel 

antiker Landhausarchitektur in 

Istrien. Der Residenzkomplex erstreckte 

sich auf einer Länge von 

über einem Kilometer entlang der 

Bucht. Er beinhaltete eine Anlegestelle 

und mehrere Piere, sowie 

Wohngebäude, Tempel, Gewerbebauten, 

Thermen ... Alle Bauten 

sind in einem interessanten Stil 

von überdachten und offenen 

Säulengängen zur Meerseite hin, 

verbunden. Von diesem Atrium 

, der alle Teile des architektonischen 

Komplex in einer einmaligen 

Geschlossenheit verbunden 

hatte, sind vereinzelnde Säulen 

erhalten geblieben. Auch ein Teil 

des mehrfarbigen Bodenmosaiks 

mit Blumen- und Tiermotiven der 

Thermen ist sichtbar geblieben.

Kršan, an epic poem 

in Karst Its stony gates below

The entire countryside is embellished 

with natural ‘sculptures’ 

of wonderful Karst limestone 

ornamented with vegetation. The 

legend says that these stones 

were dropped off here by the 

fairies, being caught in the act 

at dawn by roosters, who were 

building the Amphitheatre in Pula, 

in the south of the peninsula! The 

grey outlines of the Kaštel are hiding 

the secrets about the frightful 

Juraj Kršanski (George of Kršan), 

squire whose cruelty in various 

robber like attacks was punished 

in Ljubljana in the 16th century. 

That was the time of constant 

conflicts between Venice and the 

Counts from Pazin (which Kršan 

belonged to). However it was so 

difficult to find the man that would 

decapitate George, appraise for 

1000 ducats… Looking at it from 

the air or from the belfry we notice 

the old centre of the citadel surrounded 

with houses in a shape 

of castrum (camp-ground). It was 

in this part where the 19th cent 

count Giuseppe Sussani found 

a copy of ‘Istarski razvod’, one 

of the most important croatioan 

legal documents. 

Kršan, ein Poem am 

Karst Sein Steintor unterhalb 

der eindrucksvollen Reste des 

Kastells schaut auf die Učka. Die 

ganze Landschaft ist von natürlichen 

‚Skulpturen‘ des wunderschönen 

vom Grün umgebenen 

Karststeins verziert. Die Legende 

sagt, dass diese Steine die Feen, 

die das Amphitheater, die Arena 

in Pula, im Süden der istrischen 

Halbinsel, bauten - in der Morgendämmerung 

vom Krähen der 

Hähne überrascht - aus ihren 

Händen fallen ließen. Die grauen 

Umrisse des Kastells bewahren 

Geheimnisse vom schrecklichen 

Georg von Kršan, einem Gutsbesitzer, 

dessen Unbarmherzigkeit 

bei unzähligen Raubüberfällen in 

Ljubljana Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts 

bestraft wurde. Das war 

die Zeit ständiger Auseinandersetzungen

oder vom Glockenturm betrachtet, 

erkennt man, dass die Häuser in

de Susanni die Abschrift der ‚Istrischen 

Grenzbegehungsurkunde‘, 

eines der wichtigsten kroatischen

Not so long ago, fishermen would 

catch fish from their batana 

(a type of boat), while farmers 

made wine, after which they 

would all meet in the Spacio 

(tavern) and sing about their 

lives, the sea, country, tales 

of unhappy love and happy 

endings. They would comment 

everyday events and sometimes, 

filled with wine and fish, they 

would quarrel... Es ist gar nicht 

so lange her, dass die Fischer

sie gemeinsam im Keller Spacio

Gallerion, Novigrad 

The Gallerion, after Vienna, is the 

second collection in the world of 

the Austro-Hungarian and other 

navies. With its exhibits, tells a 

story about the time when nations 

gathered under the crown 

of the large Austro- Hungarian 

Empire, the world’s superpower 

in shipbuilding, navigation and 

battles on the sea. In 2007 the 

collection was personally visited 

by the heir of the Habsburg’s 

Dynasty, Otto von Habsburg. 

Das Gallerion, nach Wien die zweite 

Sammlung von Modellen aller 

österreichisch-ungarischen und 

anderen Kriegsschiffen, erzählt 

mit seinen Exponaten von einer 

Zeit, als die unter der Krone des 

großen österreichischungarischen 

Reiches versammelten Völker 

eine Weltmacht im Schiffbau, 

in der Schifffahrt und auch in 

Seeschlachten war. Die Sammlung 

wurde im Jahr 2007 von 

Otto von Habsburg, dem Erben 

der Habsburg-Dynastie besucht. 

S.M.S. Szent István was 

launched on 17th January 1914 

in the Ganz & Comp. Danubius 

A.-G. shipyard in Rijeka and was 

commissioned on 13th December 

1915. She spent a total of 937 

days in the fleet, out of which 

she spent only 54 days at sea, 

mostly for gunnery training. She 

practically did not leave her anchor 

in Pula, the principal naval port of 

the Monarchy, during World War I. 

The first mission of Szent István 

was to destroy the Allied Otranto 

Barrage. In the early morning of 

10th June 1918 near the island 

Premuda in the Zadar archipelago, 

Szent István ran into an ambush of 

the Italian navy. Her replied sailing 

overheated the engines producing 

a thick smoke that revealed her 

position to the enemy torpedo 

boats. They torpedoed her at 

3:30 hrs, hitting her starboard 

flank. After almost three hours 

she capsized and sank to the 

depth of 66 meters. S.M.S. Szent 

István was the first battleship sunk 

by torpedoes. Other ships from 

the squadron saved 976 crew 

members, while 89 sailors died. 

During several Croatian and international 

diving expeditions a 

total of 37 items were brought 

up from the site, mostly found 

in the admiral’s salon. After their 

conservation and restoration they 

became holdings of the Maritime 

and Shipbuilding Collection of the 

Historical and Maritime Museum 

of Istria in Pula.

der Kriegsflotte. Dort war das 

Schlachtschiff insgesamt 937 Tage 

im Dienst, wobei nur 54 Tage, vor 

allem bei Schießübungen, auf See. 

Während des Ersten Weltkrieges 

hatte es kaum den Ankerplatz 

im Zentralkriegshafen von Pula 

verlassen. Die erste Kriegsaufgabe 

des Schlachtschiffes Szent 

István war es, die alliierte Sperre 

der Meeresenge von Otranto zu 

durchbrechen. Am frühen Morgen 

des 10. Juni 1918 in der Nähe der 

Insel Premuda im Archipel von 

Zadar, wurde die Szent István aus 

dem Hinterhalt von der italienische 

Kriegsmarine angegriffen. Aufgrund 

der beschleunigten Fahrt 

auf See wurden die Motoren so 

stark überhitzt, dass dicker Rauch 

aus dem Schornstein drang und 

es so durch feindliche Torpedoboote 

erblickt wurde, welche das 

Schlachtschiff daraufhin um 3:30 

Uhr torpedierten. Das Schiff wurde 

an der rechten Steuerbordseite 

getroffen. Nach fast drei Stunden, 

kenterte und sank es bis auf eine 

Tiefe von 66 Metern. Es war das 

erste Schlachtschiff, das durch 

Torpedos versenkt wurde. Die 

Geleitschiffe konnten 976 Besatzungsmitglieder 

retten, jedoch 

89 Matrosen kamen ums Leben. 

Bei mehreren kroatischen und 

internationalen Tauchexpeditionen 

wurden insgesamt 37 Gegenstände 

von Bord geborgen, 

die meisten davon stammten aus 

dem Admirals-Salon. Nachdem 

die Gegenstände konserviert und 

restauriert wurden, wurden sie 

im Fundus der Seefahrts- und 

Schiffsbausammlung des Historischen- 

und Seefahrtsmuseums 

von Istrien (in Pula) verwahrt.

This Germany submarine was 

sunk towards the end of World 

War I in the open sea near 

the Stoja swimming beach in 

Pula. It was one of the seven 

submarines that the Germans 

themselves sank immediately 

before the war ended. The 

submarine is not whole; only 

its stern, which is open, has 

been found. Still visible on the 

submarine are the remains 

of military equipment and air 

holes. Because of the vicinity 

of the beach, diving is also possible 

in unfavourable weather 

conditions.

Romanesque and 

Gothic Period in Istria 

The early feudal period in Istria from 11th to 13th 

century, which corresponds to the Romanesque 

period in the art, saw the erection of the city walls 

encompassing Motovun, Gračišće, Pula and Roč. 

The nobleman’s fortresses were also built in Pazin, 

Draguć, Svetvinčenat, Vodnjan, which remain the 

valuable testimonies of those times... However, the 

majority of mediaeval monuments of Istria belong 

to the sacral architecture with interesting Romanesque 

church belfries, such as those in Motovun, 

Završje or Bale. The Gothic period penetrated into 

Istria by the end of 13th century - a period which 

would significantly determine the atmosphere and 

the look of the present seaside towns, especially 

Poreč, Rovinj, Pula, Vrsar and Umag, whose stonepaved 

alleys, gothic palaces and churches reflect 

the spirit of the Middle Ages. The towns in the heart 

of Istria, which are also the real pearls of this period, 

Motovun 

hold the extremely valuable wall paintings. Among 

the churches that were built in that period, the most 

interesting one is the church of St Francis of Assisi 

in Pula. From the 15th century to the fall of the 

Republic of Venice in 1797, Istria remained divided 

into the Austrian part of inner Istria and the Venetian 

area which included the shore and the large 

part of the inner Istria, almost three quarters of its 

area. The war between Venice and Turkey and their 

penetration to the Istrian peninsula, as well as the 

war between Venice and Austria and the Uskok War 

brought Istria the cataclysmic depopulation, arson, 

destruction... Moreover, the population was also divided 

and fought each other, depending on whether 

they lived in Venetian or Austrian part. Both the 

Venetian and the Austrian government had to initiate 

new colonization of desolated areas. Istria was 

then populated by the deserters and the colonists 

from Croatian and South Slavic areas, as well as the 

Albanian areas and the Venetian estates in Levant.

aus der Wandmalerei. 

Zu den Kirchen, die in dieser Zeit 

errichtet wurden, zählt auch die 

äußerst sehenswerte Kirche des 

Hl. Franz von Assisi in Pula. Ab 

dem 15. Jahrhundert bis zum Fall 

der Republik Venedig im Jahre 

1797 blieb in Istrien die Teilung 

Istriens in österreichisches, ein 

Teil in mittelistrisches und in 

venezianisches Gebiet erhalten. 

Zum venezianischen Teil Istriens 

gehörten die Küste, sowie ein 

Großteil des Landesinneren, also 

fast drei Viertel Istriens. Der Krieg 

Venedigs gegen die Türken und 

ihr Vordringen auf die istrische 

Halbinsel, sowie der Krieg zwischen 

Venedig und Österreich 

Bale 

und der Uskoken Krieg bringt 

Istrien verheerende Entvölkerung, 

Brandstiftungen, Zerstörung 

... Darüber hinaus kommt 

es zur Teilung und Krieg unter 

der Bevölkerung, die entweder 

auf venezianischem oder österreichischem 

Gebiet wohnten. 

Die venezianische und österreichische 

Herrschaft mussten so, 

auf eine Neubesiedelung der 

verlassenen Gebiete zurückgreifen. 

In Istrien kommt es daraufhin 

zur Ansiedlung von Flüchtlingen 

und Siedlern aus kroatischen 

und südslawischen Regionen, 

albanischen Gebiete und venezianischer 

Inbesitznahme in der 

Levante.

completely preserved till today! During the reign of 

the Byzantine emperor Justinian, Porec reached its 

highest peak. This will become obvious to you once

Poreč, früher eine römische

Euphrasius-Basilika, ein kulturhistorisches Denkmal, 

das niemand unbeeindruckt lässt. In der Zeit vom 

Bischof Euphrasius im 6 Jh., wurde die Basilika im 

byzantinischen Stil erbaut - die Mosaiken an der 

Vorderseite und an den Innenwänden gehören zu 

den besterhaltenen Werken dieser Kunst in der 

Welt! Der ganze Komplex wurde von der UNESCO 

zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt! Betreten Sie Euphrasiana 

und spüren Sie einen Hauch von vergangenen 

Jahrhunderten und berühren Sie die Ewigkeit. Aus 

dem Mittelalter sind das romanische Haus mit seinem 

interessanten Holzbalkon und der fünfeckige 

Turm zu einer Besichtigung zu empfehlen. Dieser 

fünfeckige Turm diente einst als Stadttor und ist 

heute das Eingangstor zu einer ganz außergewöhnlichen 

gastronomischen Welt geworden.

Kirche Marias Geburt Labin 

Three-nave church of Blessed Virgin Mary’s Birth 

built in 1336 on the foundations of the small church 

from the 11th century. It was reconstructed several 

times. The last reconstruction was in 1993. A Venetian 

lion with a sphere in his mouth - a symbol of 

Labin recognizing the Venetian government - was 

put on the front facade in 1604. By the end of that 

century, in 1688, a baroque statue of senator Antonio 

Bollani, a combatant against Turks, was put 

on the same facade. The bust is one of the most 

beautiful examples of the secular sculptural art of 

Istria in the 17th century. On the right from the 

church, there is a palace which belonged to the 

Schampicchio family. Church of the B. V.Mary’s Birth 

decorated with six marble altars. One of them has 

St.Justin’s relics brought here from Rome in 1664. 

Main altar and altarpiece with six figures of B.V.M., 

St.Pauline and Saints : Justin, Sergio, Julian, Tom 

and Jacob. The author is Natale Schiacione from 

Dalmatia, the much more valuable altarpiece by the 

altar of the Madonna of Carmel from the l7th century 

is believed to be done by the famous painter 

Jacopo Negriti, better known as Palma the Younger. 

Valentin Lukas, a young Labin painter from the 19th 

century; is the author of the painting featuring the 

Stages of the Cross. 

Die dreischiffige Kirche Marias Geburt wurde im 

Jahre 1336 auf den Ruinen einer kleinen Kirche aus 

dem 11. Jh. erbaut. Sie wurde mehrmals umgebaut, 

zuletzt im Jahre 1993. Im Jahre 1604 wurde an ihre 

Front der venezianische Löwe mit einem Ball im 

Maul angestellt, als Symbol der Anerkennung der 

venezianischen Herrschaft in Labin. Ende des Jahrhunderts, 

im Jahre 1688, wurde an die gleiche Stelle 

die barocke Statue des Senators Antonio Bollani 

des Kämpfers gegen Türken hingestellt. Diese Büste 

ist eines der schönsten Beispiele der profanen 

Bildhauerkunst in Istrien im 17. Jh. Rechts von der 

Kirche befindet sich der Palast der bekannten Patrizierfamilie 

Scampicchio, der durch eine Kapelle 

mit der Pffarkirche verbunden ist.

Die Kirche Marias Geburt schmücken sechs Marmoraltäre, 

unter ihnen auch der Altar mit den Reliquien 

des Hl. Justus, die im Jahre I664 aus Rom herangebracht 

wurden. Der Hauptaltar hat eine Palla 

mit den Gestalten der Seeligen Jungfrau Maria, der 

St. Paulina und der Heiligen Justus, Sergius, Julians, 

Thomas und Jakob. Der Autor ist Natale Schiavone, 

aus Dalmatien gebürtig. Viel wertvoller ist das Altarbild 

der „Muttergottes vom Karmel“ aus dem 17. 

Jh., das Werk des berühmten Malers Jacopo Negriti, 

bekannter als Palma der Jüngere. Der Labiner Maler 

Valentin Lukas aus dem 19. Jh. ist Autor der Bilder 

mit der Darstellung des Kreuzweges.

Situated at the far end of the western coast of Istria, it is the last historic 

maritime station before crossing the northern Adriatic. Its greater surroundings 

are rich in archaeological finds that prove living in prehistoric times. 

The Roman rule meant intensive construction of residential-economic villas 

along the coast, and the peninsula on which Umag lies was no exception. 

Remains of a sophisticated ancient complex were found here as well, 

namely on the main square, Trg slobode. Remains of a residential building 

and many rooms of economic function were interpreted as parts of a large 

ancient olive oil production workshop that was supplied with olives from the 

fertile surroundings. Die Stadt liegt an der Spitze der Westküste Istriens und 

ist die letzte historische Seefestung am Übergang in die nördliche Adria. Die 

weitere Umgebung ist voller archäologischer Ausgrabungen, die das Leben 

des urgeschichtlichen Menschen von dort bestätigen. Zur Zeit der Römer 

wurden an der Küste Villen mit Wirtschaftsgebäuden errichtet. Die Halbinsel, 

auf der Umag liegt, bildete keine Ausnahme. Hier wurden auch Reste eines 

zusammengesetzten antiken Gebäudekomplexes entdeckt, und zwar am 

Hauptplatz, dem Platz der Freiheit. Die Reste eines Residenzgebäudes wie 

auch zahlreiche Wirtschaftsräume wurden als Teile einer großen antiken Ölmühle 

erkannt. Dort wurden Oliven aus der fruchtbaren Umgebung gepresst.

Novigrad 

On the western coast of Istria, by the mouth of the 

Mirna River, lies Novigrad, the centre of the Frankish 

administration in Istria. This small peninsula too, 

was inhabited already in prehistoric times. In Antiquity, 

countryside villas (villae rusticae) were built 

in its greater area - the wealthy population knew 

how to identify suitable locations for their wealthy 

countryside homes. However, in times of war such 

a location was also strategically important, which 

is why in the tumultuous Late Antiquity, a castrum 

was built around one of the villas. The military fortification 

grew into a town, and the town developed. 

As early as 599 it is mentioned as Neapolis in a

letter from the Pope. Already then it was supposedly 

the centre of the Novigrad diocese, although 

there is no firm evidence to support this. 

The church that keeps the relics of St. Pelagius, 

the town saint, was most probably built in the 6th 

c. with a cemetery next to it. 

An der Westküste Istriens, an der Mündung des 

Flusses Mirna, liegt Novigrad, das ehemalige 

Zentrum fränkischer Verwaltung in Istrien. 

Auch diese kleine Halbinsel war in der Urgeschichte 

besiedelt. In der Antike enstanden auf dem weiteren 

Gebiet Sommervillen - die wohlhabende römische 

Bevölkerung verstand es sich passende Plätze 

für den Bau ihrer reichen Häuser für die Sommermonate 

auszusuchen. Diese Häuser waren auch 

in Kriegszeiten strategisch wichtig, so dass in der 

wechselvollen spätantiken Zeit um eine der Villen 

ein Castrum entstand. Die Militärbefestigung wuchs 

zu einer Stadt, die Stadt wurde immer wieder 

vergrößert. Als Neapolis wurde es schon 599 erwähnt, 

und zwar in einem päpstlichen Schreiben. 

Man vermutet, dass es schon damals das Zentrum 

der Diözese von Novigrad war, obwohl es dafür 

keine sicheren Anhaltspunkte gibt. Wahrscheinlich 

wurde im 6. Jahrhundert die Kirche gebaut, in der 

die Überreste des Hl. Pelagius aufbewahrt werden. 

Er ist der Stadtpatron. Um die Kirche lag auch der 

Friedhof.

Vin de rosa 

For centuries, Vodnjan has produced 

a special wine that was 

mentioned by numerous historians 

and writers, such as Tomaso 

Luciani, Marco Tamaro, Gabriele 

D’Annunzio, Pietro Sansa, Pompea 

Fabro etc. - a desert wine which 

is even nowadays produced in 

small quantities, called vin de rosa. 

It used to be produced from the 

grape from vineyards in extremely 

small area between Bale, Vodnjan 

and Peroj, with dark rose grapes, 

which after careful processing 

and long ripening turned into a 

sweet tasting wine and was bottled 

and preserved for important 

events. This wine is an Istrian 

specialty, which is, at least in 

its original quality, rarely found 

for sale since it is produced in 

small quantities. It has soft pink 

colour, a sweet taste and a very 

nice rose fragrance. The alcohol 

percentage is 10-12 vol.% and 

it is preserved in bottles, in the 

darkness of wine cellar if possible. 

It was served at the end of 

the lunch on great family feasts 

(weddings, christenings, confirmation), 

great annual feasts (Easter, 

Christmas, New Year’s Eve) or 

it was preserved in order to 

be given to important figures, 

e.g. a doctor, a notary or some 

special guest. In the past, vin 

de rosa was even used during 

recovery from illness, in order to 

overcome the weakness caused 

by high temperature after the flu 

or childbirth, being served to the 

person who was still in bed in 

a bowl of a good soup with an 

inch of vin de rosa inside it. The 

folk medicine claimed that it was 

a nutrient and that it fought the 

weakness. 

In Vodnjan wird schon seit Jahrhunderten 

ein ganz besonderer Wein 

produziert, den schon zahlreiche 

Historiker und Schriftsteller wie 

Tomaso Luciani, Marco Tamaro, 

Gabriele D‘Annunzio, Pietro Sansa, 

Pompeu Fabra und viele andere, 

erwähnt haben. Es handelt sich 

dabei um den Dessertwein Vin de 

rosa, der auch heute noch in kleineren 

Mengen produziert wird. 

Hergestellt wurde der Wein aus 

Trauben von Weinreben aus eine 

kleinen Region zwischen Bale, Vodnjan 

und Peroj. Aus den dunkelrosa 

Trauben wurde, nach sorgfältiger 

Bearbeitung und langem Reifungsprozess, 

ein Wein mit süßem Geschmack 

gewonnen, der dann in 

Flaschen abgefüllt und für besondere 

Anlässe aufbewahrt wurde. 

Dieser Wein ist eine wahre istrische 

Spezialität, da er nur in kleinen 

Mengen hergestellt wird und daher, 

in seiner ursprünglichen Qualität, 

nur sehr selten im Verkauf vorzufinden 

ist. Er besitzt eine zartrosa 

Farbe, einen süßen Geschmack 

und einen sehr angenehmen Rosenduft. 

Der Alkoholgehalt des Vin 

de rosa beträgt 10 bis 12 Vol. % 

und wird in Flaschen, am besten im 

Dunkeln des Kellers, aufbewahrt. 

Serviert wurde der Wein, am Ende 

des Mittagessens bei größeren Familienfeiern 

(Hochzeiten, Taufen, 

Konfirmationen), an besonderen 

Feiertagen (Ostern, Weihnachten, 

Neujahr) oder wurde aufbewahrt 

und wichtigen Persönlichkeiten wie 

z.B. einem Arzt, Notar oder einem 

ganz besonderem Gast geschenkt. 

Der Vin de rosa wurde einst, auch 

zur Genesung von der Krankheiten 

genutzt, um das durch Fieber 

ausgelöste Schwächegefühl nach 

einer Grippe oder einer Geburt zu 

überstehen. Aus diesem Grund 

wurde der bettlägerigen Person 

immer eine gute Suppe mit einem 

Schuss Vin de rosa angeboten. Die 

Volksmedizin behauptete, der Wein 

sei nahrhaft und kämpfe gegen das 

Schwächegefühl an. 

Istrian wines 

Among the numerous varieties 

found in this area, the most 

important is the Istrian white 

Malvazija. It is found thoughout 

Istria, making it therefore an 

inseparable part of this region’s 

identity. Teran is typical of Istria 

just as well, a wine with an colour 

ranging from purple to ruby-red. 

A special attraction for those fond 

of good wine are two muscat 

varieties of special aroma: Momjan 

Muscat and Poreč Muscat rose. 

Istrische Weine 

Von den zahlreichen Sorten, die 

wir auf diesem Gebiet finden, ist 

der weiße istrische Malvasier am 

wichtigsten. Genauso typisch ist in 

Istrien der Teran, von violetter bis 

rubin roter Farbe, mit lebhaften 

Obstgerüchen, außergewöhnlich 

frisch und zierlich, weniger 

strukturiert. Eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit 

erwecken bei den 

Libhabern des guten Tropfens 

auch zwei Muskatsorten von einem 

außergewöhnlichen Aroma:

Coastal cuisine 

It is still possible to find authentic 

local fish in Istria. It doesn’t have 

to be fancy, prepared according 

to thedictates of nouvelle cuisine, 

filleted and sauced. The queen of 

Istrian-Dalmatian coastal cuisine 

is buzara - a stew based on lots 

of garlic, onion or no onion depending 

on the cook, parsley 

and tomato (fresh in summer, 

preserved in winter). To this base 

are added prawns, quartered 

spider crabs, or halvedcrayfish 

browned in Istrian extra virgin 

olive oil and poached with white 

wine while the tomato base is 

reduced. A more common buzara 

features mussels (pedoči) 

or other poached sea fruit in a 

sauce thickened with browned 

breadcrumbs. This buzara was 

traditionally eaten with a mussel 

shell. With Istrian waters too cold 

for crayfish or lobster, the other 

crustacean queen is the spider 

crab, maja squinado in Latin. The 

fishing season is spring when the 

larger specimens return to the 

coast to reproduce, and Easter is 

the ideal time for good steamed 

spider crab. The Istrian rock crab 

(cancridae) with its lethal pincers 

is humbler but just as delicious. 

Rock crab meat is often enjoyed 

in salads or buzara, served 

with polenta or pasta. Mussels 

steamed with

Die Gastronomie der 

Küstenregion 

In Istrien ist es immer noch möglich 

‚echten‘ Fisch zu finden. Es 

muss nicht unbedingt edler 

oder, nach dem Diktat der Nouvelle 

Cuisine, filetierter und mit 

Saucen begossener Fisch sein. 

istrianische Fischrezept 

ist die ‚Busara‘. Es handelt 

sich um ein einfaches 

Schmorgericht mit Knoblauch, 

Zwiebel, Petersilie 

und Tomaten (im Sommer 

frische und im Winter aus 

der Dose). Man dünstet 

Knoblauch und Zwiebeln in 

extranativem Olivenöl aus 

Istrien, danach gibt man 

Scampi (oder Meerspinnen 

in Stücken oder der Länge 

nach halbierte Hummern) 

dazu, löscht das ganze mit 

etwas Weißwein ab und 

lässt die Tomaten etwas 

einkochen. Es gibt auch 

eine Variante ohne Tomaten, 

die für Miesmuscheln 

(‚Pedoči‘) oder gemischte 

Meeresfrüchte verwendet 

wird. In diesem Fall wird 

die Sauce mit Paniermehl 

angedickt, diese wird dann 

mit Hilfe einer Miesmuschelschale 

gegessen. 

Des weiteren findet sich 

unter den Krustentieren, 

neben Hummern (in Istrien 

gibt es keine Langusten, 

das Wasser ist zu kalt) auch 

die Meerspinne (auf Latein 

maja squinado): gefischt 

werden sie im Frühling, 

wenn die größeren Exemplare 

sich zur Fortpflanzung 

der Küste nähern. Ostern 

ist demnach der beste Zeitpunkt, 

um eine gekochte 

Meerspinne zu genießen. 

Nicht ganz so edel aber 

gleichfalls schmackhaft 

sind die auf den Klippen 

lebenden Taschenkrebse 

mit ihren riesigen Zangen. 

Sie werden geschält als 

Fischsalat oder à la Busara 

mit Polenta oder Nudeln 

gegessen. 

Auch Miesmuscheln sind 

überall zu haben, à la 

‚Scottadito‘ (Wasser, Weißwein, 

Öl und Zitronensaft) 

oder à la ‚Busara‘ ohne 

Tomaten. Die im Limski kanal 

gezüchteten sind sehr 

groß, schmackhaft und sicher, 

wie auch die Austern 

die schon von den alten 

Römern im istrianischen 

Fjord zwischen Vrsar und 

Rovinj gezüchtet wurden.

Wild asparagus is definitively one of the most appreciated wild-grown cultures which flourishes 

in Istria, and is picked from the middle of March till the end of April. In that period in 

the northwestern area of Istria the Asparagus Days are held, when numerous restaurants 

and taverns offer various specialties with this tasty and extremely healthy plant. The peak of 

the event is the Šparogada - Asparagus festival in the village of Kaštel near Buje, held in the 

week after Easter. Visit the selected restaurants along the Wild asparagus route and discover 

why this plant is so popular and appreciated in Istria. 

Wildspargeln sind sicherlich eine der meist geschätzten selbst gewachsenen Pflanzkulturen, die im

Women Gladiators 

Gladiatorinnen 

Did you know that the gladiator fights were not 

reserved for men only, but that women also appeared 

in these blood games for the entertainment 

of common people? The historical record show that 

Nero organised a gladiator spectacle in honour to 

the king of Armenia, where women from Ethiopia 

participated too, while during the rule of Domitian, 

Vespasian’s son, the night fights of women gladiators 

were lit by torches. The present magnificent 

amphitheatre in Pula was built by the Roman 

emperor Vespasian. According to the legend, he 

built it to honour his beloved lover, a beautiful 

woman from Pula named Antonia Cenida who 

owned attractive land in the Pula surroundings. 

When the coliseum in Rome was opened in 80 AD, 

the poet Martial mentioned women in the arena, 

one of whom was dressed like Venus. His contemporary 

Juvenal mocked the upper-class women 

who ‘wore the helmet, reject femininity and loved 

pure power’, fighting for fun. Apart from the works 

of Juvenal and Martial, we can learn more about 

women gladiators from the writings of the historian 

Tacitus and Dio Cassius and a limited number of 

archaeological findings. The most famous of them 

is the marble relief of two women fighting - they 

are armed, wearing shields and shin protector, and 

they were presented with bare breasts and without 

a helmet. The ruler Septimius Severus prohibited 

women-fighters round 200 AD, but that ban was 

not respected. 

Wussten Sie, dass es Gladiatorenkämpfe nicht nur 

unter Männer gab und bei den blutigen Unterhaltungsspielen 

auch Gladiatorinnen teilnahmen? In 

historischen Dokumenten wird erwähnt, dass bei 

Spielen des Kaisers Nero zu Ehren des Königs 

von Armenien, Gladiatorenkämpfe veranstaltet 

wurden, in denen Äthiopierinnen teilnahmen und 

unter der Regierung von Vespasians Sohn Domitian, 

Nachtkämpfe der Gladiatorinnen unter Fackellicht 

stattfanden. Gerade der römische Kaiser Vespasian 

ließ das prächtige Amphitheater von Pula erbauen. 

Der Legende nach wurde es zu Ehren seiner, aus 

Pula stammenden Geliebten, der schönen Antonia 

Cenida erbaut, die attraktive Grundstücke im

Tacitus und Cassius Dio auch aus 

einigen wenigen archäologischen 

Funden. Der berühmteste Fund 

ist ein Marmorrelief von zwei 

Frauen im Kampf - sie waren 

bewaffnet, trugen Schilder und 

Schienbeinschoner und wurden 

mit nacktem Oberkörper und ohne 

Helm dargestellt. Der Herrscher 

Septimius Severus hatte um das 

Jahr 200 herum, Frauenkämpfe 

verboten, jedoch hielt man sich 

anscheinend nicht an das Verbot.

of sea horses inhabit the Adriatic 

Sea: the long snouted sea-horse 

(Hippocampus guttulatus) and the 

short snouted sea-horse (Hippocampus 

hippocampus). The classical ‘fish 

shape’ in sea horses is completely 

changed. They swim uprigth; they have 

a horse like head, fish fins, a snake 

like tail and eyes like a chameleon, 

while the body is covered with hard, 

bony plates. They have numerous 

spines and appendices on the body 

which vary from species to species 

in size and shape. Sea horses inhabit 

temperate and tropical waters. They 

colonized sea grass meadows where 

fast sea currents provide a large 

amount of food. They wrap the tail 

around plants for not being washed 

away by currents. They are usually 

located in shallow waters down to 

a few meters deep. 

Seepferdchen 

In der Welt gibt es 35 Arten von 

Seepferdchen in der Größe von 2,5 

bis 25 Zentimetern. In der Adria sind 

zwei Seepferdchenarten vertreten: 

das Langschnäuzige Seepferdchen 

(Hippocampus guttulatus) und das 

Kurzschnäuzige Seepferdchen (Hippocampus 

Hippocampus). Sie fallen 

besonders durch ihr Äußeres auf, 

das nur sehr wenig an einen Fisch 

erinnert. Sie schwimmen aufrecht, 

haben einen Kopf der eher dem eines 

Pferdes ähnelt, einen wurmartigen 

Schwanz, Fischflossen und Augen, die, 

einem Chamäleon ähnlich sehen sowie 

einem Körper, der mit knöchernen 

Platten bedeckt ist. Auf dem Körper 

befinden sich zahlreiche Stacheln 

und fleischartige Anhängsel, die von 

Spezies zu Spezies in Größe und 

Verzweigung variieren. Seepferdchen 

leben in gemäßigten und tropischen 

Gewässern. Sie besiedeln den mit 

Seegras bewachsenen Meeresgrund 

in der Nähe von Wasserströmungen, 

damit ein genügendes Vorkommen 

ihrer Hauptnahrung gewährleistet 

ist. Um nicht von der Strömung 

abgetrieben zu werden, schlingen 

sie ihre langen Schwänze um nahe 

gelegene Pflanzen. Sie leben die 

meiste Zeit im seichten Wasser, bis 

zu mehreren Metern Tiefe. 

Explorations of the 

Pazin Cave When the Speleological 

Society Istra was founded in 

1975 in Pazin, one of the first missions 

was to explore the Pazin cave. 

Following the path of the characters 

in the novel Mathias Sandorf by Jules 

Verne, a great expedition was organised 

in cooperation with the Club for 

Submarine Activities from Pula, whose 

goal was to find the opening through 

which the water streamed into the 

underground at the bottom of the 

first subterranean lake in the Pazin 

cave, ‘the Martel’s Lake’. The diving 

was performed on 24 August 1975. 

The divers went under the water tied 

with string from the raft standing 

on the surface of the lake. Only the 

fifth driver, Mitar Marinović, found 

the underground water tunnel, and 

the new subterranean lake and the 

cave. He estimated that it was 12-13 

m long and that afterwards the cave 

continued by tortuous tunnel right 

from the lake. As soon as he came 

back to the raft, he shouted in joy 

and announced his findings. The new 

lake and the cave were immediately 

named after its founder, Mitar’s Cave. 

Up to the present, Mitar Marinović, 

along the literary character Mathias 

Sandorf, remained the only person 

who saw the sequent to the Pazin 

Cave, its second subterranean lake 

and the second cave which continues 

into the unknown. 

Forschungen in der 

Paziner Höhle Als im Jahr 

1975 in Pazin die Speläologische 

Vereinigung „Istrien“ gegründet wurde, 

bestand eine seiner ersten Aufgaben 

darin, die Höhle von Pazin zu erforschen. 

Den Spuren von Jules Vernes 

Helden im Roman Mathias Sandorf 

folgend und in Zusammenarbeit mit 

dem Club für Unterwasseraktivitäten 

aus Pula wurde eine große Forschungsaktionen 

organisiert, deren 

Ziel es war, in der Höhle von Pazin 

am Grund des ersten unterirdischen 

Martelsee die Öffnung zu finden, 

durch die das Wasser weiter in den 

Untergrund läuft. Die Tauchgänge in 

der Höhle wurden am 24.08.1975 

durchgeführt. Auf der Oberfläche 

des Sees wurde ein Floß angebracht, 

von dem sich die Taucher, an einem 

Seil befestigt, ins Wasser hinabließen. 

Erst der fünfte Taucher namens Mitar 

Marinovic fand den unterirdischen 

Wassertunnel und an dessen Ende 

einen, bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt, unbekannten 

unterirdischen See und eine 

Höhle. Seiner Einschätzung nach, ist 

der See 12-13 m lang und dahinter 

erstreckt sich die Höhle durch einen 

gewundenen Tunnel weiter, der sich 

an der rechten Seeseite befindet. 

Gleich nach seiner Rückkehr auf 

das Floß, tat er laut jubelnd seine 

Entdeckung kund. Der neue See und 

die Höhle wurden sogleich nach dem 

Namen ihres Entdeckers, „Mitarhöhle“ 

benannt. Der Forscher Mitar Marinovic 

blieb, bis zum heutigen Tag, neben 

dem fiktiven literarischem Helden 

Mathias Sandorf, der einzige, der 

die Fortsetzung der Höhle von Pazin, 

den zweiten unterirdischen See und 

die zweite ins Unbekannte führende 

Höhle gesehen hat.

With Sports from Streets and Squares to Nature and Tourism 

Mit Sport von den Straßen und Plätzen in die Natur 

und den Tourismus 

Popolana, a distinctive three-day event, is filled with sports and recreational 

events, entertainment for children and adults and a wide 

selection of culinary delights, while its praiseworthy humanitarian 

character can be felt throughout the event. Proceeds collected from 

the sale of T-shirts and flowers are donated to charity, particularly to 

associations for people with special needs. Children, recreational athletes, 

citizens and all visitors of Rovinj can try their skills in different sports: 

indoor rock climbing, indoor rowing competition, chess tournament, 

aerobics, basketball, electronic darts, nordic walking parade, cycling, 

a 22 km half-marathon or a 5km recreational run. Fish caught during 

the sports and underwater fishing competition is used for preparing 

culinary delicacies for all the participants of Popolana, the event which 

calls for a joyful gathering on a crowded Rovinj’s waterfront. 

Die Popolana ist eine unverwechselbare dreitägige Veranstaltung voller 

Sport- und Freizeitangeboten, Unterhaltung für Kinder und Erwachsene, 

einer reichen Auswahl an kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten und mit 

lobenswertem humanitären Charakter. Alle vereinnahmten Geldmittel 

von dem Verkauf von T-Shirts und Blumen werden für wohltätige 

Zwecke, insbesondere Behindertenvereinen, gespendet. Alle Kinder, 

Freizeitsportler, Bürger und Besucher Rovinjs können am attraktiven 

Veranstaltungsangebot teilnehmen: Kletterwand, Rudersimulatoren, 

Schachturnier, Aerobic, Basketball, elektronische Darts, Nordic Walking, 

Radtour, Halbmarathon der Länge von 22 km oder beim Freizeitlauf 

von 5 km. Auch eine Verkostung von frischen Fischgerichten, die beim

Funtana Water means life. 

And Funtana, whose name comes 

from the Latin word fons or fonticus, 

meaning spring, is a place 

where you can hear the babble of 

water in its very name. So what is 

the story of these springs? If you 

are here for the first time, ask one 

of the town’s gentle inhabitants 

who will be happy to guide you 

along the main road to the nicely 

ordered green area close to the 

sea, where today children like to 

play and old people 

rest their eyes staring 

at the horizon. 

You are close to 

Šterna and Perili, 

the famous water 

springs of Funtana, 

after which the town 

has been named. It 

is the meeting point 

of many paths, trampled 

for centuries by 

many thirsty, curious 

souls in need 

of refreshment. 

Funtana has more 

springs than these 

two, but, right on 

the sea, they are 

the most important 

ones - the 

ones that blessed 

Funtana and

Even in antiquity 

an aqueduct led 

all the way to the Roman villa

Name sich aus den lateinischen

hat, was Quelle bedeutet, ist ein 

Ort, wo man das Plätschern des 

Wasser hören kann... Was ist 

darunter zu verstehen? Sollten 

Sie das erste Mal hier sein, dann 

fragen Sie einen freundlichen 

Einheimischen und er wird Ihnen 

gern den Weg zeigen, der entlang 

der Hauptstraße zu einem 

schön hergerichteten grünen 

Flecken direkt am Meer führt, 

wo heute Kinder spielen und wo 

die Alten sich ausruhen und ihre 

Augen übers Meer schweifen 

lassen bis hin zum Horizont. Sie 

stehen hier direkt bei der Šterna 

(Zysterne) und bei den Perila, den 

Wasserquellen von Funtana, nach 

denen der Ort seinen Namen erhalten 

hat. Viele Wege führen zu 

diesen Quellen, wurden sie doch 

über Jahrhunderte von zahllosen 

Durstigen ausgetreten, aber auch 

von Durchreisenden, die sich erfrischen 

wollten. In Funtana gibt es 

noch andere Quellen und obwohl 

wir von den anderen wissen, sind 

doch diese beiden, direkt am 

Meer gelegen, die wichtigsten. 

Diese beiden brachten Funtana 

Segen und gaben dem Ort seine 

besondere Bedeutung. Selbst in 

der Antike wurde Wasser aus 

den Quellen über ein Aquädukt 

bis hin zur römischen Villa in der 

Zelena Laguna geleitet.

Straßenarbeiten auf den öffentlichen Strassen in Istrien: 

Lavori in corso sulle strade dell’Istria: 

Pula [10.03. - 15.05.] 

- zatvorena je državna cesta D66 od Labinske ulice do ulice 

Valica zbog rekonstrukcije raskrižja Šijana, obilazak: lokalnim 

prometnicama kroz Pulu; 

- the road from the Labinska St. till Valica St. will be closed due 

to Šijana crossroad reconstructions, alternative ways along 

the local roads 

- geschlossen ist die Staatsstraße D66 in Pula, von der Straße 

Labinska ulica bis zur Strasse Valica wegen Rekonstruktionsarbeiten 

an der Kreuzung Šijana, Umleitung über die 

Ortsstraßen durch Pula; 

- la strada statale D66 è chiusa al traffico da Via 

Labinska-Albona fino a Via Valica per lavori dovuti alla ricostruzione 

dell’incrocio Siana, deviazione: per le strade locali, 

attraverso Pola; 

Buzet - Roč [14.03 - 07.05.] 

- dionica zatvorena za sav promet od 8 do 17 sati, 

svakodnevno osim nedjeljom; sudionicima u prometu 

preporučaju se obilazni pravci: 

- the road will be closed due to roadworks from 8am to 5pm, 

every day except on Sundays; the alternative ways: 

- auf der Staatsstraße D44 ist die Strecke von Buzet bis Roč 

von 8 bis 17 Uhr, täglich außer Sonntags für den gesamten 

Verkehr geschlossen; allen Verkehrsteilnehmer werden 

folgende Umgehungsstrassen empfohlen: 

- la strada rimarrà chiuso al traffico ogni giorno dalle ore 8 

alle 17, a eccezione della domenica; si consigliano pertanto 

le seguenti deviazioni: 

Buzet - Cerovlje - Istarski ipsilon/A8 (Ypsilon), 

Buzet - Motovun - Pazin, 

Buzet - Ponte Porton - Vižinada - Baderna - 

Istarski ipsilon/A8 (Ypsilon);
