The amount of "colloidal clay" in red loamy soil calculated on
dry matter is given in Table III.
Table IV shows the numerical data obtained after dividing the
mgr. eqv. of replaceable Oa, Mg and Na in 100 gr. dry soil by the corresponding
% of dry "colloidal clay".
These figures, representing the amount of cations absorbed by
I gr. of "colloidal clay", offer a measure for the determination of the
saturation degree of the soil by the correspondent cation.
On the basis of the recorded data we can assert, as
a general rule, that the saturation degree of the "absorbing
complex" of red loamy soil by Ca decreases with the
depth, while the saturation degree by Na increases. The
saturation degree of Mg is similar to that of Ca but less
marked.
The data given in Table IV permit us, on the basis of the relation
existing between the absorbed cations and physical properties of the
"absorbing complex" to forsee the existence of a different structure
in the upper and lower layers of the soil profile.
The saturation degree of the absorbed Ca, which decreases with
depth, and the inverse increase of the state of saturation by Na lead
to the formation of an upper friable layer of coagulated particles and
of a lower layer of compact soil. ^
The formation of the soil profile in the red loamy soil
of Palestine is insignificantly effected by the transport of
"colloidal clay" and chiefly dependent on the distribution
of the absorbed bases, Ca, Mg and Na, through the soil
profile. These absorbed cations are the cause of the
existence of two different soil layers in red loamy soil.
•Laterisation and Podzolisation Processes in Red Soils
The properties of red loamy soils described above are the result
of chmatic conditions prevaihng in the semi-tropical dry region. The
