the colossus was built and commissioned in 1991,
the last of five identical conveyor bridges. Its four sisters
are still operating and remove overburden at the
opencast mines at welzow-Süd, nochten, Jänschwalde
and reichwalde. Fate had other plans for
this F60. after a service period of just 15 months, in
which it removed 27 million cubic metres of overburden,
the klettwitz-nord opencast mine was closed.
It seemed that the end was nigh for the 13,500 ton
steel behemoth. Plans were already being made to
blow the F60 up. but these plans were cancelled
thanks to a group of enthusiasts who recognised its
potential. today, the conveyor bridge stands not only
as a symbol of the industrial history of the region, but
also as a sign of structural change.
In 2000, the concept of a visitors’ mine was definitively
adopted. accompanied by over 4,000 interested
spectators, the F60 was moved from the mine
to its current location. the area around the F60 was
opened to visitors for the first time at easter of the
same year. but it would be another two years before
the former F60 overburden conveyor bridge opened

as a visitors’ mine. on 4 may 2002, the first visitors
were able to climb onto the bridge and walk the
1.3 kilometres from one end to the other and back.
Specially built viewing platforms provide a vast view
over the region, which is still undergoing extraordinary
changes.
Varied prOGraMMe
besides walks on the bridge and guided tours, the
operators of the F60 also offer their visitors adventure,
entertainment, even romance. For example,
the viewing platform at a height of 60 metres can
be booked for exclusive, atmospheric family dinners
or intimate suppers for two. daring guests can abseil
from the dizzying heights. the F60 is also a popular
destination for works outings, as a meeting centre,
or it may serve as a one-of-a-kind backdrop for seminars.
the steel giant also serves as a venue for concerts
and other entertainment events. hanSa-FleX
has taken advantage of these offerings in the past,
with great enjoyment.
So there is much to see and experience at the F60 visitors’
mine, and the varied agenda is well supported.
the 100,000th visitor was welcomed back in 2009.
In 2013, the F60 will host the european Celtic music
Festival and the uS Car & Custom bike meeting, as
well as many other events. the night presentations,
in which the F60 is transformed into a sculpture of
light and sound, are spectacular highlights. whether
the purpose of your visit is for romance, adventure,
or simply curiosity, the conveyor bridge in lichterfeld
will not disappoint. •
