DEAR READERS,
The newly completed hose line volume production facility began operations
in Bremen in the first quarter of 2013, as planned. The requirements of a small
number of OEM customers have already been supplied at the facility. According
to plans, our new division will gradually assume responsibility for more and more
customers. With the implementation of this volume production capability, we will
further enhance the consistent quality of our products and will be able to meet the
technical requirements of our OEM customers even more rapidly.
Beginning on 1 September 2013, the HANSA-FLEX Foundation established in December
2012 by Joachim Armerding, the founder of HANSA-FLEX AG, will make
150,000 euro per year available in scholarships for full-time and part-time studies
at the Jacobs University in Bremen. “The HANSA-FLEX Foundation considers assistance
for the next generation to be an extremely important duty. One of its highest
priorities will be to provide support for particularly talented young people, who
will in turn help to make lasting changes to the economic and social conditions in
their respective countries of origin. The International Jacobs University in Bremen
is the ideal partner in this undertaking”, declared Joachim Armerding.
The winner of the first prize in our four-part contest marking the 50th anniversary
of the founding of HANSA-FLEX AG is Ms Marina W. from Berlin. Ms W. was
presented with the key to a Smart Electric Drive with a value of 25,000 euro at the
bauma trade fair. We extend our warmest congratulations to Ms Wilske and wish
her many years of happy motoring. A detailed report of the trade fair is included in
this issue, starting on page 14.
In addition, the first HANSA-FLEX plant-in-plant production facility on the American
continent began work in February of this year in Brazil. The development of
this project from start to completion is the subject of our title story.
in neun Hauptkategorien.
Thiago Vitola,
DIREKTER SERVICE
IN BRASILIEN
PLANT-IN-PLANT IN THE LAND
OF SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN
As the host nation for major events such as the FIFA World Cup in 2014
and the Olympic Games in 2016, Brazil will be the focus of much international
attention for the next several years. At HANSA-FLEX, the
South American country has been a point of keen interest for a long time,
particularly since HANSA-FLEX Brazil has emerged as one of the fastest growing
foreign subsidiaries in the HANSA-FLEX group of companies. Since February
2013, our Brazilian colleagues have been operating a plant-in-plant on
site for Masal S.A., one of the country’s leading manufacturers of cranes and
agricultural and forestry machinery.
Masal was founded in 1953. The company started with twelve employees, who
produced innovative farming machines. In the 1960s, Masal began building seed
drills. Over the next decade, the machine builders added grain trailers to their
portfolio. These remain one of the corporation’s core product lines to this day.
Masal was acquired by Claudio Bier in 1982. Under his leadership, the company
developed its product range strategically for the coming years. Today, Masal operates
a nationwide network of sales centres and three production sites throughout
Brazil. Over 300 employees manufacture a broad range of products that are organised
into nine main categories. These categories encompass everything from
agriculture and forestry machines to cranes in 16 different size and performance
groups and elevating work platforms. The company’s customer base includes
some of the biggest enterprises in the country, such as electricity supplier CELESC
and the petroleum giant Petrobras.
FROM 0 TO 100
The first contact between Masal and HANSA-FLEX took place in March 2012 at
Tube, the world’s premier trade fair for the pipe and tube industry, in Düsseldorf.
It was there that Thiago Vitola, CEO of Masal S.A., visited the HANSA-FLEX stand
and learned about the services offered by the systems supplier. Initial discussions
were encouraging. Soon afterwards, Christian Herrmann, the Regional Manager
for HANSA-FLEX Brazil, received the information about the trade fair contact from
the Marketing department in Bremen. A first invitation to visit the customer’s
site was scheduled for the end of April 2012. At this meeting, Christian Herrmann
presented the full range of services offered by HANSA-FLEX. The plant-in-plant
concept attracted great interest, and the options for implementing this idea at
the Masal production facility in Santo Antonio were quickly explored in depth. But
before these negotiations could be put on a formal footing, we had to convince
the customer of the quality of our products. Shortly after the first face-to-face
meeting at the customer’s site, HANSA-FLEX received an enquiry regarding the
supply of hydraulic lines for 16 machines. Christian Herrmann prepared a bid and
HANSA-FLEX delivered the first samples. “The quality of the hose lines, the speed
of the delivery, the price – in short, the whole package more than exceeded our
expectations”, recalls Thiago Vitola. There road was clear for developing a closer
business relationship. On 10 September 2012, Masal and HANSA-FLEX signed the
contract for construction of the plant-in-plant, which began operations on 1 February
2013.
FLEXIBILITY IS IMPORTANT
“We really wanted to start production at Masal sooner, but unfortunately there
were a few unforeseeable challenges that needed to be overcome first”, says
Christian Herrmann in an interview. The machinery for the plant-in-plant was
at the customer’s site as early as December 2012. Everything was ready. But the
customer’s production location is not in the same state as any of the HANSA-FLEX
branches, and Brazil is a federation of states. “Each state has its own legislation,
so we had to negotiate a number of legal and fiscal hurdles”, continues Mr Herrmann.
Once we had satisfied the local authorities, we were finally able to get
started. Today, two employees produce all of the hose lines that Masal needs for
its production programme. These are made on site and delivered straight to the
customer’s production line as ready-to-install kits, complete with all threaded
connections. The facility is also responsible for assembling the threaded connections
needed for production by Masal subsidiary Jacui in Cachoeira do Sul,
which produces mainly agricultural machinery. “We
are extremely satisfied with the services provided by
HANSA-FLEX in the plant-in-plant. The employees
know how to respond to our production and orders
situation flexibly and at very short notice”, Thiago
Vitola praises the cooperation, for which there are
already expansion plans for the future. For example,
negotiations are currently in progress regarding the
supply of bent pipes.
CLEAR PROCESSES WITH SAP
“The customer gains undeniable advantages from the plant-in-plant. He no longer
has to set warehouse space aside for hose lines, threaded connectors and other parts.
We take responsibility for that. We also assist Masal with our expertise in the development
of new machines and advise them in the design of the hydraulic systems”, Christian
Herrmann explains the details of the cooperation. The items needed are ordered
by the plant-in-plant from the central warehouse in Blumenau in the same way as
all the other branches in Brazil. All HANSA-FLEX locations in the largest country in
South America are integrated in SAP, so execution of these processes is standardised.
The fact that our colleagues have been able to complete a project like this in Brazil
shows how well HANSA-FLEX is organised on site. Consequently, our Brazilian
subsidiary will undoubtedly achieve its ambitious targets in the future, and will
continue to attract attention and respect. •
Cachoeira do Sul, welches hauptsächlich Landmaschinen herstellt, konfektioniert.
KLARE PROZESSE DANK SAP
PRAXIS PRACTICAL
PRACTICAL PRAXIS
As I am getting into my car in the morning, I bump the steering wheel
with my legs. My wife, who is much shorter than I am, used the car to
go out last night. But thanks to the memory function I can move the
driver’s seat back into the programmed position that is perfect for me completely
automatically. The sun is shining, so I lower the side window. Even
before starting the engine, I have in all probability already used two systems
from Brose Fahrzeugteile GmbH & Co. KG, the fourth largest family-owned
supplier to the automotive industry in the world. Because: Every third new
vehicle built in the world today is fitted with at least one product from Brose.
GUTE FAHRT MIT BROSE
HAPPY MOTORING WITH BROSE
in Berlin.
MARKTFÜHRER IN VIELEN BEREICHEN
The Brose Group can trace its origins back to 1908. It was then that a young salesman
named Max Brose opened an automobile equipment retail shop in Berlin. The
First World War put an abrupt end to the thriving young company. But by 1919 the
entrepreneur and his partner Ernst Jühling had founded Metallwerk Max Brose &
Co. in Coburg. From this time on, the company’s business area was expanded to include
the manufacture of car parts. Over the following decades, the family-owned
business introduced a succession of innovative products onto the market. In 1926,
the company developed the world’s first crank drive for lowerable windows. This
product, which went into mass production just two years later, was the subject
of enormous demand and turned Brose into the market leader in this field. The
success of this enterprise was cut short by another World War. But in the autumn
of 1948 Max Brose resumed management of Metallwerk, which soon began supplying
window lifters for the production of the VW Beetle. In 1963 Brose began
mass production of the “window lifter with electronic drive”. Five years later, Brose
began production of seat recliner mechanisms for adjusting the backrest.
MARKET LEADER IN MANY FIELDS
In 1971, the company founder’s grandson Michael Stoschek took over the reins of
Metallwerk Max Brose & Co. at the age of 23. Over the next 34 years, Mr Stoschek
transformed the family enterprise into a corporate group with a global presence.
Today, as a partner to the international automobile industry Brose supplies about
80 automotive brands and more than 30 components suppliers with mechatronic
systems and electric motors. Approximately 21,000 employees work for Brose at
53 locations in 23 countries, and in all major automotive markets. In the last financial
year, the company generated sales of about 4.5 billion euro. Worldwide, it
produces more than 13 million door systems, over 52 million window lifters and
14 million lock modules. The family enterprise is the market leader in all three
sectors. And still this is only a small excerpt from its product spectrum. Any business
can only attain such a position in this fast-paced market through constant
refinement of its own products. And this is why, as ever before, Brose remains
synonymous with innovation. With more than 250 patent applications per year,
the automotive supplier is one of the 30 most active patent applicants in Germany.
FAST SPARE PARTS DELIVERY
The HANSA-FLEX branch in Bamberg has been supplying the Brose plant in Hallstadt
with hydraulic hoses, couplings, threaded connectors and other hydraulic
components for more than ten years. Every single hose line bears the X-CODE,
which makes re-ordering much easier for the customer. If a hose line on a machine
fails, all Brose needs to do is call the HANSA-FLEX branch and quote the corresponding
X-CODE. Our employees produce an identical replacement hose line immediately
and deliver it to the Brose plant in Hallstadt with all possible dispatch.
PRACTICAL PRAXIS
EVERY SINGLE
THE X-CODE
performs scheduled servicing of the machines. “We follow the service intervals
recommended in BGR 237 very strictly, and we replace the hydraulic hose lines installed
in the injection moulding machines regularly”, reports Thomas Gruber, Production
Manager at the Brose plant in Hallstadt. “But we are happy to leave major
maintenance work on the hydraulic systems in the safe hands of HANSA-FLEX”, he
continues. When it comes to hose line management and installing a complete set
of new hoses on individual machines, Brose routinely relies on the HANSA-FLEX
Industrial Service.
INDUSTRIAL SERVICE ON SITE
Since every hose line bears an X-CODE, the lines can be assembled already at the branch.
This speeds up the maintenance period immensely.
entsprechenden X-CODE an die HANSA-FLEX Niederlassung übermittelt. Umgehend
“Our service team is called on to visit Brose about three to four times a year”, says
Roland Müller, Manager of the Industrial Service department in Bamberg. The last
time was in January 2013. The Industrial Service Team was tasked with fitting a
complete set of new hoses on an injection moulding machine with a closing force
of 1,650 tons. “On machines this big, there are many different hose lines installed,
and we have captured every one of them with an X-CODE. This makes our work
much easier, and we can work fast, because we know exactly which hose lines
have to be replaced and we can produce them in the branch before we even set off
for the customer’s site”, Roland Müller succinctly states the advantages of X-CODE.
So the branch functions as an extended workbench and saves time as well. This
interplay also cuts down the operating time of the Industrial Service on site, and
thus also the downtimes for the customer’s machines. These preventative maintenance
measures are carried out in precisely defined periods, so that production
does not have to be interrupted unnecessarily. Long machine stoppages are a
critical factor in the operations of the automotive components supplier, because
the Brose plant supplies many of its customers according to a “just-in-sequence”
production programme. Unplanned machine failures are therefore highly undesirable.
With a perfectly organised internal maintenance programme and the support
of HANSA-FLEX, they are kept to the very minimum. •
So agiert
BAUMA MUNICH
The world’s biggest exhibition of construction machinery opened on 15. April
and, as always, HANSA-FLEX staged an impressive presence. The venue in Munich
was attended by over 3,400 exhibitors from 57 countries. In all, this trade fair attracted
The HANSA-FLEX Eventmobile was also on hand, this time in the atrium, where it
served as a second stand. As at the HMI, our main focus at bauma was on the field
of mobile services. Interested visitors were able to take advantage of a real handson
experience and inspect in the minutest detail not only a hydraulic service container
but also one fully equipped vehicle from each of the fluid service and the
rapid hydraulic service fleets. Throughout the seven days of the fair, 27 selected
employees were on hand to advise and assist our visitors and answer questions
about every aspect of HANSA-FLEX. By the end, we had met with several thousand
visitors from every conceivable nation at our trade fair stand. Indisputable proof
that HANSA-FLEX enjoys a worthy reputation abroad as well as in Germany. The
throng of visitors was sometimes so great the we were obliged to control the numbers
Versandhalle ausgebaut.
The digger has just scooped out a pit and deposited its load in the trailers
that are towed behind the tractors when a UFO appears from nowhere
and tries to beam the driver of the bulldozer on board. Luckily, he has already
deployed a protective shield around his machine, and this attempt to
abduct an Earthling fails. Of course, this scenario is not played out in reality,
but in a sandbox and the imagination of the child who is playing with the toy
vehicles manufactured by BRUDER. The Fürth-based family company doesn’t
make UFOs, but it does produce toy models of its own vehicles with true-tolife
details and amazingly real functions. When holding one of these models,
many an adult has experienced a nostalgic longing to be a child again.
The history of BRUDER Spielwaren GmbH & Co. KG dates back almost 90 years.
The company was founded as a one-man operation in 1926 by Paul Bruder. With
immense patience, he made reeds by hand, and these were then delivered to toy
trumpet makers. Heinz Bruder, the son of the founder, joined his father’s company
in 1950 and soon began looking for new business ideas. He found them in plastic
manufacturing. By 1958, the company was producing the first miniature toys and
plastic reeds. After that, the company grew steadily. A new factory building was
built in 1960 and was extended just six years later. In the 1970s, a warehouse and a
shipping hall were added. BRUDER continued to develop a constant stream of new
products in three product lines, motor vehicles, promotion merchandise and miniature
toys. The company’s success meant that another new building was needed,
and this was completed in 1981. In 1987, Paul Heinz Bruder joined the company’s
management team, representing the third generation of the founding family. By
the end of the 1980s, the company’s premises spread over 25,000 square metres.
The first overseas sales office was opened ten years later. BRUDER Toys America Inc.
opened for business in Gardena, California, USA, and was managed by Beate Caso,
Heinz Bruder’s daughter. Even in the USA, BRUDER remained firmly in the hands
of the founding family. In the ensuing years, the toy manufacturer continued to
grow. Today, BRUDER is one of the leading manufacturers of plastic toy vehicles
in the world, and employs a staff of 350. Its products are organised into six different
thematic categories and made with the aid of almost 100 injection moulding
machines at the site in Fürth-Burgfarrnbach.
END-TO-END PRODUCTION UNDER ONE ROOF
From tractors to bulldozers to cranes, the models reproduce in miniature the full-size
products from world-renowned manufacturers, providing everything a child’s heart
could desire, to the delight of children and parents alike. All toys are faithful replicas
of the original machines down to the smallest detail in a scale of 1:16, and have lifelike
functions. For example, the telescopic arms of the cranes can be extended and
equipped with a wide range of accessories. The special appeal of BRUDER toys lies in
the innovative approach to the development and production of new toys in order to
ensure that they offer this kind of functionality. BRUDER uses cutting edge CAD computer
programs and 3D-design workstations to develop and design its toys before
they are passed to the mould making department in the same factory. Here, the latest
CNC milling machines are used to make the mould inserts and add the individual
steel parts to create the final mould. When the injection moulds are ready, the proprietary
plastic production process begins. BRUDER only uses high-quality plastics,
such as are also used to some degree in the life-size automotive industry. The g
Spielwaren in sechs verschiedenen Themenbereichen.
liefert“, fasst Stefan Sellerer zusammen.
Sandkasten. •
toy manufacturer attaches great importance to the conservation of resources and the
environment. Accordingly, for example, plastic remnants are collected and returned
to the material cycle in a recycling procedure. The completed plastic parts are assembled
firmly and packaged in just a few steps with the aid of assembly robots before
they begin their journey to more than 60 countries all over the world.
LONG-STANDING BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP
BRUDER and HANSA-FLEX began their business relationship back in 1999. It all
started with the delivery of a special spiral hose. Today, the Nuremberg branch
supplies threaded connectors, hydraulic and low pressure hoses for the injection
moulding machines, temperature control couplings for the cooling systems and
much more. Since 2003, support for this customer has been the responsibility of
HANSA-FLEX field sales technician Joachim Brock. “If a hose fails during production,
we get to the site right away. Since our branch is so close to the customer,
we can often deliver the required hose to the BRUDER production hall 20 minutes
after receiving the order”, says the HANSA-FLEX employee.
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
And because it is essential to keep unscheduled machine stoppages to a minimum
at BRUDER, Stefan Sellerer, Manager Injection Moulding, places great emphasis on
preventative maintenance: “As a machine operator, we have a duty to make sure that
the machines our employees work with are thoroughly maintained, and we take
this duty very seriously. Besides, preventative maintenance is a no-brainer from the
point of view of the business as well, because especially during peak production periods
machine stoppages simply can’t be tolerated.” For maintenance work, the toy
manufacturer has relied on the services of HANSA-FLEX for the last five years. The
maintenance schedules are coordinated directly between Mr Rotter, the Maintenance
Manager at BRUDER, and our service technician Marc Semisch. “We have developed
a system whereby I call the customer every Monday and ask if there is a machine that
needs servicing. On average, I go to the site and replace the hoses on a machine about
once a fortnight”, reports Marc Semisch. He has been involved in the maintenance
programme at BRUDER since October 2012, and in the intervening time he has become
thoroughly familiar with the setup at BRUDER. “BRUDER uses injection moulding
machines of various sizes and types from three different manufacturers. Mr Rotter
has given me an inventory list of hoses, threaded connectors and other components
that are fitted on each of the various machines, so I always have the parts I need in the
vehicle when I visit the customer”, explains the service technician.
“We are extremely satisfied with the service we receive from HANSA-FLEX. If a hose
line fails, all we have to do is call the branch in Nuremberg and quote the X-CODE
number. They then make the hose, and it is delivered to us shortly afterwards”,
Stefan Sellerer briefly describes the process. “And in maintenance we can always
count on Mr Semisch’s expertise and flexibility.” When the machines are running at
BRUDER, everything is ready for the next UFO attack in the sandpit. •
beim Kunden an.
an Druckspeichern ausführen. •
Pressure accumulators are used for many processes in hydraulics. They
are becoming increasingly important particularly in energy-efficient
systems.
In a pressure accumulator, a hydraulic fluid is forced under pressure into a pressure
vessel that is already filled with gas. The gas that is compressed in this way is
thus able to release the energy stored at a later time. The main problem for many
companies that work with equipment of this kind is the technical maintenance
thereof, as well as inspection by an Approved Inspection Agency (ZÜS). These duties
should generally be carried out only by a qualified technician, otherwise referred
to as an authorised person. Many employees of HANSA-FLEX AG throughout
Germany have qualified as Authorised Persons for Pressure Equipment.
Authorised Persons for Pressure Equipment must have received formal training
and passed a final examination administered by a ZÜS. The ZÜS is usually the German
TÜV. Their function within the company does not become effective until they
have been named as such by their technical manager or operations manager. The
main duties associated with this function are not filling and servicing the pressure
accumulators, but rather assisting the technical manager in ensuring that regular
inspections are safe, carrying out hazard evaluations and determining the regular
service periods of existing pressure equipment on the basis of the current company
safety regulations.
In order to be able to carry out maintenance work such as filling with accumulator
gas, replacing the accumulator bladder or installing and removing entire accumu-
lators, personnel must have attended technical training courses in working with
pressure equipment in hydraulics. This training must have been completed at an
advanced training institution with demonstrable expertise in the field of hydraulics.
Many factors must be considered during basic maintenance and inspection tasks on
pressure accumulators. For example, the fill level of the filler gas must be checked
every three months. The only permissible filler gas is nitrogen, and the check must
be documented. The scope of maintenance and monitoring tasks depends on the
size of the pressure accumulator. For example, pressure accumulators with a nominal
volume up to one litre are not subject to monitoring requirements, but they must
be evaluated and checked regularly by an authorised person. Regulations stipulate
that all pressure accumulators with a nominal volume greater than one litre must be
monitored. These accumulators must also undergo external testing by a ZÜS every
ten years. The same applies for certified safety valves. When a pressure accumulator
with a capacity of more than one litre is installed for the first time, this must be
reported to a ZÜS, which must then carry out acceptance testing of the installation.
In order to help companies on site, the Internationale Hydraulik Akademie (IHA)
also offers in-house seminars for fitters and maintenance personnel at the customer’s
site. These seminars explain the filling and repair of accumulators, and the
statutory requirements with reference to practical examples. The topic of pressure
accumulators is also covered in the seminars entitled “Working correctly with line
equipment and working media” and offered by the IHA. Upon successful completion
of the “Pressure Accumulators” seminar module, trainees are then qualified to
carry out all service and maintenance work on pressure accumulators. •
GREIFSWALD
DREAM YACHTS FROM
GREIFSWALD
Herauszufinden, was hinter dem Horizont verborgen
Seit 1361
laufen hier Schiffe vom Stapel. Anfangs vorwiegend Hansekoggen, denn Greifswald
der See bauten.
g
Over the centuries, many people have responded to the profound fascination
of the open seas. The call to discover what lies hidden beyond
the horizon has awoken the urge to explore in no small number
of landlubbers. While there are no more uncharted waters on our planet
now, sailing has lost none of its almost magnetic powers of attraction. To
set sail for the seven seas on their own yacht still remains a powerful dream
for many adventurers of the modern age. With the sailing yachts built by
HanseYachts AG, based in the Hanseatic city of Greifswald and the only publicly
listed company in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, this dream can become
reality.
Shipbuilding has a long history in Greifswald which stands on the shores of the
Baltic Sea. Ships have been running down the slipways here since 1361. In the
beginning, they were mainly Hanseatic cogs, because Greifswald was a member
of the Hanseatic League at least as early as 1278. As part of the “Wendish Sector”,
which included Lübeck, Wismar and Rostock and was highly influential within
the trading alliance, Greifswald enjoyed a position of prominence for many years.
Most of the Hanseatic cogs that plied the trade routes in the Baltic Sea were built
in the city, in the Bay of Greifswald. The Hanseatic shipbuilders had a well-earned
reputation for building their ships with a healthy respect for the sea on which they
were to sail. For it was unpredictable and never wholly without danger. That has
certainly not changed in the intervening centuries. The sport of sailing is one of the
last great adventures that remain open to Mankind. And HanseGroup subscribes
to that philosophy to this day. A defining phrase in the company’s profile states:
“Anyone who intends to build yachts that can operate safely on all the world’s
oceans must be humble before Nature, know her and respect her. What holds true
for experienced sailors applies in no less measure for us as yacht builders: Never
sail against the sea, sail with it”. With this guiding principle, in the twenty years
since its foundation the group of companies has earned a considerable position in
the market. In terms of numbers of yachts sold globally, HanseYachts AG is one of
the three largest manufacturers of ocean-going sailing yachts in the world. But a
success story like this must also be rooted in other pragmatic virtues besides an
abiding passion and respect for the sea. With entrepreneurial vision, active alignment
with a clearly defined target group, efficient production processes and above
all with highly skilled employees, HanseGroup makes sailing yachts whose grace
and quality are acknowledged the world over.
INDIVIDUAL SERIES PRODUCTION
At the same time, the group combines the principles of series production, with
efficient use of platforms and modules much like the automotive industry, with
custom designs. For example, on their latest model, the HANSE 575, the yacht
builders offer a staggering 40,000 combination options for the interior. And if
that is not enough, special requests are also no problem. Each yacht is equipped
exactly as the owner wishes. Eight different Hanse sailing yacht models (+4
Moody models + 2 Varianta models + 3 Fjord models + 5 Dehler models) are
built in the Hanse dockyard in Greifswald alone. “Fjord” motorboats, a marque of
the Norwegian builder that has been part of the HanseGroup since 2007, are built
and launched here. In 2008, the group expanded its product range with the deck
saloon yachts and aft cockpit yachts from “Moody”, the venerable English yacht
builder whose history dates back to 1827. In 2009, the HanseGroup acquired
the Dehler Yachts dockyard in order to gain access to the market for smaller and
medium-sized yachts.
Acht verschiedene Hanse Segelyacht-Modelle
(+4 Moody Modelle + 2 Varianta Modelle + 3 Fjord Modelle + 5 Dehler Modelle)
HYDRAULIK AN BORD
Niederlassung in Samtens sämtliche Verbindungselemente
Marcel Najdowski, Niederlassungsleiter in Samtens.
STARKER PARTNER
gate can be lowered hydraulically so that the dinghy can be used. In this way, the
jet-propelled tender is lowered into the water. And just like other yachts in the
HANSE range, the tailgate can be used as a swimming platform. For this and other
hydraulic functions, the HANSA-FLEX branch in Samtens supplies all of the necessary
connectors. These range from hose lines to threaded connectors, hydraulic
oil and everything in between. And since it is scarcely possible to prevent components
from coming into contact with salt water on a yacht, naturally all threaded
connectors, fittings and other components are delivered to the customer with a
seawater-resistant coating. But the services provided by HANSA-FLEX extend well
beyond just delivering hydraulic components. “We were brought on board the
project to design and develop the hydraulics right from the planning phase for the
HANSE 575”, recalls Samtens Branch Manager Marcel Najdowski.
A STRONG PARTNER
“We sought out HANSA-FLEX as a strong supplier”, says Arne Amann, Purchasing
Manager for HanseYachts AG, “HANSA-FLEX gives us rapid delivery, high quality
parts and an abundance of technical knowledge. And as the best manufacturer on
the market, naturally we only want to work with the best suppliers.” Since the buyers
of the yachts built by the group are located all over the world, the global positioning
offered by HANSA-FLEX was another factor in the decision to enter into cooperation.
Another is the X-CODE, which is stamped on every hose line installed in HanseGroup
yachts. If a hose line should ever develop a fault, customers and sales partners anywhere
in the world can count on fast assistance from HANSA-FLEX. Simply quote
the X-CODE to the nearest branch and the identical spare part will be produced and
shipped immediately. So the adventure on board a HanseGroup yacht can go on. •
Romania
In this issue, the HANSA-FLEX country lexicon takes us to Romania, on the
shores of the Black Sea. Romania is a fascinating country, steeped in tradition
yet striving for modernity, which also happens to be the home of one
of the most infamous creations in modern literature: Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
GEOGRAPHY
Romania has a population of 19 million and an area of 237,000 square kilometres.
It is situated in the southeastern extremity of Europe and shares borders with Bulgaria,
Hungary, Moldova, Serbia, Montenegro and the Ukraine. With a population
of two million, its capital Bucharest is also the country’s largest city. Romania has
been a member of the EU since 2007. Its currency is the leu. Much of Romania
is dominated by the Carpathian Mountains – this mountain range includes the
Moldoveanu, the highest mountain in the country which rises to an altitude of
2,544 metres. These highlands are bounded in the North and West by the Transylvanian
Basin and by the Pannonian Plain in the East. In all, there are over 3,400
lakes in Romania, its largest river is the Danube, with a length of 1,075 kilometres.
FLORA AND FAUNA
About a third of the country is forested, mostly mixed, beech and oak forests. The
delta of the River Danube is home to a wide variety of marsh plants and reeds,
including several carnivorous plants. The animal life in Romania is very diverse:
Wolf, bear, deer, wildcat and lynx roam the highland forests. The area around the
Danube provides habitat particularly for wild boar, foxes, otters and coypu. The
bird life includes pelicans, flamingos, cormorants and cranes as well as other species
– even dolphins and monk seals live in the sea off the coast of Romania.
CLIMATE
Romania is located at the transition between the maritime and continental climate
regions. In the centre and West of the country, the climate is mainly humid.
The Southeast is characterised more by continental influences, with hot summers
and cold winters. In contrast, the weather in the deep Southeast is Mediterranean.
Temperatures can vary between over 40 degrees Celsius above and 40 degrees
below freezing.
HISTORY
The area that is modern Romania was first settled four millennia before the birth
of Christ. The first settlers to make their mark on the region were Indo-Europeans,
who were followed by Greeks, and after the first century by Romans. In the centuries
that followed, parts of the territory fell under the domination of the Bulgars,
the Tatars and the Magyars. Beginning in the 14th century, Wallachia and Moldavia
established themselves as independent principalities. Wallachia and Moldavia
merged to form Romania in 1862. The new country’s independence was recognised
at the Congress of Berlin 16 years later. During the First World War, Romania
allied itself with the powers of Russia, Great Britain and France. After winning its
war against Hungary, Romania almost doubled its land area. But with the outbreak
of the Second World War Romania lost part of its territory as a conse- g
quence of the pact between Hitler and Stalin. After the
end of the war, Romania fell under Soviet control – in
1947 the monarchy was abolished and the country was
renamed the People’s Republic of Romania. In the period
that followed, communist structures were set up.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, democratic processes
were instituted following a revolution. Romania
has been a member of the European Union since 2007.
TOURISM
Romania lies on the shores of the Black Sea. Its 245 kilometres of coastline are
dotted with seaside resorts on sandy beaches, but mass tourism has not yet taken
hold here. Yet Romania offers great rewards to those who do visit the country:
Limestone caves in the Apuseni Mountains, lowland riparian forests along the
Danube, scenic peaks in the Carpathians and somnolent farming villages in the
Transylvanian Hill Country. Transylvania is especially attractive. The region is encircled
by the Carpathians and is also known as the Land of the Seven Castles. The
5,600 square kilometres occupied by the Danube delta represent an impressive
area of ecological importance. It is the largest wetland region in Europe and includes
a maze of reed islands, inland lakes, lagoons, channels and marshes that
hosts more than 300 bird types.
ECONOMY
After the Warsaw Pact was dissolved, Romania’s economy suffered heavy losses. A
moderate revival was recorded in the late 1990s, but it was not sustained. Today,
HANSA-FLEX HAS EARNED ITS
RANK AS THE MARKET LEADER
FOR HYDRAULICS IN ROMANIA
about a quarter of the country’s population lives below the poverty line. But longterm
forecasts are encouraging, particularly because of the fertility of the land.
Romania is also rich in natural resources, including oil, natural gas, coal, iron ore,
silver, gold and uranium. One third of the workforce is rooted in the agricultural
sector, the most important industrial sectors are machine building, petrochemicals,
metallurgy, chemical, textile production and food processing. Romania’s major
exports are textiles, metals, machinery and transport vehicles.
HANSA-FLEX ROMANIA
HANSA-FLEX has operated a foreign subsidiary in Romania since 1997. The organisation
now consists of seven branches. In the land of bears and wolves, Managing
Director Nicolae Tasu and his 23 employees serve the needs of about 2,000 customers
in a wide variety of industries. For example, hydraulics by HANSA-FLEX is
used in Romania in agriculture, the construction industry and shipbuilding. Over
the last 16 years, thanks to the commitment of our colleagues in the country,
HANSA-FLEX has established itself as Romania’s market leader for hydraulic connecting
elements. We will continue to build on this strong position in the future. •
FLINTENWEIB
A STRAIGHT SHOOTING LADY
Over 350,000 people in Germany possess a hunting licence. Slightly
more than ten percent of these are women. One of this number is
media designer Nadine Beneke, who has worked in the HANSA-FLEX
Marketing department for 13 years. HYDRAULIKPRESSE visited the blonde,
35-year-old Ms Beneke, and learned about an encounter in Portugal, the
very difficult hunting examination, and why she sometimes spends time in
the raised hide without a gun.
It took me almost 45 minutes to drive from Bremen to the small village not far
from Verden where Nadine Beneke lives. The bell for her apartment in a converted
farm does not work. I call her on the phone and the huntress opens the door. Her
apartment is devoid of the stereotypical trappings of a hunting lifestyle. There are
no wild boar hides on the floor, no antler candelabras on the table. It is not until
it is pointed out that I notice the solitary trophy, a roebuck, hanging on the wall.
Over coffee and biscuits, my colleague starts to tell me how she became a qualified
hunter.
HUNTING LICENCE PRELIMINARY STAGE
For Nadine Beneke, obtaining her hunting licence was a means to an end. “I went
to Portugal on holiday once, and watched falconers working with their birds. I was
entranced”, she says. She decided to obtain a falconry licence so that she would
be permitted to keep birds of prey herself. “I contacted the Hunters’ Association
and asked for details. It didn‘t sound too complicated at all, until near the end of
the conversation the person I was talking to asked: ‘Of course you have a hunting
licence, don’t you.’ But I didn’t”, recounts my interviewee, clutching her coffee cup
in both hands.
THE GREEN ABITUR
Before she could receive her falconry permit, Ms Beneke would have to pass the
hunting examination. There was no way round it. And this is no easy exam. Nadine
Beneke had to attend formal classes for hopeful hunters twice a week for nine
months before she was permitted to take the exam. The exam itself consists of a
shooting test, a written examination, and an oral-practical part. She had to demonstrate
her knowledge in subject areas such as: Wildlife biology, wildlife conservation,
hunting practice, prevention of damage caused by wild animals, agriculture
and silviculture, hunting and weapons law, weapons technology, maintenance of
hunting weapons and hunting dogs, handling dead wildlife, evaluating the fitness
of game for consumption, and conservation of hunting, animal and nature reserves.
The practical part of the exam usually consists of a walk through a hunting reserve,
during which questions must be answered verbally, hunting related situations must
be evaluated and practical tasks completed. The exam is very difficult and the failure
rate is high, about 30%. The hunting licence qualification exam is known as g
HAUPTSACHE NATUR
Das war bei Nadine Beneke nicht notwendig. Sie bestand ihre Prüfung im ersten
Anlauf.
the “Grünes Abitur” – meaning literally translated green
graduation – a reference to the school leaving examination
that decides eligibility for university admission.
The shooting test is an important part of the hunting
licence, and its requirements vary from one federal state
to another. In most cases the candidate shoots with two
different weapons – a rifle and a shotgun. For the rifle,
five shots must be fired at targets over a distance of 100
metres for each required discipline. With the shotgun, the candidate must hit ten
to 15 moving targets. Only two cartridges may be used for each target. Candidates
who fail this part of the test are permitted to try again on the same day. If they are
unsuccessful at the second attempt, they must retake the entire exam.
NATURE ABOVE ALL
Nadine Beneke did not need to take the exam again. She passed at the first attempt.
This means that, since 2009, Ms Beneke is an officially licensed huntress.
But I am interested to learn why she is committed to a pursuit that often seems
rather warlike to the uninitiated.
“It is certainly not just
the idea of killing wild animals”,
the media designer
states quite emphatically.
“When you have sighted
and assessed a target as a
suitable target, your body
is flooded with adrenalin.
Then, when you actually pull
the trigger, that is the icing
on the cake. But for me, that
is not what it is all about.” It
is rather a sense of experiencing
nature. “When I am
sitting in the raised blind,
it is like a short holiday. The
peace is just a wonderful
contrast to my work sitting
at a desk. I don’t always take
my weapon with me when
I go, I prefer to just sit and
watch the animals. For me,
it is just a relaxing evening
surrounded by Nature”, says
the huntress.
The duties of qualified hunters
are in fact manifold. They
are tasked with keeping
wildlife populations healthy
through targeted hunting,
and thus preventing major
die offs during the winter.
Hunting also helps to control
the growth of wildlife populations,
which in turn limits
damage to farmland and
woodland and maintains
species diversity. Hunters
who have leased a hunting district are also required to improve the land for all
wild animals living in the area, for example by planting hedges and feeding pastures,
keeping woodland borders defined or creating wetland areas. They maintain
hunting facilities such as raised blinds, carry out wildlife monitoring projects
and wildlife counts, and they protect the wild animals from feral dogs and cats.
These are just a few of the many functions they are required to fulfil.
A VISIT TO CHARLY AND JOSY
We have finished the interview, and my colleague takes me outside. In the garden,
there is a huge aviary, which
is home to Charly and Josy,
her two Siberian eagle owls.
After passing the hunting examination,
Nadine Beneke,
did go on to get her falconry
permit, and she now keeps
two of these magnificent
owls. Charly is the tercel (a
word from falconry meaning
the male). He is a good third
smaller than Josy and quite
a lot more trusting. “I have
had him much longer than
Josy, so he is more used to
me”, explains the falconer,
with Charly sitting on her
left arm. Training birds is
immensely time-intensive.
The media designer takes
her eagle owls out for two to
three hours every day. This
is also from the language
of falconry and means that
the falconer walks outside
the aviary with the bird
perched on her arm, so that
it becomes used to her. It is
important to build up trust.
“The eagle owls have to
learn that they have nothing
to fear from me”, says
my colleague, as she strokes
Charly’s head affectionately.
Josy is watching everything
from a few metres away, occasionally
uttering a series of
clicked warning sounds. She
is still wary, but that will no
doubt change in time. •
At the airport or on the road: customs inspections are possible at every border crossing.
VORSICHT VOR DEM ZOLL
CAUTION, CUSTOMS
machen.
Anyone who intends to import goods from abroad must be thoroughly
familiar with the applicable customs and import regulations.
Many of those affected, particularly holidaymakers, look upon customs and the
associated inspections as a nuisance. But customs protect the economy from distortion
of competition, consumers from substandard goods from abroad, and the
population from transnational criminality. In Germany, the Customs Administration
employs over 40,000 staff at more than 250 customs offices. In 2011 alone,
it earned over 123 billion euro. The primary objective of the Customs Administration
is to combat economic crime – from product piracy to classic tax evasion. It
also serves to protect consumers as well as combating terrorism and preventing
violations of species protection provisions. And it is the debt collector for the German
Federal Republic. It is empowered to collect unpaid receivables from foreign
debtors both inside the country and at customs checkpoints at the border. In 2011,
the Customs Administration added almost 1.2 billion euro to the domestic budget
this way.
DO NOT EXCEED DUTY-FREE LIMITS
There is a lot to remember, especially for people who are travelling. Because holidays
abroad are often the occasion for carefree shopping, after all, the chances of
finding great bargains are good. Whether these are items of clothing purchased
in the USA, electronics in Japan or wine in Italy: But you should always find out
what quantities of the goods in question can be imported into your home country
without paying customs duties. It is true, customs borders no longer exist within
the European Union. As a result, in general products that are intended for personal
use can be brought home without incurring any customs payments. But there are
limits above which even these items cannot be imported entirely free of charge.
Individuals travelling by air or sea from non-EU countries can bring goods up to a
value of 430 euro into the EU without payment. For visitors travelling by rail or bus,
and those driving cars, the customs-free limit is 300 euro. If the value of the goods
they are bringing in exceeds this limit, customs duty must be paid on them. If the
duty-free allowance is exceeded, the goods are subject to 19 per cent VAT as well
as the applicable customs duty rate, which varies from two to 15 per cent.
Although these two general travel allowances apply, many goods may only be
imported in limited quantities regardless of their value.
THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES APPLY
• Within the EU, individuals may bring with them either 800 cigarettes, or 400
cigarillos, or 200 cigars or one kilogram of tobacco. On the other hand, if they are
travelling from a non-EU country they are limited to either 200 cigarettes, 100
cigarillos, 50 cigars or 250 g smoking tobacco.
• Within the EU, individuals may bring with them either ten litres of spirits, or ten
litres of flavoured alcohol beverages, or 20 litres of intermediate products such as
fortified wine or vermouth, or 90 litres of wine or up to 110 litres of beer. For those
travelling from a non-EU country, one litre of spirits, two litres of sparkling or fortified
wine, four litres of non-sparkling wine or 16 litres of beer are duty-free.
• Within the EU, ten kilos of coffee are permitted. Individuals travelling from non-
EU countries may bring with them 500 grams of coffee or 200 grams of coffee
extracts, essences or concentrates.
• Individuals arriving from non-EU countries may bring technical goods with a
value up to 300 euro into the EU duty-free.
• It is also permitted to import 50 grams of perfume and 0.25 litre eau de toilette.
• Travellers both inside and outside the EU may bring up to 10,000 euro in cash with
them without having to declare it.
• Fuel may only be imported duty-free from an EU member state if the fuel is in the
vehicle’s fuel tank or in a reserve tank on board the vehicle. However, the quantity
that is carried should represent a reserve quantity – about 20 litres for a motor car,
approximately 60 litres for a lorry.
MANY ITEMS ARE RESTRICTED OR
PROHIBITED ENTIRELY
There are also various goods the import of which is
strictly limited or completely prohibited. Individuals
who wish to import pharmaceuticals must comply
with the strict provisions of the German Controlled Substances
Act (Betäubungsmittel-Gesetz, BtmG) and the
Medicinal Products Act (Arzneimittel-Gesetz, AmG). In
general: It is only permitted to import as much as is prescribed for personal use
and normal individual needs. The import of fireworks is subject to equally stringent
restrictions. In Germany, only fireworks that bear a mark of approval from the Federal
Institute for Materials Research and Testing are permitted. The import of fishery
products is also subject to strict regulations. Without the certificates stipulated by
veterinary law, the quantity imported must not exceed one kilo. Wild animals and
plants or plant parts may not be brought into the country at all. Similar restrictions
MANY GOODS MAY ONLY
BE IMPORTED IN
LIMITED QUANTITIES
also apply to most domesticated animals. It goes without saying, drugs may not be
brought into the country, nor can publications or media that are harmful to young
persons, or politically subversive literature. Weapons and ammunition may not be
imported except in a few exceptional cases, by hunters or participants in shooting
sports, for example. Prohibitions also extend to instruments of torture and “conflict
and blood diamonds”. In short: Anyone who intends to bring goods to Germany
from abroad must check the regulations very carefully beforehand. •
It’s obvious that smuggling weapons or drugs is illegal. But there are other prohibitions that
are much less self-evident. For example, it is forbidden to import chewing gum and duty-free
cigarettes into Singapore.
Waffen
PRACTICAL PRAXIS
BEI BARD WEHT DER WIND
A FRESH WIND BLOWS AT BARD
Windkraftanlagen liefern mit jeder Umdrehung der Rotorblätter
sauberen Strom.
Energieressourcen auf hoher See.
kommerziellen Hochsee-Windpark Deutschlands namens „BARD Offshore
ERRICHTUNG AUF HOHER SEE
„Pile Guidance Frame“ (PGF) entwickelt.
zwei Ebenen in senkrechter Position gehalten.
Wind turbines generate clean electricity with every turn of their rotor
blades. But if one of these turbines is even visible from a housing
estate, it often causes resentment among the residents. So it only
makes sense to erect these structures where they are out of sight and the
wind blows almost constantly. These requirements are met with offshore
wind farms. One of the world’s foremost providers in this industry and a pioneer
in the field is the BARD Group, headquartered in Emden.
Since it was founded in 2003, the BARD Group has been dedicated to the exploitation
of new energy resources on the open seas. The mission of the group
is to develop innovative solutions for combining highly advanced technologies
with sustainable climate protection. To this end, it operates a special crane ship,
named “Wind Lift 1”, which has been purpose-built for erecting and subsequently
operating the turbines. Installation of the turbines is the task of BARD
Building GmbH & Co. KG, while BARD Service GmbH is responsible for operating
them.
BARD OFFSHORE 1
Since early 2010, BARD has been building Germany’s first commercial open sea
wind farm about 100 kilometres off the coast of Borkum. It is called “BARD Offshore
1”. When it is completed in late 2013, the 80 wind turbines in the farm will
generate a nominal output of 400 megawatts, enough to supply the needs of
more than 400,000 households. Even now, nine months before its completion,
“BARD Offshore 1” is Germany’s largest and most productive offshore wind farm
by far. In March 2013, 72 foundations were built and 40 turbines, each with an
output of 50 megawatts began operations in the seas off Borkum. The BARD Group
developed and patented a system called the “tripile” foundation system especially
for this wind farm. The system is perfectly adapted to deal with the conditions that
prevail at the North Sea construction site.
CONSTRUCTION ON THE HIGH SEAS
The “Wind Lift 1”, which is called a “jack-up barge”, is at the site off the coast of Borkum
in order to raise the wind turbines into position. The vessel is a self-propelled
lifting platform with a gigantic crane. In order to be able to ram the foundations of
the wind turbines into the seabed 40 metres below the water surface and despite
the movement of the water, four jacking legs, each 72 metres long, are hydraulically
lowered to the sea floor and raise the vessel out of the water. This turns the
“Wind Lift 1” into a safe, stable working platform that can continue working at full
capacity even while five-metre waves thunder below and force seven winds rage
above. To ensure that the three piles that make up the “tripile” foundation system
are driven into the sea floor perfectly vertically, the engineers from Emden created
the 300-ton “Pile Guidance Frame” (PGF). The piles are kept vertical by an ingenious
hydraulic system that includes a total of twelve hydraulic cylinders on two
levels. In order to create this hydraulic system, the German offshore innovators approached
our colleagues in the Industrial Service department at the HANSA-FLEX
branch in Wilhelmshaven.
HYDRAULICS TO THE HIGHEST SPECIFICATIONS
After BARD placed its order in late 2011, the Industrial Service team at Wilhelmshaven
set to work immediately on the largest project it had ever received. “One
particular requirement was that the unit had to be installed in the container and
the hydraulic cylinders had to be aligned”, reports Timo Matusch, Deputy Regional
Manager for HANSA-FLEX. “Our colleagues in Industrial Service took care of that.”
Since the twelve hydraulic cylinders of the PGF had to deliver colossal forces in order
to keep the piles in position, an enormously powerful plant had to be designed
and built. The plant, with a power output of 2 x 75 kW, had to be protected g
in senkrechter Position.
In the yellow pile guidance frame (PGF), twelve hydraulic cylinders hold the support piles
perfectly vertical.
against corrosion by seawater, so its tank and accessories
were produced from stainless steel. Finally, the entire
plant was installed in a ten-foot container. “This is
where our colleagues in Engineering Projects excelled
themselves. Make no mistake about that. This was absolutely
imperative in this project, because BARD has
really created an engineering wonder. So of course
the hydraulics must be equal to that in order to ensure
that it operates as it should”, Timo Matusch praises the
achievement of his colleagues.
Another challenge was the time factor. In order to complete the order on time,
the teams in Industrial Service occasionally had to work around the clock, either
on site or at the Wilhelmshaven branch. “Thanks to excellent cooperation
between our teams and with the assistance of a small number of subcontractors,
we were ultimately able to successfully complete the largest project
undertaken to date by the Wilhelmshaven Industrial Service department”,
the Deputy Regional Manager sums up the operation. To give an idea of the
size of this order, here are a few figures: In all, over 400 hydraulic hose lines
and about 900 metres of bent stainless steel pipelines of various dimensions
were manufactured and installed on site. The unit also includes 18 pressure
accumulators, each with a volume of 32 litres. Besides the above, HANSA-FLEX
delivered threaded connectors and rubber-coated clamps as well as the valve
and safety blocks.
PROBLEM-FREE OPERATION
PRACTICAL PRAXIS
THE TWELVE HYDRAULIC
CYLINDERS OF THE “PGF” HAVE
TO DELIVER COLOSSAL FORCES
The PGF has now been in operation for a number of months and completed its
work at 17 locations. “The entire system works like clockwork. Up to now, we have
had no problems whatsoever”, reports Henry Schäfer, Quality Manager for the
BARD Group. But just in case a hydraulic hose line should fail, BARD maintains an
extensive spare parts inventory on board the “Wind Lift 1”, which was supplied
by HANSA-FLEX. In this way, the experts in offshore wind energy are perfectly
equipped to finish “BARD Offshore 1” on schedule and begin delivering clean energy
to German households. •
helmshaven begonnen.
eingebaut. „Hier haben die Kollegen Engineering-Arbeiten auf höchstem
Niveau erbracht.
alles stimmen“, lobt Timo Matusch.
900 Meter gebogene Edelstahlrohrleitungen in verschiedenen Abmessungen
an 17 Standorten erfolgreich verrichtet.
ausfällt, betreibt BARD an Bord
der „Wind Lift 1“ ein umfangreiches Ersatzteillager,
welches von HANSA-FLEX bestückt wurde. So sind
die Spezialisten für Offshore-Windkraft bestens ausgestattet,
um „BARD-Offshore 1“ nach Plan fertig zu
stellen und saubere Energie für deutsche Haushalte
zu liefern. •
WENN SCHIFFE BERGAUF FAHREN
WHEN SHIPS SAIL UPHILL
Herausforderung. Zwischen Buczyniec und Całuny musste ein Höhenunterschied
von fast 100 Metern überwunden werden. Anfangs plante Steenke den Bau von 20
Schleusenkammern, doch dieses Vorhaben war zu kostspielig. Eine andere Lösung
musste her.
Boat on the Overland Canal have been hauled uphill by steel cables for more then 150 years.
in Betrieb.
g
In the second part of our series on industrial monuments, our travels take
us to Poland. More precisely to the Elblag Canal in the Polish Warmian-
Masurian Voivodeship. With a length of 129.8 kilometres, this canal connects
the cities of Iława and Elbląg, and ultimately opens into the Vistula Lagoon
in the Baltic Sea. For more than 150 years, boats have passed through
this canal, which is a protected industrial monument. The remarkable feature
of the system is a series of five inclined planes, in which the ships are
drawn over land on tracks.
The ancient Hanseatic city of Elbląg stands about 50 kilometres southeast of Danzig.
In the early 18th century, the city was a centre for trading in large quantities of timber.
But there was a problem. The trees were felled in the area around Osteróda and
had to be transported to Elbląg. The only way to reach the Vistula Lagoon by water
involved following several rivers and sometimes took more than six months. Transport
over land was backbreaking work, and also very time-consuming. So the plan
to build a canal between the forested highlands and the Hanseatic city of Elblag
was first drafted in 1789. But it was almost 50 years later that the project gradually
began to take shape. One nine-kilometre section presented an enormous challenge
for Georg Steenke, who was commissioned to build the canal. Between Buczyniec
and Całuny he somehow had to overcome a height difference of almost 100 metres.
Originally, Steenke planned to build 20 locks, but this idea proved to be too expensive.
He had to think of another solution. Finally, he had his defining flash of genius
in 1850 during a trip to the United States, while visiting the Morris Canal in New
Jersey. Ships in locks were loaded onto wagons and then carried uphill. Steenke
refined this principle and constructed a system that made the locks unnecessary.
AN ENGINEERING MASTERPIECE
Shortly after his return from the US, work began on the first four inclined planes,
via which the boats were to be transported to the next higher plane. Then, as now,
height differences ranging from 18 to 24.5 metres were traversed on the slipways,
known as inclined planes, in Buczyniec, Katy, Olesnica and Jelenie. Because this
150 year old structure is still in operation today. Each of these inclined planes is
equipped with a fixed cableway. These are used to haul the ships to the next section
of the canal with the aid of railcars. Each fixed cableway is equipped with a
machinery house in which a cable drum is driven by an undershot waterwheel.
Not only is the system old, it also uses renewable energies. The canal was approved
for shipping on 31 August 1860. A fifth ramp was built near Caluny between 1874
and 1881. This one was equipped with an electric drive that is powered by a water
turbine.
RISE AND FALL OF A CANAL
As many as 57 ships per day made the trip along the canal, bringing goods to
the Baltic Sea. But while it served the needs of water transport with admirable
efficiency, it was ultimately overtaken by technological progress. At the end of the
19th century a railway line was built with which goods could be transported even
more quickly. The volume of goods transported on the canal fell steadily. Whereas
in 1913 over 100,000 tons passed through the canal, by 1925 this figure had
dropped to barely 35,000 tons. Just a few years later, goods traffic on the Elblag
Canal had ceased entirely.
Die geneigten Ebenen
am Oberländischen Kanal
sind heute eine beliebte
Touristenattraktion.
Today, the inclined
planes on the Overland
Canal are a popour tourist
attraction.
Jahrhunderts
gekommen.
TOURISTENATTRAKTION
TOURIST ATTRACTION
But this certainly did not spell the end, because even shortly after it opened the
canal became a popular excursion destination due to the beauty of the surrounding
countryside and its own engineering marvels. That much has not changed to this
day. Tourists can travel along the canal in pleasure boats that were carrying visitors
before the Second World War. Today, several tour operators offer canal trips from
Elbląg to Osteróda. Those who embark on such a trip quickly succumb to the feeling
that they are also travelling through time. Because with the exception of a very
few upgrades, the equipment used to transport the ships up the hills is the same
as when it was originally installed. On the inclined planes, the ships are conveyed
on the transport wagons, which are almost completely submerged. Once the boat
reits vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg Besucher transportierten. Mehrere Veranstalter
been anchored securely to the wagon, a loud gong at the upper station sounds
to signal that it is ready for transport. Slowly, the transport wagon begins to move,
climbing up the hill one metre at a time. The process is so stately that it is easy to
walk alongside the boat and take photographs. The process is not associated with
haste in any form. So travellers have plenty of time to inspect the over 150-year-old
machinery housings and watch the machine operators at their work.
A highlight of the tour is the museum just outside of Buczyniec, where many original
components are on display. Other tourist attractions in the region include the
cities of Osteróda and Iława, which are located in the middle of the breathtaking
Elblag Lake District. Whatever takes you there, the Elblag Canal is well worth the
trip. •
EIN GANZ BESONDERER STEIN
A VERY SPECIAL STONE
Weitere historische Namen lauten: Glaere,
In beinahe allen
In the Middle Ages, the Germans described it with the word “Börnsteen”,
which roughly translated means burning stone. The Greeks called it Elektron,
to the Romans it was known as Glaesum. Other names from earlier
times include: glaere, lynkurer, agstein and anbar. All of these designations
refer to one thing, the brown to yellowish substance that has been known
for millennia, and which we now call amber. As a raw material, it was being
fashioned into jewellery from as early as 10,000 years before the Common
Era, and was reputed to possess mystical healing powers. Vestiges of this
belief still persist today.
In reality, amber is not a stone at all, it is hardened tree resin, and may be as much
as 300 million years old. The extreme age of some specimens of amber is fascinating
for palaeontologists, because they are constantly finding fossils of small animals
or plant parts enclosed and perfectly preserved inside it. Some of our readers
will be reminded of the film “Jurassic Park”, in which the blood and thus also the
DNA of dinosaurs was extracted from mosquitoes encased in amber, and which
was used to reproduce many of these extinct species. Of course that only works in
the movies. But in reality, these inclusions can be studied, yielding valuable information
about the flora and fauna that existed on the planet in prehistoric times.
AMBER IN ARCHAEOLOGY
Amber is also valued highly in archaeology. It was prized in almost all major
cultures as a mark of wealth and power and, as mentioned earlier, was g
SCHON GEWUSST...? DID YOU KNOW...?
DID YOU KNOW...? SCHON GEWUSST...?
Eine der vielen außergewöhnlichen Eigenschaften des
Bernsteins: Er ist brennbar.
One of the many unusual properties of amber is that it is
combustible.
verarbeitet.
Amber was being worked for ornamental purposes as much
as 10,000 years ago.
So finden Archäologen regelmäßig Bernsteinperlen
und andere Schmuckstücke in Hortfunden
oder als Grabbeigaben. Und diese Funde sind keinesfalls
örtlich begrenzt. So wurde in einem 3.000 Jahre
alten Urnengrab bei Ingolstadt eine aus etwa 3.000
Bernsteinperlen bestehende Halskette ausgegraben.
Handelsschiff viele Bernsteinperlen gefunden
sehr wahrscheinlich vom Bernstein bzw. Brennstein
Was ihn aber ganz besonders
verloren. •
worked to form items of adornment at a very early
stage. So archaeologists regularly find amber beads
and other items of jewellery in treasure caches or
among burial objects. And these finds are not by
any means limited to a given geographical region.
For example, a necklace consisting of about 3,000
amber beads was recovered in the excavation of a
3,000-year-old urn grave close to Ingolstadt. Such
an item must have been of practically incalculable
value in its time. At digs in southern England, archaeologists
found two gold rings, each of which
was inlaid with a sliver of amber. But the remarkable
thing about the find was this: An almost identical
artefact was found in Mycenae, which was an
important commercial centre in the Bronze Age
(about 1500 years before the Common Era). And
amber jewellery dating from more than 6,000 years
ago has even been found in Egypt.
EARLY GLOBALISATION
Scientific analyses of the amber artefacts found
in Egypt have revealed that the amber originated
from the southeastern region of the Baltic Sea
coast. Then, as now, the Baltic region was a major
source of amber – particularly the Samland Peninsula
in the former East Prussia, which is now part
of Russia in the Kaliningrad Region. Archaeologists
are therefore puzzled as to how amber jewellery
might have travelled all the way to North Africa in
such early times. There can only be one explanation:
Trade in amber must have been flourishing
3,000 years ago. In a documentary entitled “Die
Bernsteinstraße” (The Amber Route) broadcast by
the ARTE television station in the summer of 2012,
archaeologist Dr Timo Ibsen followed one of the
possible trade routes from Thebes to the Baltic region.
In the programme, the archaeologist’s route
is compared with a virtual journey to the Baltic Sea
coast undertaken by an Egyptian 1,400 years ago.
The first stop on the journey is the archaeological
site at Qatna in Syria, where a well-preserved
amber lion was excavated. The route taken by Timo
Ibsen then passes through the city of Uluburun
in southern Turkey, where a large number of amber
beads were discovered in a sunken trading
ship, and on to Mycenae. Significant amber finds
have been reported here, too. The route continues
through the Brenner Pass in the Alps, whose very
name may quite possibly be derived from the old
German word for amber, Brennstein. Other stations
on this possible trade route include the ancient settlement
of Bernstorf near Freising in Bavaria, which
according to ancient legend enjoyed vast wealth,
Ingolstadt, Nebra, where the famed sky disc was
discovered, and Neustrelitz. Whether amber was really
traded between the Baltic Sea and North Africa
in this way is still open to question. But it is beyond
dispute that such trade routes did exist.
FASCINATING PROPERTIES
But why are people so enthralled by amber? One of
the reasons may be that it can be worked very easily,
and has a unique appearance. But it owes its appeal
mostly to its extraordinary properties. Amber
floats in salt water and can be charged electrically
by rubbing. Its most remarkable feature, though, is
the fact that amber burns readily, which is why it is
called burning stone. When exposed to a flame, it
gives off a resinous fragrance. So it was often used
for ritual purposes, and even today it is used as a
substitute for incense in India. Today, the largest
amber mining site in the world is near the town of
Jantarny, not far from Kaliningrad. In 2008, about
500 tons of amber were extracted, 90 percent of
which is used for manufacturing varnish. Although
in our times it is used almost exclusively for a very
mundane purpose, amber has still lost nothing of its
fascination. •
