Pigmentorientierung
beeinflusst.
Grafik 8 zeigt Vergleiche unterschiedlicher Pigmentklassen in zwei
verschiedenen Bindemittelsystemen. Durch das Abdunsten des
Lösemittels schrumpft der Nassfilm und presst praktisch die Aluminiumpigmente
in eine horizontale Lage. Diese Ausrichtung ist
umso ausgeprägter, je höher der Lösemittelgehalt des Lackes war.
Dies wiederum erklärt die Beobachtung, dass die Pigmentorientierung
und damit auch die optischen Eigenschaften von
„low-solid-Basislacken“ wesentlich besser sind als die von
„high-solid-Lacken“.
Pigment orientation
The quality criteria described – brilliance, brightness, colour
saturation, coverage, flop and DOI – depend not only on particles
and particle size distribution, but also on the orientation of the
aluminium flakes in the paint film (Fig. 7).
Best effects are achieved when the flakes lie parallel to the surface
of the film. Poor orientation leads to ”clouding” or to an uneven
”salt and pepper” effect.
The orientation of flake pigments depends mainly on the formula
and on application conditions. Fig. 8 shows comparisons of different
classes of pigments in two different binder systems.
The evaporation of the solvent causes the film to shrink and virtually
press the aluminium pigments into a horizontal position. The
higher the solvent content of the paint, the more pronounced this
effect is. This explains the observed phenomenon that pigment
orientation and thus the optical properties of ”low solid paints” are
considerably better than those of ”high solid paints”.
