Neu an der augustana?
Guter Brauch ist es, sich
vorzustellen, wenn man
neu ist. Das möchte ich
in aller Kürze gerne tun.
Allerdings hatte ich persönlich
nie das Gefühl,
hier an der augustana neu
zu sein, denn vom ersten
Tag an war ich „gefühlt“
bereits monatelang als Verwaltungsleitung an der
Hochschule tätig. Natürlich gibt es eine Menge zu
tun, wenn man einen Arbeitsplatz neu aufnimmt
– Unterlagen sichten, neu ordnen und zusammenstellen.
Die Gegebenheiten, Strukturen und
Ziele der Organisation müssen erfasst und ihre
Wechselwirkungen miteinander berücksichtigt
werden. Manchmal schätzt man die Dinge und gegebene
Abläufe zunächst falsch ein, kann jedoch
daraus Neues dazulernen und hat Gelegenheit,
seinen eigenen Erfahrungsschatz zu erweitern.
Alles zusammen macht hier an der augustana
den Bereich der Verwaltung äußerst kurzweilig
und spannend. Denn Verwaltung ist alles andere
als langweilig und wiederkehrend oder gar immer
bürokratisch. Im Gegenteil: Der besondere Zusammenhang
zwischen den drei sich gegenseitig
beeinflussenden Faktoren „Struktur“, „Strategie“
und „Kultur“ innerhalb einer gut funktionierenden
Organisation macht diese Arbeit hochinteressant.
Die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter empfinde ich
als hochmotiviert und besonders engagiert für ihre
Hochschule. Allen gemeinsam, mich eingeschlossen,
ist es wichtig, die Verwaltung der Hochschule
effizient, so weit wie möglich unbürokratisch, serviceorientiert
und aktiv zu gestalten. Neues gilt es
auf den Weg zu bringen – nach dem Abgleich „Wo
wollen wir hin? Was wollen wir erreichen?“ – und
manches muss auch über Bord geworfen werden,
wenn Ziele neu defi niert werden. Zu meiner Person:
Von Beruf bin ich Diplom-Betriebswirtin (FH)
und nun seit 10 Jahren bei der Evang.-Luth. Kirche
in Bayern tätig, zuvor war ich bei einer Bank
als Abteilungsleiterin für verschiedene Bereiche
verantwortlich. Ich bin verheiratet und habe drei
Kinder in Schule und Studium, die dafür sorgen,
dass es auch zuhause niemals langweilig wird.
Organisation – und damit Verwaltung – lernt, ist
fl exibel und auf gegenseitige Unterstützung angewiesen.
Deshalb freue ich mich über Anregungen
und auch kritisches Feedback, besonders gerne
im persönlichen Gespräch.

augustana: Dear Mr. Niyikiza,
you are pastor of the evangelical
Church in Rwanda - which
church exactly?
Obed: I am Quinet Obed Niyikiza,
pastor of the Free Methodist
Church of Rwanda.
This is one of the fi rst Protestant
churches founded in
Rwanda during the last century.
The Free Methodist Church
of Rwanda is a member of the
Protestant Council of Rwanda.
It is also one of the founders
and members of the board of
the Protestant University (Protestant
Institute of Arts and Social
Sciences, “PIASS”) where
I worked as a lecturer and aca-

demic secretary in the Faculty of Education before I came to Germany.
augustana: Currently you work at the University of Bamberg on educational
theory. You were running here at the augustana as a team, with Dr. Siegfried
Grillmeyer from the CPH in Nuremberg - where you live. How did you like it
at the augustana?
Obed: Certainly the Charity Fun Run at the augustana was very important
to me. I found it very interesting that the augustana-seminary organizes a
relaxing time on which staff and students participate as a team. What also
impressed me is that this program is open to people from outside. It seemed
to me a way to encourage students in theology not to look on themselves,
but to open up to the reality of everyday life. Of course, I was very pleased
to receive the Augustana Run Medal and I am very grateful to the organizers
who have given it to me. My thanks to Dr. Siegfried Grillmeyer who accepted
to fi nd me a room in the CPH house, where it is a great pleasure to live
staying here in Germany; but he also invited me to the Augustana run and
sponsored my participation.
augustana: Can you explain the topic of your research in a few sentences?
Obed: The particular focus of my PhD is on the institutional change to student
centered education in higher institutions in Rwanda. I work under the
supervision of Prof. Dr. Annette Scheunpfl ug. Our research refl ects on the
possibilities of implementing a method of “teaching-and-learning” which encourages
learners to participate on the learning process and to acquire the
knowledge they learn in order to have self-esteem, self-fulfi llment as well as
self-autonomy.
augustana: Which idea, thought or knowledge do you want to take from Germany
to the university to Rwanda where you will probably teach?
Obed: Rwanda crosses a diffi cult period characterized by the after-effects
of genocide. The opportunity that was given to me to continue my doctoral
studies in Germany and work with serious and honest people allows me
to have some perspectives towards my future profession as a pastor and
teacher at the university.
After my studies, I intend to introduce in Rwanda some educational system
similar to the one I found at my university in Germany, among other things,
assist students in their research and encourage them to continue despite
the diffi culties they may have.
Having worked with a team to support children – street boys and children
as head of households - in social and economic development, I am still
passionate to enable human beings to develop in every facet of their lives
